After serving as a paratrooper in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division he began flight training in 1994. Next he began flying news helicopters in Los Angeles. Today, he’s CEO of Airborne Images, and he has over 8,500 flight hours. He’s worked all over North America on over 100 film and television projects. He recently joined the Red Bull team flying aerobatics in a helicopter and his debut air show was earlier this week at AirVenture. The Impossible Turn 10 Things to Know after a Takeoff Engine Failure Emergency #1 When the engine quits on takeoff, land straight ahead. Don't turn back to the runway unless you have no other good options. #2 Understand that Your Lizard Brain will take over in an Emergency And will tell you to turn back to the runway. #3 Understand that people die trying the impossible turn #4 Teaching and practicing the impossible turn at low altitude is malpractice! #5 There is almost always a better alternatives than turning back to the runway. #6 It’s NOT a 180 degree turn to go back to the runway—it’s far more complicated than that. #7 Choosing the optimal bank angle to get back to the runway will be very tricky. #8 The steeper your bank angle, the more rapidly stall speed rises. #9 You might not make it back to the runway, and if you do, you’ll be landing with a tailwind. #10 Always do a pretakeoff briefing Before you take off. Summary There are many lessons that pilots can learn from the incident in Atlanta in which a man climb up on the wing of an arriving airliner, jumped off, and ran naked onto the runway. 1. There’s always something new that happens you’ve never seen before. 2. Early information is often is often incorrect. 3. When something very out of the ordinary happens, Stop immediately. 4. Shut down your engine. 5. Don’t start up again until you’re absolutely sure everyone is clear the area. 6. Relay information about things you see that others may not see. 7. If there’s any doubt about the condition of the plane, don’t start up without having someone inspect the aircraft, and consider having it towed. 8.
