In 2025, we're going on a Celtic Invasion of Galicia in Spain. Galicia is indeed one of the more obscure Celtic nations to those of us who are most familiar with Ireland and Scotland. Find out more at CelticInvasion.com. 9:43 - IRISH DRINKING SONGS FOR CAT LOVERS In 2003, I was back from Dragon Con chatting with a friend on the phone. The Irish song “Wild Rover” was stuck in my head as we started talking about cats. The chorus came around and I started meowing. An idea started growing in my head. What if I parodied a bunch of traditional Irish drinking songs with lyrics all about cats. I wrote my first three songs before the end of October. I then found Ari Koinuma in Austin to help me produce the single. I set up a website at CatDrinkingSongs.com. In December, someone posted the idea to Fark. I had 20,000 website hits in one day and hundreds of comments. I knew this was a great idea. In May of 2005, I launched a podcast to help raise money for a CD of Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. Thus was born the Cat Lovers Podcast. 10:54 - CAT MUSIC LOVERS #1: “WILD KITTY” AND CATS IN PHYSICS (REBOOT) In honor of the 20 year anniversary of my first cat CD, Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers, I am re-releasing the Cat Lovers Podcast on this feed. God Became Human to Enable Jesus Followers to Have a Personal Relationship with Him through His Grace and Gift of the Holy Spirit MESSAGE SUMMARY: As Jesus tells us in John 15:12-14, that you, as His follower, are His “friend: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends.". God became flesh, and He dwelt among us. God became human to draw you into a personal relationship with Him. In John 1:14, the Apostle John identifies Jesus as the “Son of the Father”: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.". God alone can satisfy the meaning and purpose of your life. God alone can satisfy your hunger to know your life's meaning. Most importantly, God alone can give you forgiveness of your sins as Paul tells us in Colossians 2:13-14: “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.". Jesus' life, miracles, death, and His resurrection are invitations to a life-long personal relationship with God, the Creator of the Universe. Our personal relationship with God is through His gift, to followers of Jesus, of the Holy Spirit. TODAY'S PRAYER: Surely it is God who saves me. I will trust in Him and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my defense, and He is my savior. Therefore, you shall draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation. And on that day, you shall say, “Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His Name; make His deeds known among the peoples; see that they remember that His Name is exalted.”. Amen. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will entrust to Him my future. I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. In Our Suffering, Economic Uncertainty, and Health Crises, You Can Still Rejoice as a Jesus Follower Because Jesus has Made You His Own MESSAGE SUMMARY: By accepting Jesus, you can be born of the Holy Spirit and have your sins forgiven by His sacrificial death on the cross, through God's Grace. Paul explains, in Philippians 3:9b-12, that Jesus “has made me His own”: ‘but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Straining Toward the Goal. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own'.”. Amidst suffering and loss; economic uncertainty; and family crises, you can still celebrate and rejoice because you know that God has given your life and life eternal. We know that God is with us, and He will never leave us. Amen. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will seek God's perspective on my situation. For I know that in all things God works together for good to those of us who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Is Your Life Driven by Anxiety, or Do You Walk with the Holy Spirit Who Is Working Out God's Purpose in Your Life? MESSAGE SUMMARY: Where is God's involvement in your life? God's “life interventions”, in your life, can provide either a success or a setback. For example, we lose a job; or we get a job. God can turn our world upside down. It is not that we have done anything wrong; it is the Holy Spirit working out God's purpose in your life. We need to hear what the Angels said in Mathew 1:20: “an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.'”; and we need to hear what Jesus said in Mathew 6:34: “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”. If we follow the lead of the Holy Spirit in all aspects and seasons of our lives, we can see the birthing of another miracle in our lives. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 132). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Inconsistencies. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Faithfulness. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). Do You Have a Personal Relationship with God and Pray Directly to God, the Creator of the Universe, for the Needs of Others MESSAGE SUMMARY: Will you come before God with your prayers, and for whom will you pray? We can and should come before God on behalf ourselves and others -- intercessory prayer. You and I are given the privilege of following Moses' example when he prayed to God on behalf of his people in Psalms 102:1-2: “Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to you! Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call!". Because of what Jesus has done for us, we can exercise this privilege of praying directly to God, the Creator of the Universe. You come before God by talking to Him with your prayers and in a personal relationship with Him. For whom and what do you pray? TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 132). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Inadequacy. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Abundance. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). Anxiety Is Never a Helpful Lens for Your Life's Focus – “Do not be anxious about your life . . . seek his kingdom” MESSAGE SUMMARY: Put a name on the cause of your anxiety and offer it to the Lord in prayer. Anxiety is never a helpful lens though which to focus your life. As Jesus tells you, in Luke 12:22,31, that you should not be anxious and to seek first the Kingdom of God: “And he said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on . . . Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you . . .'”. Also, Paul tells us, in Philippians 4:14, that: “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. As a follower of Jesus today, why are you anxious? Remember, you have a personal relationship with God, the Creator of the Universe. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, everything in me resists following you into the garden of Gethsemane to fall on my face to the ground before you. Grant me the courage to follow you all the way to the cross, whatever that might mean for my life. And then, by your grace, lead me to resurrection life and power. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 100). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. To Become Jesus Followers: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” MESSAGE SUMMARY: Every time you lie or cheat or lust or get stoned, you put a barrier between yourself and God because God is Holy. God's Holiness prevents Him from communing with sinners. The author of 1 John tells us in 1 John 3:8: “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.". God brought Jesus, who was both God and man, to live on earth. Therefore, Jesus' blood sacrifice on the cross permitted Him to take on your sins. By His sacrifice, Jesus became the doorway for your personal relationship with God and a path for your Salvation from your sins (1 John 1:9-10): “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.". A Prior “Independence Day Devotional” as We Prepare to Celebrate Again - We Must Have a Great Spiritual Awakening that Returns America to God MESSAGE SUMMARY: Will you "Stand in the Gap" and participate in a Great Awakening and Spiritual Renewal in America? The signers of the Declaration of Independence, in 1776, began a revolution which led to the formation of the United States of America. This Revolution was rooted in the belief that all people are subject to the rule of God, even the King; and leaders are not above man's law or God's Law. Also, everyone is endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. Many people have tried to deny that America's founders created a country which wove together the concept of self-governance with Christian principles. Now, it appears the focus, of many political and church leaders, is to eliminate ideas, laws, policies, and objects that relate America to Christianity, the Bible, or anything that smacks of God. Today, this focus away from God is succeeding. We all need to hear what our founders said regarding America's Christian base. Not long after the enactment of the Constitution in the late 1700s, morality and church attendance declined drastically into a Spiritual Depression. The answer to this 1700s turn away from God became the nationwide implementation of "Concerts of Prayer", across all Christian denominations, which led to an American Spiritual Awakening. Today, through our actions, laws, and cultural revisions of our founding Christian principles, we have told God that we do not want Him around. Therefore, we must consider what God said He would do and what He has done in the past when people have turned away from Him, as told in Psalms 2:1-2,5,10-12: “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed . . . Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying . . . Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.". In the past, as indicated in Psalms 2, God has withdrawn His presence, including His protection and divine wisdom, when people have turned away from Him. God's presence has guided America for so many years, and the withdrawal of God's presence in America would leave us to reap the consequences of our focus away from Him. Also, consider what the Lord said, in Ezekiel 22:30-31: "And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none. Therefore, I have poured out my indignation upon them. I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath. I have returned their way upon their heads, declares the Lord God.”. However, in Zechariah 1:3 and in many other promises throughout the Bible, God says to his people in the past and to us today: “Therefore say to them, Thus declares the LORD of hosts: ‘Return to me', says the LORD of hosts, ‘and I will return to you', says the LORD of hosts.". Will you "Stand in the Gap”, on behalf of your country, to participate in and lead a Great Awakening and Spiritual Renewal in America by returning America to God? We must have a Spiritual Awakening to return America to God. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I come this day inviting you to cut those deeply entrenched chains that keep me from being faithful to my true self in Christ. In doing so, may my life be a blessing to many. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 44). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Loneliness. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Presence. “I am the vine; you are the branches. The Old Testament Law of “an eye for an eye” Was Reversed by Jesus in His “Great Commandment” in which Jesus Followers Are “to Love” MESSAGE SUMMARY: Jesus turned the prior teachings of the Law on their heels by commanding that personal relationships be based on “Love” not “Law and Justice”. Prior to the New Covenant of Jesus the Christ, the Jewish Law included "an eye for an eye . . .". Jesus, in Matthew 5:38-39, provides the cornerstone of His Greatest Commandment – “love thy neighbor as thy self” when He tells us: “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.”. The Old Testament Law was for the Judges to help the courts punish people in an appropriate and consistent way. God's Grace provided us with the means, if we so choose, for the forgiveness of our sins and for our Salvation and Eternal Life when our eternal death was the “Law and Justice” outcome of our sins. God's Grace sets the model for us to live a life of “Love” – “Love” God's way. TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM FORGIVEN. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Matthew 5:38-42; Hebrews 9:15; 1 John 4:19; Psalms 77b:11-20. The Day of Pentecost – The Promise Fulfilled (All Saints Anglican Church; Peachtree City, GA) MESSAGE SUMMARY: The Day of Pentecost – The Promise Fulfilled (All Saints Anglican Church; Peachtree City, GA) In 1900, a Roman Catholic Nun obeyed the voice of the Lord, and she wrote to Pope Leo encouraging him to pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This request began a chain of events: a nun wrote a letter; a Pope and his Cardinals prayed; and the world received a Pentecostal outpouring of the Holy Spirit through many Christian denominations during a great revival in the early twentieth century. Today, the world, along with all of us, needs to be renewed with a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost, initially, was about: people being filled with the Holy Spirit; people received Spiritual gifts; and people witnessing for Jesus. On this initial day of Pentecost, Peter stood up and preached a sermon. Afterwards, he was asked: “What must we do to be saved?”. Peter responded in Acts 2:38-39: “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.'". These events of the initial Pentecost and from the various revivals of the 20th Century relating to the Charismatic Movements are normal Christianity; this outpouring of the Holy Spirit is what God intends for His people. If we are going to have a growing relationship with Jesus, we must be filled with the Holy Spirit who enables us to know and commune with the Lord. The Holy Spirit will never lead followers of Jesus in any thing that contradicts the Bible, God's Word. In recent times, there have been teachings, regarding the Holy Spirit, that do not conform to the Bible. Too many of us are trying to live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit. The question is asked: “When do we receive the Holy Spirit?”. We cannot put God in a box regarding a timing for the receipt of the Holy Spirit. However, a better question is: “Have we received the Holy Spirit?”. We are told in John 3:8: “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.". Therefore, the real question should be: “Does the Holy Spirit have me?”. Until we surrender our lives to Jesus, the Holy Spirit cannot indwell our lives and lead us. The best answer to the timing our receipt of the Holy Spirit is: “We should receive the Holy Spirit every day.”. We should pray every day for the Holy Spirit to fill us. We know that, if we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are given the “fruit of the Spirit”, as described by Paul in Galatians 5:16-26: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." If we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we will bear the fruits of the Spirit and not the flesh. However, if we sin, we are not in the Holy Spirit. Pentecost reminds us that if we yield our lives to the will of God through the Holy Spirit, we are filled with the Holy Spirit; and we are given Spiritual gifts to witness for Jesus. If we are filled with the Holy Spirit; others see Jesus in us – this countenance of Jesus, seen through our lives, is the most powerful tool a Christian can have for evangelism. Are you grieving the Holy Spirit or are you filled with the Holy Spirit? TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. The 1st law of psychology ‘we do what is expected' was in full play in Dr. Shania Seibles life while growing up. Her parents were born in the 1940's. Both received their PhD's. One in physical chemistry and the other in organic chemistry during a time when it was difficult for minorities to do so in our country. Whether her parent's expectations were spoken or unspoken Shania knew she too would do something great one day. There was never a moment where she decided to be a doctor, or entrepreneur, or for that matter rich. She just knew she would be. Dr. Shania Seibles, an Atlanta area physician, a D.O. specializing in Maternal Fetal Medicine – OBGYN – believes in the healing power of massage therapy so much that she now owns her own MassageLuXe spa in Peachtree City, Georgia. All the links 2024 - Week 5 - Be Adventurous This is an episode about how the mind creates ideas and stories. And how it's important to decide what's important to you and not let your mind get carried away. My birthday was January 22, which fell on a Monday and my intention was to do a trip to a cabin with my husband, it's a vacation we've not done together before. I like doing new things and not necessarily traveling to places I've been before, unless it's going to Destin Florida, which I absolutely adore. I digress. In my mind, I found a place, and we would go there and be nice and cozy. I also created this lovely weekend of snuggling up somewhere, and staying warm and just relaxing. Well, my mind creates all kinds of interesting stories and adventures. As it came closer to the time to book something, I didn't want to do that. A part of me wanted to stay home. Another part of me wanted to go away. I was back and forth for a few weeks. I just couldn't decide. See how the mind does! Guess what I did... I let go. I just said things would work out. And they did. The weekend of my birthday it was cold… I know I'm from the south so cold is relative. lol it was hovering in the 14° range, so I think that is cold just about anywhere. The idea of packing and checking in and out of somewhere and driving a few hours (in the cold) to get home did not sound appealing. TD and I enjoyed an adventurous weekend around town. One definition of adventurous is willing to take risks or to try new methods, ideas or experiences. We created our own birthday weekend adventure. On Friday night we went to watch our son, Tyriel, coach as one of the assistant coaches for Woodland High School girls basketball. On Saturday evening we discovered a new restaurant in Peachtree City, about 45 mins away, called The Yacht Club. The food was delicious and our server was very attentive. The weekend was filled with trying new restaurants in cities nearby, watching the movie American Fiction, which was entertaining, and just spending time together. It was a delightful adventure. One of my requests was that I didn't cook all weekend… and I didn't. On Monday, I also got to have brunch with Yvette Lee, a dear friend and the composer of the music you hear on this podcast and other meditations. We enjoyed breakfast at one my favorite restaurants, The Flying Biscuit, the original one in Atlanta. Yummy. While the idea of being at a cabin sounded nice, being home and waking up when we wanted to was even nicer. I live in the south for a reason, I was so glad to be able to sleep in and get up when I wanted to. I was so glad we were home in our OWN bed… with our flannel sheets. TD gets a special thanks for just going with the flow of whatever I decided to do. MUAH! So… there mind stories. The weekend was just right! And you know what? It was just the adventure we needed.Learning to navigate all the stories my mind can make up is PRACTICE. Be Adventurous is the excerpt from my book/eBook/audiobook, Why Struggle? Life is too short to wear tight shoes, I'm sharing today. What new experience/adventure have you had lately? I'd love to hear from you. American sculptor Leah Jeffery transforms scrap metal into beautiful pieces of art depicting birds and animals. Leah was born in 2000 in Tampa, Florida one of eight children to Suzanne, a home-maker and home-schooler, and Craig, a business consultant. At the age of six months her family moved to Peachtree City, Georgia where she grew up. Her metalworking shop is in Hogansville, GA where she also works part-time in metal fabrication. As a child Leah struggled with school as dyslexia challenged her and she realized that college was not for her. While at school, she learned to weld and was fascinated by the process of being creative with metal so she decided to go to welding school. It was here that she explored techniques to create art beyond functional welding and realized she had a talent for multi-dimensional forms. Leah's business has grown so much that she is planning to go full-time in the New Year. She says her commissions have taken off this year but her goal is to find a balance between exploring and creating new art forms combining her love of nature. I'm your host, Cleve Gaddis, and today we're delving into the crucial aspects of choosing the right home size and the importance of property surveys. Segment Teaser: Searching for the ideal home can be challenging, especially when it comes to determining the right size for your family. In today's episode, we shine a spotlight on Clearwater Pointe in McDonough, a neighborhood that offers a unique living experience. If you're in the market for a new home, one of the initial questions you'll encounter is, "What size home do I need?" Every family has different needs and preferences, making this a vital decision. We address a listener question from Timothy in Peachtree City, who's house hunting for his family of four. Together, we explore the factors to consider when choosing your future home's size. Cleve also shares valuable insights to guide you through this important decision-making process. When you buy a home, it's crucial to understand the property's boundaries. Imagine closing on your new home and later discovering that the lot lines are different from what you thought, resulting in a smaller backyard. This situation can be disheartening. We explore the necessity of property surveys when purchasing a home and the potential repercussions if this step is overlooked. Alfred from Cumming posed this question, and we'll provide answers and clarification. For six years Ashley and I coordinated the meeting of a group of young men who met weekly during the school year. Some weeks there were four, and others there were sixteen. All between 15 and 18 years of age and all at different stages of maturity. We walked these young men through a variety of discussions, situations, and scenarios and even adapted a five stage growth pyramid for each to understand where they were at in their level of maturity. For these young men we relayed the identification of those stages as Boy Adolescent Man Mentor Patriarch Upon introduction many of the young men in our group presumed that age was the entry point to each stage. Turn 13 and you become an adolescent. Turn 18 and you become a man. One astute young man asked a resonating question around our communal fire pit, “at what age do you become a mentor?” It was akin to asking, “at what year do you become an expert in your field?” In 1964 US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart was providing an opinion on the use of obscenity in the public square in the State of Ohio's case vs. Jacobellis who had been reprimanded for showing what was considered by some to be an obscene movie. Justice Stewart explains, “I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description ["hard-core pornography"], and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it…” We will certainly do our best to layout helpful marks of maturity within a civil society, and yet maturity can be validated in part under the mantra of “I know it when I see it.” My response to the young man asking at what age you scale the stages of manhood? I asked, “have you ever seen a 19 year old boy walking around in a 54 year old body?” He understood a primary principle of maturity: Maturity equals maturity. Age equals age. You can have age without maturity. You can have some maturity without age. You cannot have full maturity without the combination of age and wisdom. Wisdom is a cocktail of time, understanding, trial, error, learning, teaching, consideration and circumspect, humility, confidence, and curiosity. Wisdom gone right is shrewd and helpful. Wisdom corrupted is deception and gaslighting. The secret to wisdom is this…GO PURSUE WISDOM! How do we know what to pursue, or what a wise person, a mature person even looks like? Here are NINE marks of maturation that we can pursue ourselves and begin looking for in others. These marks do not prove full maturity, but simply a pursuit of maturity at some particular mile marker on the highway. First, a maturing person is someone who has written and defined principles (mission, values) for their life. We all like to think that writing things down and defining “purpose” in our lives is good for the self-help section at Barnes and Noble, but in real life we can never find time for that. The maturing person makes time to articulate the things that drive them and the things they value. Our family has a drive to create space and be a light through adventure, wisdom, and time around the table. One of the more sacred spots in our day to day is any table we find ourselves at together whether it be our dinner table in Bluffton, a bleacher seat in Winston-Salem, a tray table in row 31 seat C, D, and E somewhere over the Atlantic, or a restaurant table in Cinque Terre. The table is an indicator for us to limit distractions, share peaks and pits, discuss a wide range of recent events and future plans, and to play 3 rounds of a twitchy card game. It's written, we talk about it, and it has become a habit at this point. If you don't write them down, they do not exist. Second, the maturing person invests a bulk of time into a recurring “thing” (Reps): Distraction has become chaos' tool of choice in our modern battle to fight. Desire is rarely the enemy that keeps us from progressing to expert status. We have a desire to fly planes, learn a language, love yoga, travel to Siberia, or hike the Cascades. Distraction then hijacks desire in mid-flight rendering us aloof and frustrated not being able to achieve that thing we know would satisfy and re-energize. While at the Chick Fil A mothership in Peachtree City, GA we heard a recurring idiom that for a while felt like classic corporate goofiness and then over time was sobered up to a well trained conviction; “Full Time…Best Effort”. It's one thing to “be at work” all day vs. “working all day”. While we are at work all day, distraction begins hovering like sand gnats on a warm May afternoon at a southern coastal ball field. It nips, bites, frustrates, until we either leave, or take measures to battle against. Three hours at work is not the same as working for three straight hours. One gives the allusion of maturity. The other implements boundaries which lead to maturity and exponential value to you and the people you impact. When you mature to give your full time…best effort, choosing not to work in a short series of fits and starts, you are setting the stage for a mass accrual of reps in a given task or skillset providing you a valuable path to expertise and value. Immaturity always welcomes distraction. The third mark of a maturing person reveals a sober judgment and intuition spending time looking at a “thing” from multiple angles. For most of my life I didn't “get” art. People would sit and look, observe, think, contemplate, review, change angles and keep looking. “What are they looking at?”, I would think with disdain and arrogance. Perspective is a hallmark in appreciating great art. Today I would accept an invitation into just about any display of artistic creation. One of my favorite art displays is the small, dark Museo Leonardo Da Vinci. A two minute walk from the infamous Duomo in Florence is a unique museum displaying recreations of da Vinci's drawings. Da Vinci was a prolific illustrator drawing fine details of human anatomy, mechanical machinery, and novel tools. Many of these drawings were never manufactured into tangible instruments. The da Vinci museum displays actual (in some cases life size) creations of da Vinci's drawings like a tank, a flying machine and others. These tools in essence jump off the page into real life and the museum gives you a unique opportunity to look at aa Vinci's mind and work from multiple angles and perspectives. What might have seemed hideous or impractical on paper is now meaningful and unique when built in real life. Maturity is making the time to walk around and see the various angles of a thing not in hopes of proving your opinion, but instead to reformulate your convictions with great understanding. The fourth mark of a maturing person is situational awareness; the ability to “read the room” knowing who is in the room, when to act and how to act. Walk down a terminal in most major airports and he will be nearby, the guy with the bluetooth headset talking as if Nine Inch Nails are playing a live set at the next gate down and he's got to make sure the person on the other end can hear everything he has to say. Your response, “READ THE ROOM”. Solitude is helpful, isolation less so. We (yes, even introverts) live in a communal society with shared spaces. It serves us well to read the room and respond in kind to the dynamics of that room. If people are tired, frustrated, jet lagged, in a hurry, delayed, short-fused and in need of space and peace, probably best not to add volume to that chaos. Read the room. If people are energized, fired up, ready to storm the hill and score the winning touchdown, probably best not to reveal your inner Eeyore. Read the room. There is a time and place for everything and the maturing person is willing to reveal their “true self” in moments where their true self will be invited and welcomed. Read the room. A hallmark of situational awareness is the ALL important SELF-awareness. Spending time discovering the inner workings of yourself will open up a world of insight and aha's as to why you are the way you are, do the things you do, and act the way you act. Maturity in self-awareness never uses what you have discovered as a crutch to excuse preference. “Well, I'm an ‘S' on the DISC so you shouldn't ask me to do that.” Or, “I have no Tenacity on the Working Genius so you can't expect me to have that done so quickly.” Profiles and enneagram numbers are helpful; these are third party tools that give us objective insight into the intangible parts of our personality. As you learn, the mature person asks, “what are the things that I naturally love to contribute, and what are the things that I need to be aware that I am not as prone to so I can push through those areas when needed?” Maturing people realize that Jim Rohn was right, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” In fact, you are likely the average of the five books you read, the five foods you eat, the five songs you listen to, and the five things you spend your money on. A new rhetorical question that we are going to begin adding to our hiring process is this, “if I asked you to setup a dinner with the five people you spend the most time with, would you be excited for me to meet with them?” Life and business necessarily intersect. Who you are out there, is who you will be in here. Run with chaos out there, and you will want to burn the building down here. Run with wisdom out there, and you will want to build up the culture in here. Who are the five people you spend the most time with? Would I enjoy dinner with them? The sixth element of a maturing person is they feel compelled by gratitude to reinvest the wisdom they have received into others. This reinvestment is less about waiting until you have hit a threshold of wisdom to start giving that wisdom away, and more about immediately teaching the wisdom you have to the people you interact with immediately. Did you learn something today? Use it today and teach it today. Seneca, the Roman Philosopher said, “while we teach, we learn”. Benjamin Franklin said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” In just a few minutes, I will involve you in an exercise that will help teach the things I'm learning so that we can all grow and perpetuate the wisdom to our co-workers, partners, families, and friends. The maturing person is always teaching out of the gratitude they have for being taught. The seventh mark of a maturing person are the stress-tests they've endured. Our family loves to hike, to walk along trails in the woods with no distractions and to simply look around and take it all in…to see what is out there and allow our minds to voyage into peaceful places. My son has a bazaar tradition when we are hiking in the woods, if he sees a tree he thinks is dead or dying he will work to “truck the tree”. He'll give it a few pushes casually to see if the tree is vulnerable and off balance; to see if it has some “give”. After a few pushes he then makes a highly scientific judgment call to determine that tree's “truckability”. Can he make that tree fall if he were to deliver a linebacker like form tackle to its trunk? Mis-judge the tree and the tree wins whilst you get an Uber ride to the Orthopaedics office. Judge correctly and you feel like a dominant predator of the woods knocking down trees with your bare shoulders. The maturing person has been pushed, pressed, and had tested through a variety of trials and tests both personally and professionally. It is unreasonable and naive to think that you will live life on Lake Placid, where your waters will always be smooth and your skies will always be blue. That testing is a gift because it breeds and develops endurance. Endurance then works itself into hope, into a light at the end of a tunnel that is opportunity, life, conviction, belief, and satisfaction. It is said that having hope will never disappoint. The maturing person will be aware of their response when they are rejected, or when they win. Notice the maturing person may or may not respond perfectly to rejection or to winning, but they are aware of their response and the impact that response has on themselves and on others around them. Rejection is fertile ground for shame. Brene Brown has been studying shame for decades and describes shame as an “intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging.” Each of us has unique shame triggers, events that happen that open the door for that intensely painful feeling because our flaws have been revealed. You could have just received a stern response, a cross glance, a critique on your work, a roll of the eyes in response to your contribution, or a harsh pushback from a client. Maybe your Dad only calls when he needs something or your Mom still treats you like you were 8 years old. Maturity is not never feeling rejection. Maturity is being aware of how you feel when you are rejected and then intentionally using emotional tools to grow from that rejection instead of self-medicating with rage, anger, return shame, substances, or loneliness. Victory and winning are equally as important. When you win, how do you win? Maturity will always lead with humility, joy, satisfaction, and gratitude. Maturity will never thrive in an environment of arrogance, stand alone pride, gaslighting, and trash talking. Humility is the currency of the wise. On par with self-awareness, Shakespeare “A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.” We are told it is the “foolish things of the world that are used to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” A ninth mark of a maturing person is how they respond to authority, to coaching, and to the less fortunate. The coaches you remember are the coaches that were hard, the ones who demanded more, and who were convinced that you had more to give. Dr. David Crutchley was a professor of mine in graduate school. I studied more for his classes than I did anyone else's in the history of my education. I never scored above a B minus on any exam or paper I turned into him. Frustrated I tried to reason with him as to why I earned higher grades. His response echoed, “I would rather you get a C in my class and walk away having truly learned, than for you to ace my class and to learn nothing.” A life of 5.0's and 10 out of 10's on everything is a life that is ultimately not helpful towards resilience. Karen Arnold, a researcher who followed 81 High School Valedictorians came to an eye-opening conclusion: “Even though most (valedictorians) are strong occupational achievers, the great majority of former high school valedictorians do not appear headed for the very top of adult achievement arenas….Valedictorians aren't likely to be the future's visionaries . . . they typically settle into the system instead of shaking it up.” This is not license to not work hard, to not grow in diligence, and to not give great effort. This is motivation to seek and appreciate hard coaching, serious feedback, and honest insight. Remember, the launching point into a life of wisdom is to simply GO LOOKING FOR IT. If you find someone willing to do the hard, emotionally taxing work of giving you honest feedback, GO SIT WITH THEM and go get wisdom. Wisdom will be the road sign to maturity.
