"I used the data and story of the river section to structure my composition and build a narrative of the river's evolution through time. The composition is started with the sound of the field recording, which means to represent the river in it's free, unchanged state. "Then an attempt to manipulate the course of the river is being introduced, first through the coarse manipulation of the recording itself and then followed by more and more introduction of synthesized elements, which mirrors the even more sophisticated ways of controlling the river's flow until in the midpoint in which the river itself became cramped with man-made elements, mirroring it's current heavily regulated shape."The composition goes more intense and emotional as to depict the realization of heavily regulating river flow may lead to ecological crisis. Then, the man made elements fade out one by one before ending in free flowing river again, mirroring the attempt of naturalization. Upon researching the origin of the name of the Lech river, I learned that the name means "The Stony" so I translated the name of the river into my native-Javanese language: Kaliwatu."Section of the river Lech reimagined by 8110118.-------Flow is a creative exploration telling the story of a river through the power of sound. "I selected an area of the River Lech within the city of Augsburg, Bavaria. I was intrigued by the changing relationship between humans and river, and the different uses of the natural flowing water in this place. I discovered Augsburg is one of the oldest settled places in Germany (around 2000 years). This fuelled my imagination in considering the scale and scope of change- within both humanity, and the natural environment, that the river has borne witness to over time. I was really struck by the impact of human activity on the river, not least the disruption of its natural flow and use of the Lech for multiple hydro-power plants along its course. "I took a walk along several stretches of the water in and around Augsburg and my overwhelming sense was that it needed our care and attention and that we have a responsibility to the guardianship of its course. Within the composition I wanted to depict contrasting sensations that I felt portrayed something of the complexities of this stretch of river, its history, its present and its future, including flux, chaos, beauty, dischord/disharmony and solidarity. "Working with my long-standing collaborator and dear friend, we shared ideas and musical parts back and forth, and spoke about different aspects of the piece, and slowly over quite some time, the elements that seeemed to belong, began to emerge. As this new year is hurled upon us, Cory decided we need to slow things down a bit with what he calls "stony hang movies," AKA movies that are actually about weed for a change. While we have featured movies with Vincent Price mainlining LSD, we have somehow avoided the subject of cannabis itself in the selection of our films altogether, so Cory curated this double feature from the depths of Tubi and Roku's catalogs. In our first movie, Gene Hackman is a crooked LA cop who forces burnt-out rock star Cisco Pike (Kris Kristofferson) to sell 100 keys of primo weed in just 36 hours in CISCO PIKE from Columbia in 1971. This forgotten gem boasts an amazing cast all the way around with Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, TRILOGY OF TERROR) as Cisco's long-suffering girlfriend and Harry Dean Stanton as Cisco's former bandmate. As Cisco makes his way through amazing and sadly gone Los Angeles locations in his frantic quest to unload these bricks of shake, he runs into counterculture characters played by Roscoe Lee Brown, Viva, Joy Bang (MESSIAH OF EVIL), Antonio Fargas (Huggy Bear from STARSKY AND HUTCH), Severn Darden (BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES), and Allan Arbus (M*A*S*H). Don't get too stoned like Philena. Keep it mellow for this one. Streaming on Prime Video and the Roku Channel And then we have the somewhat less lustrous ARNOLD'S WRECKING CO. (1973) where the annoying cousin Arnold makes marijuana into big business in this satire that may be the worst movie we've ever featured on the podcast. We're going to save most of the commentary on this one for the podcast itself, but it's the brainchild of writer/director/star Steven E. de Souza who went on to write the screenplays for DIE HARD (1988) and 48 HOURS (1982). Now streaming on tubi and Pluto. Cory and Philena give their accounts of the Los Angeles fires, and our speculation on what will happen to TikTok is already woefully out-of-date, but we left it in there anyway (it's worse than we imagined folks).
