Harjo performs with her saxophone and flutes, solo and with her band, the Arrow Dynamics Band, and previously with Joy Harjo and Poetic Justice. Harjo has produced seven award-winning music albums including Winding Through the Milky Way, for which she was awarded a NAMMY for Best Female Artist of the year. SourceThis episode includes a reading of her poem, “Perhaps the World Ends Here” featured in our 2024 Get Lit Anthology.“Perhaps the World Ends Here”The world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what, we must eat to live. The gifts of earth are brought and prepared, set on the table. So it has been since creation, and it will go on.We chase chickens or dogs away from it. Babies teethe at the corners. They scrape their knees under it.It is here that children are given instructions on what it means to be human. We make men at it, we make women. At this table we gossip, recall enemies and the ghosts of lovers. Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms around our children. They laugh with us at our poor falling-down selves and as we put ourselves back together once again at the table. This table has been a house in the rain, an umbrella in the sun.Wars have begun and ended at this table. It is a place to hide in the shadow of terror. A place to celebrate the terrible victory. We have given birth on this table, and have prepared our parents for burial here.At this table we sing with joy, with sorrow. We pray of suffering and remorse. We give thanks.Perhaps the world will end at the kitchen table, while we are laughing and crying, eating of the last sweet bite.Support the showSupport the show

She's called Australia home for four decades and become one of this country's most beloved singer/songwriters, with three wins for Best Female Artist at the ARIA Awards in the '90s. Originally from Canada, Wendy Matthews cut her teeth as a session singer and backing vocalist before stepping into the spotlight with a series of increasingly high profile projects, culminating in Absent Friends' top 5 remake of "I Don't Want To Be With Nobody But You". Wendy tells us about those early experiences and how she then embarked on a solo career that yielded a string of hits from her first two albums, like "Token Angels", "Let's Kiss (Like Angels Do)" and her platinum-selling, ARIA-winning version of "The Day You Went Away". As she shares the stories behind the songs, Wendy reveals her hesitance in being a solo artist and the degree of control she was able to exert over her career. We also hear about gospel-influenced album The Witness Tree, what happened when her record label, RooArt, was sold to a major international record company, BMG, and why she eventually decided to go back to her independent roots.Bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/aussieTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @TurnAroundOnJoyInstagram: @chartbeatsau, @joyturnbeataroundEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Thrilled to welcome one of Ireland's current great Artists, Wallis Bird. Wallis has released six albums since 2007, for which she's won two Meteor Awards, Ireland's annual music prize – mostly recently for Best Female Artist – and a prestigious 2017 German ‘Music Autoren Preis' (Music Author Prize), not to mention two further nominations for the Choice Music Prize, Ireland's equivalent to Britain's Mercury Prize. In addition, she's racked up over a thousand shows during the past decade, earning a reputation worldwide for her legendarily passionate, energetic and good-humoured concerts. Wallis has also previously found a champion in American artists Amanda Palmer, and the Irish Times once noted that Bird's irrepressible trademark energy on stage could “kickstart an entire economy”. Her latest album, HANDS sees Bird turning the spotlight onto herself, raising issues that are sometimes hard to face. Bird confronts themes of trust, alcohol abuse, stagnation, self-censorship and self-improvement. Each of them, however, is delivered by a voice uncommonly blessed with joy, ingenuity, and empathy. Enjoy the epic conversation that touches on topics including energy and health on the road, the drive to perform and deliver, positive reinforcement, marriage equality and more.

Yugen Blakrok & Kanif The Jhatmaster - "Pedestal," a 2022 single on I.O.T. Records. Hailing from the Eastern Cape, rapper Yugen Blackrok shot to stardom with her 2013 debut album Return of the Astro-Goth, landing three nominations in the South African Hip-Hop Awards for Best Lyricist, Best Newcomer, and Best Female Artist. Here in the States, she was a stand-out on 2018's Black Panther: The Album, appearing on the track "Opps" alongside heavy-hitters Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples. Earlier this year, she returned with the single "Pedestal," which finds her reunited with long-time producer Kanif the Jhatmaster. In a press release, she states: Concepts. Idols. Civilizations. We build and we destroy. ‘Pedestal' is about building oneself and breaking the mould. Growing, expanding and still remaining true to the spark. The pedestal is a physical framework for the senses. Civilization after civilization, it carries the weight of great symbols and the foundation of cultural and social edifices. I'm just wondering this morning if we, as women, need to apologise now for being women. Or for calling ourselves women. Is it insulting that we are happy to be women? Adele has been in hot water this week for her acceptance speech at the Brit Awards as she collected the gong for Artist of the Year. It used to be two categories, Best Male Artist and Best Female Artist, but in a move we should've all seen coming, that was changed to the more gender neutrally appropriate “Best Artist'. So Adele said when she accepted the award, "I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist. I do!" That's what she said – to huge applause and cheers by the way. But here's the difference between the real world and the online world – the keyboard warriors lit up. What travesty was this?! No less than a transphobic slur, she must be transphobic! Why would she say such a thing? How dare she! Twitter users (who else) blew up in fury – “Who'd have thought Adele was a transphobe and would use her platform to call for the destruction of the trans community!” said one. The destruction of the trans community? Are you serious? Some said they'd lost respect for her and ‘wouldn't spend another cent on her music'. She was accused of confusing teenagers. To be clear here, all she did was say she loves being a woman. And that now, apparently qualifies as cancellation worthy. And this is where cancel culture is eating itself. It's so inane and ridiculous that you now cannot even enjoy being the gender you are, for fear it upsets those who don't believe in gender. Worse still, those who are affronted by her daring to say she likes being a woman, are now bullying her online, in the hope that what? She denies her own existence? That she apologises for being a woman? That she stops referring to herself as a woman? That God forbid she backtracks and decries enjoying being a woman? Where is all this going? What's the end game here? Why do we all have to be the same? And why do we have to bend and change ourselves constantly to fit in with whoever the latest person or group to be offended is? Surely that's a bottomless pit? There will be no individuality left at all, if we go down that track. I mean the Tweeters that are outraged that she's apparently confused teenagers by saying she loves being a woman, what about the teenagers who're seeing this bullying backlash against a woman for saying she likes being a woman? What message is that sending them? Some sprung to Adele's defence – thank goodness. One author's reported as saying, "A decade ago, if someone had said a woman would [be criticised] for the thought-crime of saying she liked being a woman, I would have laughed at such a ludicrous suggestion. Now it is happening.” She's right - it is ludicrous. So ludicrous in fact that Adele hasn't even bothered responding to it. But maybe someone should tell Shania Twain? Surely it can't be long before her song, “Man, I feel like a woman,” gets cancelled.

There will be no Best Male Artist or Best Female Artist categories at the ARIAs this November. Chief Executive Annabelle Herd talks us through what the awards are hoping to achieve.
Born in Zambia, Sampa the Great lived in the United States, Australia, and Botswana. With multiple African and Diaspora experiences, her music and style are very Pan African. Her work is Pan African in a very organic way. It does not claim to be conscious or preach about Pan Africanism, it just is. Because of this, as a listener, there is joy in listening to music that speaks to our multicultural Black identities. In this interview, she talks about existing as a Black person in different cultural spaces and her interactions across the continent and in the Diaspora. Sampa the Great also talks about her experiences with racism and self-identification while studying in the US in the early 2010s, and later after she moved to Australia. She also talks about the differences between racism in the US and racism in Australia. She delves into the differences in the social unity of Black people in the US and in Australia, where in the US there is a division between Black immigrants and multi-generation-US-born Blacks and in Australia there is an understanding of the importance of Black unity in the face of living in societies that are held up by institutional racism. As an artist, Sampa the Great released her first mixtape in 2015 while living in Australia. Several singles, EPs, and mixtapes later, she released her debut solo album, The Return, in 2019. The album peaked at No. 12 on the Australian music charts. She went on to win Best Hip Hop Release at the 2019 and 2020 ARIA Music Awards, Australia's top music award. In 2020, she also won the ARIA award for Best Female Artist and Best Independent Release. Sampa the Great has been very outspoken about racism in Australia through her music and performances. She has also been outspoken about the role of women in hip hop and the importance of representation as an African artist on an international stage. Light Years is the seventh studio album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. It was released on 22 September 2000 in Australia by Mushroom Records, and later on 25 September 2000 in the United Kingdom by Parlophone. Following the commercial failure of Impossible Princess (1997), Minogue departed with Deconstruction and took a hiatus from recording music. She signed with Parlophone in June 1999, and decided to go back to her pop roots. She worked with various writers and producers, including Steve Anderson, Johnny Douglas, Robbie Williams, Guy Chambers, and Mark Picchiotti. Light Years is a dance-pop, disco, and Europop album that made references to music from the 1970s. Lyrically, the album touches upon themes of women's empowerment, celebration, and sex in a cheeky and campy approach. It received favourable reviews from music critics, many of whom complimented Minogue's return to pop and considered the album to be one of Minogue's strongest releases. The album won the ARIA Award for Best Female Artist and Best Pop Release at the 2001 ceremony. The album peaked at the top position on the Australian Albums Chart, making it Minogue's first number-one album in her native Australia. It also reached the top 10 in Scotland and New Zealand. Five singles were released from Light Years, including the Australia number-one singles "Spinning Around" and "On a Night Like This", as well as the top 20 entries "Kids" and "Please Stay". All four peaked inside the top 10 in the UK. The final single, "Your Disco Needs You" was limitedly released in Australia and Germany. It was further promoted with the On a Night Like This Tour, which visited Europe and Australia from March to May 2001. The tour was once the biggest by a solo artist in Australia, grossing U.S. $5 million. The album was re-issued in Europe in 2018 and returned to the UK Albums Chart and the Scottish Albums Chart.

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. My guest on this episode is Branjae Jackson, commonly referred to as Branjae or the Count Tutu singer who has a lot of energy and has a lot of fun. She’s a force to be reckoned with on the stage and is growing into being one in the activism world. Earlier this year, the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd launched the biggest protest movement in global history, and Branjae took part locally and at the national stage. She’s featured in our November issue in a story about her trip to Washington D.C. to celebrate the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. It was a speech that preceded the civil rights act by two years. As you’ll hear in this conversation, she hasn’t always been politically charged to make change. She didn’t always think about using a microphone as a bullhorn to call for racial justice and criminal justice reform, but she’s embraced the opportunity and is charging forward. We discuss when and how she realized she needed to learn more and do more. The pandemic postponed live music in Tulsa, but Branjae has continued to work hard on career. She talks about how the shutdown forced her to explore new avenues like acting and dancing in the new movie “Finding Carlos” which is a family friendly adaptation of the Nutcracker. She discovered she could reach a much larger audience online and could have fun playing small shows on people’s porches.Branjae earned the 2020 Black Wall Street Music Award for Best Female Artist and has had four nominations for Tulsa Music Awards, as well as a nomination for Best Social Justice Video in the Independent Music Awards, which honor Indie music projects from around the world. In addition to fighting for racial justice, Branjae also speaks out against domestic violence, something we talk about in this conversation. In 2019, she co-directed the music video for her song “Street Light,” which tells the story of surviving domestic violence and highlights community support for victims. Billboard Magazine premiered the project, and Branjae published an op-ed on Afropunk — a national arts and culture website dedicated to promoting social awareness — about how “Street Light” came to be. We have included that song at the end of this episode. I really enjoyed having this conversation with Branjae and getting to know her better. I’ve long admired her musical talents and the way she can lure in the audience with her performance, and now I have even more respect for her as a strong voice in our community wanting to make Tulsa an even better place. OK, let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Branjae.

A lot of times we tend to want the big rewards, but are not willing to put in the hard work to get it. There are no shortcuts when it comes to building your dream. Are you willing to confront obstacles, circumstances, people, and personal challenges that lie between and the goals you have set? Are you willing to make a mistake and be a laughing stock to others around you are too blinded to see your potential? Are you willing to put the time and effort and the discipline to prepare for the big task even if you are seeing immediate results? In this episode, we discuss the criteria it takes for God to grant the desires of your heart, how our childhood gives us clues which points us to our purpose, the importance of having a village when it comes to molding your gifting, why "structure and order" is essential in building the dream, how Pride can be your biggest hurdle when it comes to progress, the difference between the world's way, the church's way, and the Kingdom way when it comes to business, the purest form of faith, and why knowledge needs to be met with planning and preparation. "The Summer Sent You” The summer sent us Mary Black. And we are better for it. And we’re so lucky to have her. The legendary Dublin-born singer doesn’t do a lot of podcasts so we’re very appreciative that she chose to do ours. And, coincidentally enough, she appears one week after her son Danny of the Coronas made his third appearance on the show. Mary Black has the kind of musical CV that is filled with so many highlights, to list them all would require a separate podcast. Over the course of her career, she’s put out 12 solo albums, including classics like Without the Fanfare, and By The Time It Gets Dark. She also found time to record two great albums with the traditional Irish folk band De Dannan and toured the world with them as well. Over the course of her winning career, Mary Black sold out the Royal Albert Hall, collaborated with Joan Baez, Steve Martin Liam Clancy, and Westlife, won IRMA’s for Entertainer of the Year and Best Female Artist and in the process of all this work, became one of the most treasured voices in music, both in her native Ireland and internationally. And speaking of that voice, What HiFi magazine once declared that Black’s voice was so pure, they used it as an audiophile benchmark for comparing the sound quality of different high fidelity systems. In this conversation, Mary talks to Alex about heading to Tasmania, the work of Bob Dylan and Shane MacGowan, being protective of her voice and what adding orchestration taught her about the songs we’ve known her for all these years...

Few people have created art across as many disciplines as Joy Harjo. Even fewer have achieved her level of success. The Tulsa native and member of the Muscogee Creek Nation is best known for her poetry, which she writes as "a voice of the indigenous people." Since the 1970s, she has published 12 books of poetry, which have won her myriad awards: the prestigious Ruth Lilly Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Josephine Miles Poetry Award, the William Carlos Williams Award, the American Indian Distinguished Achievement in the Arts Award, the American Library Association’s Notable Book of the Year, to name just a few. Her memoir, “Crazy Brave,” which details her troubling childhood and her journey to becoming a poet, won the PEN USA Literary Award for Creative Non-Fiction. She reflects on that memoir — and the personal history it forced her to confront — during our interview.Joy Harjo first studied visual art — and absolutely loved it. But there was a moment in college where her focus shifted, transforming her from an artist into a poet. This episode of Tulsa Talks is brought to you by the Tulsa Regional Chamber. Most recently, Joy was the Chair of Excellence in the Department of English at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Prior to that, she was a professor of English in the American Indian Studies department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She has also taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Arizona State University, and the universities of Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.Harjo also is an accomplished vocalist and instrumental musician, playing a menagerie that includes the guitar, ukulele, bass, flute and saxophone. Her music often incorporates the spoken word. She has produced 5 award-winning albums and is a recipient of the Native American Music Award for Best Female Artist of the Year. She performs extensively nationally and internationally with her band, Arrow Dynamics.Jerry Wofford from the Woody Guthrie Center dropped by to talk about the musical line-up for the center’s Sixth Anniversary Celebration April 26-28.Be sure to check out these great musicians performing at Guthrie Green, for free, April 26-28. More information can be found at woodyguthriecenter.org. Joy Harjo’s poetry has diverse themes as complex as the artist herself: her ancestry, indigenous values, feminism, politics, individual struggle, what it means to be human. CeCe PenistonCeCe Peniston (/siːˈsiː ˈpɛnistən/; born Cecilia Veronica Peniston; September 6, 1969)[1] is an American recording artist and former beauty queen.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] In the early 1990s, she was one of the most successful dance club artists in the history of the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play, scoring five number one hits in the chart within three years.[9][10] Her signature song "Finally" (#5 in the Hot 100[10] and #2 in UK Top 75[11]) became one of the biggest dance singles, selling three million copies worldwide.[12]Peniston has performed at private engagements for Aretha Franklin's private birthday party in Detroit, Michigan, Pope John Paul II in Rome at the Vatican (as a member of the gospel band Sisters of Glory) and the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, during both of his inauguration ceremonies in Washington, D.C.[13] She was the first foreign female entertainer to perform in post-apartheid South Africa.[13][14]On February 4, 2011, Peniston signed a record deal with West Swagg Music Group/Bungalo Records, with full distribution through Universal Music Group Distribution, and announced release of a new solo album 15 years after her last studio set (I'm Movin' On from 1996 on A&M Records).[15]By the end of the year, however, only three digital singles had been issued including a new song called "Stoopid!",[16] and two cover versions of her prior hits, "Keep On Walkin'" and "Finally".[17][18]In December 2016, Billboard magazine listed her among the 100 Top Dance Club Artists of All Time (as the 52nd) 1969–90: Early life[edit]Peniston was born in Dayton, Ohio, in United States, but spent the majority of her formative years in Phoenix, where she was raised since she was nine. As a daughter of a former military father, Ronald Peniston (born 1934, married Barbara Anne in 1960), she started singing at church[20] and doing plays and musicals such as H.M.S. Pinafore in the 6th grade. She participated in local karaoke contests and singing talent shows, while taking piano lessons.[4][8]She attended Trevor G. Browne High School, class of 1987, in Phoenix,[21] and landed a part in a local theater group's production of Bubblin' Brown Sugar[3][4] (playing the young Sweet Georgia Brown[22]). After earning her diploma, she continued to study liberal arts at the Phoenix College, where she got involved in athletics, and entered beauty pageants. She was crowned Miss Black Arizona in 1989[3][4][5][6][7][8][12] and Miss Galaxy in 1990.[3][7]Peniston began writing pop lyrics already at school. The words of her international hit "Finally" were purportedly penned during a chemistry class, while thinking about dating in college. Her music career began in January 1991, when Felipe "DJ Wax Dawg" Delgado, her friend and a record producer based also in Phoenix, asked Peniston to record back-up vocals for Tonya Davis, a black female rapper known as Overweight Pooch after her childhood nickname.[3][4][24]Davis, headed in a direction of a "new" Monie Love, was searching for a singer to add vocals to the title track of her album Female Preacher, which was to be released on A&M Records that summer. At a talent show she met a woman named Malaika LeRae Sallard, but when it came time to get Sallard into the studio, the rapper found she'd lost her future label-mate's number. When Delgado, who'd preferred Peniston instead, brought his favorite in to do background parts, the response from everyone was immediate, but did not move the Pooch to invite Peniston back for more vocals – unless she was successful in locating Sallard.[24]Later, as it became clear that Peniston was leaping from the Overweight Pooch's album to the top of the charts, rumor had it the Pooch was stewing over Peniston's using Female Preacher as her springboard. Tonya Davis, pregnant at the time of recording her album, swore she harbored no jealousy towards Peniston. "There's no jealousy, because she has a voice. I gave her the chance, but I didn't give her a voice,"[24] the rapper insisted for Phoenix New Times in July 1992, and Peniston, interviewed by the same newspaper in the meantime, reacted by her own words. "I feel like anything's possible and I know one thing. If I wasn't at this spot, I still would be achieving to get to this spot."[24] Ironically enough, Sallard eventually threw in a few back-up vocals for Peniston on a song with a significant title, "You Win, I Win, We Lose", while Peniston, who in return played an agent to get a record deal also for Malaika (whose album Sugar Time scored in 1993 two Top 5 hits on the US Dance chart, including the No. 1 single "Gotta Know (Your Name)") mentioned the Pooch's name on her own debut album in addition, leaving Davis a note saying "thanks for letting me be a part of Female Preacher".[25]Besides the Peniston's vocal performance on three tracks in total, of which "I Like It" was released as a single with a moderate success (at #16 in US Dance[26] and #58 in UK Top 75[27] the following January), she was eventually given also a credit for co-writing two of those, "Kickin' Da Blues" and the title's, "Female Preacher". But the Overweight Pooch's album flopped on the market, and A&M was the first major label for Delgado himself, who was facing contractual disputes with the record company. After Manny Lehman (a DJ, then A&M Art Director and one of the executive producers of Female Preacher) also noticed the powerful voice of a still back-up vocalist, he offered Delgado a second chance, and commissioned him to produce a track for Peniston herself as a solo artist.[4] Not looking to lose his major deal connections, Delgado called on a hometown friend and music producer too, Rodney K. Jackson (they two met through mutual friends in Arizona), who was brought then to A&M family to help co-produce the Peniston's single, which was soon to be recognized as “Finally”.[28]Despite an initial label's resistance to sign Peniston to more than a one-off single deal, the “Finally” session resulted in recording her own debut album after the final approval of A&M's Vice President, Mark Mazzetti.[29]1991–92: Finally[edit]Peniston with Felipe Delgado at Chaton Studios in Phoenix, Arizona, putting final touches to her debut albumI was sitting in a Chicago pizza parlor in October and I heard over the radio 'Finally by CeCe Peniston'. I just started looking around going 'That's me! That's me!"[5]—Peniston recalled for EW magazine in 1992. (Almost 20 years later, when asked by Mega 104.3, she denied saying it, during her interview broadcast live on April 5, 2011.)[30]Peniston was 21 years old when her debut single "Finally" was released. The song burst on to the US club scene in the fall of 1991, where it became an instant dance anthem peaking, in October,[10] at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play for two weeks, while achieving a respectful starting position (at No. 29)[11] overseas. After her first song climbed the international charts, Peniston was headed into the studio to record a full-length album. However, she "had two months to pull the whole album together" and "didn't realize the impact the record was having until it reached the top five". She also described how difficult it was to begin her career at such an extreme pace, but [4] the result was a solidly produced ten track collection titled Finally, issued in January of the following year. Both the single and album entered the US Hot 100, as well as the UK Top 75 chart (at No. 5[10] and No. 2 for single,[11] respectively at No. 70[10] and at No. 10 for album release[11]), and ultimately earned Peniston a gold or silver certification in both countries. By the end of 1992 her debut (in Europe re-released in 1997 with a bonus remix "Finally '97") sold over 540,000 in United States.[31]"We Got a Love Thang", the second single (co-written by Chantay Savage), with a video clip in heavy rotation on TV music channels, went to No. 1 in the US Dance chart in February (No. 20 in the Hot 100),[10] and in England (where "Finally" skipped to No. 2 eventually[11]) "We Got a Love Thang" peaked at No. 6.[11] Might the only controversial question regarding the title remain who had provided background vocals on the record? While on her album Finally Darnnel Rush was credited, on its single release, the name of Kym Sims (who was a co-writer of "Keep On Walkin'") appeared as one of back-up vocalists actually.[32]With another hit record on the charts, Peniston began a year of touring clubs and small theaters in the USA in support of her album. Her travels started with a series of shows in the Philippines, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy, and after her return to the USA, Peniston continued with such R&B acts as Joe Public, the Cover Girls, R. Kelly and Levert.[4] While on tour, "Keep On Walkin'", a hip hop swinging composition, joined the list of Peniston's three consecutively running hits, bringing Peniston in June her third No. 1 in the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart (No. 15 in the Hot 100),[9] and another Top 10 hit in UK.[11] Later in August, that was also her highest outing in the US R&B chart, scoring at No. 3.On October 17, Billboard magazine announced that Peniston was the leading nominee in the Billboard Music Awards, being nominated in four categories: three times in the dance category with "Finally" (Best New Artist, Best Female Artist and Best Director), and one in the R&B/Rap category (Best Female Artist) for her urban hit "Keep On Walkin'".[33] Ultimately the song won two awards, and three of her singles released in 1992 were listed also within the Top 100 songs of the Billboard Year-End chart (at No. 20 with "Finally", at No. 61 with "Keep On Walkin'", and at No. 97 with "We Got a Love Thang"[34]). In the UK, Peniston was listed as the 20th of Top Selling Singles Artists in 1992.Additional songs taken from album Finally achieved the Top 40 status at least in the hip hop/R&B field. The grieving lyrics of her ballad "Inside That I Cried", co-written by Peniston's then-husband, Malik Byrd (who appeared also in its video), and produced in conjunction with Anita Baker's cohort, Steve Lindsey, peaked at No. 10 in the US R&B (No. 94 in the Hot 100[10] and No. 42 in UK Top 75[11]). The fifth single, a midtempo, "Crazy Love", climbed to No. 31 (No. 97 in the Hot 100[10] and No. 44 in UK[11]).By the end of the year, Peniston received several awards for her achievements in the music industry for 1992. Among them, one Billboard Music Award (as Best New Artist – Dance, the second went to the video director Claude Borenzweig), three ASCAP Awards (for Song of The Year, Most Performed Song of The Year, and Pop Songwriter of The Year), another three awards (as Best New Dance Artist, Best Dance Solo Artist, and for Best 12" Dance Record) at the Annual Winter Music Conference, and the BMI Urban Award of Achievement.[13] The album itself was nominated on a Soul Train Music Award '93 in the Best R&B/Soul Album – Female category.[35]1993–95: Thought 'Ya KnewWithin a year, Peniston was back in the studios to record her sophomore release, and the particular challenge for the vocalist was to avoid getting pigeonholed into the dance genre. For that reason, several ballads were arranged to appear on the final set (in the front with "Forever In My Heart", produced by Brian McKnight), of which, however, none was chosen for a single release. This time around, Peniston co-authored three of thirteen tracks ("Whatever It Is", "Give What I'm Givin" and "Maybe It's The Way",[4] a ballad about her father[8]), and along with Manny Lehman and Damon Jones, who later became Peniston's manager, she was also credited as an executive producer of her scheduled album release, Thought 'Ya Knew. Apart from others, also fellow Ohio-born singer Norma Jean Wright joined the session.[36]After a certain level of hesitation over the first single, "I'm in the Mood" (originally produced by Soulshock and Karlin) was picked to be the final leader—though as support for "Searchin'", which would be separately delivered on vinyl only to DJs. "I'm in the Mood" did well by itself, and with a video accompanied by a hip-hop remix from M-Doc & Jere M.C. (better known as In Da Soul) the title was on singles reproduced by David Morales for the dance floor. The song spawned Peniston's fourth No. 1[10] (dethroning from the top of the US Dance chart Aretha Franklin's "A Deeper Love") and peaked at No. 16 in UK[11] (#32 in the Hot 100[10]).On January 25, 1994, the album Thought 'Ya Knew, which was to represent Peniston's musical zenith at that time, arrived on all available formats, including digital compact cassettes. However, as the record promptly entered the music charts, it was soon to be evident Thought 'Ya Knew was not enjoying the high-profile success of her previous set Finally. After its progress had stalled in the Billboard 200 at No. 96,[10] Thought 'Ya Knewclimbed to No. 31 in the UK,[11] but the album charted for only two weeks in the UK.Not certain about the second single either, "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" was accepted to become the British follow-up. But the track, remixed by Eddie Gordon's West End production team, had no supporting music video, and after peaking at No. 36 in April in the United Kingdom,[11] an alternative title ("I'm Not Over You") was chosen for the US market as the second cut from the Thought 'Ya Knew album."I'm Not Over You" (written by Steve Hurley, Jamie Principle, and M-Doc) might have missed the highest position of the US Dance chart, but only by about one point (at No. 2),[10] and the single was later classified in the overall Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart as the ninth most successful track of 1994 (leaving "I'm in the Mood" far behind, at #44). However, although the song had sealed the Top 10 of the US R&B chart, it did not succeed in the Hot 100 that much, failing to crack Top 40 (No. 41).[37] Considering that expectations of A&M Records company must have been bigger than a club play sale of Peniston's singles, "I'm Not Over You" was released in UK only on B-side of the "Hit by Love" release."Hit by Love" was to be the third song taken from the album. As with her previous releases, the song (with additional remixes by David Morales) became Peniston's next US Dance hit in a line of her No. 1s, but while on the top of the chart "Hit by Love" stayed for another week, the single stuck at No. 33 in the UK Top 75,[11] as well as on the bottom positions of the American Hot 100 chart (at No. 90).[10]Along with "Hit by Love" in the charts, A&M issued a rare compilation, Remix Collection, in Japan with nine alternate versions of her songs previously available only on vinyl, which tracked Peniston's music career since the "Keep On Walkin'" release. A similar remix collection, however, consisting of only two singles ("Finally" and "We Got a Love Thang"), was earlier issued in Japan as an EP under the title Finally / We Got a Love Thang: Remix Collection featuring overall eight remixed versions. At the end of the year Peniston was named the No. 1 Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Artist,[37] summarizing all her songs released in 1994 ("I'm Not Over You" #9, "Hit by Love" #24, and I'm in the Mood" #44). While A&M was listed as the sixth best dance label in the Billboard Year-End chart, Peniston was also rated as the 5th Top R&B Singles Female Artist (behind Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton, Aaliyah and Mariah Carey).[38]In addition, a remix of "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" was popularized on the original motion picture soundtrack of the Prêt-à-Porter (Ready To Wear) film, and released in the U.S. after a one-year delay, scoring No. 4 in the US Dance charts in March 1995. "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" became Peniston's first song not to enter the Hot 100 chart (No. 101),[10] possibly as the result of appearing as a B-side on her previous release, and sharing its sales with the single "Hit by Love". At age 16, Samantha LaPorta is the youngest guest I've had on the podcast. Our conversation took place on the same day that her single “It's a Girl Thing” was released. She's a Disney Radio artist, something she always wanted to be, and she's has acquired a number of awards and accolades, including social site Sweety High's Best Holiday Songs of 2016, NCMA's 2015 New Teen Artist and Best Teen Video, and the 2015 Nashville Universe Awards nominations for Rising Star, Best Song, and Best Female Artist. Clearly Samantha has caught the attention of people who matter, which is a testament to her drive and self motivation. All of this in spite of the fact that she's at a very early point in the trajectory of her fast moving career. Samantha has been described musically as a mix of Ariana Grande and Tori Kelly. She sees herself as a pop singer with R&B in her soul. Even though she regularly performs for large crowds, Samantha admits that she was pretty shy in the beginning. She shared with me that she used to be so shy, that she couldn't look at people or have either of her parents in the same room while singing. Clearly she's broken out of her shell, but says she's still working to become the performer she really wants to be. Nowadays Samantha performs, records and works on her skills as a songwriter through practice, coaching and collaborating. She loves playing guitar too. She loves the language and what it gives her as a songwriter. Samantha's mother Terry is very active in the management of Samantha's career. I got the strong impression that there's good balance between Samantha's music, school and social life, thanks to her parents. Terry told me she wants Samantha to reflect on this time in her life, with memories of an actual childhood. Part of this balance includes Samantha's active involvement in giving back, which she does by performing for children with medical needs, the elderly, and anti-bullying events. She's mega talented, and I know it's a tough business; but I think she'll go far. She's got a good head on her shoulders and great parents guiding her along the way. Lookout indie pop. Holly Throsby is a songwriter, musician and author. As an accomplished singer and songwriter, Holly has been performing since 2004, and has released five albums. In 2010, she joined forces with her friends Sarah Blasko and Sally Seltmann to form the indie pop group Seeker Lover Keeper, which released one album the following year. In 2016, she became an author: her first novel was published in September by Allen & Unwin. It's named Goodwood, and it's about what happens to a small town in New South Wales when two prominent members of the community go missing within a week of each other. The story is narrated by a 17 year-old named Jean Brown, and everything we see is filtered through the young narrator as she grapples with the dramatic turn of events. It's a combination of a mystery narrative and a portrait of a town experiencing a collective trauma. Goodwood offers a wonderfully lush and well-realised depiction of several aspects of contemporary Australian life, and it announces Holly as a major talent in fiction writing. I first met Holly in April 2013, when she invited me into her home in Sydney to talk about drug use for my book Talking Smack. In late September 2016, Holly's book was launched in Brisbane by previous Penmanship guest Kathleen Noonan at Avid Reader bookstore. The morning after, we met at an inner-city hotel room for a conversation which touches on her extensive research into the creative process as she began the book's first draft while pregnant with her daughter; why she likes the distance and anonymity that comes with writing fiction; how elements of the story and its characters draw on her upbringing in Sydney's inner west; how she snuck some of her favourite Australian expressions into the book's dialogue; what inspired her to record an album for children, and what led her to write an op-ed for The Sydney Morning Herald about same-sex marriage. Holly Throsby is a Sydney-based songwriter and musician. She has released four solo albums and a children’s album called See! She is known for summoning melodies that sound beautifully crumpled, worn and decades-old, and matching them with hushed, cutting lyrics that read like a Carver short story. Holly has been nominated for four ARIA Awards: two for Best Female Artist, one for Best Children’s Album, and one as part of Seeker Lover Keeper, her band with Sally Seltmann and Sarah Blasko. Goodwood is Holly's debut novel. To say that that Lira is South Africa's most successful and high-profile young female solo artist just a handful of albums into her career is no puffery. From her first tentative steps with the 2003 album, “All My Love” to her 2006 record ‘Feel Good' and 2008's ‘Soul In Mind', the girl from Daveyton township on Joburg's East Rand (who wrote her first song when she was just 16) has pursued a career that has put her on top of her very considerable game. ‘Feel Good' album's title track became an instant – and enduring radio hit – earning a place as one of the most-played songs ever on South African radio. Lira's follow-up, 2008's ‘Soul In Mind', was as potent, earning Lira Album of the Year and Best Female Artist awards at the 2009 South African Music Awards. She was named Best Female Artist in 2010 for the live recording ‘Lira - Live in Concert: A Celebration'. In fact, the success of the latter DVD was proved when it became the fastest selling locally released live DVD in South Africa's history – reaching double platinum status less than a year after its release. Early 2011 sees the release of Lira's fourth studio record – ‘Return To Love'. It's an album that again raises the bar for an artist who never ceases to push forward. And it's likely to be Lira's breakthrough record into a global market that is set to be as smitten by this genuinely warm, hugely gifted artist as her homegrown fans are.
