Sean Maekawa, Professional Golfer and Assistant Men's Golf Coach University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans is a guest on Emily T Gail Talk Story. Professional golfer Sean Maekawa, who grew up in Paauilo, Big Island of Hawaii started to play golf in 1999 at the 9 hole Honokaa Golf Course where he received some encouragement from Alan Texeira. Alan, RIP who lived in Honokaa and was a PGA Professional with Waikoloa Beach Golf and that lead Sean to join the Waikoloa Junior Golf Program. He shares how being involved with the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association and Waikoloa Junior Golf where he met PGA Professional Ross Birch. Ross continued to coach Sean helped him win the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Individual golf titles from 2004-2007 while playing for the Honokaa High School team and the Hawaii High School State Championship in his senior year.. I met Sean through Ross when they were guests on my Emily T Gail Talks Golf Show on espnhawaii.com. It was Sean's first time on the radio. I have enjoyed remaining friends with Sean and his parents and being a long time supporter in spirit of his golf journey. With such stellar high school golf play in Hawaii, Sean earned a golf scholarship to the University of Oregon and played for the Division I Oregon Ducks under PGA Professional Casey Martin. He was a member of the Oregon Ducks Men's Golf Team in the Annual Amer-Ari Division I Invitational Tournaments at Waikoloa Beach Resort that has a reputation as one of the best Division I tournaments in the country for the quality of players and the hospitality shared by Coach Earl and his coaches and the Vulcan golf booster club and Waikoloa Beach Resort. The Oregon Ducks team had some very strong finishes including winning the NCAA in Sean's junior year. After college Sean turned professional and played on the Gateway Tour and other mini tours. He wanted to explore coaching which led to an opportunity to be a volunteer coach with his former college coach Casey Martin for the Oregon Ducks. Sean says he “discovered he enjoyed coaching at college level having been a college player. He wanted to share with others what he has learned being on both sides of the ball”. That led him back to the Big Island where he could be Asst. Professional at Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf under PGA Professional Kevin Ginoza. Kevin had played for the Division II Pac West University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan Golf team and has been an Assistant Coach with his former coach Earl Tamiya along with Troy Tamiya and Sean joined them as well as Assistant Coach. He is grateful to be back home with the opportunity to be a Asst. Golf Coach while raising a family with his wife Ashley. They have two young children Kamden and Aliah. Sean credits the encouragement he has received from mentors, his parents Schoen and Monica and his sister Elisye as he pursued golf as what kept him motivated to follow his dream of a golf career. Waikoloa Beach Resort recently were hosts for their Annual Division II Dennis Rose Invitational Tournament with top NCAA Division II men's and women's golf teams. Dennis Rose, also a mentor for Sean was long time Director of Golf at Waikoloa and president at Waikoloa who passed away at the age of 59 in 2007 after a two year battle with cancer. The men played at Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf and the women played at Hapuna Golf Course. at Mauna Kea Resort. Sean talks about the Dennis Rose Invitational and Vulcan team experiences this year who are ranked in the top 50 Division II teams in the country. That is their best ranking ever and they will be the only Division II team in the The Amer-Ari coming up in February Past winners and participants of the Amer-Ari have included Tiger Woods, Notah Begay, Matt Kucher, Jordan Spieth, Matthew Wolf and many others who have gone on to careers on the PGA TOUR. The Division II Vulcan's Men's team and Coach Earl and Asst Coaches Kevin, Troy and Sean and the team are focused on holding their own. Scott Head, VP Operations Waikoloa Beach Resort is sure they will also be great hosts and add to their reputation as one of the most prestigious and fun Division I Invitational Tournaments in the country. A former Cardinal standout student-athlete and touring golf professional is Stanford’s Knowles Family Director of Men’s Golf. The 2019-20 season marks his 16th on The Farm. Ray qualified for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in 2005. He has played on the Nationwide Tour and other world tours since 1998, achieving 12 top-10 finishes. Conrad played on the same team as Tiger Woods and Notah Begay during his time at Stanford. Ray is a 1997 graduate of Stanford where he earned a bachelor’s degree in public policy. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and received the 2017 Significant Sig Award from the Sigma Chi national fraternity. In 2011, Ray was inducted into the NCGA Hall of Fame.
Episode 370 Steve Burdick is the Executive Director of College Golf Fellowship, a ministry that shares and equips college and pro golfers to be fully devoted followers of Christ. Prior to joining College Golf Fellowship in 2001, Steve was an All-American golfer at the University of Stanford from 1991-95. During his time in college, Steve won a national championship in 1994 and was teammates with PGA Tour players Casey Martin, Notah Begay and Tiger Woods. On this episode of the podcast, we talk to Steve about being teammates with Tiger Woods, winning a national championship at Stanford, living out his faith during a difficult moment in college in 1995, why he decided to walk away from golf and how the death of his Dad helped shape his faith. Notah Begay joins the pod (32:50) to talk about the similarities between Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods, and he reveals whether or not Tiger can hoop. Meanwhile, Sean Zak and Dylan Dethier wrestle with the biggest golf questions of the week, including Rory McIlroy's beguiling game, fan heckling, the newly released PGA Tour schedule, Sergio Garcia having a normal one, and whether or not we are *officially* in the Brooks Era.
In this episode, Peter reflects on the last week's U.S. Senior Open with his big brother David, who was the first tee starter at the championship. Then he catches up with former TOUR pro and current University of Oregon Men's Golf Coach, Casey Martin, and visits the Caddie Corner with Mike O'Connell, reminiscing about their win together at the 2004 U.S. Senior Open.
Conrad Ray (@cardcoachray) is the Director of Men's Golf at Stanford University and if you are a junior golfer, coach one or are the parent of one and they have a lot of promise, a lot of game, and they want to play at the collegiate level you are really going to want to hear what Coach Ray has to say. Not only did he play on an NCAA National Championship team as a student-athlete while attending Stanford, but he also coached the Cardinals to another National Championship. We get into many things but most of it revolves around the college golf experience; how kids can get a scholarship and what it takes, what's expected of them as a student-athlete, the sacrifices and hard work that go into making them productive members of the team and preparing them for the next level in life. Conrad also speaks to the differences in college golf from when he was a student-athlete in the mid-1990s when he played with fellow teammates; Notah Begay and Tiger Woods. We compare that to when he returned in 2004 to be the Men's Head Golf Coach and how both those eras compare to today. Conrad was also nice enough to speak about his recruiting and coaching philosophies and what he and other coaches around the country look for in up and coming junior golfers. This episode is packed with a lot of great information from one of the best college coaches out there. I'm sure everyone listening; whether you're a junior, coach, or parent you're going to learn something and take a lot away from what Conrad has to say. You can follow Coach Conrad Ray on Twitter @CardCoachRay
NBC lead analyst, major champion, and 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger joins the show for the first time (46:45). In a very honest chat, Zinger discusses his true thoughts on Rory's closing struggles, what it's really like taking Johnny Miller's seat in the booth, what it's like being paired with Tiger Woods, and what type of carnage he's hoping for at The PLAYERS Championship. Before Zinger hops on, we breakdown the best Notah Begay x Tiger Woods puns and go through headlines: Tiger arrives at Sawgrass; Molinari is a savage; does it really matter what anyone calls The PLAYERS Championship?
Our guest this week is Casey Martin, Head Coach of the University of Oregon Men's Golf Team. Before leading the Ducks to the National Championship in 2016, Casey won a national championship as a member of the 1994 Stanford Cardinal team that included Notah Begay. We spoke about his days on the PGA Tour, lessons from Tiger that he's shared with his current players, and his thoughts on his landmark case against the PGA Tour nearly 20 years ago. The next Tiger era is officially off and running.

26th AmerAri Invitational Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Waikoloa Beach Resort – Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings’ Course will host the 26th Amer Ari Intercollegiate with top Division I players on Wednesday February 1- Saturday February 4, 2017. The University of Hawaii-Hilo Division II golf team, Coach Earl Tamiya, Asst' Coach Ron Takahashi, a committed group of volunteers and Waikoloa Beach Resort Head PGA Pro Kevin Ginoza and his team are host to this very well run tournament of top Division I teams from across the country. The Amer Ari is considered one of the most popular and competitive intercollegiate tournaments involving most of the Pac 12 and some of the top 10 teams in collegiate golf with certainly some of the up and coming collegiate stars and future PGA Tour Players. Matt Kuchar, Tiger Woods, Notah Begay, Bob May, Jordan Speith are just a few who have played in this event during their collegiate golf careers. The event is free and spectators are welcome. Tee offs at 7:30 am every morning. I suggest getting to the practice range before or after each days round and watching how they practice and prepare. The parking lot overflow from spectators is good indication that people enjoy being around this event. Nice time to enjoy breakfast or lunch at the newly remodeled Mai Grille at the golf clubhouse...

He shot a 73 65 70 76 284 to finish in 15th place. Will mentions that the 18th hole had Tiger's number and was his undoing on 3 of the 4 rounds. Hideki Matsuyama won the event for his fourth win in his last five starts. The other event was a second place finish. Holly asks Todd about his thoughts on Tiger's return. From a performance standpoint it was what Todd expected. He had good and bad days. A top 10 finish would have been a great start. He can head into the holiday break knowing that he has a lot of positives coming from the Bahamas. More than anything for Tiger to be able to hit the reset on his body, mind and emotions. Todd doesn't feel like Tiger is Darth Vader and more like Luke Skywalker. He's becoming more of an every fan player. Todd is being cautiously optimistic as Tiger heads into his Tour schedule. Will talks with Todd about how Tiger moves the ratings needle like no one else. Tiger said that it is a process and has said it many times. If we are expecting Tiger to be in the top 5 at Torey Pines, it's a pretty lofty goal. Todd looks for Tiger to build some momentum in the summer. Holly talks with Todd about Matsuyama's success. Todd said that he can't begin to tell listeners how popular golf is in Japan and for Hideki to be winning like he has been is huge there. Todd recalls that it was crazy the media attention that Ryo Ishikawa garnered when he was just trying to make it on the PGA Tour. But now Matsuyama has power, a great short game. If he can stay healthy he will be a force on the Tour in 2017 and will contend for at least one major championship, and maybe more. In the final segment of this week's hour of intelligent golf talk, Holly and Will welcome Jeff Babineau from Golfweek to the show. Jeff talks about his trip to the Bahamas and how Tiger faired in the tournament. Jeff said that the media turnout was pretty good for a December event that is not sanctioned. Why Pay For Feedback – Episode 068 Why would you ever pay for feedback? Can't you get that for free from most of your fans/listeners/family? I was reading the comments on a blog post the other. As a disclaimer, I rarely do this. Most trolls that comment on blog posts do so anonymously. They are rarely knowledgable about the subject. And they typically offer little constructive criticism. We discussed the trolls in episode 051 “Why I Ignore Podcast Critics”. This particular blog post was in reference to a colleague. The commenter questioned why anyone would ever pay for feedback (coaching) when they could get plenty of it for free. This misguided individual obviously doesn't understand the value of coaching. Believing your listener can give you quality feedback on your podcast is like believing David Ortiz, home run leader of the Boston Red Sox, can get feedback on his hitting from the guy with a Bud Light in his hand sitting three rows up behind the on deck circle. Is Tiger Woods getting advice on his swing from the two duffers sitting beside the 3rd green? I don't think so. Here are five myths about coaching. 1. I've Never Heard Of You Myth: There is no value of an opinion from someone nobody has heard of. Truth: You've never heard of some of the most powerful, well-paid coaches in the world. How about Hank Haney or Sean Foley or Notah Begay? All three have served as a swing coach for professional golfer Tiger Woods. How about Jim Presley or Elnar Diaz? They are the hitting coaches for the Major League Baseball Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore had 211 home runs in 2014. 25 more than the 2nd team. The Major League Baseball Detroit Tigers hit .277 as a team in 2014. Ever heard of Wally Joyner or David Newhan? Both hitting coaches. Would you pay Brett Manning to coach you? Taylor Swift has. Keith Urban and Haley Williams of Paramore have as well. Most people have never heard of Brett Manning. Just because you have never heard of the coach, that does not mean they are not able to offer you valuable input and advice. 2. I Can Do It Myself Myth: I know what I am supposed to do, so I can do it myself. Truth: Your coach can see things you cannot. Business coaches. Quarterback coaches. Vocal coaches. Violin coaches. Writing coaches. Speaking coaches. Coaches are everywhere. Unless you are in the industry, most people have never heard of these coaches. These instructors are well educated and experienced in the profession. They help the greats become even better. 3. Coach Just Wants Money Myth: The coach is only in it for the money. Truth: No coach does it simply for the money. Most every coach loves to teach. They get great pride by seeing their clients succeed. Coaches who coach only for the money rarely last. If clients are not improving and succeeding by using the coach, words gets around. Do you homework on a coach. Find people that have used their services. If the coach has helped others succeed, there is a good chance they can help you as well. 4. Positive Feedback = More Money Myth: The coach will only give you positive feedback, because they want you to come back again and again. Truth: Constructive criticism is really the only way to improve. A Pollyanna view will never get results. A coach that only gives you positive feedback is rarely helping you get better. If you are not getting better using a coach, you should stop using those services. Tiger's swing coach doesn't stand next to Tiger saying, “Great swing. Keep it up.” I can get my nephew to do that for me. If that is the sort of feedback you want, then by all means use your fans and family. If you truly want to improve, hire a coach. When I coach my clients, I typically look for 3 things they are doing right and 3 things they can improve upon. You cannot improve your show by simply removing the bad stuff. You need to replace it with good stuff. Let's find the good stuff, so we can do more of that. That content can replace the areas that need improvement. 5. Who Pays For A Bad Review? Myth: Nobody wants to pay to hear they are horrible. Truth: Sometimes the truth hurts, but it is necessary. If you want to improve, you need to know where the rough spots are. You are not paying for a bad review. You are paying for the truth. If you don't want to know if you look fat in those jeans, don't ask. However, if you are truly concerned about your look, and you don't want to go out of the house wearing a bad Christmas sweater, find someone who will tell you the truth. A good coach will give you an honest assessment of your show. Someone who has worked with various shows over many years will know the pieces that make a successful show. That coach can help you implement ideas and tactics to reach your goals. Nothing beats the experience of a winner. A good coach is a powerful tool for you. Most people don't know what they don't know. A solid coach can help you identify areas that will help you propel forward. Some people are not comfortable jumping headfirst into the coaching pool. It is a big step. Maybe that is you. If you would like to dip your toe in water, Dave Jackson and I do a show together called “The Podcast Review Show”. Take a listen to the show to see how our coaching styles differ. You can hear how we both work with our coaching clients. You can also get details about getting your show reviewed. Whether you use one of us or another coach, the important part is that you get some objective feedback to help you improve. Find someone with experience to mentor you through your creative process. You will be amazed at the progress you make with your art. I'd love to help you with your podcast. Post any questions or comments you might have, or e-mail me at Erik@PodcastTalentCoach.com.
