This week we were honored to be joined by another Boston Bruins legend, a man who has dedicated his life to the game of hockey, Mike O”Connell. Mike played over 800 games in the NHL between 1977 and 1990 with the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, and Detroit Red Wings. After his playing days ended, Mike took up coaching and then transitioned to the management side of the game and became the GM of the Boston Bruins in 2000. Currently, Mike is the director of professional player development with the Los Angeles Kings where he has won 2 Stanley Cups. In this interview, we chatted the influence Bobby Orr had on the game, Mike’s decision to play junior hockey in Canada, his playing days and what is was like to play alongside greats like Rick Middleton, Ray Bourque, and Steve Yzerman, being a general manager and the difficult decisions and pressure that comes with the job, the art of making trades and drafting players and finally having the ability to reinvent yourself + much more!
