In this down-to-earth conversation with distiller and outdoorsman Tony Gugino of Eighth District Distilling Co., some of the topics we discuss include: How Tony's childhood exploring and fishing in Upstate New York inform the way he moves through the natural world and experiments with botanicals in his spirits. The attributes and attentional faculties that separate experienced foragers from everybody else, and why foraging is less about memorizing plant names than it is about developing spatial awareness and being in open dialogue with the world around you. Then we use Tony's recent victory as a contestant on Moonshiners: Master Distiller as a case study for how to build a foraged spirit from the ground up, analyzing not just the ingredients he used, but how he braided them into a cohesive, symphonic product. We also delve into foraging for bartenders, specifically: using seasonality and natural harvest cycles as a way to break out of the cloistered, “riff on a classic” approach that can place some bartenders in a creative rut. But foraging isn't just for distillers and bartenders--it's for everyone, so we conclude by offering some advice for home bartenders who have the option to start experimenting with foraging at a truly intimate scale. Along the way, we cover all the reasons why I was jealous of Tony when I first met him, how to make salt - yeah, you heard me…salt, the connection between Mulberries, Silk, and Connecticut's textile industry, and much, much more. Featured Cocktail: The Golden Ghost This episodes' featured cocktail is: The Golden Ghost. To make it, you'll need: ¾ oz Espadin Mezcal ¾ oz Blanco Tequila ¾ oz of clear Creme de cacao ¾ oz genepy (which is a green alpine liqueur from France) 1 dash of orange bitters Combine the ingredients in a mixing glass with ice, stir until well chilled and properly diluted, then strain into a Nick & Nora glass, garnish with a flaming star anise pod, and enjoy. The Golden Ghost is a Bijou riff minted by bartender Brian Evans of the bar Sunday in Brooklyn sometime around 2018. Instead of 1.5 oz of gin, you've got a split base of mezcal and tequila, which kinda tracks. Some of those mineral agave flavors can act like botanicals. The ¾ oz of creme de cacao nods to some of the deeper more confectionary notes that a good sweet vermouth will provide in the Bijou cocktail, with the genepy standing in for Chartreuse to tone down both the proof point and the pour cost.

My name is Antwaine Debnam and on this episode of the podcast we have a very special guest, her name is Shanyelle Young and she’s a successful real estate agent with her own firm. I met her at a conference in Hartford where I was the moderator and she was one of our panelists. She has a very interesting story regarding her rise to success and building her own real estate firm. Also, she has an office with a great view. Shanyelle started out in real estate working for another broker at Gillette Real Estate. Three years ago, she decided to start her own firm, S. Young Realty & Associates, LLC, located in Manchester CT. Her office is conveniently located next door to her husband's insurance company office. This office opening up next door to her husband was also part of the catalyst for her decision to venture out on her own. She has a number of realtors working under her and she’s a mentor to her staff. What I learned and loved when interview her was that she is a war-time general. That means that she is in the trenches working hard with her staff. She still engages with a large number of clients, she lists their homes, find homes for other clients, handles issues that inevitably arise when doing real estate transactions, make sure her clients are getting a good deal, closes that deal, and then helps the client get set up in that home. She does all of this for her own clients while assisting her staff with their customers.
Caitlin Rossi shares with us her life story of how she became more than just an ultra runner. Ultra runners are known for their acts of kindness. Caitlin grew up in a caring home, where taking strangers into their life was the norm. She then transferred this culture of kindness and caring into her adult life, and brought it to the running community, and we have chance to dig into that during this interview. The CULTRA trail running podcast is a place where we can get together and discuss all the fun stuff that happens on the trails, that most normal people don’t care about. CULTRA’s headquarters is located in the belly of the beast coast, Glastonbury Connecticut, so most of our stories involve North East Trail running or North East Trail runners . The language used in this show is not really too bad, unless you have an aversion to monkeys. Silk City Striders in an RRCA running club located in Manchester CT. Jorge was lucky enough to sit down and talk with him before he taught a seminar at Bushido Jiu Jitsu Academy in Manchester CT. We were also fortunate to have two of Master Sauer’s black belts sit in on the conversation, Professor Keith Owen and Professor Rob Magao. Thank you for downloading episode thirteen. I’ve been busy lately and decided to use this recent recording that was essentially already ready to share. Also since the acoustic set I used for episode five, I’ve wanted to also let you hear the band playing a regular electric set. So here is a recently quickly mixed multitrack recording. This is set two from Consider The Source playing at The Main Pub in Manchester, CT on July 26 in 2014. Featuring Jeff Mann on drums, John Ferrara on bass, and Gabriel Marin on guitar. Enjoy!

Thank you for downloading episode nine. This is a concert I had recorded a couple of years ago. This show was multi tracked and mixed and mastered shortly thereafter. The Main Pub is a small restaurant/bar/club that brings in some great musicians. It was a real pleasure to be able to watch these guys play from a few feet away. I hope you feel the same intimacy through this recording.

This is the first in a series of about 6 episodes on the Spiderwick Chronicles. It is a series of 5 books that are brilliant. So you should check them out.
Magic or Madness by Justine Larbalestier. Is magic real or not? Follow Reason to find the answer and find out why it just might be madness.
Septimus Heap is a series of books by Angie Sage. Book One is titled Magyk, and Book Two is titled Flyte. I listen to the first and read the second both were quite good
The Big Empty by J. B. Stephens is a story of the world that may be. A world devastated by a virus that wipes out 3/4 of the world population.
Peeps is a really sweet work of fiction. Every other chapter gives a v v in depth description of the live cycle of a parasite. It was great. Though i suggest it for older teens because of the sex and drinking that are the basis for the story's beginning. All in all it is a fun read that i think you should all check out. It is available at Mary Cheney. Later, ed
This is the 7th summer that we have done a program for teens here at the library. For the past 5 we have had a t-shirt that has promoted reading in a foreign (or fictional) language. This year i decided to make a contest out of it. The logo is based on another fictional language from a series of books. Every 2 books that you read over the summer gets you a guess at what it says. Every correct answer gets you an entry into a drawing for a 1Gb iPod Nano. In addition you also get to enter a second drawing every 10 books that you read. So the more you read the better your chances are of winning. Contact me if you have any questions. ed
Mirrormask is actually a book that is based on a movie. It was written by Neil Gaiman who is an amazing writer. But almost better than that is that it is illustrated by Dave McKean who was responsible for the covers of Coralina and the Sandman Series. I would suggest taking a look at the book and the movie. And remember if you yell at a book and throw it to the ground it very well might give you a ride to come see us here at the library. That and you might get to catch your very own library book using a butterfly net. Be caref]ul not to scare them or they could shed all of their pages
Want to be a private investigator. Well find out what happens when a sixth grader actually gets a PI license and his life is change. Whether or not this is going to be a series i can't tell. But i definitely want to know what Fletcher "Half" Moon gets into next.
What a great book this is. I have listened to all four of them. It isn't uncommon that when i get to my destination i linger a bit to hear just a wee bit more of the story. The narrator does a brilliant job with the accents too.
Merv talks about the last book he listened to. Yes i said listened to. It is a great alternative to reading. Hope you enjoy it as much as he did.

Microserfs by Douglas Coupland is a satirical look at the Microsoft culture during the early 90s. It's absolutely brilliant. The comparison between MS and Apple's employee culture is fantasatic.
