The Shape of Work
#179: On designing a leadership self-reflection practice, and building a positive work culture, with Nitish Mehta

The Shape of Work

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2022 21:42

It's safe to call our guest on this episode, a tech-savant. We welcome Nitish Mehta, Co-Founder at INTEGRTR.Nitish was first introduced to the culture of work-life balance in his first job at SAP. Five years later in his career journey, he co-founded CashPositive (a fintech start-up focused on simplifying B2B credit transactions) and INTEGRTR (an enterprise-tech start-up simplifying HR-Tech integrations). Nitish aims at simplifying problems with the use of technology and is currently contributing all his tech and founding expertise to INTEGRTR. Episode highlights:How to build a positive work cultureHis thoughts on micromanagingTips on designing a leadership self-reflection practiceWorkplace lessons learned from the employees during the pandemicTips for managers to motivate and inspire their team for better performanceEpisode Highlights 1. Building the right work culture Culture is defined by the value system of founders and early team members. A positive culture automatically sets in with the right people who value the right things. Therefore, Nitish feels that companies should hire the right people for setting the right culture. 2. Thoughts and views on micromanaging According to Nitish, if there is a need for micromanagement in an organisation, there is something wrong with either the people or processes. However, the CEO must be involved in micromanagement at the hiring level, especially during the initial days of the company. 3. Creating a practice that reflects through leadership Leaders should take some time off and get into a zone where they can analyse things over time. Nitish gives an example of their annual company catchup where they look at their yearly achievements. Focusing on both the good and not-good part helps leaders strike the right balance in the organisation. For self-reflection, one must get inputs from the team and co-founders. For that, empowering the team to speak actively in meetings is important. 4. Major lessons learnt during the Covid pandemic Adaptability and resilience played an important role in the early stage of the pandemic. It is because it impacted hiring and onboarding people for remote work. In the second part, working in a remote setup with people who have never interacted and met in person was challenging, according to Nitish. It provided new learnings to the company. People helping each other in the team was pleasant, according to him. 5. Which is better: remote work or working from the office?Nitish feels that remote work can be balanced with offline meetings. INTEGRTR is spread across two continents, and therefore offline meetups play a huge role in working things out. Employees love remote work because they can balance work and personal life. However, outdoor work learning is missed due to remote work. Non-remote setup encourages engagement and bond-building. Therefore, fostering engagement while working remotely is also essential. As a leader, one must empower the employees to grow and help others grow. 6. Virtual platforms for engaging employees Nitish thinks that the video engagement platform helps employees get cues by visual apart from voice. Having an environment that fosters friendships and workplace bonding is essential, according to him. Virtual platforms are excellent tools in this regard.Follow Nitish on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast Host: Ankita Kirad

When Global Head of Engineering, Nitish Mathew looks back at his journey over the last four years with Afterpay, he describes it as a phenomenal ride and a tremendous learning journey. They have had to reinvent themselves three times in a very real way, getting rid of their first and second platform and building with the view of not assuming that this is for the next 10 years, but building with the view that they will need to get rid of this in two to three years. Nitish says when a data scientist joins a company they should be able to query a data lake or data warehouse like any library. We need to help users find information quickly so they can actually get the information that they want to do their research immediately. It needs to be organised so people know how to find what they need. We end part one with a discussion on how organisations should use coaching to get the best results. Ultimately, leadership's role is to get the right outcomes and support people with coaching, technology, decision making and resources. He believes the goal is not to build the fastest product. The goal is to make sure your data scientist colleagues are happy. And for them to be happy, you need to make sure that she or he is able to do their job fast, which involves giving proper easy to use performance tooling, giving good data, and then making sure that on a daily basis, it works. This INR 583 Cr IPO was oversubscribed 176 times by investors. Even before a 21-year-old Nitish Mittersain could find his foothold with his fledgling startup, he found himself in a $660K debt after the dot-com crash. Nazara.com v1.0 was kept aside, and Nitish resorted to selling bulk SMS packs to stay afloat. But the wheels of his fortune were turning, and by 2005, Nazara had landed a $1.5 MM seed investment and Sachin Tendulkar as its brand ambassador. The journey ahead could only be in one direction - upwards. But there several more twist and turn that Nitesh had to content with. What did Nazara do to eventually spring back again? Was it just COVID, or did the demographics have a role to play? Will it be able to compete with the new-age fantasy gaming industry and come out on top?

Despite the massive anti-incumbency that he faced in the state, Nitish Kumar took oath as the chief minister of Bihar for a historic fourth consecutive term but with two deputies from the BJP.  The saffron party that emerged out to be the big brother in the alliance with 74 seats interestingly replaced Sushil Modi who had been Kumar's deputy for more than a decade with Tarkishore Prasad and Renu Devi — who won from the Katihar and Bettiah seats respectively. According to reports, the post of Speaker in the Bihar Assembly will also be given to the BJP. And while so far 4 JDU leaders, 2 BJP leaders, and 1 leader from the HAM and the VIP each have been sworn-in to the cabinet, some reports even suggested that eventually when all appointments are made the JD(U) may get a lesser number of ministerial berths than the BJP this time owing to its "junior" position in the alliance. But what does the appointment of the two deputies say? Even though it is Nitish Kumar who continues to be at helm of the governance, is the BJP all set to solidify its grip over the state governance? Throughout the election, he says, people made their discontent clear against the Nitish Kumar government.“I was wrong when I thought that this time, the election was just about real issues. But no, this year again, it was about caste,” he adds. “Despite so many issues remaining the same in Bihar for the last 15 years, people did vote on the basis of caste.”Neeraj explains how women votes helped the NDA gain a majority in Bihar. Though people were not happy with Nitish, he says, Bihar's women voted for him because of the reforms Nitish brought in for them. “Women have Nitish's back,” he says. He also believes that after Nitish's tenure, Bihar has good youth leaders, ready to step in.All this and a lot more as they talk about what made news this week, what didn't, and what shouldn't have. Anand doesn’t think the turnout of 54.26 percent is “significantly higher” than the past but it’s good enough, given the apprehension that the pandemic would discourage voting. “Far from discouraging voters, it encouraged more to come out,” he says.Talking about Tejashwi Yadav’s electoral campaign, Anand says, “He recognises that the argument of Nitish’s government being corrupt...will not cut any ice after some time. So, he’s trying to infuse political freshness by showing himself as the face of development.” (Note: Abhinandan accidentally refers to Tejashwi Yadav as Tejasvi Surya.)In the context of a student being killed outside her college in Faridabad, Abhinandan brings up the kind of news that makes headlines. He says that since this crime was caught on camera, it led to it going viral on social media. Jayashree comments on the “love jihad” angle, saying: “Whenever a Muslim is involved in a crime, it turns communal...The right-wing ecosystem seizes the opportunity...It also appeals to the Islamophobia in the country, as the villain is a Muslim.”Moving on to developments in France after a schoolteacher was beheaded, Manisha says there are many nuances to what happened. While Abhinandan points out that criticising Islam is not Islamophobia, Manisha explains the power imbalance between the Muslim population and the white population in France. “In a racially divided society like France, the (Arab) population is already alienated and will feel more alienated.” On the other hand, she adds, there’s a long history of satire in France that also needs to be taken into account. It's a massive election in Bihar right now - that will have far reaching national implications. Will Bihar swing the other way and give RJD's Tejashwi Yadav a chance or will the calculations of the survivor - Nitish Kumar again prove right - ONCE AGAIN!! Also what role will smaller and newer parties - like Pushpam Priya Chaudhary's Plurals play in the hustings?? While the track record of Nitish is far from satisfactory - he has banking on the fact that the state will not want to go back to team RJD. Also often unseen is the solid support that Nitish still enjoys from the women voters of Bihar and smaller communities of the state. Finally the question is - will the young voter of Bihar move away from cast based voting - or follow the pattern set since the 90's .... or will the young vote at all???!!

As you age, you gradually lose the ability to refocus your eyes -- a phenomenon as old as humanity itself -- leading to a reliance on bifocals, contacts and procedures like LASIK surgery. Electrical engineer Nitish Padmanaban offers a glimpse of cutting-edge tech that's truly a sight for sore eyes: dynamic, autofocusing lenses that track your sight and adjust to what you see, both near and far.

HrishiKay chats with him on his #CeosWorkingFromHome series about their own proprietary Engaged Learning Online (ELO) technology. #ELO is a high-end online learning system that replicates a live classroom down to its last detail. The ELO studio Nitish tells Hrishi, is set up with a robotic tracking camera for the faculty. This allows them to move freely, maintain eye contact with students, respond to their visual cues, moderate discussions and more, all in real-time. The K Man is always concerned about individual attention for students in a virtual world. Nitish explains to him that faculty & students are able to engage in one-on-one conversations as if they were sitting side-by-side & that ELO enables faculty to evaluate each student's level of engagement, respond to them individually and keep them motivated – just like they would do in a conventional classroom “The HrishiKay Sessions” are produced & presented by Hrishikesh Kannan popularly known as HrishiKay. According to Nitish Padmanaban, the problem in vision is deceivingly simple: as a person ages, the lenses in their eyes stiffen and become unable to change shape enough to focus on different objects in their environment. As a result, a person might get reading or bifocal lenses to help them see what they need to. As a fifth-year Ph.D. student at Stanford University, Padmanaban is working on a unique solution to this problem, which is a focused, tunable lens that replaces the functionality that's lost by the eyes over time.  These autofocus function as a combination of two types of eye-tracking software and a depth camera, and are able to determine exactly which object a person is looking at, how far from the person the object is located, and change shape accordingly so that the person can seamlessly focus on anything in their line of vision.  In today's episode, Padmanaban discusses the technical details of how the product works, how the technology of the lenses is based upon the technology behind virtual reality headsets, what they're aiming to improve about the product in the future, and more. The NDA in Bihar faced anti-incumbency at both the State and Union levels when it went to the polls in 2019. Its stunning performance in the elections, improving on its performance from 2014 suggests that the alliance was able to in fact benefit from pro-incumbency in favour of Narendra Modi and possibly, Nitish Kumar. Just how was this achieved and what happened to Bihar's famed caste calculus? We are joined by Parth MN, a freelance journalist who covered the State of Bihar (among other "Hindi belt" states) extensively before the elections, to talk about why Bihar voted the way it did. “Dinosaurs became extinct because they refused to change with the times. And that’s what has happened to the Communist Party of India (CPI) in (Bihar’s) Jehanabad and Nalanda. They (CPI) were ruling these districts in the 1980s and early 1990s but were dogmatic and refused to accept new social realities,” says comrade Ambika, the district secretary of Jehanabad’s CPI. Another comrade adds, “If Begusarai is Leningrad, then by that logic, Jehanabad is Moscow”. In a manner of speaking, they are right. Unlike Begusarai, where the CPI only won the seat once in 1967, Jehanabad elected a CPI candidate, Ramashray Prasad Singh, four times in a row (1984, 1989, 1991 and 1996). In neighbouring Nalanda constituency, the CPI won thrice (1980, 1984 and 1991). For more podcasts from The Quint, check out our [Podcasts](https://www.thequint.com/news/podcast) section.

In last week’s episode of PayTechTalk, Nitish Kannan, CEO and co-founder of Circle Plus Payments, told us about his vision to empower the next 7 billion people to be part of the mobile payments revolution and to build a cashless economy. In this week’s episode, Nitish gives us exclusive insides into his idea to disrupt the financing of Hollywood movies and his vision to enable everyone to become a real Hollywood producer. ICO goes to Hollywood For Nitish, the idea of an ICO for movies is – and I quote – “a perfect fit”, since it allows anyone around the world to be a part of the stuff they really like: movies. He believes that crowdfunding for financing movies with cryptocurrencies is an interesting use case for ICOs. The traditional way to finance a movie is to ask banks or other investors and sell your ideas. Naturally, the investors want to have a say in how your film is going to be made. At the end of the day, this way of producing a movie is compromising the original artistic vision of the movie, Nitish says. He believes that on the other hand there are so many fans out there that would love to be part of many interesting projects, but cannot afford to finance an entire film project on their own. According to Nitish, this new project marks a whole new way to produce movies since it allows anybody of the 3 billion people in the world with smart devices (and a wallet) to invest and participate with their own means. Want to hear more about Nitish’s vision? Sit back, relax and enjoy PayTechTalk 20!
