'Tis the season for a repeat episode. I chose this interview with musician Andrew Bird from the archive because he always reminds me of the holidays. Before I play my 2019 conversation with Bird, I speak about how an episode he recorded in 2020 with Maron impacted me, including his perspective on ‘molting'. Despite the discomfort I felt revisiting something recorded nearly 4 years ago and judging my past self, what Bird shared with me in our conversation feels as relevant today as it did then.  We covered the slow growth he experienced coming up as a musician, discipline in building his career, and how his strict classical violin training required strict adherence to rules—rules he ended up breaking to create his own signature style. He's extremely prolific: since this interview was released, he's put out 4 additional albums, including his HARK! which I talk about in the introduction. In this interview, we focused on My Finest Work Yet, which had just come out. Like all his albums, it's filled with smart lyrics and mythology (which we talk about in this episode) as well as fresh melodies and probing themes. Recorded  in a crowded room at a music festival,  the sound is different than usual. And you might notice some odd jumps from topic to topic as we made the best of the audio we had. You'll hear us jump around from how he writes songs, to how he met his wife, how he spends his mornings, parents his son, and of course, how he began incorporating whistling. Andrew Bird Puts His Personal Demons To Work on 'Inside Problems'

Singer, songwriter, violinist, guitarist, whistler, glockenspielist, and actor (on Fargo), Andrew Bird, continues “his subversion of indie rock”, (-Schaefer) by including classical, folk, expansive violin solos, and old-time jazz; and has made a remarkable document of tilting at the windmills of his inner demons during these last few years of isolation and insularity. This latest record, 2022's Inside Problems, sees Bird once again as an entertaining thinker who can couch dark cultural commentary in joyfully buoyant pop songs, (he prefers this exercise in contrasts.) Especially entertaining is a counting/numbers song (in the vein of Schoolhouse Rock), “Eight”, which, he says, is his favorite number -  and both this live version, and the album version of this song feature a pretty epic classic rock-length violin solo. As The Thinker, he invites us into getting literary with references to the late novelist and essayist Joan Didion (and related work by Irish poet William Butler Yeats), Greek mythology (Icarus and Orpheus), The Velvet Underground, and Beethoven. Interestingly, Bird says that rather than compartmentalizing the various musical genres and conservatory training experiences (“I spent…four years trying not to let them educate me”, Pitchfork), he says that he approaches riffs and melodies like folk music in the oral tradition, whether they are classical riffs of Ravel or Beethoven, old time music, Irish tunes, jazz standards, or Lou Reed/John Cale. So it makes perfect sense that when his internal jukebox kept spinning a piano reduction of Beethoven's Allegretto from the 7th Symphony, which he'd heard in the movie, Howard's End, he turned that riff into a bridge in his own song “Atomized.” Over the past few years, Andrew Bird has also taken up acting (Fargo), scored a Judd Apatow film, earned a Grammy nomination for My Finest Work Yet (2019), and continued his wide-ranging musical collaborations. Additionally, his work, “Hover”, was performed at the most recent 2022 Ojai Festival, in an early music instrument arrangement by Emi Ferguson (Artist Propulsion Lab Class of 2022). All this to say, we are excited and honored (ok, I am BEYOND EXCITED) that Andrew Bird plays remotely and chats about his new album for the Soundcheck Podcast. – Caryn Havlik Set list: “Eight”, “Atomized” “Make a Picture” Watch "Eight": Watch "Make a Picture":

As broadcast March 21, 2022 with plenty of spring for your podcast steppin.  Tonight we welcome two very new things with open arms on The Drop, with the start of Season 7 of the show happening on Spring Solstice, we couldn't possibly take that as a bad sign, although Iggy Pop and David Bowie weren't having the most auspicious night on this date in 1976, which is our history opener for the gig.  Tons of great new tunes to cover on the show tonight, with new tunes from The Smile, Bon Iver, and a new album announced from Arcade Fire to highlight.  However, we were missing Kat Bass at least in the studio this week as she came down with COVID, so is trapped at home until later this week as a result.  Great cuts to hear in our 2nd hour Popcast feature from her as well though, although without her lovely voice.  Nothing serious with Kat's situation though, she's doing well so no worries!#feelthegravityTracklisting: Part I (00:00)Iggy Pop – The PassengerAndrew Bird – AtomizedYumi Zouma – Astral ProjectionsDent May – Crying LaughingArcade Fire – The Lightning IArcade Fire – The Lightning II Part II (32:12)The Smile – Skrting On The SurfaceEthan Gruska – So UnimportantHovvdy – Everythingwhy mona – lemonsMt. GEORGE WINSTON is undeniably a household name. He's inspired fans and musicians alike with his singular solo acoustic piano songs for more than 40 years while selling 15 million albums. A tireless road warrior playing nearly 100 concerts annually, live performance for Winston is akin to breathing. Winston's music is evocative, offering us all a chance to take a step back from our perpetually busy lives and let our minds adventurously wander. ‘Restless Wind’ is the acclaimed 15th solo piano album and a portrayal of Winston's place in a chaotic world -- his compositions extend solace with an idiosyncratic grace. ANDREW BIRD is an internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, whistler, and songwriter who picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. Since beginning his recording career in 1997, Bird has released 13 albums and performed extensively worldwide. He has recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, appeared as “Dr. Stringz” on Jack’s Big Music Show, and headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and festivals worldwide. New album 'My Finest Work Yet' is out now.

Photographer Steve Schapiro made some of the most compelling and moving images of the civil rights movement in the 1960's. He's paired those images with the words of one of the movement's intellectual leaders, writer James Baldwin. Baldwin's twin essays that make up his book "The Fire Next Time" are intertwined with Schapiro's photos in a way that bring the text to life with renewed urgency. And musician Andrew Bird is one of the few musicians who can get away with naming his new album "My Finest Work Yet" without eliciting serious eye-rolls. The wry sense of humor that went into naming the album is spread across a series of songs that have a political bent.

Bird's latest album, "My Finest Work Yet," finds him grappling with themes of current day dichotomies and how to identify a moral compass amidst such divisive times. He tackles these topics with a more direct songwriting approach than his previous releases, taking greater risks both lyrically and in recording. This week we have an interview with the music world's foremost whistler, Andrew Bird. Even just listening to his recordings, it's clear that Bird has been playing violin since four years of age. But his music is so much more than impeccable technique—and his brand new record, My Finest Work Yet, taps into a vibrant, labyrinthine inner world of heady emotion, obscure reference, and brilliant songwriting. Host Lior Phillips and Bird work through his elaborate career—his first performances, seeing Japanese noise rockers Boredoms as his first concert, his time with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and all the way up through to his latest release. Plus, just two days out from My Finest Work Yet, we've got an early taste of the record in the form of the dazzling "Sisyphus". For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
