Tune in as Arthur's buddy Anna hops back onto the program for a deep dive into Don't Worry Darling, the 2022 psychological thriller that had been swamped in a notorious wave of media frenzy (remember the spit mystery, anyone?). But once you dig past the Hollywood hubbub, what do you get with this mindfuck-lite trip through a 1950s desert-set company town whose vision of idyllic suburbia just may be hiding dark secrets beneath the surface? Along with unpacking all of that on this episode, the discussion covers rom-com chatter that ranges from Anna's Isn't It Romantic-related story to the hosts' shared take that Set It Up is enjoyable enough while being overrated, Anna's numerous imitations of Harry Styles's “our life together” line, Arthur's hatred for the Wicked trailer, and interesting material from both the spec script and the revised script that had ultimately been left out of DWD (perhaps to its detriment). Directed by Olivia Wilde, Don't Worry Darling stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde, KiKi Layne, Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll, Sydney Chandler, Kate Berlant, Asif Ali, Douglas Smith, Timothy Simons, Ari'el Stachel, Steve Berg, and Dita Von Teese. It's been nearly a year since John Early released his first stand-up special, Max's ‘Now More Than Ever.' But it's only now that he's gotten the chance to talk about the go-for-broke special in-depth, with any chance at promotion waylaid by last summer and fall's back-to-back strikes. And the comedian, best known for his work on ‘Search Party,' ‘30 Rock,' and with collaborator Kate Berlant, is relishing his overdue moment in the spotlight. In this episode of The Last Laugh podcast—Early's second appearance on the show, following his 2022 visit with Berlant—he opens up about the genesis of his Emmys category-breaking special, including how he sees himself as less in step with his fellow campaigning comics and more in the mold of performers like Bette Midler.Plus, Matt and Allegra take a look at John Early's Emmy competition in the Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded) category and share their thoughts on who else deserves some love over the same old contenders.Follow John Early on Twitter @bejohnce and Instagram @bejohnceFollow Matt Wilstein on Threads @mattwilsteinFollow Allegra Frank on Twitter @LegsFrankFollow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpod and Threads @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. How do dreams intrude upon our Psyche, our roles in others' lives, and our societal identities?   "Dream Scenario" is a thought-provoking new film that explores the uncanny power of the collective unconscious to shape culture and be shaped by it. In the movie, Nicholas Cage's character Paul mysteriously starts appearing in others' dreams across the globe. He grapples with the fear of being randomly celebrated by the collective and later demonized. Kate Berlant's role in the film and insights into Jungian analysis and dream interpretation launch our conversation into the growing presence of Jung's insights in art and film. We explore the effect of instant and unwarranted celebrity through social media and the power of archetypal roles to change the actor and activate the collective. Kate reveals her personal connection to analytical psychology and the path her inner work has taken her.    Prepare to discover… who explores the depths of dreams and societal perceptions through the lens of cinema, when a film and its thematic discussions intersect with contemporary Jungian perspectives; how art, personal experiences, and the unconscious contribute to our understanding of identity and celebrity; what insights into the nature of dreams, fame, and the Self can be gleaned from the synthesis of film narrative and psychoanalytical insights; where the boundaries between personal identity and public persona blur; whether dreams serve merely as reflections of our Psyche or as vehicles for collective forces; which Jungian concepts illuminate the complex interplay between our inner lives and persona; why the exploration of dreams, both literal and metaphorical, is crucial to understanding our roles in the world and the narratives we construct about ourselves and others…and so much more.   FIND THE DREAM WE ANALYZE HERE: https://thisjungianlife.com/kate_berlant/  Try new stuff Learn to interpret dreams: https://thisjungianlife.com/join-dream-school/   Support us on Patreon (keep us free of corporate influence): https://www.patreon.com/ThisJungianLife Share your dream with us: https://thisjungianlife.com/share-your-dream/ Suggest a podcast topic: https://thisjungianlife.com/podcast-form-topics/    Get some TJL merch: https://www.zazzle.com/store/thisjungianlife/products Talk to Us: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q8IG87DsnQ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisjungianlifepodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/ThisJungianLife Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThisJungianLife/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thisjungianlife/

In Comedy Book:: How Comedy Conquered Culture–and the Magic That Makes It Work (FSG, 2023), Jesse David Fox—the country's most definitive voice in comedy criticism and someone who, in his own words, enjoys comedy “maybe more than anyone on this planet”—tackles everything you need to know about comedy, an art form that has been under-considered throughout its history, even as it has ascended as a cultural force. Weaving together history and analysis, Fox unravels the genre's political legacy through an ode to Jon Stewart, interrogates the divide between highbrow and lowbrow via Adam Sandler, and unpacks how marginalized comics create spaces for their communities. Along the way, Fox covers topics ranging from comedy in the age of political correctness and Will Smith's slap, to the right wing's relationship with comedy, to comedy's ability to heal in the wake of tragedy. With memorable cameos from Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney, Ali Wong, Kate Berlant, and countless others, Comedy Book is an eye-opening education in how to engage with our most omnipresent art form, a riotous history of American pop culture, and a love letter to laughter. Sociologist and writer Kathryn Jezer-Mortonjoins Sarah and Miranda to talk about the intersection of motherhood and what she calls “technological storytelling,” or, the way we construct our identities in the age of social media. We talk about her recent piece on the “core memories” trend as a microcosm of our desire to control our kids' perception of childhood, why we imitate the visual language of influencers and brands in our personal content, and if doing so influences the way we understand the meaning of our lives and our children's lives. Also discussed: Reservation Dogs, what happens when teens doodle, and whether or not Michel Foucault would have a special interest in the parenting advice of Dr. Becky.  LINKS:  KJM's newsletter, Brooding, via The Cut KJM on Ballerina Farm & Trad Wife Content Poog with Kate Berlant and Jacqueline Novak John Early Max Special Reservation Dogs, on FX / Hulu How To Be A Family by Dan Kois Join our Patreon!

In September, The New Yorker published an article by Clare Malone titled “Hasan Minhaj's Emotional Truths,” fact-checking moments from the comedian's stand up specials. The article reportedly cost Minhaj the hosting gig for The Daily Show, and Minhaj posted a lengthy Youtube video responding to its claims. The New Yorker has stood behind its story, even after Minhaj called it misleading. The scandal, which has been covered by almost every major news outlet, brings into question what audiences expect from comedians — especially ones who do Jon-Stewart-style political commentary. This week, Brooke speaks to Jesse David Fox, author of Comedy Book: How Comedy Conquered Culture and the Magic That Makes It Work, about why the saga provoked such a strong reaction. Plus, Fox explains the changing role of truth in comedy: from the authentic acts of Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, to the vulnerability of Tig Notaro. Fox also notes that the fall from grace of Louis C.K., who pre-#MeToo was often proclaimed the "most honest" comedian, informs the rise of the hyper-performative, absurdist comedy of John Early and Kate Berlant.

In the world of feelings, there are winners and losers, and somebody has to be the judge. World-renowned, self-proclaimed couples therapist Dr? Sheila invites you to sit in on her private sessions with clients. (For legal reasons, Dr? must be said in the form of a question.) Each week, a new couple…and a new puzzle to crack. You'll get to hear, and benefit from, many of her famous techniques as she counsels patients on overcoming disagreements, dealing with an overstepping mother-in-law, navigating open relationships, and much more. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show, because the best way to feel better about yourself is to compare your problems to the problems of others. “Say More” features guests including Kate Berlant, Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, Ilana Glazer, Abbi Jacobson, Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz, Jessica St. Clair, Lennon Parham, Paula Pell, Janine Brito, Jason Mantzoukas, Peter Grosz, Jean Villepique, Stephnie Weir, John Lutz, Fred Armisen, Rachel Dratch, Chris Parnell and Ana Gasteyer, and stars Amy Poehler as Dr? Sheila. Say More with Dr? Sheila premieres Thursday, September 21, 2023. Listen to and follow Say More with Dr? Sheila, an Audacy production, on the Audacy app or wherever you get your podcasts. Mike lost his mind laughing at Kate Berlant's new comedy special “Cinnamon in the Wind.”  So he dropped her a line and asked her to discuss it on the podcast. Mike and Kate discuss working with director Bo Burnham, the looseness of the special, and how the special almost didn't come out. They discuss Kate's solo show “Kate” which was an off-Broadway sensation and is now heading to London at the exact same time that Mike brings “The Old Man & The Pool." They talk about Kate's comedy special with John Early called “Would It Kill You To Laugh?” that was just nominated for an Emmy. They discuss how Kate has always been suspicious of “cool” people but now- between her three hit shows and appearing in movies by Quentin Tarantino and Boots Riley- she may have become one of them. Please consider donating to DIGDEEP
