"Mountainhead" fängt stark an. Get full access to Substack von Ronny und Axel at hausmeisterronny.substack.com/subscribe

It's a little bit of everything this week on Pop Culture Pastor! Dave and Cody are back on their own, digging into the ultimate pop culture grab bag. From the seismic pop culture news of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's engagement (and some ridiculous “what if” wedding scenarios), to the messy Raja Jackson incident in the wrestling world, we cover it all. Then we dive into what we've been watching, reading, and listening to lately—documentaries (Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action and Trainwreck: Storm Area 51), oddball films (Mountainhead), charming series (Nobody Wants This), sports comedies (Stick), nostalgic reboots (Quantum Leap), and even some fresh music discoveries (Joe Keery's Djo and the long-lost When We Were Kings soundtrack).Think of this one like rummaging through a flea market of pop culture: unexpected finds, strange treasures, and conversations you didn't know you needed.https://linktr.ee/PopCulturePastorPod
【聊了什么The What】 HBO 新片Mountainhead是《继承之战》编剧 Jesse Armstrong 的导演初作。 Mountainhead, HBO's new film, marks the directorial debut of Succession writer Jesse Armstrong. This time, he shifts the camera from East Coast media dynasties to West Coast tech titans. The story follows four former friends and tech moguls spending a weekend at a luxury mountain estate in Utah, while the outside world descends into chaos—triggered by political disinformation generated by an AI tool they helped create. From the comfort of their hilltop villa, they debate power, technology, the future of humanity, and how to prolong their own lives—even resisting death by uploading their consciousness. In this episode, we talk about the arrogance and fragility of tech elites, the rise of Effective Accelerationism (e/acc) in Silicon Valley, the political ambitions of the tech world—from the All-In Podcast to Trump's inauguration—and why reality has become more sci-fi than fiction, making it harder than ever for creators to tell these stories. Only a few years separate HBO's Silicon Valley and Mountainhead, but in that short span, the world—and tech—has changed in ways no one could have scripted. 03:39 Our favorite screenwriter turns our Twitter storylines into a movie 08:15 How the four protagonists are “stitched together” from real-life Silicon Valley moguls 15:56 The ideological shift in Silicon Valley: from business logic to religious belief 32:29 Tech elites' thirst for power: “The Cathedral,” “Founder Sovereignty,” and “Luxury Beliefs” 42:30 The Tech Bro dilemma—craving power while dodging responsibility 54:29 The new disguise of power and why we must remain vigilant 【拓展链接 The Links】 小华提到的漫画:“参议院的老板们”——1889 【疲惫红书 CyberRed】 除了播客以外,疲惫娇娃的几个女的在小红书上开了官方账号,我们会不定期发布【疲惫在读】、【疲惫在看】、【疲惫旅行】、【疲惫Vlog】等等更加轻盈、好玩、实验性质的内容。 Apart from the podcast, we have set up an official account on Xiaohongshu. Ramy Youssef (Mountainhead, Number One Happy Family USA, Ramy) is an award-winning comedian, director, and actor. Ramy returns to the Armchair Expert to discuss how shooting Mountainhead was akin to a play, his subway take that everyone is inherently good and evil is just a virus, and why the US Constitution is dope. Ramy and Dax talk about likening his experience making TV to the national integrity crisis, who can throw a Molotov cocktail, and why the best things in life often emerge in spite of us. Ramy explains his initial understanding that at its core Poor Things is a romcom, how to him LeBron is the personification of discipline, and why he wanted to make a cartoon about a Muslim-American family set on and after September 10, 2001.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. Ep. 332: Amy Taubin on Cloud, Tribeca (I Was Born This Way, Happy Birthday, Shadow Scholars), Twin Peaks, Outrageous, plus Mountainhead Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. The summer may have technically begun, but it's not truly the summer without our annual June-July-ish kick-off: a podcast with critic Amy Taubin! Once again she brings a selection of highlights gleaned from the Tribeca, including prize-winners and otherwise: I Was Born This Way (directed by Daniel Junge and Sam Pollard), Natchez (Suzannah Herbert), The Shadow Scholars (Eloise King), Cuerpo Celeste (Nayra Ilic García), Happy Birthday (Sarah Goher), and the delightful Lion King doc Runa Simi (Augusto Zegarra), with my chiming in about The Scout (Paula González-Nasser). But wait, that's not all: Amy also talks about Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cloud (coming to U.S. theaters on July 18); her recent work on Twin Peaks, with a remarkable personal connection to David Lynch's work; and Outrageous, the very resonant TV series about the Mitford sisters. Plus: I ramble a bit about the latest movies from Celine Song, Materialists, and from Danny Boyle, 28 Years Later, as well as Jeremy Strong's feature-film directorial debut, the tech-bro-apocalypse satire Mountainhead. This week Bob and Matt dissect three very different cinematic releases: Wes Anderson's pastel chaos, a deep-sea implosion doc, and a tech bro fever dream masquerading as a movie. ⏱️ Chapter Markers: 00:00 – 17:45 | The Phoenician Scheme Wes is back with a hand grenade. Bob breaks down the “Wes Venn Diagram,” Matt praises the comedic rhythm, and Michael Cera steals the show. Bonus: eyebrow analysis and a Benedict Cumberbatch wig appreciation moment. 17:46 – 32:20 | Titan Sub Disaster (Netflix) Implosions, PlayStation controllers, and corporate delusion. Bob relives learning about the story in an escape room, and Matt explores the horrifying audio build-up to tragedy. An unexpectedly gripping doc with more tension than most action films. 32:21 – 41:44 | Mountainhead (Max) Billionaires with soup spoons, gobbledygook dialogue, and a plot so muddled even subtitles tap out. Bob is out, Matt is… somewhat amused. The guys debate whether it's satire, nonsense, or both—and if Steve Carell can save it. (Spoiler: maybe not.)
(This is an episode from the podcast "On With Kara Swisher”, from from New York Magazine and the Vox Media Podcast Network.) From media moguls to tech billionaires, Oscar-nominated and Emmy award-winning writer, producer and director Jesse Armstrong knows how to tap into the psyche of the rich and powerful. In the “Succession” creator's new HBO movie, “Mountainhead,” a tech-bro poker weekend turns into a life-or-death battle over who will control the future — in both business and the real world. From their isolated lair in Utah, four millionaire/billionaire friends (played by Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef) watch as deepfakes created on one of their platforms lead to massacres, assassinations, and government takeovers around the world. This sparks the friends' imperialistic fantasies and some unfriendly inter-group competition. Kara talks to writer-director Jesse Armstrong about the real-world inspirations for these characters, how tech founders think about their own role in society, and whether the tech oligarchy has replaced legacy media giants like Rupert Murdoch. David T.'s beautiful son Taylor S. Cole is back to discuss Dept. Q, a Scottish take on a Nordic-noir book series that has the good sense not to mess with star Matthew Goode's face. Chemistry in trope-y scenes, why Scandi crime stories often have a submarine, whether the mystery needed so many episodes to solve -- we're talking about all of that AND recommending actually Nordic Nordic-noir TV if you liked Dept. Q. Then we're going Around The Dial with Mountainhead, The Rehearsal, and The Last Of Us S01 before seeing whether Taylor can do his entire The Studio Canon pitch before we lose the light.
