On today's show, we have a lot to talk about. Josh Hoey just ran 1:43.24 for 800 meters—indoors. That's the second-fastest time ever run indoors, behind only Wilson Kipketer. We'll break down what this means for the American 800m scene, how he's addressed skepticism that inevitably comes with a performance like this and whether Hoey is suddenly a legitimate outdoor medal contender.Hobbs Kessler doubled at USAs, taking both the 3000m and 1500m titles like it was just another weekend at the track. We'll talk about what impressed us the most about Kessler's double, how the men's middle distances are shaping up for 2025 and why it was OK for Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker to skip out.And then there's the "rivalry" that was quickly dispelled by the athletes – Nikki Hiltz vs. Shelby Houlihan. Just a few years ago, Houlihan was untouchable. Then came the four-year ban, and now, she's back—and already battling for the top spot. In the 3000m, Houlihan got to the front, squeezed the pace, and dared anyone to come with her. And Nikki Hiltz? They came with her. And then passed her. In the final strides of the women's 3000m, Hiltz outkicked Houlihan, officially stamping themselves as America's best championship racer in the middle distances.Plus, we'll get into the results of the sprints and why the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing might be one of the weirdest global meets we've ever seen—between withdrawals, travel logistics, and a US team that's missing some of its biggest stars.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. So that's a thing now. Rex Maurer has shown the world that even college-aged swimmers can drop nearly 7 seconds in their best event as if he hit a growth spurt. Maybe he did. The Texas sophomore is only a summer and fall semester into his time in Austin following his transfer from Stanford where he had a solid freshman year. But this Longhorn mid-distance crew is different. It is stacked with hitters, as demonstrated with Carson Foster breaking the American Record in the 500 about an hour before Rex decided he'd like that title on his CV. Maybe this reset the 500 freestyle has seen in recent years (see also Leon Marchand's otherworldly underwater freak show 4:02 from 2023) will translate to the long course 400 and finally deliver the much-awaited sub 3:40 that has eluded the world's greatest swimmers since Thorpee. Rex Maurer, the son of an Olympic swimmer and head USC coach Lea Maurer, swam lifetime bests in the 400IM, 1650, and 200 freestyle, all at a mid-season invite, and he is now expected to haul in points for Texas at the 2025 NCAAs as one of THE swimmers to watch in March.

Join me on this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast as I sit down with the electric Chaunté Lowe! From Olympic high jumper to motivational speaker, Chaunté's journey is a testament to resilience, integrity, and the power of a positive mindset. Chaunté reflects on her progression in athletics, from earning a retroactive Olympic bronze to becoming a world champion. With deep-rooted values of hard work and preparation, she offers insights that parallel our own themes of hope and positivity. Her ability to relate her Olympic journey to helping people find their own “Olympics” in life is truly inspiring. Her childhood in Riverside, California, underscored by poverty and domestic violence, shaped her resilience and commitment to breaking the cycle through education and mentorship.  This episode is brimming with heartfelt stories, valuable insights, and Chaunté's undeniable spirit!   About Chaunté, Chaunté Lowe is the story of determination perseverance and strength.  Not only is Lowe a mother of 3, a wife and a finance professional; she is also a professional athlete, an American Record Holder, a 4-time Olympian, a 3-Time World Championship medalist, and 12 times US National Champion. When speaking she is true to how she performs. She is animated, entertaining and humorous. She dances and plays to the crowd as she shares her stories of beating impossible odds, time and time again. She possesses the ability to keep the group engaged and hanging on her every word or jump. Those who get a chance to encounter her leave inspired and motivated. Her infectious personality is electrifying.  You can't help but leave an interaction with her with a winning, "I can do ANYTHING" attitude. Lowe was able to realize her childhood dream of going to the Olympics at only 20-years-old, making her the first woman from Georgia Tech's track and field team to become an Olympian.  The following year, Lowe won silver at the 2005 World Championships to become the first American woman to win a world outdoor championships high jump medal since Louise Ritter won bronze at the inaugural event in Helsinki in 1983. Lowe is always a crowd favorite with impossibly defined abs, dramatic dance moves, and even the occasional backflip. Lowe graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in economics. In 2008 she represented her country again in the high jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Days after returning from the 2012 Olympic Games, started teaching trigonometry at Grayson High School in Atlanta. Married triple jumper Mario Lowe on August 21, 2005, and gave birth to daughter Jasmine in July 2007 and Aurora in April 2011 and Mario Josiah in 2013.  Lowe has broken the American Record 3 Times and is the current indoor and outdoor American Record holder with 2.02m (6'-7.5”) and 2.05 (6'8.75”) meters respectively. In addition to her Olympic Games appearances, she has represented the United States on six world championship teams. The story is not over; she most recently represented the US in her fourth Olympic Games in the summer of 2016 and is showing no signs of stopping any time soon. Don't be surprised to see her jumping in her 5th Olympic Games in Tokyo the summer of 2020.   Here's some additional resources for you... Ryan Murphy is a nine-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer, but it hasn't all been podium glory. At this summer's Paris Games, Ryan missed qualifying for the men's 100 meter backstroke by one tenth of a second. And that was after he had just won silver in the 200 meter.  It's these extraordinary swings between triumph and disappointment that Ryan is so brilliant at managing. Through it all, he's learned to roll with the lows just as easily as he celebrates the highs. There are few endeavours that can match the intense 24-7, 365 day per year commitment and pressure of being an Olympian, and in this episode, we get lessons in stress management and keeping things in perspective that anyone can use. From his early years in competitive swimming when he actually vomited from nerves before every race, to his philosophical views on winning and losing, Ryan takes us through a career that's been built on family and team support, and incredible focus and drive. He also discusses his passion project, opening his St. Johns. Florida location of Goldfish Swim School, and helping to share the joyful and lifesaving skill of swimming. You don't want to miss this great conversation as we get an Olympic icon's valuable wisdom  on performing under pressure, the power of a team, dealing with the unknowns, and yes, managing the expectations. About Ryan MurphyRyan Murphy began breaking records as soon as he started swimming at age 5. Through dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment, Ryan has fulfilled his academic and athletic dreams. While at the University of California, Berkeley, he won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events at the NCAA Championships for four straight years. He holds the American Record in multiple backstroke events. In his Olympic debut in Rio, Ryan won three golds medals, sweeping the backstroke events and helping the U.S. win gold in the 4x100m medley relay, where his backstroke lead-off set a world record. As one of the most dominant swimmers in the world, the 23-year-old swept the backstroke events at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, won six medals (three gold and three silver) at the 2018 Swimming World Championships in Hangzhou, China, and was named the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year by USA Swimming. In 2021, he shined in Tokyo winning gold in the 4×100 meter medley relay, silver in the 200-meter backstroke and bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. A native of Ponte Vedra Beach (Jacksonville), Fla., Murphy is passionate about giving every young child the opportunity to learn how to swim and being a role model for young swimmers.  Connect with Ryan & Goldfish Swim SchoolsRyan Murphy websiteRyan on Instagram @ryan_f_murphyGoldfish Swim School Instagram Goldfish Swim School website About The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “We're kind of on this journey to the marathon. The next logical step is a half marathon. That will be in the new year. We don't know exactly where yet but we want to go attack a half marathon. That's what all the training is focused on and that's why it's been so fun. Not that the training is easy but it's the training that comes the most naturally to me.” My guest for today's episode is U.S. Olympian Joe Klecker of the On Athletics Club. He joins us with some news that he's gearing up for his half marathon debut in early 2025 after a challenging comeback from injury. Joe is back and looking to tackle a new distance with a keen eye on Ryan Hall's American record in the half marathon. While his 2024 outdoor season was sidelined by a torn abductor, he's now fully focused on the 13.1 mile distance. He doesn't say it, but I think all signs point that it will likely be at the Houston Half Marathon in January, which is traditionally perfect weather and very fast. And while he's not quite ready to step away from the track just yet, Joe is already embracing the marathon mindset and this is one step forward to getting to the full distance with a personal best of 12:54 for 5K and 27:07 for 10K.  Joe's incredible speed and dedication are setting him up for a strong entry into the longer distance. THE EMILY SISSON SPECIAL  Emily Sisson is one of the greatest US Distance Runners of all-time, and she still has her best running ahead of her. At every level, Emily has been ABSOLUTELY dominant.  In high school, Emily qualified for the prestigious Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships all four years, a feat that has barely been replicated throughout history.  In college, at Providence College, Emily was a two-time NCAA champion, winning titles in the 5000m at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in 2015. She also set a collegiate indoor record for the women's 5000m with a time of15:12.22 at the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships.  Emily turned pro in 2015 with New Balance and continued to train under her college coach, Ray Tracey, and has all the way up to the present day.  As a pro, Emily has set multiple American Records, including the American Record in the Marathon, which stands to this day. It was set at the 2022 Chicago Marathon, where she ran 2:18:29. Emily made the US Olympic team this past summer in the Marathon after placing 2nd at the US Olympic Trials in Orlando in February.  In today's conversation, Emily takes me through the biggest lessons and learnings from her successful career, her years in high school and how she's always fallen back on her love for the sport, her ambitions for the future, and so much more. I absolutely loved this conversation and the opportunity to pick Emily's brain on so many topics. This one is packed with wisdom! "We'll see what happens. We'll all find out on Sunday.” A brief chat with Keira D'Amato, Emma Bates and Sara Hall before the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Unfortunately did not have the time to catch Betsy Saina. From our race preview on CITIUSMAG.com: The American showdown may become a chase for Emily Sisson's American record, as three of the five fastest women in U.S. history will be on the start line alongside 2021 Chicago runner-up Emma Bates, Chavez's pick to take down the record. Keira D'Amato, who held this record for just under nine months in 2022, will be racing 26.2 miles for the first time since moving to Utah to train with coach Ed Eyestone. We won't know until Sunday exactly what her and Eyestone's race plan looks like, but don't be surprised if she's in the mix for the top American crown. 2024 U.S. leader Betsy Saina, whose fifth-place finish in Tokyo in 2:19:17 was a huge leap forward, figures to be a prominent player as well. 2016 Olympic 1500m champion Matthew Centrowitz is set to be pacing this pack as they go after 2:18:29, so that will be something to keep an eye on even if the leaders are well ahead.

We were extra carb-loaded for this awesome episode! The main training topic was on a new study looking at how strength work changes muscle fiber properties over time. Strength training seemed to reverse the aging clock! We dig into the nuances of what it means and how to apply the findings for endurance athletes of all ages. Invest in a big kettlebell now. The juiciest topic was the upheaval in trail running after UTMB's Whistler fiasco. It's a story as old as time, with the big power player throwing their weight around and responding to push-back with weak apologies. Now, a new World Trail Majors series is stepping up to go head-to-head with the juggernaut. What comes next? We have some ideas. Get ready to swirl around in a controversy that could determine the future of trail running, with implications that apply across participant sports. And that was just the start of the fun! Other topics: getting up from the couch after periods of forced rest, improving recovery rates during hard training, a new American Record at 50 miles, a wild (true?) story from swimming featuring Diana Nyad, an update on the drama surrounding the USATF Marathon Trials, retirement in trail running, cut-off times, e-bikes, creatine supplementation, and hot takes. Somehow, we discuss the plot of the 1995 movie Casper. We hadn't seen it in 18 years, so get ready for a whimsical game of telephone with the deranged movies we showed kids in the 90s. "We were like, what if Emily and Keira tied? What if they cross the line together and they tied? And we said, well what if we had a cage match? Like it was a tie, and then it came down to a cage match?" Their wives are the fastest distance runners in the country. Today, we turn the spotlight to the sidelines to hear from the husbands. Shane Quinn is married to American record holder in the marathon and former American record holder in the half marathon, Emily Sisson. Tony D'Amato is married to American record holder in the half-marathon and former American record holder in the marathon, Keira D'Amato. And while their wives have been breaking — and trading — records, Shane and Tony have been bonding behind the scenes. In this wildly fun episode, Shane and Tony D. talk about what it's like being married to professional runners at the top of their game, about how they've learned to show up and show their support, about how to be a supportive partner without sacrificing their own goals and dreams, and about...cage matches. “I think the only time I thought about that American record was that last 100m because I was like, ‘You have to beat Elise no matter what. If you guys are going fast enough and you're not in front of her, she's going to get it.' I think I barely outleaned her and ended up getting sixth. The results took forever to load and come up on the screen but when they did it was such a party because everyone set their national record. Seven of us were out there stoked. At this event, everyone is so happy for everyone. It's cool to see the camaraderie. We know that if one of us is going to do well, we're all going to rise to that.” Nikki Hiltz is putting together one of the most impressive outdoor seasons. Last month was an absolute triumph for Nikki, as they clinched the U.S. 1500m title, kicking to victory ahead of the likes of the 800m Olympic champion Athing Mu, U.S. Olympian Cory McGee and the reigning U.S. champion, Sinclaire Johnson. My interview with Nikki went viral after they dedicated the victory to the transgender community. Now, Nikki is gearing up for their second career world championships. Back in 2019, in their very first season as a professional runner, they made it to the 1500m final. Since then, they've continued to progress and currently holding the U.S. titles in the indoor and outdoor 1500m, as well as the road mile. Nikki took their momentum to Monaco, where they clocked a jaw-dropping 4:16.35, shattering Mary Slaney's American record that had stood tall since 1985. It was awesome to see so many national records fall in that race behind Faith Kipyegon's world record. In this conversation, we dive deep into their unforgettable performance at the U.S. Championship, that epic race in Monaco, and what they're looking forward to at the World Championships in Budapest next month.  Nikki is not only a phenomenal athlete but an incredible human being as well. Their passion and dedication shine on and off the track, making them an absolute joy to root for. "Being injured it's so easy to think, 'This is it! This is all she wrote! That was a good run, Keira.' You can't help but let your mind go there. It was the fact that I was able to have another high and I never thought I'd get to experience anything like I experienced in Houston with that day. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime thing that I got to experience. Part of me said, 'That might be it!' The fact that I experienced something else that was a different kind of high and win was special. That week, I doubted if I would even make it to the starting line. My daughter was having a hard time with me going so there was a lot of mom guilt going on...It was a lot of doubts and insecurities. The whole time 'hope' was a word that kept coming to mind. I hoped that I could get through it. I hoped that I would have another moment. I hoped that I could hit a big goal like that again. I was positive but you just never know if it will happen. That's where all the emotion came from." Keira D'Amato is back on the show after breaking the American record in the half marathon. Just two weeks ago, she ran 1:06:39 at the Asics Half Marathon in Gold Coast, Australia. She took 13 seconds off the previous record held by Emily Sisson. This is getting fun because Sisson broke D'Amato's marathon American record last fall in Chicago. This was a big moment for D'Amato after she was forced to pull out of April's London Marathon due to inflammation in her knee.
