Are you having a tough time talking to your older teen or young adult?  If they are living at home with you, how do you deal with setting rules for them?  Do you find yourself constantly biting your tongue, or are you in constant conflict with them?  There comes a point when your kid starts growing up, and you need to realize they're their own person now. It's like, “Holy crickets! They're in charge of their own life, now!”  For parents, this shift to a new kind of relationship with their adult child can be pretty tricky. That's why my guest this week is Parent Coach, Kim Muench. She's the Founder of Real Life Parent Guide.  Kim is a Certified Conscious Parenting Coach with the Jai Institute for Parenting, and specializes in working with parents of emerging adults (ages 18-29). In this conversation we talk about setting healthy boundaries as the relationship with your child shifts under your feet. Kim has some solid ideas about how to open up the lines of communication and reconnect with your child.  Hint: Much of the work starts with us, the parents.     **This is Kim's second time on the podcast.  In our first conversation (Episode 117) we talked about her own challenges as a parent which led her to become a parenting coach.  In 2008, her oldest son called her from across the country to say he was in trouble… he was failing classes, about to lose his job, and his use of alcohol was totally out of control.

In this episode, we provide you with some hard truths, Mommas. Stefanie Fernandes gave some great analogies to help you awaken a part of us as moms that we often take for granted. We are already perfect just being imperfect. When we strive to constantly keep up with the Jones, we set ourselves up for a train wreck.  Comparison is just one of the walls we built that keeps us from living our best lives. Accepting ourselves is often just as important as “fixing” our old thoughts. Stefanie Fernandes is a certified parent coach with the Jai Institute for Parenting and a Rapid Transformational Therapy Practitioner trained under Marisa Peer. She is also a hypnobirthing teacher, providing antenatal classes, where pregnant women prepare for birth with an empowered and confident mindset allowing for a positive birth and paving the way for a positive and conscious parenting journey. Stefanie combines ground-breaking methods to support moms throughout their parenthood journey in her practice “The Family Circle”. As a cycle-breaker herself, Stefanie is passionate about teacher mothers in all stages of motherhood applicable tools for a better wellbeing of the mother and a deeper connection with their children. She is convinced, that the quality of the relationship a mom has with herself determines the quality of the relationship she has with her child. It all starts with us a mothers. I get this question a lot. Sometimes people ask me because they know they want to be more peaceful, but some people ask because they think it means raising kids who are entitled snowflakes. I get it, and frankly, I wasn't sure if it was for me until I understood what it was all about. In a “full circle moment” I'm interviewing Kiva Shuler, the CEO of the Jai Institute of Parenting where I was trained and certified as a Parent Coach! We are talking about what “Peaceful Parenting” is, and what it isn't. We know that our childhoods carry enormous weight throughout our lives. As parents we have to approach the job of raising our children in a new way that recognizes we are living in a different world and we are tackling issues and situations that didn't exist before. Peaceful parenting recognizes that our children are facing new challenges with mental health, social media, and the online world. Parenting in a more peaceful way doesn't mean your kids run the show. It doesn't mean there aren't boundaries. As parents we know we can't be perfect, and we aren't trying to be, but we show up for our kids with humility, curiosity, listening, and honouring who our kids are, not who we expect them to be (how many of us wish we had a little “mini me”? I know I did!). We know parenting can be painful, frustrating, gut wrenching and full of joy, fun, excitement and connection. It can be all these things at once! For Kiva's masterclass, The science of staging calm, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Kiva SchulerKiva Schuler is the Founder and CEO of The Jai Institute for Parenting, an organization that has trained over 1,000 parenting coaches globally. She is also the author of the ground-breaking book The Peaceful Parenting (R)evolution: Changing the World by Changing How We Parent which examines the "consequences" of traditional parenting methods and offers a more modern approach grounded in emotional intelligence, values-led leadership, and effective communication.Kiva's passion for parenting stemmed from her own childhood experiences of neglect and trauma. Like many of her generation, she had a front-row seat to the kind of parenting that she did not want for her own children. The Jai Institute is the fulfillment of a promise that she made to herself when she was 16 years old that when she had children of her own, she would learn to parent them with compassion, consistency and communication.Kiva's passion, enthusiasm and effervescence instantly create openness, connection, and inspiration with her audiences. On a mission to change the culture around parenting, Kiva wants children to grow up to reach their full potential, and live their lives free of trauma, shame and emotional wounds. I struggled to find a connection with my two boys. I had so much love for them, but I found I was often overwhelmed with their needs and losing my temper on a regular basis (sometimes even more than them!). The more frustrated I got, the unhappier I felt. I knew what I was doing wasn't working and that there must be a better way. Through searching for answers, found the Conscious Parenting community. I discovered how I could connect with my kids and through this connection, I found myself, I found joy, and I found my life's work...but most importantly, I found a connection with the people I love the most on this earth, my two boys!I am a certified Parenting Coach through the Jai Institute for Parenting. I have worked with a wide variety of parents from Canada, The United States, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. I feel honored to have found this way of parenting and to be able to help families who are experiencing some of the same struggles I have faced. Because of this work, I am a more confident, happy, and connected parent.I live on the beautiful West Coast. Together with my husband Cory, we are raising two fun, energetic and athletic boys. When I'm not working, I enjoy being active, connecting with friends & family, and being a cheerleader on the sidelines of my boys' sports. About the Host:Nellie Harden is a wife of 20+ years, mom to 4 teen/tween daughters, dreamer, adventurer, servant, multipreneur, forever student, and a devoted teacher, but her career passion is her work as a Family Life & Leadership Coaching, especially for parents of young women ages 9-18yo. Coming from a career background in marine mammal sciences, behavioral work, and a host of big life experiences, both great and some not-so-great, she decided that designing a life of purpose and freedom was how she and her husband, along with their 4 daughters, wanted to live. She helps parents to stop wasting time and energy in power struggles so they can focus on building their daughter's worth, esteem, and confidence as young women before they ever leave home. With a lifelong passion and curiosity in thought, choice, behavior, and growth she has found incredible joy in helping families shift perspective, find answers, and a path forward. EPISODE 61 - We talk all things parenting with our guest Kim Muench Author of Becoming Me While Raising You – a Mother's Journey to Her SelfKim's mission is to help Moms unlock their inner wisdom so they can be the calm, confident guide their children deserve. In May 2008, I went through the greatest parenting challenge of my life. The eldest of my five children called me from across the country to say he was in trouble…he was failing classes, about to lose his job, and his use of alcohol was totally out of control. At the time he was twenty years old. When I answered his call for help, I didn't waste time wondering how it had happened or ask myself, “Why me?!” I knew the way I had parented him and was parenting, contributed to the life-threatening situation he was in and one that I could no longer deny. During his spiral through the darkness, I worked with my son to help him find long term sobriety by supporting and encouraging him but never doing for him what he could do for himself. It wasn't easy, all the while my energy and focus were on discovering and understanding where things between he and I, actually myself and all of my children, could be different/better/healthier/more connected. I knew any change in our relationship started with me. And, to this day, it continues with me. So I began to educate myself on how the parent/child relationship really works, in tandem, I slowly made my own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being a priority. That included parenting in a completely different light! Today my kids range from teen to married and my son is more than a decade sober. In my journey to redefine my role as a mom who would guide, instead of trying to control my kid's choices and behavior, one who would work hand-in-hand with them instead of trying to dominate the relationship, I was led to research dozens of parenting, self-discovery, and personal growth books and courses. My quest prompted me to return to college to finish a degree in psychology, and it led me to an internship where my greatest responsibility was supporting and encouraging other parents who had teens in outpatient addiction treatment. In addition, my path has led me to write a soon-to-be-published memoir about my experience as a mother with a child in the throes of addiction called Becoming Me While Raising You – A mother's journey to her self. Ultimately, my journey took me to a certification in parent coaching through the Jai Institute for Parenting because I believe the quality of the relationship between ourselves and our children is the essence of what it will take to create positive change in the world, not only during our lifetime but for future generations as well.  https://reallifeparentguide.com/___Affiliate book Link: Becoming Me While Raising You, A Mother's Journey to Her Self___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Start your podcast today! She is a certified Gentle Parenting Coach and has worked directly with some of the world's most respected psychologists, neuroscientists, researchers and advocates for children. She also graduated from improvisational comedy school — that may be a first for this show, that's awesome! She's also the editor for Pregnancy Magazine and a master trainer for The Jai Institute for Parenting. In this episode, Sarah and I discuss the important role of Play in a child's life and in the parent's life. Play doesn't take a ton of effort like you might think. All it takes is focus. Play is anything your child delights in doing. You don't have to spend a ton of energy coming up with scenarios or making crafts you found on pinterest, just stop and do whatever your child is doing as long as they are delighting in it. We'll also discuss the benefits of play from the perspective of a child's growth and overall health. And how you can divide and conquer to make sure each of your children is getting a bit of playtime without you burning out. Learn more about Sarah here. Connect with Dr. Nicole Beurkens on... What a year 2020 has been already! Our children have so much to navigate at the minute, that it can be really daunting for parents to learn how to relinquish control. It's our responsibility to guide our children through all the challenges and obstacles that they are facing. If you can relate to this, you'll love this episode with Tia Fagan, who encourages us beautifully to parent from a place of curiosity rather than fear. When we learn to let go and parent from the heart - it somehow takes the pressure away from us parents to be perfect and frees our children also from having to measure up all the time - it can be truly liberating. Tia explains that when we release control and open up space for our children to learn, they begin to trust their own inner guidance. Our children are then better equipped to navigate the challenges they face, safe in the knowledge that they will weather their storms -with is by their sides. ~~~~~ Tia Fagan is a Certified Conscious Parent Coach, certified with Dr. Shefali Tsabary in the Conscious Parenting MethodTM and with the Jai Institute for Parenting.   As a mother of twin daughters, now in college, she has experienced each developmental stage of parenting children. Tia's passion is helping parents strengthen relationships, increase connection, and improve communication within their family.    Tia helps parents understand why their child is behaving the way they are and how-to guide, connect, and support them to create thriving relationships.   Tia has a gift for showing up without judgment and guiding with support and compassion.   Website: https://tiafagan.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tiafagancoach/   Masks Off Podcast : Who are you behind the masks you wear?   "Our children come through us, not for us, but for the lessons they reflect to us, during their journey, in an effort to grow us up along the way."  When we were young we were told that children should be seen and not heard. Now - as parents ourselves, we are told that our children's needs are paramount. Somewhere along the line we have missed out!

We are often told to trust our gut, our intuition. But how can we trust it (or even hear it) if we have not yet discovered who we truly are ourselves? Through having years of putting other's needs first, and not having a voice, many of us struggle to follow our own instincts; and yet Kim and I are in agreement that it is on our instinct that we must rely as parents - because we know our family's needs the best. In this episode Kim and I explore the importance of hearing that inner voice and sometimes, relinquishing control. As parents, it's scary to drop the reins - but by allowing our children to lead the way in their own lives, we set ourselves up for more connection and less confrontation. Whilst listening to our own heart we must teach our children to do the same; and with that comes the likelihood of things not always going according to plan - and that's totally OK! ~~~~~

A fierce advocate of integrity, creativity and abundance in sales and marketing, Kiva is a leader in the field of women, money and business. She believes that entrepreneurial endeavors, particularly through online vehicles, are the key to self-reliance, flexibility and financial independence for women.

She is a successful marketer in the field of online coaching and personal development, and has co-created and written campaigns for luminaries such as Fabienne Fredrickson, Gay Hendricks and Christopher Howard, and been the Co-Host of the World Business Executive Coaching Summit. Her entrepreneurial endeavors and keen marketing abilities have generated millions in sales online, but more importantly, have allowed transformational work to reach the people who need it in the areas of parenting, spirituality, health and wellness, finance and entrepreneurship.
Kiva is the founder of two conscious businesses… The Jai Institute for Parenting and The Heartfelt Business, which is a creative agency for Transformational Leaders.   This conversation went deep into the struggle many feel around money, worthiness and abundance consciousness. Kiva shared her rich story about leaving a high paying stock broker job and marriage in order to have the spiritual download that she was meant to create her own businesses and follow her inner guidance. This was such a rich interview with a ton of new ways to look at your relationship to money, abundance and manifesting. Here are some of the key take-aways: Kiva embodies what she calls a forehead stance on life by surrendering to something higher, which she calls Life. Say yes to what Life presents and learn to trust Life fully. The biggest lie we've been told is that we live in zero-sum game and a world of finite resources; if you have something I want, then I can't have it. This is completely untrue and this belief is poisoning human consciousness. We must train ourselves to see the world through a new lense. There isn't a fixed amount of resources. We live in an ever expanding universe where there's more bio mass, green energy and new life every year. In the end, nature always wins. You can't have an abundance consciousness and have fear at the same time. It's about embodying a state of being that knows there are infinite resources. We must let go of what we were told. We are plugged into the natural abundance of Life, which grows and dies, ebbs and flows. That is the nature of nature. When we have a programming of not enough, our ego collects evidence that this is true. The first step is just to notice this inner dialogue. Don't try and change it, just get curious and ask 'is this true'?    Connect with Kiva Schuler Website: http://theheartfulbusiness.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kivaschuler/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kivaleatherman Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kiva_schuler   Enjoying the show? Disclaimer: In this episode, we discuss times we have caused harm. We encourage you to seek real BIPOC educators and pay them for their expertise. We know we are not experts. If you listen please know that as white women of privilege, having been on this journey for only a few years, we recognize our privilege and fragility. We discuss times we caused harm to BIPOC in actions and words. We are learning about racism and hope to share our journey as we educate ourselves about its centuries-long impacts. Tia Fagan and Cara would like to expressly acknowledge that we are wholly unqualified to know the extent of the effects of racism. We are hoping to inspire our listeners, who would like to expand their knowledge and awareness to join us in anti-racist/anti -racism learning. We discuss our experiences with defining racism, awareness of it, or lack thereof. We explore the reasons our words and actions can cause harm to people, what we thought we knew wasn't, and what we personally thought we knew, we didn't. Tia is one of the esteemed team members on the Cara Pollard Coaching team & contributes to this discussion. Tia describes a recent intense stirring within her to share her expressions. She says, "This is active, messy work and I know I continue to do harm because I continue to do it imperfectly. There's still so much to learn.” We discuss some of the following points: Work we’ve done and resources we find helpful What we learned What surprised us More work we intend to continue doing How we think families can do work together to learn about racism What we think companies should do for real Diversity and Inclusion practices The policy changes needed in educational, financial, housing, and criminal justice systems Why we think the police need deeper training and why reallocating funds is important For more information about Tia Fagan please visit TiaFagan.com .Tia specializes in supporting families navigate times of transition by guiding them through a 5-step parenting process, helping them SHIFT from surviving to thriving. Are you tired of the battle of wills to get your kids to listen, and feeling guilty and frustrated after yet another yelling match? Robbin McManne is a certified Parenting Coach through the Jai Institute for Parenting. She has worked with a wide variety of parents from Canada, The United States, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Robbin feels honored to have found this way of parenting and to be able to help families who are experiencing some of the same struggles she has faced.  Because of this work, Robbin is a more confident, happy, and connected parent. In this episode, Robbin McManne dives deep into her background – when she entered the world of motherhood, she thought she knew herself well. However, Robbin wasn’t able to reconcile the way the birth went with her child. It set her up for years of feeling bad about herself. Robbin didn’t feel like she was a good enough mother – she was in a deep depression, and she yelled all the time. Peaceful parenting changed Robbin’s entire world. Robbin speaks about finding our triggers. We can unconsciously yell at our children based on the things that happened in our own childhood. Robbin would yell because her father would never listen to her. One of Robbin’s clients would get triggered because his family was cold with him, so he started to be cold with his child. It can be challenging for men to articulate their feelings. When we yell, we are feeling unvalued and disregarded. There is a reason everyone has different triggers – it all depends on our experiences. Then, Robbin talks about why we need to stop shaming ourselves. We need to allow ourselves grace and self-compassion. To be human is to be flawed. It’s okay! Robbin says we need to stop for a second and think about what our anger is about. A great deal of our happiness comes from being intentional. When we have thoughts, we need to realize that they are not facts. Do not label things because your brain will try and prove them to be true. We need to interrupt our patterns. Stay tuned as Robbin explains why it’s not too late, and she reveals some quick parenting tips.
