This week, Jun and Daniel sit down for a very special, albeit bittersweet, episode disguised as a fake media review of the movie Decision to Leave. After five beautiful and transformative years of living in South Korea, Daniel makes the official announcement: his family is packing up and moving back to the United States this summer. The hosts spend the episode reflecting on Daniel's incredible five-year journey from a temporary visitor to a seasoned local. They discuss the logical factors driving the move (specifically, navigating the education system as their kids approach middle school), Daniel's evolution from being terrified of the Korean bus system to finding peace in the culture, and why maintaining a "temporary visitor mentality" for five years remains his biggest regret. Daniel also shares his most cherished memory of experiencing true, spontaneous neighborhood Jeong over convenience store ice cream. If you're interested in why Jun's lack of an "American fantasy" makes him feel more Korean than his peers, what Daniel's retirement plans in Busan might look like, or the ultimate fate of the Korean American Podcast once Daniel crosses the Pacific, this episode is a must-listen. Finally, the guys announce their plan to donate all their accumulated Patreon and YouTube earnings to a good cause, and they need your help deciding where it should go!As a reminder, we publish our episodes bi-weekly from Seoul, South Korea.

As South Korea's birth rates continue to decline, reporter JiHye Jeong highlights the rising tide of young feminists who are staging a strike against patriarchy. Despite relentless cultural and political backlash, the surge in South Korea's women's resistance movements - from the 2015 feminist 'reboot' to 'escape the corset' and 4B - offers a radical response to the misogynistic forces that compel women into marriage and motherhood. Highlights include: How strong cultural expectations in South Korea pressure women toward marriage, motherhood, and male approval from an early age, How women's high educational achievement contrasts sharply with persistent gender inequality in pay and leadership roles; How the 2015–2018 feminist 'reboot' emerged and was fueled by events like the Gangnam Station murder and #MeToo; How spy cams in public and private spaces and the widespread distribution of these materials combined with weak government responses fueled feminist anger and 'my life is not your porn' protests; How despite intense political and media backlash, there is a dramatic rise in women-led resistance movements like 'escape the corset', which challenge both the outward corset of beauty norms and the inner corset of gendered behavioral expectations, and the 4B movement, which represents a radical rejection of dating, marriage, sex, and childbirth under patriarchy; How the ideal of a normal, desirable life centered on motherhood fuels South Korea's growing IVF industry and makes critical media coverage of the industry nonexistent; How media narratives frame low birth rates as an economic issue rather than a gender inequality problem; What JiHye's upcoming film, No-Birth Generation, reveals about a growing generation of women rejecting patriarchal life paths and pushing for greater autonomy in their lives. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings.  Hosted by Nandita Bajaj and Alan Ware. This week, Jun and Daniel catch up on their busy lives. Jun rants about his tech startup's obsession with AI efficiency over actual value, sparking a deep dive into why the Korean mindset fixates on perfecting "methodology" and process rather than focusing on the big picture. Meanwhile, Daniel navigates his first Korean elementary school Iphaksik (entrance ceremony), observing everything from a surprisingly sobering speech by the principal to the painstakingly meticulous cultural requirement of labeling every single colored pencil with a name sticker. If you're interested in why Daniel's midnight comfort food has evolved into a bizarre "Spam Dubu Kimchi" hybrid, the game-theory brilliance behind Korea's shared traffic accident liability rules (where it's rarely 100-to-0), or why K-Pop idols are ironically wearing retro floral "Kimjang vests," this episode has it all. We also review BTS's massive, city-stopping comeback performance at Gwanghwamun Palace, marvel at Apple's genius Korean pun for their new M5 chip, and unpack a listener's email that leads to Daniel's realization that Pangyo might be the absolute worst place in Korea to experience true community and "Jeong."As a reminder, we publish our episodes bi-weekly from Seoul, South Korea. Scaling Theory
#29 – Albert-Laszlo Barabasi: The Hidden Order of Networks

Welcome back to Scaling Theory. My guest today is Albert-László Barabási, Professor of Network Science at Northeastern University and one of the most cited scientists alive with over 320 000 citations. His books include Linked, The Formula, and Network Science. In 1999, Albert-László Barabási published a paper that changed how we understand networks. The finding was this: real-world networks are not random. They are dominated by hubs. A few nodes collect most of the links, and they do so because they already have them. In this episode, he explains the details of what he actually found. We then move to the scaling of networks, and the temptation to control them. We conclude with a discussion about art, ballet dancers, architecture, and what mapping careers across disciplines reveals about how networks really work. You can follow me on X (@ProfSchrepel) and BlueSky (@ProfSchrepel).References:➝ PapersBarabási, A.-L. & Albert, R. In 2015, the media became obsessed with one man's attempts to grow tea in the Scottish Highlands.  The BBC profiled him on the One Show. Radio reporters flocked to interview him. Even the Chinese national news agency reported his work.  Tam O'Braan (as he was then known) was the first to ever sell Scottish tea, and the press went wild.  Fornum and Mason bought his leaves. The Dorchester created a new Scottish tea-tasting menu. Barack Obama reportedly tried his tea, and the Queen loved it. Tam's business started bringing in hundreds of thousands of pounds. K-Pop Fandom: Performing Deokhu from the 1990s to Today (U Michigan Press, 2026) insists that K-pop fan practices and activities constitute a central productive force, shaping not only K-pop's explosive global popularity, but also K-pop's cultural impacts, politics, and horizons of possibility. Over the past three decades, the K-pop fandom and its activities have expanded, intensified, and diversified along myriad dimensions, assuming novel social, technological, and economic forms, some of which are unique to K-pop, and some of which reflect broader cultural and industrial logics of globalized mass entertainment culture. Areum Jeong argues that K-pop fans, in performing deokhu—a Korean term connoting an “avid fan”—perform a materialization of affective labor that also seeks to produce good relationships between asymmetrically positioned actors in the K-pop ecosystem. Through an autoethnography of becoming a K-pop deokhu, Jeong connects their experiences to generations of K-pop fans, showing simultaneously how fandom practices have shifted over time and the intricacies of fan labor participation. This personal connection paved the way for participant-observation and co-performer witnessing methodologies in the study, which crucially allowed for collaborating with fans whose communal pursuits have been stigmatized by dominant discourses that denigrate their activities as solely addictive, uncritical, and wasteful. Jeong's genre-spanning corpus of fan activities and analyzing its contexts and contents represents an important contribution to the making of a fan archive that is also an archive of affective labor. However, the region's dynamic genetic history has been emerging only recently from archaeogenomic studies. The conversation moves to a visit to a US Army base for Halloween, which sparks a debate about cultural differences in fairness and connections highlighted by a specific incident involving a pizza order. Daniel also vents about his frustration with household items constantly breaking in Korea, leading to a broader discussion on consumerism, manufacturing quality, and the "fast fashion" mindset that permeates daily life.If you're interested in hearing a deep dive into why Americans identify so strongly with their driver's licenses compared to Korea's centralized resident ID system, or the sociological flip where Americans trust their neighbors but distrust the government while Koreans generally feel the opposite, this episode is for you. We also discuss the intense fitness culture of HYROX, differing attitudes toward pregnancy and activity, the reality of job stability and layoffs in the AI era, and Daniel's realization that after four years, he finally feels completely settled and comfortable living in Korea. As a reminder, we publish our episodes bi-weekly from Seoul, South Korea. I talk about the study's methods and what it all means, and Sarah grounds it in her deep practical experience with herding dogs. Sarah has been on the podcast so many times that she hardly needs an introduction but for new listeners, she is an internationally known dog behavior consultant and speaker. You can learn more about her at sarahstremming.com and I encourage you to check out her podcast, cog dog radio, where this episode is being jointly released. On a personal note I want to let you all know that while I haven't been releasing episodes, this podcast has been very much on my mind. Consider this the prequel to upcoming episodes on the clinical uses of ablative laser resurfacing, non-ablative laser resurfacing, light and energy based devices.  By understanding the language and core scientific concepts of lasers, we hope to make you a safer and more educated laser provider!   Corrections/Clarifications: - Blood vessels are lined by endothelium (not epithelium) - The skin registers pain from heat at 45C, but may occur between 43-44C with variability based on the time of exposure and area of exposure (I stated it occurs at 42C) https://www.cardinalhealth.com/content/dam/corp/web/documents/whitepaper/cardinal-health-localized-temperature-therapy%20White%20Paper.pdf - The exact number varies by source, but waters absorbs the erbium 2940nm wavelength 10-20 times more efficiently than it absorbs the CO2 10,600nm wavelength (I said 30 times) - Clarification:  Eyelid skin is thinner closer to the lashes and on the medial aspect of the eyelid as compared to skin further from the lashes and the lateral aspect of the eyelid.  A study in Korean skin by Hwang et al found the thickest part of the eyelid to be just below the eyebrow (1.127 +/- 238um) with the thinnest skin near the ciliary margin 320 +/- 49um).  Jeong et al found that epidermal thickness is similar between genders while men had thicker reticular dermis than women and skin thickness was not correlated with BMI. - The UV wavelengths range from 100nm - 400nm.  UVC: 100nm - 280nm; UVB: 280nm-315nm; UVA: 315-400.  (I used single wavelength numbers rather than a range for ease of explanation).   Citations for skin thickness: Full thickness punch biopsies from cadaver heads processed with paraffin-embedded slides: Karan Chopra, Daniel Calva, Michael Sosin, Kashyap Komarraju Tadisina, Abhishake Banda, Carla De La Cruz, Muhammad R. It's Monday, September 22nd, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus South Korean pastor has disappeared A week after Pastor Son Hyun-bo from Busan Segyeoro Church in South Korea was arrested for violating public election laws, little information has been made public about his well-being or whereabouts, reports International Christian Concern. Pastor Son, who was arrested on September 8th, is facing the charges in part for allegedly interviewing an election candidate, Jeong Seung-yoon, during a church service and uploading a video of the conversation to social media. He also faces allegations of holding a “prayer service for victory” at Jeong's campaign office and stating, “We must vote for the right-wing candidate and truly establish God's kingdom.” Pastor Son has been active in contending against government overreach, including serving as a leader of the “Save Korea” group, which campaigns against the current left-leaning South Korean President Lee Myung, prime minister, and Democratic Party, who are in power. The outcry against Pastor Son's arrest has been strong. One representative stated openly that, “Pastor Son's arrest is not about an individual but a suppression of all religious figures.” Charlie Kirk's memorial pointed the world to Christ I felt compelled to attend Charlie Kirk's memorial at State Farm Arena in Phoenix, Arizona yesterday. (You can watch it here) So, on Friday and Saturday, my bride, Amy, and I drove 15 hours over two days from San Antonio, Texas with our three children – Honor, age 15, Mercy, age 13, and Valor, age 10 – to celebrate his life and grieve his death at the hands of an assassin's bullet on September 10th at Utah Valley University. Reportedly, 300,000 people from across America came by car and plane. Our family sat in the State Farm Arena which held 63,400 people. Next door, the Desert Diamond Arena held an additional 20,000 people who watched big video screens. Beginning with Christian worship led by Brandon Lake, Chris Tomlin, Phil Wickham, as well as Cody and Kari Carnes, it was a deeply moving experience as speaker after speaker echoed Charlie Kirk's call to come to Christ. Benny Johnson came to faith in Christ through Charlie Kirk Benny Johnson, a conservative influencer, was quite candid. JOHNSON: “When Charlie first met me, I was a degenerate loser. I was addicted to alcohol. I had no wife, I had no kids. I had nothing going for me. After 10 years of work with Charlie Kirk, after his witnessing to my life, I have become a Christ-centered man. I am happily married to the woman of my dreams, sitting right there with our youngest son, who just turned eight months.” He framed the assassination of Charlie Kirk in light of the truth of Genesis 50:20. JOHNSON: “What man intends for evil. God intends for good. Evil thought that there would be a funeral today. God has created a revival right here in this house right now.” (applause) Indeed, through the 3,200 chapters of Turning Point USA not only are more college students equipped with the truth, but many are coming to Christ. Frank Turek: Why Charlie Kirk is in Heaven Frank Turek is a Christian apologist who mentored Charlie with the best answers to tough questions about Christianity.  TUREK: “I want you to know that Charlie right now is in Heaven, not because he was a great husband and father. Not because he saved millions of kids out of darkness on college campuses.  Not because he changed minds and chased votes to save the country. Not because he sacrificed himself for his savior. Charlie Kirk is in Heaven because his Savior sacrificed himself for Charlie Kirk.” Tucker Carlson: “The only real solution is Jesus.” Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson explained what made Charlie Kirk unique. CARLSON: “The main thing about Charlie and his message, he was bringing the Gospel to the country. He was doing the thing that the people in charge hate most, which is calling for them to repent. “So how is Charlie's message different? Charlie was a political person who was deeply interested in coalition building and in getting the right people in office because he knew that vast improvements are possible politically. But he also knew that politics is not the final answer. It can't answer the deepest questions, actually. The only real solution is Jesus.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted Charlie's boldness and affirmation of marriage Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted Charlie Kirk's boldness. RUBIO: “Charlie Kirk was bold. He actively sought out to engage --peacefully, respectfully -- those who he disagreed with. As recently as two days ago, we learned of one of the hosts on CNN, who said that one of the messages he had gotten just a few days before Charlie's passing, was from him, inviting him to dialogue. “And he did this on campuses. He did this on podcasts. He did this on radio shows. He did this on television shows. Time and again, he sought to engage those he disagreed with because he understood that we were not created to isolate ourselves from one another, but to engage. “The irony in all this is that what our nation needs is the ability to discuss our differences openly, honestly, peacefully, respectfully. And Charlie Kirk did that more than anyone alive in America today is doing. This was the mission and work of Charlie Kirk.” And Secretary of State Rubio appreciated Charlie's affirmation of marriage and family to young people. RUBIO: “Understand where we are still today. In many places where young Americans are actively told that everything that they were taught, that all the foundations that made our society and our civilization so grand, they were all wrong. They were all evil, that marriage is oppressive, that children are a burden, that America is a source of evil, not of good, in the world. “And here was this voice that inspired a movement in which young Americans were told that is not true, the highest calling we are called to is to be in a successful marriage and to raise productive children.” War Secretary Hegseth: “Live worthy of Charlie Kirk's sacrifice and put Christ at the center” War Secretary Pete Hegseth explained that Charlie Kirk used the gift of persuasion on college campuses. HEGSETH: “Charlie waged war, not with a weapon, but with a tent, a microphone, his mind, and the truth. And the gates of hell could not prevail against him.” (Matthew 16:17-19) Secretary Hegseth spoke of Christian revival. HEGSETH: “Charlie started a political movement, but unleashed a spiritual revival. My pastor texted me the day after that horrific event and said, ‘Pete, the devil overplayed his hand.' Charlie started with liberty, but ended up lighting our country on fire for Christ. He started Turning Point USA, but this moment is the turning point for the USA.” And Secretary Hegseth gave America a charge in light of Charlie Kirk's Christian legacy. HEGSETH:  “Charlie Kirk was a citizen who had the biblical heart of a soldier of the faith, who put on every single day the full armor of God (Ephesians 6) with a smile as the Scriptures tell all Christ followers to do. Charlie Kirk:  a warrior for country, a warrior for Christ. He ran the race. He finished the fight. Now, it's our turn. My charge to all of you: Live worthy of Charlie Kirk's sacrifice and put Christ at the center of your life as he advocated for giving his.” Colossians 1:10 says, “Live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” Donald Trump, Jr. compared Charlie Kirk's martyrdom with Stephen Donald Trump, Jr.  compared the martyrdom of Stephen with the martyrdom of Charlie Kirk. TRUMP JR: “Last week, Charlie joined a long line of courageous men and women who were martyred for what they believe. According to the book of Acts, the first martyr in the early Christian church was Stephen who was stoned to death. And as Stephen was being killed, he said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing, standing, at the right hand of God.' “There are many times in the Bible where Jesus is seated at the right hand of God, but this is the only time he's seen standing. And while the Bible isn't explicit about this, I like to think Jesus was standing to welcome Stephen, the courageous martyr into Heaven. Today. that gives me great comfort because 11 days ago, as a cowardly assassin crawled on his stomach to end Charlie's life on Earth, I'm betting Charlie saw the son of God standing tall to welcome him home.” Vice President J.D. Vance admired Charlie Kirk's courage Vice President J.D. Vance shared that he's been personally emboldened to share his faith more since Kirk's assassination. VANCE: “You know, I was telling somebody backstage that I always felt a little uncomfortable talking about my faith in public as much as I loved the Lord and as much it was an important part of my life. I have talked more about Jesus Christ in the past two weeks than I have my entire time in public life.” (cheers) Vice President Vance is upset that some on the Left actually cheered Charlie Kirk's death. VANCE: “He was taken from us by those who despise the virtues that actually made our civilization great to begin with: dialogue, truth, seeking family and faith. In the wake of his death, we have seen some of the very worst parts of humanity. We have watched people slander him. We have watched people justify his murder and celebrate his death.” And Vice President Vance admired Charlie Kirk's courage. VANCE: “It is better to face a gunman than to live your life afraid to speak the truth. It is better to be persecuted for your faith than to deny the kingship of Christ. It is better to die a young man in this world than to sell your soul for an easy life with no purpose, no risk, no love, and no truth.” Joshua 1:9 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Erika Kirk forgave her husband's killer And finally, Erika Kirk, Charlie's widow, who will now serve as the CEO of Turning Point USA, said something remarkable that brought all of us to our feet. ERIKA KIRK:  “On the cross, our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.'  (Luke 23:34) “That man, [Tyler Robinson], I forgive him. (applause as she wept) I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it's what Charlie would do. The answer to hate is not hate. The answer, we know from the Gospel, is love, always love. Love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.” Ephesians 4:32 commands, “Forgive one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, September 22nd, in the year of our Lord 2025. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com). Are You Trading Your Health for Your Hustle? I thought I had to grind nonstop to win, but what if taking care of yourself is actually the key to achieving more? In this conversation with Michelle Bang, we unpack why “self-care” isn't just a buzzword—it's a non-negotiable if you want to live well while you climb. Michelle's journey from landing in the emergency room at the height of her success to rediscovering ancient Korean wellness practices is a wake-up call for anyone who thinks they'll get around to health “later.” Michelle breaks down why something as simple as walking after dinner can transform your energy, why fermented foods like kimchi are more than trendy side dishes, and why traditional Korean bathhouses have been quietly reducing heart attacks for generations. We talk about healthspan—not just how long you live, but how well you live—and how embracing practices like daily movement, mindful nourishment, and building community can give you back the edge you need without burning out your body. She shares how she went from ignoring her gut health and running on fumes to reclaiming her vitality by reconnecting with the wisdom she grew up with in Korea and Hong Kong. It's a reminder that no level of achievement is worth trading your health for, and taking small, consistent steps now will let you actually enjoy the life you're building. I challenge you today: Audit your well-being while you're chasing your dreams. Could taking better care of yourself actually help you climb higher? You are the one person you're going to spend your entire life with—take care of you. Key Takeaways: Why self-care is essential, not optional, for high achievers. How daily walks can improve digestion, reduce glucose spikes, and enhance creativity. The gut-brain connection and why fermented foods matter. The impact of “healthspan” versus just living longer. How traditional Korean practices like “jjimjilbang” and the cultural value of “Jeong” can be applied to your life now. If this hits you where you're at right now, share this episode with someone who needs the reminder, and let's start taking care of the one person who's with us for life: ourselves.
