This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha SharmaToday is the 14th of March and here are the headlines. In a major development this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritius PM Navin Chandra Ramgoolam announced an "enhanced strategic partnership" between the two nations. India also pledged new projects worth 500 million Mauritian rupees (around Rs 100 crore), including building Mauritius' new Parliament. Both nations agreed to conduct mutual trade in local currencies. Modi also outlined a vision for the Global South under the MAHASAGAR initiative, which focuses on mutual growth and security across regions, strengthening India-Mauritius ties in both trade and diplomacy. In news from the Parliament , Opposition parties, including Congress and DMK, staged a protest in the Lok Sabha against a renewable energy project near the India-Pakistan border. Congress leader Manish Tewari raised concerns about national and energy security, arguing the project's proximity to the border violates security protocols. According to Tewari, major infrastructure should be at least 10 km away from the border. Meanwhile, the Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025 was introduced, aimed at modernizing India's immigration laws. Opposition parties called it unconstitutional and demanded its referral to a Joint Parliamentary Committee. In global headlines, separatist militants attacked the Jaffar Express, a passenger train in Pakistan's Balochistan province, carrying 500 people. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for derailing the train, asserting that they had seized control, killed 50 security personnel, and taken 214 passengers as hostages, including active-duty personnel. However, their claims have not been independently verified. Meanwhile, Pakistani army confirmed the end of the rescue operation, stating that 33 militants and 21 hostages were killed, while over 300 passengers were rescued. Ukraine has proposed a 30-day ceasefire in its war with Russia, contingent on Moscow's agreement. The announcement came after high-level talks in Saudi Arabia, where the United States declared it would lift its freeze on military aid to Ukraine. This marks a significant shift in efforts to pause the devastating conflict, which began in 2022 with Russia's full-scale invasion. According to a joint statement from the White House and Kyiv, the temporary ceasefire could be extended if both sides agree to further terms.Delhi remains the world's most polluted capital for the sixth consecutive year, with an average PM 2.5 concentration of 91.8 μg/m3, according to the 2024 World Air Quality Report. The report reveals that 13 of the 20 most polluted cities globally are in India, including Byrnihat and Faridabad. India ranks as the fifth most polluted country, with a concerning average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 50.6 μg/m3. This is ten times higher than the World Health Organization's annual PM2.5 guideline, highlighting India's ongoing air quality crisis. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by the Indian Express.

This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. Today is the 11th of March and here are the headlines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora upon his arrival in Mauritius on Tuesday. Women performed the traditional Bihari cultural dance, Geet Gawai, to honor him. He was greeted by Mauritian PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who presented him with a garland at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Modi is in Mauritius for a two-day visit as the chief guest at the National Day celebrations. His trip includes inaugurating 20 India-funded projects, ranging from capacity building to community-linked infrastructure. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha resumed today at 11 am, with discussions centered around new bills and the Manipur budget. The Lok Sabha is set to discuss President's Rule in Manipur and hear the presentation of the Manipur budget by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. A new bill on immigration services was also introduced, sparking opposition debate. Congress leader Manish Tewari called the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, unconstitutional, while the government defended its legislative competence to introduce the bill under the Union list.Delhi remains the world's most polluted capital for the sixth consecutive year, with an average PM 2.5 concentration of 91.8 μg/m3, according to the 2024 World Air Quality Report. The report reveals that 13 of the 20 most polluted cities globally are in India, including Byrnihat and Faridabad. India ranks as the fifth most polluted country, with a concerning average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 50.6 μg/m3. This is ten times higher than the World Health Organization's annual PM2.5 guideline, highlighting India's ongoing air quality crisis.Gangster Aman Sahu was killed in an encounter on Tuesday morning in Jharkhand's Palamu district. Authorities said Sahu's gang attempted to free him while he was being transported from Raipur jail to Ranchi. Sahu was involved in over 100 criminal cases, including murder and extortion. Police also suspected ties to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. His death follows several convictions in criminal cases. The encounter occurred after an attempt to break him free from police custody during his transfer. Shares on Wall Street plunged on Monday, marking one of the worst trading days since 2022, fueled by concerns about President Donald Trump's trade policies. Investors are worried that a trade war could push the US economy into a recession, with Trump expressing ambivalence about the prospect. Despite earlier responses to market movements, Trump now hints at economic pain in the short term. The tech-heavy NASDAQ dropped over 4%, with Tesla suffering the most, falling more than 10%, marking a sharp decline from its December peak. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by the Indian Express.

‘The cow vigilantes in Faridabad, who now express regret over killing a Brahmin reveal a troubling double standard—sorrow seems to hinge on the victim's identity. Their statements make it sound as though the loss would have been more acceptable if the victim had been a Muslim. This perverse reasoning reveals a great deal about the mentality that is at work, which values some lives more than others. This murder is a chilling reminder that violence, once justified in the name of a cause, can easily spread its net to ensnare anyone in its path,' says Amana Begam Ansari in her column.----more----https://theprint.in/opinion/cow-vigilante-blasphemy-murders-are-two-sides-of-the-same-coin-we-need-policing-reform-now/2254837/

This line stayed with me because it asked for something more. Here is the something more: “I will never know how you see red and you will never know how I see it.” And yet, and yet we know enough, we know enough the color red to say: "I see it, too. I see it with you.”  Perhaps ‘seeing with' is the best we can hope for.Question: How might we see with another's eyes? You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!

Booster dose of Covid-vaccine

Business Standard Podcast

Most of us got our second and last jab months ago. Experts say that the immunity offered by Covid-19 vaccines wanes with the passage of time. So, as the third wave is threatening to take the world into its grip again, nations are mulling administering a third dose to its vulnerable population. And India, which on Tuesday logged 1.68 lakh new Covid-19 cases and 277 deaths, has started vaccinating its population which is above 60 years of age and have comorbidities. The booster shot is no different from the earlier doses which we had. It elicits an immune response from our body leading to production of antibodies, which in turn help the body fight the virus. Meanwhile, there is no consensus on whether the booster shot should be different from the earlier two jabs that one had. Citing several experts, DownToEarth magazine recently said in an article that there is no peer-reviewed study in India on the efficacy of mixing vaccines. In July last year, The World Health Organization's chief scientist had asked individuals against mixing and matching Covid-19 vaccines. He said that such decisions should be left to public health authorities. On the other hand, pointing to a study in the UK, BBC had last year said that a mix-and-match approach “appears to give good protection against the pandemic virus”. Some other studies have suggested that mixing-and-matching offers an even better immune response than using the third dose of the same series.  Back home, the Indian government is staying away from mix-and-match policy for the booster dose for now. For those fully vaccinated with Covishield, protection against fresh infection is just 3%. Protection against serious disease caused by Omicron is 18%, and against death 29%. Now, with a booster dose, this will increase to 80% protection against serious disease, and 88% against death. Medical experts have also suggested that the government should reduce the gap between two doses of vaccines from the present 84 days or 12-16 weeks. This would ensure speedier full vaccination of the entire eligible adult population. The Centre has, though, said that the interval between the second and third doses will be nine months.  The decision to keep the interval between the second and third doses at nine months has been based on the findings of five scientific studies carried out by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), Faridabad.  The third shot will for sure offer some shield to the elderly and the frontline workers from this ongoing wave of pandemic, even if it is from the same series. This week on Naatak Radio, presenting Rashid Jahan's Dilli Ki Sair.  A forerunner among a cohort of young, female, Urdu short story writers in the 1930s and 40s, Rashid Jahan - doctor and a political activist, is credited with freeing the tongues and pens of several generations of writers that followed, including the great Ismat Chugtai who considers Rashid Jahan as a literary mentor.  “She spoilt me because she was very bold and used to speak all sorts of things openly and loudly, and I just wanted to copy her,” Chughtai would later write.Dilli Ki Sair is one Rashid Jahan's most famous short stories. It is the story of the incidents that happened with a woman who came from Faridabad to Delhi for a trip with her husband. When she goes back to Faridabad, she narrates them to her friends, and the incidents are so interesting that she's asked to narrate them every time her friends gather at their house. Performed by: Namita ChaubalSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/naatak)

Touqeer Butt of Unity 101 in conversation with Richa Sharma. Richa Sharma (born 29 August 1974) is an Indian film playback singer as well a devotional singer. In 2006, she sang Bollywood's longest track, the bidaai song, in film Baabul (2006). Under the tutelage of Pandit Aaskaran Sharma, Richa went on to get proper training in Indian classical and light music. Richa added ghazals; film songs, Punjabi and Rajasthani folk songs to her repertoire, thus making her voice reach out to more and more people in a variety of sounds. While music was at its peak in Richa's life, academic education had to be sacrificed and without any backing with a dream to make it big in the music world, Richa landed in Mumbai in 1994. She sang cover versions and bhajans to ensure she had her bread and butter and simultaneously continued her struggle in Bollywood. She made her debut in Bollywood with Sawan Kumar's Salma Pe Dil Aa Gaya in 1996 and followed it up by a number of films until the big hit came by in the form of Taal where she sang for A.R. Rahman.Thereafter a spate of hits followed, Zubeidaa, Saathiya (A.R. Rahman); Hera Pheri (Anu Malik); Khakee (Ram Sampath); Tarkeeb (the song "Duppatte Ka Palu"), Baghban (Title Song for Aadesh Shrivastava); Soch (the song "Nikal Chali Be" for Jatin-Lalit); Rudraksh, Kal Ho Naa Ho (Sad version of the title track for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy); Gangajal (Sandesh Shandilya); Popcorn Khao Mast Ho Jao (Vishal-Shekhar), Saawariya (Monty Sharma), and Om Shanti Om (Vishal-Shekhar) and the most popular song for Kaante ("Mahi Ve" for Anand Raaj Anand). The versatile playback singer has also done quite a few albums to showcase her talent. Albums like Ni Main Yaar Nu Sajda Kardi, Piya and Winds of Rajasthan (for Times Music released early 2004) have brought out the class and grace in Richa's voice and her versatility as a singer. In March 2011, Richa Sharma and her family inaugurated the Saibaba Temple in Faridabad, Haryana and launched her first Saibaba devotional album Sai Ki Tasveer released by SaReGaMa India...

They have demanded for the three new farm laws to be scrapped and MSP be legalised. But before the farmers were let in, barricades, barbed wires, water cannon and tear gas shells were used to deter them from entering the capital. Anand doesn’t think the turnout of 54.26 percent is “significantly higher” than the past but it’s good enough, given the apprehension that the pandemic would discourage voting. “Far from discouraging voters, it encouraged more to come out,” he says.Talking about Tejashwi Yadav’s electoral campaign, Anand says, “He recognises that the argument of Nitish’s government being corrupt...will not cut any ice after some time. So, he’s trying to infuse political freshness by showing himself as the face of development.” (Note: Abhinandan accidentally refers to Tejashwi Yadav as Tejasvi Surya.)In the context of a student being killed outside her college in Faridabad, Abhinandan brings up the kind of news that makes headlines. He says that since this crime was caught on camera, it led to it going viral on social media. Jayashree comments on the “love jihad” angle, saying: “Whenever a Muslim is involved in a crime, it turns communal...The right-wing ecosystem seizes the opportunity...It also appeals to the Islamophobia in the country, as the villain is a Muslim.”Moving on to developments in France after a schoolteacher was beheaded, Manisha says there are many nuances to what happened. While Abhinandan points out that criticising Islam is not Islamophobia, Manisha explains the power imbalance between the Muslim population and the white population in France. “In a racially divided society like France, the (Arab) population is already alienated and will feel more alienated.” On the other hand, she adds, there’s a long history of satire in France that also needs to be taken into account. The panel also discusses the 2+2 India-US meet, Pope Francis on same-sex civil unions, and a lot more. We segue into an entertaining discussion about Arnav's own career as a Kuwaiti cricketer on the international stage, before exchanging notes on how we have "played the scoop" (metaphorically, at least) in our own lives. There seems to be no end to the woes of people residing in Delhi and other parts of north India. On Monday morning, Delhi air quality was in 'severe-plus emergency' category. SAFAR, the government-run air quality monitoring and weather forecasting agency, said Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) was 708 at 6:30 am, which is 14 times the safe level of 0-50.. Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad also saw their air quality in the severe-plus emergency overall category. NASA satellite imagery showed vast swathes of the northern plains, covering Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, blanketed under a smoky haze. Weather experts said any significant improvement in the situation is highly unlikely unless there is rainfall, which may occur on November 7 and 8 To tackle this, the odd-even scheme kick started today, with only even-numbered non-transport vehicles allowed on Delhi roads on the first day of the exercise. The impact of the scheme remains to be seen. The third edition of odd-even scheme will run till November 15.  Listen to the podcast to know the list of exemptions, penalty, important rules and how prepared is the Delhi government for the Odd-Even Scheme 2019
