THE SIGN OF 4 remains the most controversial project I've both produced & played on. PAT METHENY, DEREK BAILEY, PAUL WERTICO, and I met up in December of '96 to record some pretty wild improvisations - both live and in the studio - and it's one of the most extreme bits of music-making of my career. My pals at MakeWeridMusic, Andre Cholmondeley and Anthony Garone help me break down the highs and the lows of this triple-disc epic, as we look back over the 25 years since TSo4's release. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that Björk has elevated the music video to an art form. She was experimenting with AR filters before Instagram. She was making robots fall in love before Westworld. And as I mentioned in the last episode, one of her music videos was specifically commissioned by a modern art museum. In this episode Isobel (creator of the Björk fan page @mynameisobelpage) and I will talk about ten videos you should watch — or rewatch — and why. I also had some listeners reach out about their favorite music videos, and I included three of them. They have some great analysis that I want you to hear. And by the end of the episode, you'll see how Björk made the music video... an art form. Enjoying Bjork Unravelled? Elle Shimada and Abbey Howlett are multi-hyphenate musicians, producers, curators, longtime collaborators and much more. They both come from tremendously interesting backgrounds and found each other within Melbourne's flourishing music community. We caught up to both of them during their Japan tour thanks to the homie, Aaron Choulai. Together, Abbey and Elle, are third of the Elle Shimada Collective, a 6-piece band. Outside of that they both have separate projects and are also working on a new collaborative project. In this recording we hear an early version of a track they're working on and share some music already available online. We also get into a lot of other discussions such as Melbournes music scene and operating as women in that community, Australian artists emerging within the the global music space, defining music with genre titles, our favorite Bjork albums, why Aaron Choulai is so awesome, and weird music that's cool. Elle Shimada and Abbey Howlett are incredible. Check them out on Instagram and give them all the likes. instagram.com/elleshimada instagram.com/abbey_howlett ropeadope.com

"Music is worth living for," Andrew W.K. sings in his latest rock anthem. In this second episode on the weirdness of music, JF and Phil focus on two works steeped in ambiguity and paradox: Bob Dylan's "Jokerman," from the landmark post-Christian album Infidels, and Franz Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz, No. 1: The Dance at the Village Inn," inspired by an episode in the Faust legend. If this conversation has a central theme, it may be music's power to unhinge every fixed binary, from God and the Devil to culture and nature. Music, as exemplified in these pieces, can put us in touch with the abiding mystery of the eternal in the historical, the unhuman in the human... The hills are alive! Hey! Welcome back to Dream a Little Dream, our space to talk about art, life and everything in between. Eric Hartl with Mosura and Moth Tunes! We had a pretty intellectual conversation about art and other related topics. We focused on his music making and even talked about a show where he found perfect strangers on craigslist to get together and play a gig. I think that was the most inspiring part of the conversation. I love when people come together, perfect strangers and collaborate to make something good and fun. This was a fun and dynamic conversation. You can find Eric and mosura on instagram There is a live performance coming up in November so make sure to follow Mosura so you can stay aware of all the events that are coming to the front. Mosura is also releasing an album tomorrow and you will be able to find it on bandcamp! Please see the links to the places you can find Eric and MOsura and their lovely MothTunes! Bandcamp: mosura.bandcaamp.com Instagram: mosura_band Thank you so much for listening and taking the time to support my podcast. I am grateful for each and every listener and would love to hear from you. Please like, share and comment on this recording to let me know what you are thinking, if you want to join the conversation or know someone who you think would have something to add to this topic. I am looking for people who are ready to follow their dreams, are ready as artists to demand that they be paid a fair wage for the work it takes to make beautiful things like music, art and dance. Art and music are the types of things that we as consumers pay for once but don’t take the time to think about how much joy it brings to you to listen to that awesome song, see that lovely painting in your house or be moved by the dynamic moves and gestures of a dancer. We also should take note that we are all artists inside and it is a part of us as humans to be creative. You don’t have to fall into the category of painter, musician or dancer to be an artist! As you can see from the people I have interviewed I have a tarot card reader, a baker and a storyteller! We all have something creative and unique to bring to the table! I want to hear your stories and celebrate your victories with you. Speaking of Victories I have made a step into the direction of crafting my life. I am reducing my hours to part time at my desk job so that I can focus more on my creative life. It is pretty scary because it is a pay cut and I will be making just enough from those hours to cover the essentials. I am so excited to start this new chapter of my life and I am shifting my mindset to abundance and believing with my WHOLE heart that the universe has my back. The Universe has your back when you follow your dreams and after interviewing people for this podcast I decided it is time for me to make the JUMP! Thank you again for listening and I look forward to your comments and likes! In the meantime, keep following your dreams!
In this first of two episodes devoted to the music of the weird, Phil and JF discuss two works that have bowled them over: the second movement of Ligeti's Musica Ricercata, used to powerful effect in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, and the opening music to Cronenberg's film Naked Lunch, composed by Howard Shore and featuring the inimitable stylings of Ornette Coleman. After teasing out the intrinsic weirdness of music in general, the dialogue soars over a strange country rife with shadows, mad geniuses, and skittering insects. And to top it all off, Phil breaks out the grand piano. This week the Professor TOGA Boys have been chosen to teach a class, specifically Introduction to Weird Music. We're joined by Saucewise and Chris Scarrison's Aftershow Spooktacular host Adjunct Professor Richie in an academic death match to determine the best album for getting a new generation into weird music. We travel through time, space, and the internet to get there all in the name of elevating academia. Good thing we have tenure. Other topics: Kyle picked Bruce Springsteen again, none of us know what music is, starting a beef with California, Merrill Garbus can see into the future
In the second episode of a two-part Out From Under special, Stu Buchanan talks to Mitchell Jones; founding member of both seminal Australian experimental band Scattered Order and the early 80s record label M-Squared which balanced the prevailing sounds of post-punk with lo-fi punk electronics and experimental explorations from a close knit community of artists. We hear from M-Squared artists Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, Systematics and Ya Ya Choral, along with Prod, A Cloakroom Assembly and Solipsik, the offshoot of renowned Australian industrial group SPK. We also pick up the Scattered Order story following the demise of M-Squared in 1984, and hear about their journey through the 80s and 90s, heading to an unexpected reformation seven years ago.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Whilst the legacies of post-punk, DIY electronics and proto industrial are widely known and documented in the UK and US scenes, their impact in an Australian context is less widely recognised. Bonding over the discovery of Cabaret Voltaire imports in Sydney record stores, Scattered Order formed in 1979 and gorged on a wide range of inputs to create a sound and visual aesthetic that was unique in Australia at the time. Together they also formed the label M Squared and fostered an impressive roster of bands such as Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, Systematics and Ya Ya Choral. In Part I of a two-part interview, Stu Buchanan talks to Scattered Order’s Mitchell Jones about the early years of the band and the formation and impact of the M-Squared label throughout the late Seventies and early Eighties.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Brett Thompson has been the guiding force in the Australian band Rand & Holland for nearly fifteen years, but it's been a tumultuous and often torturous ride. Widespread love for their lo-fi folk debut led to a polished pop follow up that furthered their critical acclaim whilst also setting in place a chain of events that led to the band conducing an artistic volte-face. They recorded a dark, intense and experimental third album, polarising audiences at a short series of live shows before abruptly breaking up.Four years later, in 2015, the fabled album posthumously saw the light of day, and in this episode, Brett Thompson gives a rare interview, explaining the background to the album and the breakup, and revealing that Rand and Holland is, in fact, far from over.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Andy Rantzen and Jochen Gutsch discuss their new collaborative project, which fuses Andy’s poetic spoken lyrics and Jochen’s diverse musical background, recording and performing as Hinterlandt. Highly conscious of the potential pitfalls of fusing poetry and experimental music, Andy and Jochen carve a path to an outcome that is tense and fascinating and compels you to listen close. We also hear music from Jochen’s Hinterlandt Ensemble and take in back catalogue work from Andy’s Pelican Daughters project.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Electronic artist Martyn Palmer has been recording calm and tranquil sounds as Broken Chip for many years, but in recent months something fundamental has changed – precipitating a shift from light to dark, from tranquil to anxious, culminating in a new project under the alias Hidden. In this week’s episode of Out From Under, we hear from Martyn Palmer about his new work, the impetus for the shift in direction and how it contrasts with his work as Broken Chip – taking in an exclusive mix of brand new tracks from Hidden and a walk through Martyn’s back catalogue.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
For six years, Nathan Jenkins was part of Australian extreme metal band The Amenta, known for their refusal to fully commit to any sense of what a metal band should be. After working within those extremities and contradictions, Nathan established the solo project titled Host, fusing dark ambient, noise and drone. In this episode of Out From Under, Stuart Buchanan talks to Nathan about this transition and his highly ritualistic approach to music making, as well as his role as curator for the upcoming two-day event, Black Mountain.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Marcus Whale has been straddling the worlds of experimental music and alternative pop throughout his career, from his early improvisational work as Scissor Lock, through the densely layered electronic pop of Collarbones to the taut, politically charged BV project he formed with Guerre aka Cassius Select. In this episode, we celebrate Marcus’ debut solo release under his own name, as he talks about his work, his personal growth, and his political intent, and reflects on the outcomes – one foot on both sides of the channel.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Brainbeau are a Brisbane-based underground electronic duo featuring Chelsey Charlton and Kat Martin aka Chelvis Chesley and Kat Martian, aka Dust Storm Jogger and X in O, aka Emotional Hoon and El Crumple Dash. There are vestiges of classic Detroit and Chicago techno in their music, riffing off Warp and Rephlex, Not Not Fun and 100% Silk, muddied with a lo-fi aesthetic redolent of a slew of North American tape labels. Stu Buchanan talks to Chelsey and Kat about Brainbeau and Brisbane, the world they’ve created and now inhabit – a place where they take fun very seriously indeed.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Sydney artist Jannah Quill works in electronic installation and performance, exploring and exposing hidden energies, predominantly through the photo voltaic process – translating light into electricity and ultimately into sound and music. Through her work she begins to “uncase electronic music for what it really is”. In this episode of Out From Under, I talk to Jannah Quill about her work and her process, and listen to her solo sound works – including a set recorded for the Liquid Architecture event, Ritual Community Music – and works recorded under her WDK project with Laura Hunt from Sydney punk band Ghastly Spats.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Andrew Tuttle is an artist who for twelve years has been exploring the relationship between the electronic and the acoustic – primarily by marrying the worlds of laptop processing with that of banjo and acoustic guitar. He has played live with artists such as Matmos, Mike Cooper, and Blank Realm, and recently released the album ‘Fantasy League’ on the Room40 imprint, Someone Good.Andrew discusses the inherent tension in his work and his relationship with his home city of Brisbane. In the second half, we hear an exclusive new recording from Andrew, titled ‘Transitory Adaptations’ – a mixtape of edited improvisations created while on the road in Europe, recorded in hotel rooms in Lausanne and Berlin and on a train from Berlin to Basel in April 2016.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Curator, musician and sound artist Lawrence English founded his Room 40 label over fifteen years ago, and in the intervening years has nurtured over 150 releases in a roster that includes David Toop, Tim Hecker and Grouper and Australian figures such as Oren Ambarchi, Chris Abrahams, and Ben Frost. In a wide-ranging interview, he talks about his long-standing relationship with the city of Brisbane, his deep commitment to opening the doors to seemingly inaccessible music, and the ways in which he considers our complex and evolving relationship with sound and listening.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Ps Patti Miller talks about the scripture behind hand-raising and music in the bible.
Sydney label 3BS Records was originally created by Blue Mountains-based musician Jonathan Pizzay as an outlet for his Mannheim Rocket and Klangberg projects, but has subsequently grown into a home for other artists sharing their label manager’s respect for experimental techno, ambient exploration, dystopian noise and low-end sonics. In this episode, we’re guided through the back catalogue taking in fellow Mountains resident Broken Chip, New Zealand’s Borrowed cs, Simon Unwin aka Hence Therefore, and Jonathan’s confrontational noise project Extreme Misanthropy Crew.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Two Australian artists working at the fringes of popular music; both on radically different musical trajectories, but nonetheless equally compelled by a deep desire to protect their own creative freedom. We hear from Via Tania, who discusses her twenty year career, playing with artists such as Prefuse 73, Tortoise, Marcus Popp and Jori Hulkonnen, and weaving her way from nineties grunge, through alt.jazz and Finnish techno to her recent work with a Chicago orchestra; and we talk to Sydney producer Ghostgirl, as she embarks on a spiritually-rich electronic project, inspired by a chance encounter with two rookie soldiers on Chat Roulette.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Two artists pushing back against the tyranny of the machine in electronic music – capturing inputs and processing outputs in ways that rely less directly on spending face time with the laptop screen. Alex White talks about Nadir, his noise collaboration with Ben Byrne, which rejects dark, power noise in favour of a light and bright counterpoint; and jazz musician Jacques Emery discusses the wide range of electronic output on his Sounds Are Sounds label, all of which favour art over craft, and – much like jazz – focus on a constant refinement of improvisational practice.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Chris Abrahams and Tony Buck discuss their wholly-improvised live shows and their approach to studio recording, plus there’s music from ‘Vertigo’ and their 1989 debut ‘Sex’, along with unreleased music from both Chris’ upcoming solo album on Room 40 and the new album from Tony’s collaborative project, Circadia.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
Plus, interviews and music with three artists from the most recent ‘Pretty Gritty’ event – vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Astrid Zeman; Sydney sound artist Daniel Whiting and Canberra musician Happy Axe, who lulls beautiful and eerie tones from her violin and musical saw.Originally broadcast on 'Out From Under' on Resonance Extra.
