Lucy Westlake is an American mountaineer, who since the age of 12, has broken world records in the sport. In May 2022, Lucy became the youngest American woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest en route to completing the Explorer's Grand Slam, a mountaineering challenge requiring participants to reach the North and South Poles and climb the high points on all seven continents. In this episode, the recording of which began while Lucy was at the Base Camp of Mount Everest following her historic summit, Alicia and Lucy discuss goal setting and staying committed to one's goals in the face of giant obstacles--like summiting Mount Denali. Lucy provides strategies to remain resilient, even when it feels like what you're working for is far away. She highlights the need to trust one's self and how positive self-talk is critical to attaining what may seem unreachable. Alicia and Lucy also talk about controlling what you can control, and keeping your eyes on the summit. In 2022, Lucy was honored with a Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award at the ESPY's. In the Fall of 2022, she will enroll at the University of Southern California, where she will compete in track and field. A huge thanks to Grape Nuts for facilitating this conversation. Lucy Westlake is the youngest person to climb all 50 high points in the United States, she is an adventurer, explorer, endurance athlete, runner, triathlete, mountaineer, and motivational speaker; she dreams big, sets goals, and works hard to accomplish them. Lucy has been climbing mountains since she could walk. She has a deep love for the outdoors and pushes her physical and mental limits to new heights. Lucy began her high-pointing adventure, climbing to the top of every state's highest mountain, at the age of seven when she and her family visited Black Mountain in Kentucky. Looking at the US geological survey marker on top of the mountain, Lucy and her family began to wonder where other state highpoints were located. They spent the next four hours while driving home looking up and reading about state highpoints. For the next five years, Lucy and her family traveled throughout the United States climbing each state's highest mountain. IN THIS EPISODE … Joe talks to Lucy Westlake about her climbing adventures. It is unusual for a young person to be so determined and focused from such a young age. Not only has Lucy accomplished hiking all high points in the US, but several difficult mountains in the world including Elbrus, in Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia. She doesn't stop with her physical goals and challenging herself, she also has a huge heart and humanitarian side. Lucy is wise beyond her years and partnered with Waterstep to make sure there is safe water for people to drink in underserved areas.
As we wrap up six weeks of exploring what resilience is and how to build it, BEYOND THE CRUCIBLE host Warwick Fairfax and co-host Gary Schneeberger discuss the insights and inspiration offered by guests Stacey Copas, Katie Foulkes, Heather Kampf, Lucy Westlake and Dr. Craig Dowden. Among the wisdom and practical action steps they offered that are discussed in depth here: Resilience is a skill that can be learned just like building muscle in the gym. If you have access to the resources you need to meet the challenges you're facing, you'll be more resilient. You never know when your greatest obstacle will become your greatest opportunity. Failure is inevitable. How you react to it is what matters. Avoidance is a roadblock to resilience. Seventeen-year-old Lucy Westlake is an accomplished mountain climber (she started at age 7) who is the youngest female to have ascended the highest peaks in all 50 U.S. states. But you can't have a peak without a valley – and Lucy also describes the low points she's faced in learning this resonant truth: the ideal way to build resilience is overcoming small failures, so that when the big ones come – and they will -- we have a reservoir of grit to keep climbing. It was a moment seen by tens of millions of people across the globe thanks to a viral video: Heather Kampf falling during the final lap of an 800-meter race in college, then springing to her feet to not just catch her competition, but win. Yet Kampf cautions those amazed by her triumph to take a deeper message away from her 2008 feat than "Never give up." What fueled her miraculous comeback was having a vision for the race long before it started and sticking to that vision when the crucible came. What she discovered about herself during that final lap -- and in the setbacks and struggles before and since -- is that her faith gives her access to another gear critical to harnessing resilience on and off the track. You can watch Heather Kampf's remarkable fall-and-finish during the 2008 Big 10 Track Championships by watching the video in this news story: www.bit.ly/harnessingresilience1. Lucy Westlake is a happy person. You can hear it in her voice (while recording from a car!) as she talks to Spanny about her loved ones, her college plans, and her work for for the WaterStep program that helps bring water to places where it's most needed. Lucy's life is built on faith, family and adventure—by age 17 (two months before this episode) she had climbed the highest points in all 50 states, as well as Kilimanjaro and other peaks around the globe.
