How many elite sportsmen know their way round a modular synthesiser?Steve Davis was the first modern star of snooker. He dominated the game in the 1980s, winning six world titles, appearing in 8 of the 9 finals between 1981 and 1989. He was ranked number one in the world for seven consecutive years, posted the first ever 147 maximum break in official competition, and was easily (Alex Higgins hipsters aside) established as the best player ever to play the game by the end of that decade. As well as being the most successful player at that point, he was also the first snooker player to do product endorsements, and fully participate in the emerging business of sports entertainment, guided by the legendary manager and promoter Barry Hearn. What brings him to the Not A Diving Podcast is his second career as a DJ and member of The Utopia Strong, an experimental band in which he plays modular synth. That's a late-career curve ball if ever there was one. But since he's also been President of the British Chess Federation and competed in serious poker tournaments, it's perhaps not as much of a surprise as it might be.I was incredibly excited to talk to Steve, and he didn't disappoint... the first NDP guest to have appeared on I'm A Celebrity is always going to be a good episode isn't it?If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Turn it up to eleven! Weston talked about recording rock guitars, playing movies and video games in the studio while recording, committing through an analog console eq on the way into Pro Tools, and dialing in the perfect kick drum sound with Peavey. My guest today is Weston Wellman an artist engineer and music producer in Nashville TN. “I like to record bands and play music. So if you want your band recorded or enjoy listening to music, consider me an option for one, or both of those things. The louder, the weirder, the crazier, the better.” I actually met Weston through Instagram in 2021 when I got my Behringer Model D analog synth (modeled after Moog) and was so into it that I was posting and browsing IG videos of synths. Weston was also sharing some killer sounds with his synths, pedals, and cassette four-track, and making killer sounding heavy records with his band Noise Relay. It also turns out that we are connected both through Nashville and Mike Purcell over at County Q studio. Mike was actually the very first guest back on episode RSR001 so how cool is that? I'm psyched to talk to Weston today about making fantastic sounding heavy rock records with his bands Noise Relay and Sleepercab, creating wild and weird sound in the studio using guitar pedals, synths, and whatever else sounds cool. Born in São Paulo/Brazil, place where Osclighter was resident on the mains underground clubs such as Aloca and Lov.e club, he was influenced by Hardcore, style that led him to the music as bass player and hereafter introducing him to electronic music early on 2000's. Modular Synths lovers, he drinks a lot of this inexhaustible sound creative source in search of depth and sonic textures with the word "limitation" out of his vocabulary. Ahead of his record label "Point of Boom" as its artistic representation he can show us exactly his particular way of understanding and making music. On this period, Osclighter already passed by clubs around the world as Florida 135, Fabrik, Under Club, Baum, Radio Berlin, Clash Club, Poema Club and presenting some of yours productions on labels as Labrynth, Plastic Records, Did Records, Naked Lunch and others.

Two artists pushing back against the tyranny of the machine in electronic music – capturing inputs and processing outputs in ways that rely less directly on spending face time with the laptop screen. Alex White talks about Nadir, his noise collaboration with Ben Byrne, which rejects dark, power noise in favour of a light and bright counterpoint; and jazz musician Jacques Emery discusses the wide range of electronic output on his Sounds Are Sounds label, all of which favour art over craft, and – much like jazz – focus on a constant refinement of improvisational practice.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
