Welcome to Episode #17 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Ana Paula Hernández onto the show. She is a yoga teacher and studio owner from Mexico. Ana hit rock bottom, suffering from addiction depression, and eating disorders, and she felt like the medical system was failing her— it was yoga that saved her. She even describes her first yoga class as an exorcism. Yin yoga was part of her full recovery. As Ana Paula says, “Through yoga, with yoga, through silence, through resilience, through holding— that's a healing process, that's why yin is so important to me.” Now, Ana Paula works with the elderly and with medical protocols. Her mission is to “cut early their conditions,”and even though she's not a doctor but she works alongside them. Ana Paula works alongside neurologists and doctors with elderly patients to help them ease or reverse their symptoms of diseases. Ana Paula has another important message, which she stresses here in our conversation— don't weaponize yoga. “Stop the fighting, stop the dividing, start reconciling with yourself.” Ready for more? Yoga in Mexico here we go! Tell me more about Ana Paula Hernández… Ana Paula Hernández first began her journey with Yoga in 2002. She received her first certification in Vancouver BC, under the guidance of Shakti Mhi at Prana College in Hatha Yoga 200 YA. Ana Paula then found her passion for the various styles of Yoga, starting a series of certifications, including Yin Yoga in 2004, Restorative Yoga 2006 under the guidance of Nevah (Wendy Eaton), and Mat Pilates under the guidance of Martha Hernandez. Moreover, in 2006 Ana Paula completed a year-long course in Ayurvedic Medicine and Cooking with Dr. Shiva Varma. She then went on to complete certifications in Yoga Nidra, Prenatal Yoga, Yoga for Kids, and Thai Massage. Ana Paula taught yoga from the beginning of her career in Vancouver, before returning home to Mexico in 2008 where she immediately opened with a small home yoga studio, and in 2011 she opened the Drishti Center in San Antonio Tlayacapan, Mexico. Since then, Ana Paula has been leading the 200 hour yoga teacher training and continuing education program for yogis and advanced teachers. Ana offers classes, workshops and certifications throughout Mexico and abroad. For the skimmers - What's in the Mexico episode? Hello listeners! This week on Tech Forward, we are rebroacasting our episode 2 interview with madeBOS founder and CEO, Martha Hernandez. Martha has served in several Talent Acquisition and Talent Management and Sales leadership roles for organizations such as Coro, Give Something Back, Mi Pueblo Food Centers, and Inner City Advisors' Talent Management Initiative. Most recently, she was Save Mart Supermarkets' Director of Talent Acquisition. Martha has a successful track record of  strategizing and delivering critical human capital initiatives, technical implementations and integrations. She’s passionate about adding transparency in the talent selection and promotion process, access to opportunity, diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. MadeBOS grew from Martha’s passion for shaping people’s professional growth and development, no matter their starting point or current trajectory. “Seeing people develop, starting in one place and seeing their growth into more influential roles, [...] gave me a personal satisfaction. I wanted more of that.” To that end, madeBOS is an AI driven, career pathing platform that creates economic mobility for entry level workers in retail. “MadeBOS was simply a way for me to replicate that feeling, and be able to implement it globally.” From a lightning bolt of inspiration, to a series of 52 handwritten note cards (really!), to the full-fledged AI platform that it is today, Martha’s journey to implement madeBOS has been a fascinating one. Despite lacking the “typical pedigree” that VC investors look for, Martha’s passion and enthusiasm never flagged. In this way, she has truly lived the process that madeBOS strives to deliver to its users. “Sometimes, we feel stuck. An opportunity might look so big that we quit.” “I think we all have our moments. [...] It’s important to get angry, because that’s a fuel to keep going, passionately. This persistence is also because we haven’t given the world — meaning people in general — an opportunity to do things differently. [...] I’m not making excuses for people who haven’t invested in people like me. It’s just that [Latinx people] arrived to the party late, in terms of resources and access and social capital.” In this episode, we discuss the barriers that Latina and other women of color entrepreneurs face in getting access to funding and other support for their businesses. What specific challenges and fears did Martha face along the way, and how did she overcome them? Listen along and find out. Thank you as always for listening, sharing, and reviewing the show. Hello and welcome back to Tech Forward, listeners. For those of you in the US, Happy 4th of July! I hope you enjoy the day off, whether you go out and get some sun or unwind with family and friends. Today, in light of the holiday, we’re going to do something a little different. Instead of bringing on a special guest, I’m going to go over some of the highlights and common themes from the first 15 exciting episodes of the show. We’ve covered a lot of ground since we launched nearly four months ago in mid March. Though our guests have come from a wide variety of backgrounds, career trajectories, and current roles, many of them have expressed similar struggles and insights about the tech world. Since we’ll be digging into many of these themes further in upcoming episodes, let’s recap. Allie Burns and Andreas Freund shared their thoughts on why the diversity problem exists, as well as some of the reasons why there is a persistent funding gap for underrepresented founders. Along those lines, Caroline Hofmann touched on why it benefits companies and society as a whole to solve that problem. Martha Hernandez discussed barriers to fundraising for women of color, and the need to find alternatives to the traditional fundraising process. We heard from Janet Wu about the importance of building a diverse team, and Angelica Coleman confidently debunked the pervasive myth of the “pipeline problem.” Courtney Bass brought up the idea of culture “fit” versus culture “add” in diversity recruiting. In terms of the recruiting process itself, Stephanie Lampkin reminded us how prevalent our biases can be, to the point where even someone’s name can influence hiring decisions. Finally, Lisa Cuesta, Hayley Leibson, and Jarrid Tingle all shared pertinent advice for anyone looking to enter the tech sector, regardless of position. I’d like to thank all my guests so far for coming onto the show to share their stories, advice, and insights, as well as all of you who tune in every week. For my newer listeners, I do hope you’ll go back and listen to some of the brilliant people who have been on the show so far. Martha Hernandez is a powerhouse Latina in tech. She is the force behind madeBOS, which is a platform that helps low wage workers break the cycle of poverty by helping them take control of their careers. Today, Martha is applying that same spirit to supporting people in achieving their dreams. Having worked her way up the corporate ranks from a career in retail that led to sales and eventually recruiting, she realized that if she hadn't had a manager that recognized her natural talents with people and sales abilities, she may never have made the career moves she did. It was this realization, combined with her work in talent management and development that led to the foundation of madeBOS.
