MARKET SHOCK: MONDAY MELTDOWN, BUT A POSSIBLE REBOUND India's stock markets suffered their worst single-day fall in 10 months, with the Sensex plunging nearly 3%—opening 4,000 points lower—after Donald Trump's tariff threats sent global investors into panic mode. Midcap and smallcap indices dropped even more, down 3.5% and 3.8%. Despite the turmoil, experts say this isn't an India-specific issue. “Today's correction is more global panic than India-specific,” noted Finavenue's Abhishek Jaiswal. Historically, such sharp corrections are often followed by strong rebounds. Meanwhile, the rupee stayed largely stable, slipping only 0.47%, and India's markets are still outperforming peers like Japan, Hong Kong, and the US. UP POLITICIAN ARRESTED IN MASSIVE ₹750 CR BANK FRAUD Vinay Shankar Tiwari, son of late UP strongman Hari Shankar Tiwari, was arrested in a ₹750 crore bank fraud case. The ED claims he diverted funds from a ₹1,129 crore loan taken by Gangotri Enterprises, where he was a promoter. After ignoring multiple summons, Tiwari was picked up from Lucknow following raids across five cities. Over ₹100 crore in assets have been seized. The case stems from a CBI FIR filed after complaints from the Bank of India-led lending consortium. Tiwari, once elected on a BSP ticket and later with the Samajwadi Party, is now at the heart of one of UP's largest banking scandals. TRUMP TARIFFS COULD SHRINK INDIA'S US EXPORTS BY $5.76 BILLION India's booming exports to the US face a serious threat under Donald Trump's revived “America First” agenda. According to the Global Trade Research Initiative, new tariffs could slash India's exports by over 6% in 2025. High-impact sectors include gems and jewellery, electronics, auto parts, and seafood. Of the $89.8 billion India exported to the US last year, $67.2 billion will now face a steep 26% duty—up from lower MFN rates. While some industries may benefit from Chinese penalties, many others face steep losses. India's government is maintaining a cautious stance, avoiding retaliatory tariffs for now. LPG PRICES UP ₹50; PETROL, DIESEL EXCISE HIKED Households will pay more for cooking gas starting Tuesday, April 8, with LPG cylinder prices hiked by ₹50. Under the Ujjwala scheme, subsidized cylinders will now cost ₹550; others will pay ₹853. The government also raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre but clarified that pump prices will remain unchanged for now, thanks to falling global crude prices. “The price hike will be reviewed,” said Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, noting the move will help recover ₹43,000 crore in losses incurred by oil companies due to previous subsidies. PRESTIGE HOSPITALITY GEARS UP FOR ₹2,500 CR IPO Prestige Hospitality Ventures, a subsidiary of real estate major Prestige Group, is preparing to go public to raise ₹2,000–2,500 crore. The company is expected to file its draft IPO papers with SEBI in the next two weeks. The funds will be used to expand its hotel portfolio and reduce debt. The firm currently operates eight hotels (1,477 keys) and has 15 more in the pipeline, including high-end properties in Delhi Aerocity, Mumbai, Goa, and more. With travel demand rising and partnerships like Marriott in place, the IPO aims to tap into India's fast-growing hospitality market. Prestige joins a wave of hotel IPOs including Samhi Hotels, Juniper Hotels, and Ventive Hospitality, as the sector rides a post-pandemic growth wave.

This week on Hafta, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Raman Kirpal, and Anand Vardhan are joined by Dr Sumeet Mhaskar, professor of sociology at Jindal School of Government and Public Policy, and Ajoy Bose, veteran journalist and author of Behenji: The Rise and Fall of Mayawati. The panel first discusses the controversy triggered by Samajwadi Party legislator Abu Azmi's remarks on Aurangzeb while addressing the Mughal emperor's portrayal in the film Chhava.Sumeet provides historical context to the interpretation of Aurangzeb and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's legacies in Maharashtra. Explaining how they are shaped by competing narratives, he says: “Much more communalised interpretation is projected through movies, history textbooks, and plays”. The return of Aurangzeb to headlines shows that we are using the present to judge the past, rather than letting history inform our present, he notes.Commenting on Aurangzeb's legacy, Manisha adds, “When you look at the Mughals, I would say Aurangzeb was the worst of them...He's an odd hill to die on, especially for current politicians.”The panel then analyses the “political decline” of Mayawati, and her decision to suspend nephew Akash Anand from the Bahujan Samaj Party.Ajoy terms the suspension as a “significant moment”. Commenting on Mayawati's “disruptive” thinking, he says: “If Kanshiram was the strategic genius who thought of using Dalits to become a political force, Mayawati was the person who delivered”. On where things went wrong for Mayawati, he remarks, “She got quite distracted by her prime ministerial dream being thrashed and made fundamental mistakes in handling the social alliance which brought her to power.”As Abhinandan and Sumeet point to BSP's cadre being the strength of the party, Anand underlines Mayawati's “lack of political agility” as one of the reasons for BSP's decline. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a major setback as it fell short of a majority – with 240 seats – on its own as it was heavily dependent on alliance partners such as the TDP and JD(U) to secure 272 seats required to form the government. The Opposition INDIA bloc combined by the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won a total of 232 seats. The Congress got back on its feet with 99 seats and the SP gave a stunning show by winning 37 seats from a mere 5 seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2019. The TMC won 29 seats in West Bengal while the DMK had leads in 22 seats. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP won 7 seats and the Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray secured 9 seats. In Bihar, the RJD was ahead in 4 constituencies and the AAP and JMM in 3.In Odisha, the BJP is all set to form a majority government of its own for the first time, winning 78 out of 147 seats in the assembly elections of the coastal state. The outcome brings to an end the five-term reign of Naveen Patnaik's BJD, which managed to retain only 51 seats this time. Patnaik was eyeing to become the longest serving Chief Minister in India, but fell short by 76 days.Actor Kangana Ranaut, who recently won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket, was allegedly slapped by a woman constable of the CISF at the security area of Chandigarh airport. Afterwards, the CISF constable, Kulwinder Kaur, suggested her actions were linked to a statement Ranaut had made about women joining the farmers' protest. The CISF suspended the constable, initiated departmental inquiry, and lodged a police complaint against her. Ranaut, who was taking a Vistara flight to New Delhi and was accompanied by members of her family, said she will file a complaint with the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, which congratulated Narendra Modi, the BJP and NDA on their election victory, has protested the exchange of messages between Taiwan President Lai Ching-te and Modi on the poll outcome. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, responding to a question on the interaction between Modi and Lai, said there is no such thing as ‘president' of the Taiwan region and that China opposes all forms of official interactions between the Taiwan authorities and countries having diplomatic relations with China. She further stated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China.  This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Coalition politics is back as Modi looks at a third straight term

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, June 5, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started: The people have spoken. Results of the 2024 General Election are here, and the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance is set to form the government at the Centre. This time, however, no single party got an absolute majority. Far from the centre's seat of power in Delhi, Dalal Street in Mumbai saw a milestone day. The last two days have been a rollercoaster ride for the Indian markets. The markets, which were soaring a day before results - on the back of a strong comeback predicted for the BJP by pollsters - saw a day of bloodbath on Tuesday. Investors lost more than ₹31 trillion on Tuesday as benchmark indices plunged. Both Nifty and Sensex saw a fall of close to 6 per cent - the biggest since the first pandemic-induced lockdown was announced on March 23 2020. Mint's markets correspondent Ram Sahgal reports on the biggest market crash in four years. Coalition politics is back. A decade after the BJP won a majority on its own for the first time, NDA - the coalition led by it, is seeing a comeback to power. Narendra Modi is set to become the Prime Minister for a third straight term. While the NDA's tally of about 290 is nowhere close to the government's call for “400 paar”, the coalition made a dent in key southern states. The BJP finally breached Kerala, winning one seat in the state. In Tamil Nadu, the BJP failed to open its account but saw its vote share rise to 11% from earlier 3.7%. The opposition INDIA bloc is likely to secure 234 seats led by the Indian National Congress, which has nearly doubled its strength in Parliament to 99 seats. The crown jewel of the BJP's electoral victories in the past - Uttar Pradesh - favoured the opposition alliance over the BJP. The Congress and the Samajwadi Party-led INDIA bloc outnumbered the NDA by 43 to 33. Modi's BJP also broke into new territories in the east - notably Odisha, where it not only swept the Lok Sabha election but also closed in on a majority in the state assembly. The results also imply that Modi will now have to rely on his allies - mainly TDP's Chandrababu Naidu and JDU's Nitish Kumar - for a stable government at the centre. Mint's Sayantan Bera and N Madhavan report on the results of the world's largest election. N Madhavan also explains the verdict of 2024 in today's Mint Primer. From a setback for the BJP in the heartland states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, to the return of regional parties, the 2024 verdict was full of surprises. Despite holding 206 public meetings and rallies over the course of the last 45 days, it became evident that Modi's magic too has its limits. The Lok Sabha will also boast of a stronger Opposition - something that was missing for a decade. Another insight from the verdict is how inaccurate exit polls can be. Most of the pollsters missed the mark massively this election. As the BJP-led NDA appears set to continue its tenure with a reduced majority, industries across India are looking forward to policy stability and the extension of current incentives. The technology sector is particularly focused on advancing India's semiconductor capabilities, enhancing AI regulation, and implementing crucial digital laws such as the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and the upcoming Digital India Bill. Meanwhile, the telecom sector anticipates the enactment of new rules under the forthcoming telecom bill, along with potential tariff revisions. The aviation industry hopes for the establishment of global aviation hubs, and a reduction in jet fuel taxes to improve operational economics. There's also a significant focus on incentives for electric vehicles and regulations affecting fuel economy and emissions, which are crucial for the road transport sector. Gulveen Aulakh takes a look at the expectations of major industrial sectors from the upcoming government at the centre. Yesterday's results had one outstanding result: that the BJP would not be able to form a government on its own. We invited Surjit Bhalla, economist and author, to opine on this historic result. Bhalla writes that no exit poll got this election right — especially the rise of the INDIA coalition. UP, West Bengal, and Maharashtra stood out for the new age coalition group. Bhalla also writes that the lower turnout could have hampered the NDA's chances at a greater majority. Lastly, he writes that this election is a victory for many stakeholders, but none bigger than the one for the average Indian voter, who has made their voice resonant.  We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Stating that INDIA alliance will come back with strong numbers and defeat the BJP, Kharge added that it's not the Opposition but the people who want change. The court made the observation in its order confirming the interim bail granted to the couple. The two were arrested on 23rd of December 2022 in connection with alleged irregularities in loans provided by the bank to the Venugopal Dhoot-led Videocon Group. The Supreme Court today stayed further proceedings on a notice issued by the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee to West Bengal officials, to appear on a complaint by BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar over alleged "misconduct, brutality and life-threatening injuries" to him. Majumdar had complained to the parliamentary committee about a breach of privilege as an MP after he was allegedly injured last week during protests in Sandeshkhali where leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress have been accused of sexually assaulting women villagers.Following a closed-door meeting between former Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath and his supporters, his loyalists have claimed Nath would stay with the Congress. After emerging from the meeting today, former state home minister Bala Bachan said, quote, "There was no question of (Nath) joining the BJP. Kamal Nath is a national level politician of the Congress and has given his entire life to the party." Sources in the ED said, quote, "The court has taken cognisance of the same, thereby the court has prima facie accepted that Kejriwal has done an offence for which he is liable to be prosecuted. The question in front of the court is not about the validity of the summons rather the illegal act on part of Kejriwal of intentionally disobeying three summons." The government introduced the Women's Reservation Bill, proposing a 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and assemblies of states and Union territories. In this podcast, businessline's Political Editor and Chief of Bureau, Delhi, Poornima Joshi, discusses the history of the bill, political reactions, and more. This historic moment comes after a 27-year journey that began in 1996 during the United Front government's tenure. However, the bill faced opposition from constituent parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and Janata Dal United, leading to its inability to pass as it required a constitutional amendment. In subsequent attempts during the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee between 1998 and 2004, the bill faced similar obstacles, with parties like the RJD and Samajwadi Party blocking its introduction. Despite strong support from leaders like Sushma Swaraj, the bill couldn't progress due to the lack of a majority and the power of states. The UPA government, led by the Congress, finally introduced the bill in 2008, succeeding in passing it in the Rajya Sabha. This move kept the bill alive despite not passing in the Lok Sabha. Over time, the Congress urged the Modi government to reintroduce and pass the bill. Now, on the eve of the elections, the bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha, where the BJP has a majority, and the Congress supports it. However, there are still issues with the bill. One provision states that it will come into effect, but the podcast ends before discussing the specifics of this provision. The bill represents a significant step toward gender equality in Indian politics and has garnered widespread support from women, making it a popular appeal for the government. The mafia-style execution of former legislator Atiq Ahmed and his brother, Khalid Azim, by three assailants on the night of April 15 in Prayagraj, while speaking to reporters on camera has again turned the spotlight on the absence of the rule of law in Uttar Pradesh. Two days earlier, on the 13th of April, Atiq's son, Asad Ahmed, was killed in an alleged encounter with the police in Jhansi. The killings come days after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told the State Assembly that he would smash the mafia in his state to the ground. In March this year, Atiq Ahmed wrote to the Supreme Court that he might be killed in a fake encounter with the U.P. police. His fears were proven correct. Both Atiq and Asad were accused in the murder of a political rival in February. Atiq, a former leader of the Samajwadi Party and the Apna Dal, had more than 100 criminal cases against him. More than 180 alleged criminals have been shot dead in so-called police encounters in the last six years that Adityanath has been the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. So, what does the sensational execution of Atiq and his brother tell us about the state of law and order in Uttar Pradesh? Can the rule of law be restored in a state where the police has been seen as aggressive and high-handed?

The BJP's victories in State Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand are both comprehensive and complete. Its dominance over north India's most populous and politically significant State has been re-emphasised. The Samajwadi Party fought the good fight but it was no match for the BJP. The Bahujan Samaj Party cut a sorry figure. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party, a relatively fresh face in the State's politics, won four-fifths of the seats – making it the second state after Delhi where AAP now has a government. Whether the party is able to advance beyond these two States is a question being posed by analysts and ordinary people alike. In Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand, the BJP managed to buck anti-incumbency and return to power, cutting the Congress to size once again. We discuss the causes and effects of these results in this episode. Guest: Gilles Verniers teaches politics at Ashoka University and is Co-Director of the Trivedi Centre for Political Data. The election euphoria swept the markets yesterday as Bharatiya Janata Party clinched victory in three of the five states. The S&P BSE Sensex sprinted 1,595 points intra-day while the Nifty climbed over 400 points.   The BJP strode ahead of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh while the Aam Aadmi Party cornered a landslide win in Punjab. The BJP also reigned in Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, the other three states for which elections were held last month.   Though the election results were for assembly polls, this assumed significance as these are seen as a pointer to general elections, which are two years away. “State polls are touted as semi-final, before 2024 general elections have some impact on the direction of economic reforms and visibility of Modi-led government beyond 2024. Given that it included UP and a state from the Northeast, makes it very important,” says Amnish Aggarwal, Head of Research, Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd. The mandate, analysts say, is a good omen for investors from a medium-term perspective as majority states have shown their overwhelming acceptance to work done by the ruling party. Another interesting sub-trend is the emergence of a new creditable alternative to the existing parties on the national stage with pro-populist policies around management efficiency.   Both philosophies, analysts say, will lead to focus on efficient governance, which is a good long-term indicator for investments in India. Devarsh Vakil of HDFC Securities, meanwhile, says the election euphoria may not last for long as potential macro shocks weigh on sentiment. The market's fag-end trade yesterday confirmed Vakil's fears. The benchmark indices failed to hold on to their gains as global cues remained fluid. The BSE Sensex slipped nearly 800 points from the day's high to end at 55,464. The Nifty50, too, cooled off around 160 points from intra-day high to end at 16,595.   Given the global headwinds including simmering Russia-Ukraine tension and swinging commodity prices, analysts suggest investors exercise caution. Aishvarya Dadheech of Ambit Asset Management says, “Investors need to be vigilant because the uncertainty of geopolitical standoff still looms large. Commodity prices are least likely to see a secular downturn even after war subsides because sanctions will continue to disrupt the global supply chain. Unless sanctions are withdrawn, the global markets can remain volatile in the coming months and India will not remain insulated.” On Friday, global cues, including commodity prices, Ukraine war, European Central Bank's interest rate decision and inflation and jobs data for the US will continue to sway indices.  Twitter: @Pun_ditry  Watch video

Apart from teaching, Prof. Verniers researches Indian political processes, identity politics and the intersections between gender and politics in India.Sidharth and Prof. Verniers talk about the Professor's observations from his years of researches into politics in UP, especially in the months running upto elections, and tons more.
