Jimmy will be so proud! His Mom and Dad are guesting on the Mulligan Stew Podcast. Jimmy is the 10-year-old son of Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet of Whitehorse. Jimmy likes the music his Mom and Dad make so much that he's sitting in on drums during house rehearsals. Luke and Melissa have just released their 8th album I'm not crying You're crying. What started as a possible lockdown country covers project quickly turned into writing their own songs, as though they were writing and singing in the 70s. In Nashville. What's best about this album is they sound like they've been writing and singing country all their musical life. Which is what they did. When they met and started Whitehorse it was as a country band. So, they've come full circle. Through the blues and back into country. This podcast tells the tales of those years and their relationship. It's a winner and so are Jimmy's parental unit. www.whitehorsemusic.ca
For the first episode of our third season, we are so excited to be joined by Glenn Milchem. Most of us know Glenn as the drummer from Blue Rodeo a band he joined in 1992 after cutting his teeth with Groovy Religion, The Plasterscene Replicas, Vital Sines, and of course, as the drummer on Change of Heart's Smile. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he played with the Swallows, Starvin' Hungry, Holy Fuck, Luke Doucet, Andrew Cash, and a slew of other great Canadian bands. Join us as we discuss The Silver Jews' album "Natural Bridge".
CKUA's Hidden Track Podcast returns for Season 4! Kicking things off in 2023 is (currently) Manitoba-based folk rock duo Whitehorse! Composed of husband-and-wife duo Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, Whitehorse's sound spans from folk/americana to groove-driven pop rock. Doucet and McClelland have always been talented musicians, and both had successful solo careers before joining forces as Whitehorse. Released on January 13, 2023, the duo's eighth studio album, "I'm Not Crying, You're Crying", marks a tonal shift to the melancholic sounds of hurtin' classic country. Spurred on by feelings of loneliness and isolation due to the pandemic, I'm Not Crying, You're Crying has been described as a "breakup album with the world." Songs like If The Loneliness Don't Kill Me and 6 Feet Away serve as a cry for human connection, written during a time when those connections were increasingly hard to find. In our first episode of Hidden Track Season 4, "Whitehorse | Breaking Up With Society", Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland join CKUA's Grant Stovel from their Manitoba home to discuss the inspirations behind their latest album, how it feels to be touring again, the duo's musical origins (including a story of 14-year-old Luke's blues band) and so much more!
This week, we bring you our first episode hosted by Manus Hopkins, one of Canadian Musician's editors, who has taken up the mantle of podcast host from Mike Raine. We're sad to see Mike go and know he'll be missed, but the podcast will go on, and we hope you'll all continue to tune in each week. Today's interview is with Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet, the husband-and-wife duo that forms Hamilton folk-rock band Whitehorse. Whitehorse's new album, I'm Not Crying, You're Crying, is out January 13. Here, Doucet and McClelland take us through the process of making new music together in lockdown, and share stories from throughout the band's career about how they became the group they are today. They even set the record straight about how they really chose their name.
This week on The Road The Stage… WHITEHORSE, the versatile and talented band of Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. Peter Michaels saw Whitehorse for the first time just before the pandemic, and he's been itching to see them again. Thankfully, he and Patrick Bateman will see Whitehorse at Bo's Bar & Stage in a matter of days. Until then, learn more about Whitehorse - their process, not sticking to the same sound, prairie sushi, moving to Winnipeg and lots more. Follow Whitehorse here and get ready for their January 13 release of I'm Not Crying, You're Crying. Recorded and produced at Communal Creative Studios in Red Deer, Alberta. Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is thebuzzr podcast. Independent music releases, global coverage. Welcome & enjoy. Episode 71. First, music trivia for August 16th. August 16, 1977, we lost the “King of Rock ‘n' Roll” Elvis Presley. RIP Elvis. We feature String Bone today. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne is the architect of String Bone. String Bone brings Payne's true life narratives close to the ear with tender arrangements supporting his gruff sincerity, well worn by the rumble of the road. The career of Payne in music has spanned from performing to working the back end. He is the founder of the first Canadian Songwriter's Association. The artist is a gift to Canada. An incredible talent. “Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart & soul.” Enjoy the show! Tracks "Waiting For My Dying Day" 31:38:40 "Two Stars Collide" 39:50:88 From the artist Source Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart & soul Heart and home are often elusive for those whose spirits are drawn to the open road. Sit back, buckle up and ride along with String Bone down winding highways, around sharp turns, on great escapes and daring rescues with searching songs in pursuit of home for an unbound heart. An unbreakable bone nut creates the essential contact point between a guitar's strings and the wooden body; String Bone draws the chaotic vibrations of the restless heart closer to its desire for gravity with songs of adventure bearing the weight left behind. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne is the architect of String Bone, and brings listeners to a collection of artfully designed songs and stories with "Love & Highways", his latest full-length recording. String Bone brings Payne's true life narratives close to the ear with tender arrangements supporting his gruff sincerity, well worn by the rumble of the road. Many of Payne's songs on 'Love & Highways' as well as his debut 'nadir' drive through darkness, betrayal and remorse towards love, light, escape and freedom on the road ahead with String Bone at the wheel. Payne shares struggles with relationships, and wrestles in the aftermath of lost wishes and broken dreams with an eye towards the next adventure. Unraveling ten melodic originals and two well-chosen covers from Neil Young and Radiohead, 'Love & Highways' features a full complement of players including pedal steel by Steve Wood, electric guitar by the album's producer Shannon Lyon, cello by Ben Bolt-Martin and violins by Payne's 'Rant Maggie Rant' band-mate Lindsay Schindler. In the passenger seat on "Love & Highways" is a stellar collection of guest vocalists including Sarah Jane Scouten, Mae Moore and longtime String Bone collaborator Ginger St. James, who also co-wrote 'Where Do You Go'. Violinist Lindsay Schindler also contributes to trio harmonies on a soaring cover of Neil Young's "Birds" with Trent Severn collaborators Dayna Manning and Emm Gryner. Roman Tome (New Country Rehab) contributes background vocals to "Somber Eyes", as well as percussion on five of the album's tracks. "Love & Highways" was recorded by Shannon Lyon at Lyon's Lake Studio in Point Clark and Bayfield, Ontario at sessions through 2015 and 2016, with additional sessions at Stratford's Knox Presbyterian Church by John Hazen (Loreena McKennitt, Rita Chiarelli, Harry Belafonte). He has shared the stage with Juno (Canada's Grammy) nominees and winners and some among them include Bill Bourne, Danny Michel, Emm Gryner, Luke Doucet, Loreena McKennitt, Linda McRae, Jenny Whitely and he has collaborated with the likes of Ginger St. James, Shannon Lyon, Bob Egan (ex-Blue Rodeo, ex-Wilc https://youtu.be/XkGy9gck92Y Video conceptualized, directed and edited by Emma Hefkey: emmahefkey @ hotmail dot com Song: Waitin' For My Dyin' Day Artist: String Bone (with George Leger III) (Written by Barry James Payne and George Leger III) https://youtu.be/DAzjn99qHCk
Couch Riffs is very happy to have Luke Doucet as a guest. I've been a longtime fan of Luke's music and, in particular, his guitar playing. We cover a lot of stuff here, but don't really talk much about guitar playing, oddly enough. But, I mean, how boring is it to TALK about guitar playing. Playing guitar is much more fun. We do manage to talk about drugs, 70s/80s glam music, homophobia and drugs, though. I hope you enjoy! On today's Fretboard Journal Podcast, we talk to the amazing guitarist Luke Doucet of Whitehorse. Doucet tells us about his upbringing in Canada and his relatively late start into the world of guitars, along with the fateful day he met his original guitar teacher in Winnipeg. We then hear about how Doucet is turning his own young son Jimmy onto music and guitars and how Jimmy (at the ripe old age of three) inadvertently helped shape the sound of Whitehorse's 2017 album, Panther in the Dollhouse. We also talk guitars, including Doucet's Gretsch White Falcon, his Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster, his Creston Lea offset and others. This episode is sponsored by Retrofret Vintage Guitars.
Jen is away this week, so Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland — otherwise known as musical duo Whitehorse — were kind enough to fill in for her. They are currently on tour in support of their new record, Panther in the Dollhouse, and Erin caught up with them at the Burt before their Winnipeg show this week to talk about the record(and they perform a song from it!) and the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault allegations currently rocking the entertainment world.
Michael, Sinead and Tim get together to chat with Luke Doucet, a musician from the band Whitehorse who will race in Ottawa the morning after playing a gig. Following that, Tim has a conversation with an incredibly inspiring man who will also be running in Ottawa. Ken Douglas received a double-lung transplant and talks to us about preparing to run in the capital after such a life-changing experience.
Today a celebration of the birthdays of Luke Doucet and Slaid Cleaves, as well as a belated tribute to Stan Rogers, a week after the 30th anniversary of his death (oops.) And the great new music just keeps on coming, with a couple more stellar summer releases.

A birthday dedication and a special request got us off to a rockin’ start today, before we settled in for some concert news and rumours, and a whole bunch of great new music out of the mail bag.

Whitehorse is made up of husband and wife duo Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet. Both are strong artists in their own right but together they really are better than the individual parts. Check them out as they perform two songs from their debut CD and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's I'm on Fire.
The beginning of another school year is upon us, and I’m not feeling all that excited about that. Sadly, this means that this glorious summer is coming to an end, and the only thing that’s numbing the pain and getting me moving is some classic 90s music from my musical glory days. Hopefully some listeners will get some joy out of my glory days, as this week, it’s New Year, Old Skool, with some classic Canadian indie-rock.

This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of the best damn club on the planet, and arguably our city’s most important music venue, The Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club. John Scoles & his team down there are doing the Lord’s work, even though they’ve got a whole lotta devil in ‘em. They’ve given us some amazing musical memories over the past 10 years, and we’re absolutely sure that there are many more yet to come. This week’s show is all about the church at Main & St. Mary, with music and memories galore. Here’s to many more!

Hey, hey, it’s our (unofficial) birthday! Steel Belted Radio kicked off on September 11, 2003, and that means that T-Bar and I have managed not to kill each other for 7 full years! To kick off year #8, we heard from our latest MIA co-host! We also heard some new, some notable, and some weird. After 7 years, we’re still sticking to that format!

We're joined by special co-host "Tony" today, which always makes things a little more fun. We play a musical game of connect-the-dots, hear some brilliant new music from Del Barber, some summer songs, a whole bunch of NQ Arbuckle (and related) music, and more!

A busy night with some very special, very exciting guests, live in-studio. First up is the wonderful artist behind one of this year's most beautiful albums, Rose Cousins. Her voice and reputation have been well known to us, since she's appeared on dozens of great albums that we love, but we're finally getting to know how great she is on her own. She dropped by to chat and play us some of her gorgeous songs. Next in was a hot, up-and-coming roots-rock combo from Ottawa called Silver Creek. They're young boys with a heap of talent and they showed off some of their great songs.

Celebrating International Women's Day in true TTBTGH style, a week late... We pulled out some of our favourite ladies, we let the gentlemen in with a couple of timely songs featuring ladies, and one request, because we love our listeners. Most of all though, we love good music, and man, woman, child, whatever, it's all good to us!

Tons of great new music made its way into my ears recently, so we just had to share much of it. That sent us off in all kinds of directions (as these things often do.) This week's history lesson segment was on the late great Steve Goodman and we heard a few of his best. Last up, a brief prelude to the upcoming homecoming by Luke Doucet and the lovely Amelia Curran. .

A very special celebration of great music and great friends, as we opened up the studio doors for listeners to drop by, say hello, and check out the best of 2008. Jaine was on hand with awesome holiday cookies, Jeremy was on hand for his first ever radio appearance, KK came by to help keep things running, and loyal listener Dean sat in. Many other great friends came and went, and through it all, we managed to get in some of the best music of '08 as well as a few festive classics. Also, an interview with one of my favourite discoveries of the year, Edmonton's Chloe Albert, recent winner of Best New/Emerging Artist at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

The past couple of weeks may have left you wondering whether we were still focussing on acoustic-based independent singer/songwriters, after our R.E.M theme and last week's Neil Young tribute, so this week we're back to basics with some classic singer/songwriters, some great new music from folks like Ryan Adams, Ray Lamontagne, Lucinda Williams, Luke Doucet, and more. Yeah, we played a Pince cover, a Radiohead cover, and a Beatles cover, but you just can't entirely overhaul the format overnight!

Part Tom Waits, part Luke Doucet, singer-songwriter Jesse Dee simply is a true revelation.
A Super-sized year end spectacular as we took over the airwaves for 3.5 hours of goodness. First up, some holiday celebration songs in honour of the new year. Then, January 1 is the anniversary of the deaths of two of the greatest songwriters of all time, Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt, and any good singer/songwriter show host worth his salt knows that its his duty to pay tribute. Next up, a good friend of Townes Van Zandt was a guy named Blaze Foley. He is one of the most underrated songwriters of all time, but I've been into him in a big way lately, and so a few songs in hopes that we can get him just a little more well known. One of the best albums of 2008 is sure to be Luke Doucet's new one, which I got my hands on recently. It features Luke's best work to date in his already impressive career, but it also brings to mind yet another new genre of music, songs about Rick Danko, so we looked at some of those and some of Danko's greatest songs. As a new year causes us to look forward, I also tend to look back, so I took a trip down musical memory lane with a bunch of songs from my glory days of musical discovery.
