Hello, and welcome back to my podcast and website refort.co I'm R. E. Fort. I'm so excited to announce the release of my newest CD Stop Wait and Think. This is my 15th CD, and my 7th publicly released CD. I started writing this one in 2023 and had a few tracks come to me in early 2024. This CD is a collection of Blues, Ballads, Rhythmic Soul and a few Fusion tracks. I also wrote two lullabies for two of my three grandchildren. Now, about the CD artwork, I love photographing the full moon and have taken lots of images, but this one was so cool I knew I had to use it. I also wanted to see what Chat GPT would come up with, so I asked it to create an image based on just the title. What came back were a lot of images, some crazy. But there was one of a man standing on the edge looking out at what were three signposts, and I knew would look so cool with the full moon instead. So, after a fair amount of editing and cleanup, my full moon as a layer I had my artwork. I think it pretty cool. Let's get to the tracks.Without Music Life Has No Soul

He's a true pioneer of his own sound. Progression Sessions Vol 1 in particular holds the most special place in my heart as it closely resembles a set I heard play live in 1998 in The Courtyard at Cream in Liverpool. I'm your host, Melissa Oliveri.Today we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Songs from The Skylark Bell – the official soundtrack to The Skylark Bell podcast, released under my stage name, Cannelle. This episode will feature track-by-track commentary on the album, including notes on the inspiration and method behind the songs. There will be an extended version of the episodes available exclusively to Patreon subscribers that will include unreleased material and additional insight. So, grab a blanket and a warm drink, and may I suggest some headphones... and let's get started.----------------------------------------------Let's begin with the intro music to The Skylark Bell, a short instrumental piece called Nightbridge. This song plays at the beginning of each episode of The Skylark Bell. After taking only 10 minutes to compose a song for my friend Amy's podcast, a song you can hear in the extended version of this episode if you are a Patreon Subscriber, I thought composing music for my own upcoming podcast would be a breeze. Boy was I wrong. Nothing I was coming up with felt right, and after several days of trial and error I was getting frustrated. I took a break from being hyper-focused on trying to compose a new song and sat at the piano to play some of my original songs and a few covers, when suddenly it hit me. One of my songs, Night, had a very intricate, interesting, mildly spooky bridge which just might work as a stand-alone piece of music. Sure enough, it was absolutely perfect for The Skylark Bell, and Nightbridge was born. If you listen carefully to the beginning, you can hear the wind blow, then a door open, then footsteps as if someone is coming in from outside. Hold that thought until we get to the end of the album... PLAY NIGHTBRIDGE – INTRONext up is Jack's Room. This song can be heard in Season 1 Fantome Friday #1, also titled Jack's Room. I composed this song over 20 years ago when I was living in Montreal – it was originally composed on guitar. If you are a Patreon Subscriber you can hear a portion of the original version now. The original version was written after a conversation with my dad about an unexplained encounter I had with a long departed relative about 10 years prior. Fast forward 30 years and I converted the song to the piano and recorded it for a podcast episode telling the story. I get a little emotional with this one because it has so much history. I actually cried after recording the strings in the bridge PLAY JACK'S ROOM.Okay, now we get into the first of what I call the “One-ders”, o-n-e-d-e-r-s. I call them that because they are short little pieces of music, typically about a minute or two, that I love dearly. This one is called The Early Bird, and can be heard in Season 1 Chapter 3, also called The Early Bird. I wanted some music to be playing in the diner when Magpie and Lucas walk in, and since the diner has a “great retro feel” it only seemed appropriate for the music to also have a vintage vibe. Of course, to keep in line with the general feeling of the story, I wanted to music to be somewhat dark and mysterious. What I ended up with was some noir, 1930's private eye movie type music, and I wouldn't have it any other way. PLAY THE EARLY BIRD.Next up is one of my favourite songs on the album – The Velvets. This song first played in Season 1 Fantome Friday #4, The Bootleggers, which tells the story of my encounter with a long-departed mobster at my friend Amy's old house in Minneapolis. Hot off the heels of The Early Bird, I was definitely in a retro, jazzy mode. I started with a baseline PLAY VELVETS BASELINE, then added some trumpet PLAY VELVETS with TRUMPET, the added some rather haphazard piano, PLAY VELVETS with PIANO, and topped it off with some sultry vocals... You can hear an instrumental version of this song in the podcast Volsteadland, which covers the real-life antics of Kid Cann. PLAY THE VELVETSNow we go to our next one-der, Visions. This piece of music is recurring throughout all seasons of The Skylark Bell and generally indicates Magpie is having or is about to have a psychic vision. It first appears in Season 1 Chapter 4 – An Unexpected Guest. This song was composed in a rather unusual, but often times very effective, way. I essentially plugged my keyboard into my laptop and hit record, then spontaneously built the song track by track through improvisation, muting things that didn't work and adding filler where necessary. The entire song was composed and recorded in one evening. My favourite part is how it fades a spooky low growl at the end. PLAY VISIONS.Up next is my favourite track on the album, and one of my favourite compositions to date – The Blue Dress. Before I started composing any songs for the podcast, I had come up with an instrumental tune inspired by the song Lady by Regina Spektor, which had me exploring more jazz type chords. My tune had a soft, cigar lounge kind of vibe, and went in a few different directions before circling back to the soft jazzy part again. When I wrote the story of The Woman I the Window for Season 1 Fantome Friday #2, I immediately knew which song in the making was right for the episode. I jotted down some lyrics and made small adjustments to the song and voila, The Blue Dress was complete. One of my favourite parts of the song is the background vocals – which I made up spur of the moment as I was recording. At first I was inclined to sing Lalalalalala... but generally I prefer to use actual words in my songs, and that's when I converted those simple Lalalas to “colilililiding cololololours”, which had a similar effect but much more meaning, as the two women are both wearing blue dresses, and both have blue eyes, their colours colliding through time PLAY COLLIDING COLOURS PART OF THE BLUE DRESS  - Another part of the song I really like is the bridge, which gets quite orchestral – I love when the strings fade in PLAY THE BRIDGE TO THE BLUE DRESS. Lastly, I chose to use this electric piano sound because I'd hear Tori Amos use it effectively in so many of her songs, something I hadn't been able to do until now, but in this case, it seemed to fit perfectly with the vibe. PLAY THE BLUE DRESSNow we come to yet another little one-der, La Fête, French for The Party. This short piece of music first appears in Season 1 Chapter 6, An Accidental Discovery, in which Magpie has a vision that the abandoned house at Meadow Lane is all lit up and filled with light, people, and music. For this piece of music, I researched upbeat 1920s songs. I wanted it to sound like the music was coming from a Victrola, so I downloaded a sound effect and included it at the beginning of the song PLAY LA FETE. Up next is Song for a Loved One. This song was inspired by the sudden passing of a dear family member. Though the inspiration behind the song was a very specific person, the general feeling of it could apply to anyone experiencing loss and grief. Song for a Loved One first aired on the podcast in Season 1, Fantôme Friday #9 – Grandma's Goodbye. PLAY SONG FOR A LOVED ONE.We're just about at the halfway mark, and here is Foreign Emotion, which can be heard in Season 1, Fantome Friday #3 – The Open House. For this song I wanted something upbeat that would circle around the room like the ghost in the story. I took inspiration from the song Raspberry Swirl by Tori Amos. My favourite part of the song is the bridge, which mellows out and has a sound reminiscent of The Blue Dress. PLAY FOREIGN EMOTION.The  next song on the track list is Les Soeurs, which translates literally to The Sisters, which in this context refers to nuns. The song was recorded for Season 1, Fantome Friday #10 – The Convent. This instrumental song at its origin was composed as intro music to another original song of mine called The You That You Were, completely unrelated to The Skylark Bell. As I was writing and recording the story of The Convent and what I experienced there, this song kept playing in my mind, and I felt like it was perfect for the mood, it's delicate, feminine, and foreboding... PLAY LES SOEURS.Up next is the most rapidly written song on the album – The Wedding Dress, which was paired with the most rapidly written story of the podcast, also called The Wedding Dress, which was Fantome Friday #12 in Season 1. Both the story and song were spontaneously written and recorded in less than 48 hours and were inspired by my wedding anniversary, which happened to be that same week. Patreon Subscribers can download a remixed and remastered version of the track that was reworked by Pink Flamingo Music Studios. PLAY THE WEDDING DRESS.Now we've come to The Lady in the Room, the feature song for Season 1, Fantome Friday #6 – The House on Edgar Street. If you've listened to the episode, you'll know about the 2 female ghosts I encountered in my childhood home on Edgar Street, one lovely and kind, the other not so much. As a side note, I firmly believe that instruments have music inside of them. Every time I've gotten a new, or new-to-me, instrument, it has provided me with new compositions. It was no different when I first bought a second-hand piano a few years ago. I sat down and spontaneously wrote a very simple, very short piece of music that I instinctively named The Lady in the Room. In my mind, the lady in question was this new piano that was taking up a tremendous amount of space in my house, but later on when pondering the two ghosts in my childhood home, I felt the song title, and the song itself, fit perfectly. PLAY THE LADY IN THE ROOM.Ah, it's time for another of my favourite songs on the album – A Strange New Year, which crowned the final episode of Season 1 of The Skylark Bell. The song was inspired by Magpie and Lucas, and the short bonus episode I wrote for them where they are celebrating the new year in a Scottish Pub, but despite the joyful atmosphere, something feels... off. The song was also inspired, in part, by the strange circumstances we found ourselves in during the pandemic holiday seasons of 2020 and 2021. As I worked through the lyrics of the song, I came to realise that even though the past two years had been highly unusual, each previous year had its own unique set of circumstances. Truly, behind me was a string of strange old years. The song came together and was recorded just in time to be included on the soundtrack. Listening to the recording is a very visual experience for me, I can practically see an entire video: From Magpie and Lucas' faces lit up by a sparkler at the beginning, to the tartan-clad crowd dancing in circles during the orchestral larger-than-life bridge. PLAY A STRANGE NEW YEAR.The last song on the official version of the record released to streaming platforms is a take on The Skylark Bell theme song, Nightbridge, that is used for the outro of each regular episode. This version of the song is more stripped down, and features haunting vocals that aren't in the intro version. Also, fun tidbit – remember at the beginning of this album overview I told you to remember the sound effects at the beginning of the song? At the start of each episode you hear wind, a door, then footsteps, as if someone is coming in from outside to sit and read the story. Then, at the end of each episode, you hear the reverse; footsteps, a door, and wind... as if the person who was reading the story is getting up and leaving. PLAY NIGHTBRIDGE  OUTRO.Now, if you were lucky enough to be a Patreon subscriber last year, you received a physical CD of Songs from The Skylark Bell in addition to the digital download. This CD featured 2 bonus songs not available on the official release that can be found on streaming platforms. Here's some top secret info, you can also get a digital version of the album with the 2 bonus songs by purchasing it through Bandcamp. The first of those 2 songs is Kaleidoscope, which plays in Season 1 Fantome Friday #8, The Harlequin. This song was inspired by the loss of a dear friend nearly 25 years ago, this loss is explored in the story featured in that episode. I was inspired to add subtle Harpsichord to the song by my friend Sam on Instagram, who had composed a song on harpsichord right around the time I was recording. It's quite subtle, see if you can spot it. PLAY KALEIDOSCOPE.The second bonus song is an acoustic version of Nightbridge, which was recorded during one of my Instagram Live music shows. This acoustic version aired on the podcast in Season 1 Fantome Friday #7, The Bridge. Mitchell is not only the sound engineer for my podcasts. But he and his wife Kelly are also fans of my Firefly Drinking Songs and Hobbit Drinking Songs shows at Dragon Con. And of course, he's a fan of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast which is where they found the song that they filked. I will let them start by telling you more about the song “Lads in the Shire”. 3:43 - STORY OF LADS IN THE SHIRE To answer that question about whether Andrew and I had played that song much before our Hobbit Drinking Songs show. The answer is no. It's funny getting song lyrics from people. What makes me choose one song or another? It really varies. First off, I don't do nearly as many parodies as I used to. I enjoy parodies. However, one of my big goals these days is to write song lyrics and melodies. It's rare that I follow up with songs sent to me that are parodies. Especially if I don't know the original song. Sometimes, I will write my own melody. Mitchell and I have gotten to know one another over the years. So I thought it would at least be worth trying that. Some songs are really tough. They just don't click. I have some lyrics from Rie Sheridan Rose that I still haven't set to music. But of course, I also have a whole bunch that I did. Maybe it's the hobbit-y nature about this song, But I loved the lyrics. They were different from my standard hobbit lyrics. Especially the ones that I write. It felt like a good change to try. So I picked up the autoharp and started strumming. I said some songs are really tough to write melodies for. This one was not. The autoharp and melody came together with minimal effort. I also decided to record it. Initially, I thought I would just have Mitchell mix it and release it on Patreon as a one off freebie. But after getting additional instrumentation added and hearing the mix, I decided to consider it for This CD. Now I should point out, I had about 20 tracks I was considering for the album. Why did this one make the cut instead of being delayed until the next album? Length. My goal was to keep the album at under 44 minutes. That's 22 minutes per side. After organizing all of the songs, this 2 ½ minute song fit perfectly on the A side of the album. Yeah. I know. It's kind of silly. That's not to say it wouldn't have made the cut. I still love it and as Mitchell pointed out, it is the latest addition to my Hobbit Drinking Song show I do. The delightfully simple instruments of bass and mandolin were provided by Daniel Briggs. And of course, Mitchell Petersen mixed and mastered the song. You can download “Lads in the Shire” as an MP3 when you join my Gunn Runners on Patreon. 13:55 - Marc Gunn “Lads in the Shire” from Selcouth Thanks for listening to Pub Stories. For April's featured tracks playlist, I'm so excited to announce the release of my 13th CD named Told Ya. This CD is a great collection of blues, power ballads and smooth jazz tracks. The title came from my better half my wife Cheryl. While I was working on the title track Told Ya, she just started singing Told Ya. As soon as she said it or sang it, I knew the name of the song and the CD. Remember to hear the full tracks, check out my YouTube channel, Spotify channel or my website. Casie Ravert joins me on this episode to share truths that God has etched on her heart through some difficult storms in her life's journey. She talks about how when you first set out into adulthood, you have dreams of what the coming years will hold. We all have a "Plan A". We hope our lives will go according to that plan, but it rarely happens. Casie and her husband, Adam, have walked through some bitter waters as the pages of their story include miscarriage and infertility. Casie shares that it was in her lowest moment that she cried out to God. She asked Him why He wasn't answering, and He reminded her that He was. The answer just wasn't the one she was praying for.  Are we still willing to trust God when His answer is no? Do we find our identity in Him and Him alone, or do we require something else to give us security and joy? Is there hope for a heart that is shattered? Casie answers these questions as she shares how God has guided her heart and given her an eternal perspective.  Through this journey, God led Casie to start New Mercies Music. Their first CD is out- He Is Still God. This CD includes the song that inspired this podcast episode, But If Not. At the end of the episode, you will hear the song. I pray that it will encourage your heart as it has so greatly encouraged mine!   Resources: New Mercies Music New Mercies Music- He Is Still God CD This CD is now streaming! For more TrueFire Live sessions, check out https://truefire.com/liveAbout Matt:Though he holds a British passport and is an inductee of the British Blues Hall of Fame, Matt Schofield has been making his mark globally as one of the top players in the new class of six string wunderkinds. The Los Angeles Daily News wrote, In Schofield, the UK has produced the best Blues guitarist from any country in decades head and shoulders above the herd, while Guitar & Bass Magazine rated him in the top ten British blues guitarists of all time ranking him with icons Eric Clapton and Peter Green.Born in the industrial city of Manchester and raised amongst the rolling hills and locked in time Cotswolds, Schofield began playing guitar at the age of 12.My dad relocated to America, but before he left he gave me a BB King video. I watched it before school every day; it was three or four tracks from a concert. Later, when I was in California with my father, he showed me BB King with Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan on video. It was like; Ive got to do this. Theres something about the way the three of them were jamming. B.B. really was majestic. As an 11-or 12-year-old watching him, I was mesmerized but didnt think there was any way I could ever do that. It was too special. But when I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan playing with him, I thought maybe I could. Stevie made it seem accessible to people. I taught myself, working my way through my Dads great blues record collection. I did my first gig age 13, and Ive been doing it ever since. At age 18 he left the countryside and moved to London. There, as a sideman, he was able to hone his skills as backing a great variety of experienced and well known artists of the British Blues scene, visiting American artists, as well start touring internationally. The introspective, well read (lover of science, history and philosophy) and passionate Schofield said, this enabled me to stay close to my roots while learning my trade and exploring a variety of musical frontiers.By age 25 I was starting to explore my own band projects. Although my formative guitar influences are the largely the old school blues players, I never wanted my own music to be constrained by a rigid formula, or even genre. I just want to play Matt Schofield music. Classic Jazz, funk, soul and rock and all the music I love have all found their way into it. The process of writing and singing has become increasingly important to me, and I feel its those other aspects of creativity that helped define my own voice on the guitar. Its always been important to find a context for the guitar to be part of, so that its not just guitar solos for their own sake.I remain a music lover first and foremost. The recognition Ive received from both fans and peers is humbling and inspiring, and those pinch me moments where I found myself trading licks with heroes like Robben Ford and Buddy Guy are still the biggest thrill. Now after five studio albums and a solid 10 years of touring with my own band, I have definite broader concepts I want to explore. Remaining open to where the music might take me while maintaining the excitement that improvising and collaborating with talented musicians allow, is key to me. My inspiration and goals came from many places: My influences old and new, including musicians I have wanted to collaborate with for years. Things I still feel I hadn't fully realized on previous studio records, and a need to keep pushing myself. It all meets at the place where Im heading now. Im always aiming to go as far as possible to capturing the same connection with the listener that I aim to make at a live show or on record. Thats the goal. Capturing that special moment."About Josh:Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut. Before he was 1, his family relocated to Florida, eventually settling in Pembroke Pines, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. At age 3, he received his first guitar and at 6, he started taking guitar lessons.Josh was exposed to the blues at an early age. He listened to a variety of artists, such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert King and T-Bone Walker. He also started going to concerts, including the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.By 12, Josh was playing at established professional blues jams in South Florida, such as Musicians Exchange Café in Fort Lauderdale and Club M in Hollywood, FL.When Josh was 13, the Rhino Cats, house band at Club M, asked him to be the lead guitarist. Musicians Exchange owner Don Cohen was so taken aback by the talent of this young musician that he offered to help manage and develop Josh’s career. The Café was renowned for bringing in the best national touring blues bands, and Josh was quick to learn how to approach these blues greats, many of whom would invite Josh to sit in with them, thinking it may be a “novelty” to have a 14-year-old kid playing the blues. The novelty quickly wore off and was replaced by musicians stopping, watching and listening as this “kid” wailed out blues licks better than many of the touring guitarists on the circuit. Josh began sitting in with such greats as Jimmy Thackery, Tinsley Ellis, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Johnny “Clyde” Copeland, Double Trouble, Joanna Connor and Kim Simmonds, among others. Jimmy Thackery said of the 14-year-old, “Josh is three heartbreaks away from being a true blues guitar genius.” At 14, Josh released his first CD, Born Under a Blue Sign , and at 15, he released his second CD, Woodsheddin. While performing all over South Florida, Josh Smith and the Rhino Cats quickly became one of the most in-demand blues bands in the area. In 1994, while Josh was only 15, they received the Florida Jammy Award for best blues band and were selected as XS Readers Choice Winners in 1995 for best blues band. In 1996, then a senior in high school, Josh was put on the cover of the national magazine High School Senior , which hailed him as an “Up and Coming Guitar Legend.” That same year, Washburn Guitars Int’l recognized Josh’s talent and offered him an endorsement. They flew Josh to Chicago and guitar luthier Grover Jackson built him a custom guitar.Although Josh was an honor student, after graduation from high school in June 1997, Josh followed his heart and began pursuing what he was best at. His first national tour ensued with his newly formed power trio, Josh Smith and the Frost. Josh was now the band leader and vocalist, so he not only had to continue developing his guitar chops, but had to concentrate on his vocal prowess. In September 1997, Josh enlisted world-renowned producer Jim Gaines, whose credits include Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Luther Allison, Steve Miller and Jimmy Thackery, to produce his third CD, Too Damn Cold.By 1998, Josh had completed four national tours with his band. In January 1998, Billboard Magazine took note of the rising young talent in a Continental Drift article. In February 1998, Josh was asked to support B.B. King on a number of theatre dates. In March 1998, the TV show Chicago Hope purchased the rights to the tune “32 degrees” from Too Damn Cold . An international CD release, The Mentos Freshmaker Tour , included the title cut, “Too Damn Cold,” in the spring of 1998.Josh toured nationally all of 1999 and in October of that year, he entered the recording studio again with Jim Gaines and produced Woman , his fourth CD. This CD was released and well received in the spring of 2000. Josh continued to tour the East Coast from New York to Florida through 2001 with his band. In June 2002, he married and he and his wife decided to move to Los Angeles. Josh was ready for something new and wanted to be around a variety of musicians. He also began being a sideman.Within a year of moving to L.A., he was retained by Virgin recording artist Ricky Fante. He played nationally and internationally with Ricky for the next two years. In May 2006, Josh recorded his fifth CD, Deep Roots . A more traditional blues CD, his music was once again well received by Blueswax and Blues Revue magazine. Josh continued to play with a variety of artists, such as actress Taryn Manning, Universal hip-hop artist Benny Cassette and Tara Ellis, to name a few. In January 2007, Josh was hired by 2006 American Idol winner Taylor Hicks to be his lead guitarist. They completed two national tours from February-September 2007 with monthly dates and charity events until June 2008 when Taylor started Grease! on Broadway. In July 2008, Josh was hired by Raphael Saadiq. Since that time, Josh has played such high profile gigs with Raphael as backing Mick Jagger at the Grammy Awards in 2011 and the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2011. Josh continues to tour nationally and internationally with Raphael.Josh released his 6th studio CD, “Inception,” in 2009. This is an all-instrumental CD with a variety of genres that was once again well received by the public and critics alike. In 2010, Josh was signed to Crosscut Records, a label based out of Germany. Crosscut re-released Josh’s CD, “Deep Roots,” as “I’m Gonna Be Ready.” In October 2012, Josh’s CD, “Don’t Give Up On Me,” was released in Germany.Josh continues to live in the Los Angeles area with his wife and two children.About Jeff:Jeff McErlain is one of the rare musicians who can teach as well as he plays. This is borne out by Jeff being one of the most in demand guitar instructors as well as performing and recording with Robben Ford.Jeffs unique curriculum and method of teaching is perfect for the player who has been working at the guitar for a while but wants to go to the next level. Jeff has a straight forward and easy rapport with his students, he breaks things down so they can be easily understood, applied, and most importantly, made fun.Music is a language and learning it can be approached in much

Episode Title: “Chaotic Suggestions” Intro: In this episode, Tracy interviews Dr. Liz Slonena PsyD of “Dr. Liz Listens” YouTube channel. Dr. Liz  describes the work she does helping people calm mental and emotional chaos through hypnotherapy, and how she helps people attain success in their lives using the power of positive suggestion.   Introduction to the power of suggestion by Tracy Kenela Negative Suggestions: “Bad Boy” or “You ought to be ashamed of yourself” Positive Suggestions: “You’re very creative” or “I like the way you’re doing that” The way you view yourself or the conclusions you make about yourself in early childhood can affect the decisions you make as well as your behaviors. The goal of hypnotherapy is to use the power of positive suggestion to reprogram any negative conclusions you’ve made about yourself in the past so that you can improve any problem behaviors you have in the present.   Introduction to Dr. Liz Slonena, PsyD, of “Dr. Liz Listens” Your Zen Within | Relax with Dr. Liz - YouTube “There are no accidents!” Pain and suffering can be transforming The ways we can do Hypnotherapy to Calm the Chaos of their Minds: Overwhelmed, overstressed people who want to stress less and live more Mindful Hypnotherapy helps, and you can do it anytime and anywhere   Process:   Do a thorough, holistic assessment to get a firm diagnosis Clarifying “You’re not crazy” you are just experiencing anxiety Present them with evidenced-based therapy choices for treatment, such as CBT, ACT and EMDR Integrate Hypnotherapy to any of the above treatment choices Hypnotherapy helps you relax and bypass the hyper-critical frontal-lobe, which makes it easier to transform and change   “Hypnotherapy plus an evidence-based therapy often outperforms the evidenced-based therapy alone.”   It could involve a regression, which is going back in time to the original source of pain It also could involve a body response to the trauma (abreactions and / or going into a shock state) Positive Dissociation is a wonderful opportunity to practice mindful noticing, without judgment, what is going on in the body, following what is going on and watch it move through the body Traumatic reactions are the ways in which mind and body try to protect you! It takes time to work through “stuck responses” in hypnotherapy   More thoughts on using Hypnotherapy to move you toward successful healing   Tracy: When pain shows up in areas of the body such as the throat, Hypnotherapy presents people with an opportunity to speak their truth or actually have a conversation with someone such as a parent, ex-spouse or an abuser. Once the energy is released people feel so much better! Liz: Hypnotherapy allows you to use “chair work” while you are in an altered state of consciousness so that you can develop creative ways to toward a successful resolution to a problem. Hypnotherapy and chair work can also help you make a tough decision.   Tracy: Hypnotherapy helps people slow down and getting more clarity on what they are struggling with. When you take the time to think slowly and with a purpose and guidance, you often get more clarity and resolution.   Liz: We all have inner wisdom, and have the answers inside, we just need to slow it down, listen, and let the answers come out. Hypnotherapy helps us use our creativity and imagination (like a child would) to develop solutions for success in their lives.   Trauma and Hypnotherapy   Trauma from childhood or adulthood cause the mind and body to hold pain Over time, the trauma wounds can be triggered through a variety of situations Traumatic events often involve negative / unhelpful suggestions Healing old traumatic wounds involves a regression to an earlier traumatic time, and Unwanted behaviors such as overeating can be traced back to traumatic events / emotions Hypnotherapy can help you revisit these events and emotions and resolve them comfortably   The Perfectionist Mindset   The perfectionist mindset: “I need to fix it” or “I need to do it perfectly” “Perfectionism is the pursuit of Death” (It’s impossible to attain, so you’ll die trying) Understand and “lean into” the perfectionism (What does perfectionism look and feel like?) What sort of purpose is perfectionism serving? (mainly, to keep us safe from criticism) You can choose not to pick up the sword of perfectionism….you can try a Kevlar vest Flexibility is the solution to perfectionism You can try asking your perfectionism to take a step back if it’s not serving you well   Final Thoughts on Chaos during COVID-19   It’s okay to not feel okay right now Give yourself some permission to take a break Liz demonstrates a simple mindfulness practice that can “anchor” you, and help you settle into stillness and let go of any chaos.   Resources from Dr. Liz: YouTube:    Your Zen Within | Relax with Dr. Liz Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.lizlistens/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrLizlistens Facebook: https://tinyurl.com/DrLizFacebook website: www.drlizlistens.com email: dr.lizlistens@gmail.com   Listen to Calming the Chaos! Episode Title: “Double Chaos, Double Calm” #chaos #coaching #anxiety #depression #relationship #stress #trauma #coachingthroughchaospodcast Intro: In this episode, Tracy interviews Dr. Colleen Mullen, PsyD, LMFT of “Coaching Through Chaos” (Podcast and Counseling Practice). Colleen describes the work she does and the different projects she is involved in. Tracy reviews some of the chaos that has happened thus far in 2020. Together, Tracy and Colleen brainstorm some ways that people can calm their minds, cope with their emotions, and behave in ways that help improve their mental health. Lots of ideas here, so this is a longer podcast than usual! I. Introduction to Colleen Mullen, PhD of “Coaching Through Chaos” Podcast / Counseling Practice II. Changes in systems cause chaos! Here are some changes we, as a people, have experienced in 2020: • The Presidential Impeachment • The US and North Korea • COVID-19 and Ebola • Worldwide deaths • Fires in Australia • Fires in California, Oregon and Washington • Police and Black Lives matter (Protests, Minneapolis, Kenosha, Atlanta) • An asteroid headed to planet Earth • Murder hornets and deadly mosquitos • Sports cancelled • Stock Market Fluctuations • School closures • Unemployment • The upcoming Presidential Election Colleen Suggests: 1. Identifying Obstacles: What are the biggest obstacles that are preventing you from effectively managing chaos? 2. Present-Focus: This is temporary, so keep your mind on what is happening now, getting through day to day 3. Problem-Solving: Coming up with ideas to cope that focus on eliminating barriers and keeping a present-focus 4. Adaptability (or how well you adapt or adjust to the changes that happen in systems) will be the most relevant skill that will help you survive, thrive and move through chaotic times Tracy Chimes in with a story about how difficult it is to be flexible 1. Expectations: Chaos can happen when things don’t go the way you expect them to happen 2. Pause: Taking a step back and making flexibility an intention can help 3. Analyze and Assess the situation 4. Creativity: Be flexible and creative as you figure out what to do to calm the chaos Colleen and Tracy agree that seeing alternative answers and solutions is very important when calming / coping with chaos. III. Calming the body down • Dealing with shock (fight, flight, freeze) • Systemic Trauma, Individual Trauma, Pre-existing Trauma and Current Trauma • Coping with the fear that “We will get stuck with any new ideas developed (like telework, home schooling and mask-wearing). IV. Developing Psychological Flexibility: How do you do this? (Brainstorming Session) 1. Tracy: Gathering support and resources to help people feel comfortable and safe through changes 2. Colleen: Talking to someone like a friend about what you’re struggling with and distraction and taking breaks. Focusing on things that are NOT changing and are stable, normal and not chaotic (“normal.”) 3. Tracy: Focusing on stability, routine, grounding and focusing on what is present. Boundaries. 4. Colleen: Not getting stuck in the fears and / or uncertainty. Knowing when the negative information gets to be too much and taking a break. Practicing gratitude and positivity. 5. Both: Move beyond your expectation that things “should” be a certain way. The reality is that life ebbs and flows, and that the natural progression is for hard times AND easier times. V. Colleen’s “Past-Present-Future” model of managing chaos • All these things happened in the past • You want certain things for the future • How much energy do you spend on past script, and is this the script for your future? • Past: Women: The self-concept when we were 12 is likely the same as when we are 45 • Challenging / re-writing old, negative scripts • “You’re at a choice point: do you want to hold these scripts or re-write them?” • SKILL: “Re-writing” the traditional narrative to something more truthful and helpful • Future: What is the worst thing that can happen to you? What are you giving up if tomorrow you feel differently or give up this fear? (“The Miracle Question”) • Challenging Beliefs: Is the worst thing really so bad? The existential angst that happens when presented with something scary is sometimes death! VI. Chaos and Existentialism: is death the worst thing? Or is it humiliation / shame? • Worries and negative reinforcers • Is this your mind just being creative? The past is the best predictor of the future. “You’ve gotten through some hard times and you can do it again.” (Tracy) • How can we live the best in our major life domains? (Physical, Social, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual, Vocational and Relational). VII. Chaos Lightening Round: What do you do when Chaos hits? • What does Colleen do? i. Moving body (walks) and breathing fresh air as a ritual to work out energy ii. 30 minutes of sitting on the patio, reading, meditating, getting sunlight (vit. D) iii. Processing what is in your mind while taking a break iv. Notice your surroundings, describe them and be curious about what is going on in your body v. Sound machine apps with white noise • What does Tracy do? i. Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness ii. Taking care of the shock (getting out of your mind and into your body) such as using the five senses (sense of smell) (to combat “reptilian brain”) iii. Release the energy while keeping yourself safe iv. Positive self-talk and asking for help “Talk to yourself like you would talk to your best friend.” v. Episode Title: “Chaotic Eating” #eating disorders #anxiety #depression #body shame #foodandbodyimage Intro: In this episode, Tracy describes how some people use food or eating to cope with mental and / or emotional chaos. We will discuss examples of how mental and / or emotional chaos can happen and why food may be used or misused to cope. We’ll then take a visit into Tracy’s kitchen and examine some food-related triggers that could cause mental and / or emotional chaos. Finally, Tracy presents a solution to help those who are struggling with a “chaotic” relationship with food. The good news: There is hope for you to find a balanced sense of enjoyment when it comes to food and eating!   How can mental / emotional chaos happen around with food and eating? It’s easiest to break it down into four parts: Situations that cause discomfort, unease or distress Thoughts that occur because of situations and / or feelings Feelings that occur because of situations and / or thoughts Behaviors or actions taken to get relief or comfort from emotional distress   Situations that can cause chaotic eating: A person is stressed out about passing an important test (Think, Feel, Do) “I MUST pass the test!” Anxiety    Overeat A person is overly focused on his or her body weight, shape or size (Think, Feel, Do) “I NEED to weigh….” (Fear,  Restrict Eating) A person is insulted, or gets into a conflict with someone (Think, Feel, Do) “I’ll show you!” (Anger,  Take it out on yourself, binge, purge or restrict food) A person loses something important, or doesn’t get what they want (Think, Feel, Do) “My life is hopeless.” (Sadness, escape life by binging, purging or restricting food)    A person receives negative feedback, or regrets doing or saying something (Think, Feel, Do) “I’m not worthy.” (Shame, escape the self by binging, purging or restricting food)   A chain reaction to chaotic eating – In Tracy’s Kitchen! You are actually physically hungry Seeing a certain food causes an emotional reaction You are unaware that you are feeling a painful emotion Body feelings are physically uncomfortable An effort is made to try and alleviate the physical and emotional discomfort by using food IV: The “RADICAL” approach to managing your relationship with food and eating   Reflect on the unique struggles you are having with food, eating and body image. Acknowledge any emotions that may emerge, and notice how they feel in your body. Describe the emotional experience you have in your mind (thoughts) and body (feelings). Intuitively sense your level of distress, and use adaptive skills to cope with painful feelings. Communicate to yourself what you need, and then communicate your needs to others. Allow yourself to accept and receive help and assistance from yourself and others. Let go of your emotional suffering.   References Beck, A.T. (1976). Cognitive therapy and the emotional disorders. the midst of trials and traumas of life when we wonder to ourselves where is God?  Why did He let this happen?   For Jerry Sittser one of those events occurred in 1991 when he and his wife and their four children and Jerry's mother were hit head on by a vehicle traveling at 85 miles per hour.  The collision was fatal for Jerry's wife and for his mom and for one of his four children.  As Jerry reflects back on that event today he sees it as something that was ultimately faith affirming.   Jerry Sittser:  Through a long and often difficult journey I really did discover the Christian faith is true.  Grace really is available to get us through these hard stretches of life.  The ultimate message of Christianity is not self help it is God's help.   Bob:  This is FamilyLife Today for Monday July 6th.  Our host is the President of FamilyLife Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.  We'll hear today how a tragic car accident can be a grace disguised.   Welcome to FamilyLife Today.  Thanks for joining us.  You and I were having a conversation not long ago with Dr. Al Moeller, the President of Southern Seminary and we asked him about questions he gets thrown by the secular media.  We said the tough questions are the ones they ask you.  What are the ones that put you on the spot?  Without even thinking he said we always come back to the issue of the problem of evil and suffering.  How can there be a good God when there is suffering in the world?   Dennis:  We don't always know what God is up to.  He is God and we are not.  We have a guest with us today on FamilyLife Today that I think is going to minister to a lot of our listeners.  Actually I was introduced to this guest by my wife Barbara, who joins us on FamilyLife Today as well.  Welcome Sweetie. Barbara Rainey:  Thanks.  I'm glad to be here. Dennis:  Jerry Sittser has written this book A Grace Disguised which is a story out of his own life and it occurred a number of years ago.  Jerry lives in Spokane Washington up in the eastern section of that great state.  He is a professor of theology at Whitworth University and has a Masters of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary and has his doctorate in history from the University of Chicago.  This leaves me with only one question Jerry, White Sox or Cubs? (laughter)Bob:  Or were you there long enough to even care? Dennis:  Oh he had to be if he had his PHD.   Jerry Sittser:  Dodgers! (laughter) Dennis:  Well, I do welcome you to the broadcast and I am grateful for you writing this book, A Grace Disguised.  I want Barbara to share with our listeners to help put in context out of which she gave me Jerry's book.  Bob:  Was this something somebody gave you as a gift?   Barbara:  It was a book that someone had recommended to me a number of years ago.  I bought it and started reading it and it was in my library.  But I didn't finish the book until last summer after our granddaughter Molly was born and only lived seven days and then died. As we began to try to make sense of what God had done and what He was up to I pulled that book off the shelf.  This time I had a real heart for it.  I needed it.  I read it all the way through and I was constantly underlining and reading portions of it to Dennis and saying “listen to what this says.”   I bought several copies and gave one to a couple of my daughters.  I gave one to Molly's mother, Rebecca, and a couple of our other daughters, too.  I said you need to have this in your library and if you don't read it all the way through right now you will read it eventually. Dennis:  It is really a love story of sorts that started when you met your wife Linda.  How did you meet her, Jerry? Jerry Sittser:  I was a student at Hope College and she was a student at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.  After I experienced a conversion between my sophomore and junior year we became very good friends.  Really best friends.  One day I was standing in a group of people and somebody got my attention from maybe 100 yards away and I turned and said something to them I'm sure.  I was a little cocky back then.   (laughter) Linda was in that circle and I turned back and our eyes met and that was it right there.  I just fell in love on the spot.    Dennis:  You were smitten. Jerry Sittser:  Oh, my goodness was I smitten. Bob:  But you'd known her for months before this?Jerry Sittser:  We were very good friends, yes. Bob:  So what in that moment you don't know? Jerry Sittser:  I don't know but our eyes met and it was just different.  So I asked her out a few days later and we were married eight months later.   Dennis:  No, no, no.  I want to know how you asked her to marry you because it has to be a great story. Jerry Sittser:  Well, we went up to some property that my family owned off the Grand River up in the hills.  We made a day of it and did some hiking and I had hidden a family heirloom a little silver container with the engagement ring inside it.  That also was the family stone.  I asked her to marry me.   Dennis:  You were married for 20 years.   Jerry Sittser:  Twenty years—just shy of 20 years and we had four children.   Dennis:  She was a homeschooler and she enjoyed teaching your kids.  Taking them on field trips, right? Jerry Sittser:  She was a multitalented woman.  She was very bright.  She was a professional musician and singer.  She was the choir director and the director of the professional children's choir in Spokane and a paid soloist at our home church and also a homeschooler.  Dennis:  You were on a field trip where you went to Idaho and it was not a normal field trip that you would think of when you think of homeschoolers.   Jerry Sittser:  She had just completed a unit on Native American cultures to my two oldest who were being homeschooled at the time.  We went on a field trip to a Native American powwow.  We had dinner with the tribal leaders and had a wonderful time and wonderful conversation.   Ironically one of the topics that came up was the curse of alcoholism in the tribe and the violence that often resulted from it.  They spoke with great pain over that.  These were really wonderful people.  Some fine Christian people.    After the dinner with them we went to the powwow and enjoyed it.  My two daughters who were then eight and four actually went out and danced with the tribe for a while.  I continued my conversation with Linda and several of the tribal leaders until about 8:30 and then we decided to go home. Dennis:  Now this was 1991? Jerry Sittser:  1991 September 27.  Dennis:   And you were there with your wife and four children plus your own mom. Jerry Sittser:   My mom came for the weekend.  She and my wife were going to go dress shopping for a new dress for a solo performance she was going to be doing of the Messiah in December.  Typical for my mom she brought 12 quarts of frozen blueberries packed in ice.  It was so typical for what she would do.  She was a wonderful woman, a great grandma, and a great mom.  She was very close to our family.   Dennis:  You had gone to Idaho for this field trip and you decided to head back home to Spokane at that point? Jerry Sittser:  We did.  It was dark out obviously and on a lonely stretch of highway only about 10 minutes from where the powwow was held I noticed a car coming on at a really rapid rate of speed.  It slowed down just a little bit at a curve and so I was alert to this.   Without any warning he just drove right into me.  He missed the curve and plowed head on at 85 miles per hour.  In fact it was so head on that his car cart wheeled over ours.  So it didn't roll it cart wheeled down the highway.   It was awful.  In the wake of that accident as soon as I could I collected myself.  I was not injured seriously just bruised and that sort of thing.  I looked around and knew that it was really bad.  My mother who was sitting way in the back was seriously injured.  My four year old I could tell was dead.  She had a broken neck.  I tried to get a pulse and did mouth to mouth but it was hopeless.  I could tell my wife, Linda, was catastrophically injured, too.   My other kids were dazed, crying, and screaming.  It was chaotic.  All the windows were broken out of the car.  My door could open and I got the kids out who were mobile.  Katherine was eight and John was six and David was two.  I found out later that John had a broken femur and some other injuries but the other two kids were just bruised but okay.  I went back to try to tend to Linda.  I got a pulse but knew she wasn't going to live because her injuries were just too severe.  I did mouth to mouth on Diana Jane but she was gone.   I got to my mother only briefly but then something beautiful happened.  You find these flowers in the midst of ashes almost right away.  People began to stop.  The scene was chaotic.  The driver survived but his wife who was nine months pregnant died and the unborn baby died as well.  There were five casualties in the accident.   Some guy got out of the car and went over to my mother and reached out to her through the broken window and held her hand and stroked her arm until she died.  That is a beautiful act of grace to me.  It was very courageous of him in the midst of that chaos and that violence to break through that with mercy and love.  I wish I knew who that man was because I'd like to thank him. Bob:  What a surreal moment that had to be for you.  Almost like you've stepped out of time and space and your body…I don't know how to describe it other than just surreal.Jerry Sittser:  Yes, it was surreal.  I have such vivid memories to this day.   Nothing has faded at all.  First it was a nightmare to have those kinds of memories.  It's not so bad anymore because it's been integrated into the landscape of my life.  It doesn't haunt me like it used to.   We waited a long time before emergency vehicles came and they took over.  I got to a phone as soon as I could to call my sister to say something unspeakable had happened.  After about an hour the survivors, namely my three children Katherine, John and David and I were all put in the same emergency vehicle and were transported another hour up to Coeur d'Alene for emergency care.   That one hour was probably the most significant hour in my life.  It really was the turning point for me.  It was like a wormhole from one reality to another.  Honestly it's the most accurate way I can describe it.  Time ceased to have meaning.  It could have been ten years.  That period of time is frozen in my memory and it was probably the most rational moment I've ever had in my life.  It was quiet.  John was sedated.  The other kids were whimpering but it was quiet.  The emergency personnel didn't say anything and I had one hour to just be.  I thought about the accident and the scene.  I knew what had happened and I thought of what would be as a result.   I considered the task set before me.  I had a burden that was placed on my shoulders and in a sense a divine mandate that said you draw a line in the sand right now and decide what you want to be and what you want to come from this experience.  And I did.  I said, I want the bleeding to stop right here.  This is it.  I don't want to do things that are going to set in motion more and more pain and more and more bleeding that could go on for generations.   I made the basic decision right then and there that I was going to somehow by the grace of God respond and live this story out in a way that was going to be redemptive.  Redemption was really the key term that just kept coming back to me.  Redemption.  This is not the final word.   Dennis:  I want out listeners to hear what's wrapped up in your statement because you make this statement in your book.  You said loss does not have to be the defining moment in our lives instead the defining moment can be our response to that loss.  It's not what happens to us that matters so much as what happens in us.  You really believe that don't you? Jerry Sittser:  I do believe it by the grace of God.  I didn't write a self help book here.  I don't believe that.  The ultimate message of Christianity is not self help it is God's help.  Through a long and often difficult journey I really did discover that the Christian faith is true.   Grace really is available to get us through these hard stretches of life.  My response of choosing to trust the grace of God was far more significant than the event itself.  You know my kids would say the same thing today.  They would say that the accident is actually not that significant.  It is what's come out of it that is significant.  Bob:  What seems remarkable to me as you describe this hour of rational clarity is the absence of grief.  I think of someone living through what you have just lived through and I would think this person would be a grieving basket case.  It's not that you didn't experience grief.   Jerry Sittser:  No, I did. Bob:  Do you think this was kind of a shock response or was this the grace of God giving you this moment of clarity to prepare you for what was ahead?  Jerry Sittser:  I suppose you could say there was some shock involved in it but Bob, there was something more than that honestly.  I look back on it this day with a sense of wonder.  It wasn't simply that I had not absorbed the significance.   I knew what had happened to me.   It wasn't even as if I was holding it off.  I think God gave me that gift.  I think He gave me one hour to decide what I was going to believe and where I was going to head and I walked out of that emergency vehicle in Coeur d'Alene into a different world.  I collapsed.  It was hard going for a long time.   Bob:  Can I ask the two of you did you experience anything similar to that, Barbara, in going through what you went through with the death of Molly? Barbara:  I think we did but it wasn't anywhere near as dramatic as what Jerry was describing.  We watched our kids and as we watched them respond to the news that Molly was not going to live they had a choice to make in those first moments.  I think those early moments of facing tragedy and loss in a crisis like that are the defining moments.   They decided they were going to believe God.  They were going to believe that He was good and that He was sufficient and that He knew what He was doing.  That really set the course for them from there on out.  So I think in the moment of crisis I think God gives us that opportunity to choose.  Do we believe Him or not?   Jerry Sittser:    I like what Barbara said about defining a course because that's different from solving all the problems.  When you suffer a loss whether it be divorce or terminal illness or loss of a job it can be other things that are a little less dramatic and tragic.  I think we do have the power to set a course and that makes a huge difference over a long period of time.  It doesn't solve all the problems but it gets us going in a particular direction.  I think I did that by the grace of God.   Bob:  You know people or have met people who just dissolved in their moment of pain and didn't have that rational clarity that you described.   Jerry Sittser:  I think what happens is we give some kind of tragedy more power than it deserves.  It does become the defining moment instead of the response being the defining moment.  It's the thing itself and then pretty soon it's affecting other relationships.    It's affecting life habits that we form and 20 or 30 years later that divorce or loss or whatever continues to dominate our lives.  That's what I call the second death and it's actually worse than the initial death.  Far worse than the loss of Linda and my mom and Diana Jane would have been say the loss my children would have experienced in my bitterness.  In fact I have an interesting story to tell you.   About six months or a year after the accident I got an anonymous telephone call from a young woman who said, “Mr. Sittser I want to tell you my story.  When I was a young girl my mother died of cancer and I've been in therapy for six years.  I thought to myself this is not a helpful conversation she said no let me continue my story.   “I'm in therapy not because I lost my mother but I lost my father at the same time and he is still alive. He became non functional and so overcome with grief and bitterness that I lost both parents but my dad is still alive.  She said, don't let that happen to you” and she hung up the phone.   Now she didn't give me new information but it was a wonderful reminder to me that the role I was playing was significant.  By my own attitude and spirit I was setting a course and I was giving cues to my children.   Dennis:  You are also making choices for your own life that are going to determine who you become as a man.  I think of the listeners who have eavesdropped today in terms of hearing this story.  I wonder what they are facing because all of us experience loss.  If you live long enough you will experience loss.  The Bible is a very lofty book but it's also a very gritty book that meets us in the midst of our grief.   You made a statement Jerry that I want to underline.  I really understand why a loss can become central to our lives and why the grief that surrounds it can become the defining moment.  It hurts.  It is terrible.  As you describe it it's catastrophic but I like what you did in your book.  You called us away from the focus on the circumstances to focus on the God of all grace and mercy who can bring hope and healing.  He can keep us from becoming embittered in that process.   Bob:  Barbara, in the weeks that followed in the birth and death of your granddaughter Molly you had a lot of people send you quotes and recommend articles or books.  This book was the one God used most powerfully, wasn't it? Barbara:  Yes.  It was.   There were other things, too, but this was the book that I read through that really resonated in my soul.  Jerry talked about not just the loss of death but all kinds of loss and how our identity is wrapped up in how we respond to that loss.  It was really profound in my life.   Bob:  I think both of you will be encouraged to know that we have a lot of listeners over the last several weeks who have contacted us to get a copy of Jerry's book called A Grace Disguised.  We still have copies in our FamilyLife Resource Center.   You can go to our web site FamilyLifeToday.com and find information about Jerry's book which is called A Grace Disguised:  How the Soul Grows Through Loss.  You'll find it available there along with copies of the book that you've just finished writing Barbara along with your daughter Rebecca called A Symphony in the Dark: Hearing God's Voice in Seasons of Grief.  It focuses in on the events of a year ago when your granddaughter Molly was born and lived for seven days and how your family processed that season of grief.   Again both of these books are available from us at FamilyLife Today.  Go to our web site FamilyLife Today.com.  You can order online from us if you'd like or if it's easier call 1-800-FL-TODAY.  That's 1-800-358-6329.  That's 1 800 “F”as in family “L” as in life and then the word TODAY and we can make arrangements to have whichever of these books you'd like or both of them sent out to you. We also want to take a couple of minutes and say thanks to those of you who help underwrite this daily radio program.  Your financial support of FamilyLife Today is what keeps this program on the air.  It helps defray the costs of production and syndication to keep this program on more than a thousand radio stations and outlets all across the country.  It is available online and audio streaming and as a podcast.  Thanks to those of you who help make that happen by making donations on a regular basis for the ministry of FamilyLife Today.   This month if you're able to help with a donation of any amount to the ministry of FamilyLife Today we have a CD we'd like to send you.  This CD features a conversation we had several months ago with Nancy Leigh DeMoss the popular author and speaker and the host of the daily radio program, Revive Our Hearts.  Our conversation was on the subject of forgiveness and what the Bible says about forgiveness.  Nancy has written a great book called Choosing Forgiveness and I know that this is a subject that a lot of people struggle with.  Jerry you addressed it in your book A Grace Disguised.   This CD is our way of saying thank you to you this month when you support the ministry of FamilyLife Today with a donation of any amount.  If you're making that donation online at FamilyLifeToday.com all you have to do is type the word “forgive” in the key code box on the donation form and we'll know to send a copy of the CD to you. Or call toll-free 1 800 FLTODAY.   Make your donation over the phone and just ask for the CD on forgiveness or the CD with Nancy Leigh DeMoss.  Again we are happy to send it to you and we do appreciate your support of this ministry.  Thanks for partnering with us.   Tomorrow we're going to talk about life getting back to normal after a catastrophic event like the one Jerry Sittser experienced almost two decades ago now.  We'll find out if life ever does get back to normal or if it's just a new normal.  I hope you can join us for that.   I want to thank our engineer today Keith Lynch and our entire broadcast production team on behalf of our host Dennis Rainey I'm Bob Lepine.  We will see you back next time for another edition of FamilyLife Today. FamilyLife Today is a production of FamilyLife of Little Rock, Arkansas. Help for today.  Hope for tomorrow. © 2009 FamilyLife   We are so happy to provide these transcripts to you.  However, there is a cost to transcribe, create, and produce them for our website.  If you've benefited from the broadcast transcripts, would you consider donating today to help defray the costs?   Copyright © FamilyLife.  All rights reserved. www.FamilyLife.com

Almost ten million years in the future, the materialises on a vast spacecraft including its own miniature zoo and arboretum. The and are still explaining the basics of their time travel ability to new companion when she starts to show signs of a cold. It is only a matter of time before they are found and taken to the control chamber of the vessel. Their captors are the mute Monoids, seemingly identical alien beings with a single eye. The Monoids live in peace alongside the humans who command the spaceship, their own planet having been destroyed, but often do much of the menial work. The humans in charge of the ship explain that the Earth is about to be destroyed because of the expansion of the sun, and that this ship is an Ark sent into space with the last remnants of humanity, civilization and various forms of flora and fauna. The human Guardians in charge of the craft run a tight ship: failure to conform to rules means either death or miniaturisation until they reach their destination, an Earth-like planet called Refusis II, which takes nearly 700 years to get to. As an amusement during the journey a vast statue is being carved by hand, depicting a human being. Dodo's cold has now spread amongst the Monoid and human populations, but regrettably, they have little natural immunity. When the Commander of the Ark collapses with the malady, the whole ship is placed on alert as Zentos, the Deputy Commander is suspicious of the travellers and believes they have deliberately infected the ship. When the first Monoid dies, there is little the Doctor can say to pacify the angry Guardians. Zentos places the Doctor, Steven and Dodo on trial for their crimes, with a young Guardian called Manyak and the Commander's daughter Mellium as defence. Steven acts as the first defence witness, attacking the closed nature of the minds of the Guardians, but exhausts himself in the process and collapses with the fever. His words have no impact on Zentos, who orders their execution, but the ailing Commander intervenes to protect the three travellers and permit them access to medical equipment to devise a cure to the cold. The Doctor is thus able to recreate the cold vaccine from the membranes of animals on the craft, and this is administered throughout the crew. The Commander, Steven and the others infected are soon on the road to recovery. Their work done, the trio have only time to observe the end of Earth on the long-range scanner before the Doctor leads them back to the TARDIS. Curiously, when the TARDIS rematerialises, they are still on the Ark. However, seven hundred years have passed and there has been a major change: the Monoids are in control. They have completed the statue in the image of themselves, having staged a coup during the long journey. This was made possible by a genetic weakness introduced into the humans, but not the Monoids, by a second wave of the cold virus 700 years earlier. The Monoids also now have voice communicators and use numerical emblems to distinguish each other. The humans are now little more than slaves, with the odd exception like the collaborator subject Guardian Maharis, and have little hope of change. The Doctor and his friends encounter the Monoid leadership, installed in a throne room on the Ark, after which they are sent to the security kitchen to help prepare meals for the Monoids. Two humans, Manissa and Dassuk, believe the moment of their liberation is at hand. Steven tries to help them in a revolt which is unsuccessful. The arrival on Refusis is close at hand and a landing pod is prepared. Monoid 1 wants to make sure that the new world is inhabited only by Monoids, despite promises that the human population will be allowed to live there too. A landing party is assembled – the Doctor, Dodo, Monoid 2 and a subject Guardian named Yendom – and they soon reach Refusis II and start to investigate. A stately castle which seems to be unoccupied is in fact the home to the invisible Refusians, giant beings rendered invisible by solar flares. They welcome their guests and have been expecting them but only want to share the planet with other peaceful beings. Monoid 2 and Yendom flee the castle, and en route Yendom realises the humans will not be allowed to reach Refusis with the Monoids. Monoid 2 kills him and is shortly afterward killed himself when the landing pod explodes. The tension of the situation foments dissent in the Monoid ranks, with Monoid 4 openly opposing Monoid 1's plans to abandon the humans and colonise Refusis without more checks on the planet. Three launchers are sent to the planet, Monoids 1 and 4 commanding them, and when the crews emerge Monoid 4 interprets the destroyed landing pod as evidence of the danger that Monoid 1 has led them to. A civil war erupts between the two Monoid factions. The Doctor, Dodo and a Refusian use the confusion to steal one of the launchers and pilot back to the Ark. The Monoids have placed a bomb on board the ship and plan to evacuate soon to the planet surface, leaving the humans to die on the spaceship. Word of this threat spreads and spurs a human rebellion. The arrival of the Doctor and the Refusian spur things along, and they soon realise the bomb has been placed in the head of the statue. Thankfully the Refusian is able to help dispose of the statue into space before the bomb explodes. The humans now begin to land on Refusis themselves, having been offered support on peaceful terms by the Refusians. Many of the Monoids have been killed in their civil war and those that remain are offered peaceful settlement alongside the other two species. Once more the TARDIS departs, and this time the curiosity is that the Doctor simply vanishes from the TARDIS control room… [] Continuity In , the Earth was also evacuated because of solar flare activity that rendered the biosphere uninhabitable for five thousand years. There, however, the survivors of mankind slept in suspended animation and returned to repopulate the planet after that period had passed. The Earth is seen trailing smoke as it heads towards the Sun at the close of episode two. The Doctor estimate the date as 10,000,000, however in the 2005 episode "", Earth is finally destroyed by the expanding Sun around AD 5,000,000,000. Series writer opines that the fictional alluded to in the revived series of Doctor Who rewrote some historical events, among them the destruction of Earth. The Monoids also feature in the audio drama by . The TARDIS is referenced in the first episode as "that black box" whereas by the time of the third doctor when the series was recorded in color it is obviously a blue police box.
