Meanwhile, the Congress has decided to hold a nationwide protest on June 21 (Friday) demanding justice for the NEET candidates.Patna High Court set aside the Bihar government's notifications to raise reservations in government jobs and educational institutions from 50 per cent to 65 per cent today. On 7th of November last year, the Nitish Kumar-led Mahagathbandhan government raised the Bihar quota and reservation in the state effectively became 75 per cent when the 10 per cent quota for economically weaker sections (EWS) is taken into consideration. The bench said that it is “infringing upon right to equality”.The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Tamil Naidu increased to 34 today, with around 100 others hospitalised — five of them in critical condition. The play, loosely based on the Ramayana, sparked protests from a section of students who alleged it was disrespectful to Hinduism and derogatory towards Ram and Sita. At least seven other students were penalised, but the nature of disciplinary action and quantum of fine, could not be ascertained.Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stones of multiple development projects in Jammu and Kashmir today. Why Prashant Kishor's lunch meet is giving Modi rivals a taste of 2024. An anti-BJP Mahagathbandhan minus Congress for 2024 isn't a bad idea. But a pre-poll umbrella of parties with influence over 300 seats can be a formidable entity, theoretically. The Indian benchmark indices scaled new highs with the S&P BSE Sensex topping the 43,000 level for the first-time ever on Tuesday amid favourable news on Covid vaccine front. The markets, once again, are likely to open higher tracking global cues, but investors might stick to stock-specific approach. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 index slipped slightly and the Nasdaq closed sharply lower in overnight deals as vaccine optimism led investors away from market leaders and toward cyclical stocks associated with economic recovery. The Dow Jones rose 0.9 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 0.14 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.37 per cent. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump will push ahead with longshot legal challenges to his loss to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden in last week's election, as Republican officials at the state and federal level lined up behind him. Also, US Federal Reserve policymakers has said that a surge in coronavirus cases threatens to slow economic growth once more and that more targeted government aid was needed. Asian shares rose on Wednesday as hopes for a successful coronavirus vaccine lifted expectations of a swift reopening of the global economy, which would help the region’s heavily trade-dependent markets. Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 climbed 1 per cent, Japan's Nikkei added 1.1 per cent while Hong Kong's main index was flat. In commodities, oil also ended nearly 3 per cent higher with Brent settling at $44.05, up 3.89 per cent. Back home, media reports suggest ACC, Adani Green, Balkrishna Industries, Ipca Labs, and YES Bank have been included in the MSCI India index along with seven other stocks. Meanwhile, Bosch, and LIC Housing Finance have been removed from the list. The changes will be effective December 1, 2020. A stellar performance by the BJP enabled the ruling NDA to attain a simple majority in the Bihar assembly notwithstanding a sharp fall in the tally of the JD(U) headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, according to final results announced early Wednesday. The NDA won 125 seats, clearing the majority mark in the 243-member Assembly while the Mahagathbandhan won 110 seats. On the results front, state-owned NMDC on Tuesday posted over 10 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 773 crore for the September quarter, on account of reduced expenses. Moreover, the company also approved share buyback worth Rs 1,378 crore for 4.29 per cent equity stake. A total of 628 companies including Coal India, Aurobindo Pharma, and Indiabulls Housing Finance are scheduled to announce their quarterly results today. Punjab & Sind Bank yesterday said the government has okayed infusion of Rs 5,500 crore capital into the bank in lieu of preferential allotment of shares. The capital infusion, the lender said, is towards the contribution of the central government in the preferential allotment of equity shares of the bank during FY21. And, Gland Pharma’s IPO was subscribed 21 per cent on Tuesday, a day before its close. The offering has received bids for 6.4 million shares as against 30 million on offer.
As the ruling NDA appears to be inching towards victory in the Bihar polls with its rival RJD led Mahagathbandhan continuing to give it a close fight, voters can only hope the parties and politicians will walk the talk on what they promised them with regards to the state's development. Also, with JD (U) chief and CM Nitish Kumar garnering a lesser number of seats, it will be interesting to see if he will be his old assertive self in his new inning as CM which seems to be most likely the case again. The voter has spoken and spoken well, that's all one can say. The close fight in many seats and incoming results have a message for all. Overall this election has some takeaways for all - political parties, politicians, voters, and Indian democracy itself as a whole. Listen in! Are national issues like NRC-CAA or Ram Mandir being able to dictate votes in the state elections? If we have to go by what the Jharkhand state assembly election results are saying, the state has voted against anti-incumbency and ousted the BJP despite the rhetoric that came from star campaigners like Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Jharkhand is the third state to go to polls this year, after Haryana and Maharashtra and the magic hasn't quite worked for the BJP beyond the general elections this year. What worked for the Mahagathbandhan in Jharkhand and what didn't work for the BJP – and the incumbent state chief minister Raghubar Das? The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance’s spectacular victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was propelled by a near complete sweep in the Hindi heartland. The BJP and its allies won 203 out of 225 seats in Hindi-speaking states, the United Progressive Alliance won just seven seats and the Mahagathbandhan won 15 seats. This was particularly surprising as the party had lost three key Hindi heartland states to the Congress in the Assembly elections just six months ago. Many have argued that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity cut across caste and economic backgrounds, at least among Hindu voters. This is largely accurate with a few state-specific exceptions. However, the Lokniti-CSDS post poll survey reveals that a sizeable chunk of Dalit voters in the Hindi heartland may still have voted for the Opposition even though the BJP’s popularity among Dalit voters did increase significantly.
An assortment of exit poll data, including grossly unscientific ‘mean’ figures in the so-called ‘poll of polls’, has been put on the table. Till actual counting on 23 May – people will, depending on their political orientation and which pollster they decide to go with – rejoice or grieve. As per CVoter, the Congress-led UPA is projected to get 128 seats, while the BJP-led NDA could bring in a total of 287. The Congress by itself is projected to get 80 seats, while BJP alone is projected to win 236 seats. The Mahagathbandhan looks set to grab 40 seats, while the TMC in Bengal is set to get 29 seats. However, given the inconsistent track record of pollsters over several elections, exit polls at best, give only a general sense of the direction India is heading in. At worst, they could have got everything wrong. It is obvious that much depends on the final tally. It would determine equations among parties, and decide who gets to sit with who in the Treasury Benches in Parliament, or are relegated to the Opposition rows. At this stage thereby, several scenarios are in store, and it is worth examining these, as India's social, economic and political future will vary, based on which of these possibilities become reality. In random order, let us take the most talked-about post-poll scenario in the run-up to the long, cacophonous, bordering on loutish, electoral campaign. * The temperature and Indian politics is heating up as the country gears up for the sixth phase of elections on 12 May. Hey guys, I’m Sonal and you’re listening to the My Vote 2019 Podcast, your one stop shop for daily election related developments. * As you know, AAP held a press conference over the distribution of pamphlets with extremely derogatory and casteist language against its East Delhi candidate Atishi Marlena allegedly circulated by the BJP candidate Gautam Gabhir. And now our elections has officially hit a new low. But Atishi has filed a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women and in turn, Gambhir has sent a defamation notice to Atishi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia for alleging that he circulated these pamphlets. Gambhir first said he will quit politics if it can be proven he distributed these pamphlets, then he also said he would hang himself. * While addressing a rally in Haryana, Prime Minister Modi slammed Congress for its leader Sam Pitroda’s remark, “Hua so hua” for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Modi said these three words summed up the Congress’s arrogance. Pitroda in response hit out at BJP for twisting his words and distorting facts to hide their own failures. * Andhra Pradesh CM and Telugu Desam Party president Chandrababu Naidu held a closed door discussion with his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee in Kharagpur on future plans of the Mahagathbandhan. Naidu and Didi also discussed whether she will attend the meeting of opposition parties to discuss future plans, set to be held on 21 May. * And your last update for the day, in a relief for Delhi voters, the Delhi Metro will begin services two hours earlier on polling day. The train services will begin at 4am instead of 6am on 12 May. * That was your quick 2019 My Vote Elections wrap for the day. I am no admirer of Mr Modi, but I think that former BSF jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav was not the ideal opponent to the prime minister, notwithstanding the media going ballistic over the rejection of his (Yadav’s) nomination papers. Yadav, in a surprise move, was made a joint candidate of the Mahagathbandhan, to fight the PM from Varanasi. Allotted the symbol of the Samajwadi Party, the fight is unlikely to happen, unless the Supreme Court – which Yadav has threatened to approach, alleging bias – overturns the decision of the Returning Officer. Masood Azhar was been blacklisted by the UNSC as a global terrorist, on 1 May. And it couldn’t have come at a better time for the BJP which is campaigning for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s re-election before the remaining phases which has some crucial constituencies in the Hindi heartland go to polls. On the other hand, there seem to be glaring differences among the parties in opposition about the Congress cutting into the Mahagathbandan’s vote share in certain constituencies. BSP chief Mayawati, on May 2, accused the BJP and Congress of having a tacit understanding and unitedly working against the SP-BSP alliance. All this and more on this episode of Chunav Tracker. In this Hafta, Hartosh Singh Bal, Caravan's political editor magazine, joins Newslaundry managing editor Raman Kirpal, editor Manisha Pande, opinion writer Anand Vardhan and host Abhinandan Sekhri. The group discusses Priyanka Gandhi’s official entry into politics, the Mahagathbandhan, Ajit Doval’s son's defamation plea against the Caravan, EVM hacking and more. The Caravan’s defamation case becomes a springboard for a discussion on corruption. Abhinandan asks Anand, “Do you really think it is possible...for any prime minister to claim na khaunga na khaane dunga?” Anand replies, “Cronyism and corruption are related to it, they are a part of the body politic of elite accommodation, particularly visible in third-world political societies. I think all parties have this patronage system.” Hartosh adds: “People with an average income, below a crore, are not represented in our Parliament, simply because that is what has happened to our politics. It is today a plutocracy, or a democracy of the rich, in terms of who’s appointed to power and it is getting propagated by our easy acceptance of that cronyism.”The panel also discusses the Mahagathbandhan and Mamta Banerjee as a prime ministerial candidate. Manisha asks, “Is she really positioning herself as a prime ministerial candidate?” Raman says, “The post-election scenario is supposed to decide who is going to be the prime minister...Anybody can [be PM], even Mayawati stands a chance.” The impregnability of electronic voting machines is also discussed. Abhinandan recalls the paper ballot set up. “The security was so lax, if you had a camera you could basically go anywhere...you could take the camera straight into the ballot box, the office.” Anand describes Syed Shuja’s claims as “dangerous” because “these kinds of conspiracy theories stick to people's psyche...to stage such a press conference in London is saying India is a banana republic...it does a great deal of disservice to the history of Indian elections.” Listen up! There's more. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
