Over the last decade, election campaigns in India have undergone a dramatic shift. Political parties increasingly rely on political consulting firms, tech-savvy volunteers, pollsters, data-driven insights, and online battles to mobilize voters. But what exactly is driving these changes in the landscape of electioneering? The Backstage of Democracy: India's Election Campaigns and the People Who Manage Them is a new book by the scholar Amogh Dhar Sharma which tries to locate answers to this question. The book takes readers behind the scenes, where they are introduced to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell workers, campaign consultants, data strategists and backroom politicians.Amogh is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. His research explores the interface between politics and technology, political communication, and histories of science and technology.Amogh joins Milan on the show this week to discuss the professionalization of politics in India, how the middle class relates to politics, and the BJP's unexpected embrace of digital technology. Plus, the two discuss enigmatic backroom strategist Prashant Kishor and the rise of political consultants.Episode notes:1. From being a fringe political party in 2013 to sweeping nearly half of the state s forty-two Lok Sabha seats in 2019, the BJP has gained ground in West Bengal, aided partly by the RSS s exponential growth during Mamata Banerjee's chief ministerial tenure (2011 onwards). With a consistent and concerted criticism of the TMC, the saffron camp managed to create a strong wave of anti-incumbency. So much so that the BJP s prospects of forming the next government in Bengal in 2021 seemed to have brightened considerably, while the Left, which had ruled Bengal for over three decades, appears to have been reduced to a fringe political entity. However, the controversy over the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens, combined with Banerjee s course-correction drive, designed by strategist Prashant Kishor, indicate that she might yet script a turnaround, with Bengal turning into the laboratory of a unique political experiment. Mission Bengal: A Saffron Experiment (HarperCollins India, 2020) documents the BJP s extraordinary rise in the state and attempts to look at these developments in the historical context of Bengal from the rise of Hindu nationalism and Muslim separatism in the nineteenth century, the Partition and its fallout, the impact of developments in Bangladesh, the influence of leftist ideals on the psyche of the Bengali people, to the demographic changes in the state over the past few decades. Prashant Kishor on BJP prospects after Modi, Congress' future post 2024, JanSuraaj & Bihar politics
To revive the Congress, poll strategist Prashant Kishor had suggested a '4M' formula — Message, Messenger, Machinery and Mechanics. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge hasn't taken this advice but his first year as Congress President has been marked by significant progress in all four areas. ThePrint's Political Editor DK Singh looks at how in this episode of #PoliticallyCorrect.
Easy for intellectuals to laugh at Modi's nationalist claims. But it is silly to dismiss them. Because the truth is that this strategy is working.
As Bharat Jodo Yatra concludes, ThePrint Editor-In-Chief lists the 10 ‘good' takeaways for Rahul Gandhi & Congress from the Yatra. We also look at the formidable challenges that lie on way to electoral success as evident in data on PM Modi's popularity as shown in the latest India Today Mood of the Nation (MOTN) poll. The Indian election campaign has undergone a process of "professionalization" in recent years, as evidenced by the increasing role of professional campaign managers, public relations specialists and political advisory firms in electoral politics.Prashant Kishor, the so-called “master strategist” behind the BJP's victory in the 2014 parliamentary elections, and his organizations (CAG & IPAC) are paradigmatic examples of this “professionalization of politics”. What explains the meteoric rise of political advisers in India? Tune in to find out! Credits : Archita Jain and Abhijai Chaturvedi
The irony is that the person helping Mamata Banerjee in her ‘Congress-mukt' northeast project is poll strategist Prashant Kishor, a friend of Rahul Gandhi. Watch ThePrint Political Editor D.K. Singh in #PoliticallyCorrect.
The infamous Israeli spyware Pegasus has kicked up a storm once again. Over 300 Indians may have been spied on using this dangerous software that can allow a hacker to gain access to pretty much everything in a person's phone including encrypted messages. This egregious breach of privacy was reported by The Wire in a collaborative investigation conducted along with several other international media houses like The Guardian and The Washington Post that found a leaked database with 50,000 phone numbers from across the world, believed to be linked to persons of interest listed by the clients of the NSO — the Israeli firm that sells the Pegasus Spyware. From the first tranche of reports that came on 18 July, we know that 40 of the 300 verified numbers from India belong to journalists from some of India's top media houses like the Hindustan Times, India Today, Network18, The Hindu, The Indian Express and The Wire. The spyware is also believed to have been used on numbers belonging to at least nine rights activists, lawyers and academics who have been arrested in the Bhima Koregaon case. The second tranche of reports, that came on 19 July, state that PM Modi's political adversary Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and political strategist Prashant Kishor's numbers were also added to the list. Ironically, even the recently sworn in IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw who is defending the Centre from allegations of spying is on the target list along with MoS Prahlad Patel. Former Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa and India's leading virologist Dr Gagandeep Kang have featured on the list of potential targets as well. While the NSO claims that it only sells the spyware to "vetted governments", the Indian government has dismissed the reports saying that they are not only 'bereft of facts but also founded in pre-conceived conclusions'. But at a time when our smartphones have become a primary device that stores a lot of our personal data, what does the use of the Pegasus spyware on Indian journalists, opposition leader and other citizens say about the state of surveillance? Who is answerable for this grave assault on privacy? Tune in! Producer and Host: Shorbori Purkayastha Guests: Shashi Tharoor, Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP, Mishi Chaudhury, Lawyer and the Legal Director and founder of the Software Freedom Law Center, Apar Gupta, Executive Director of the Internet Freedom Foundation.
