I'm not exactly sure how this mix started. I think I was listening to the track, Outlook Remains Untouched, by |||||||||||||||||||| , yes that's the actual name the artist goes by. |||||||||||||||||||| on bandcamp I like the jazzy vibe the tune has. It reminded me of similar tracks from the heyday of glitch and idm that also had a jazz feel to them. Sort of Jazz-ish. So I grabbed some older tracks from 2001, 2002, 2006, and mixed them with new tunes to come up with this electronic mix that isn't really jazz...more like Jazz-ish. EarWax ushers in the 50th episode by pulling down a true heavy hitter off the shelf - David Bowie's "Station to Station."This record's story is full of unbelievable stories and adversity, both of which were largely self-imposed. Bowie's drive for reinvention is present throughout his discography, and Station to Station is arguably his most pivotal record.Leaving the spaceman firmly in his rearview and with his eyes on Berlin (whether or not he knew that), Bowie marked this transition point in his career with one of his most stunning works.Station to Station is an art rock masterpiece that maintains its commercial appeal. Despite extraordinary odds against, David Bowie rose to the challenge and delivered something truly legendary. Hard to think of a better album to celebrate 50 episodes! Thanks for listening! Back in my baseball days when we'd get down early in a game, we would often talk about just going “station to station.” This meant we needed to keep things simple and just try to get runners on base…so that we could methodically get back into the game. When things get stressful, overwhelming, or difficult, it's often an important practice for us to stay present and focus on going station to station. On this episode, I share some specific ways we can do this, which allow us to be more peaceful, grounded, and effective, as we navigate change and challenge. Let's go !
Back in 1974, Earl Slick was a 22-year old jobbing session guitarist fast developing a reputation for his supple, searing style and versatility in all idioms. Hired by Bowie to join his Diamond Dogs tour, Slick then had to suddenly pivot from apocalypto-rock to sleek Philly soul at a moment's notice - but acquitted himself so well, he was invited to play on tracks destined for Young Americans before forming the core band, alongside Carlos Alomar, Dennis Davis, George Murray and Roy Bittan to cut the extraordinary Station to Station, in LA, during October 1975. Bringing his charismatic flair to the sessions, Slick rose each time to Bowie's demands for an esoteric sonic palette, turning in one bravura performance after another despite, by his own admission, almost matching Bowie's ridiculous drug consumption levels at the time. Although his boss's directions could be at times gnomic - Bowie instructed him on one occasion to simply play a Chuck Berry riff repeatedly throughout a track - the pair sparked off each other, forging a deep bond. Despite a contretemps between Bowie's management and Slick at the end of the sessions, Earl returned to the Bowie band in 1983 for Serious Moonlight and then again during the early 2000s, when he became again, a key member of the group, up to The Next Day. Today, Station to Station stands out as one of Bowie's finest records, the pivot from Young Americans' funk and soul to the electronic abstractions and experimental textures which would emerge fully with Low. Despite the frenzied sessions, the album's six tracks are each mini-masterpieces. In this episode, the first of two devoted to the album, we take a leisurely stroll down memory lane and begin with Earl's reminiscences of pre-Beatles America, his first audition for Bowie and Visconti, bafflement at the Philly soul era, meeting and forgetting (and then meeting again) John Lennon, and the intense sessions that made up the first side of Station to Station. Thanks to Earl, Oliver and of course the regal Tank for all their time and help in assembling this episode and as ever, please do let me know what you think of our chat and share this podcast far and wide!

Station to Station Theme2. To The West3. To The East The Sausage Factory 470 was edited by Chris O'Regan The Sausage Factory is an interview-based podcast that lifts the lid on the makers of videogames. It examines the way in which games are made by asking the very people who create them, though the questions asked aren't just about game design, they also cover how developers made their start and what inspires them as creators. Split into two halves, the first segment delves into what makes the developers tick by asking about how they started, what and who inspires them and what games they are currently playing, whereas the second part of the show covers the game that they are currently working on and the thought processes behind its development. So, if you really want to hear about a game's gestation in full and frank detail then you have found the right podcast.

As far as album artists that dominated the album era, the late great David Bowie is among the all-timers. From 1969 to 1980 he put out 13 albums, all of which had the critics blown away and audiences and the music listening public clamoring for more. And Bowie gave them more, continuing to put out mind-bending material all the way until his untimely death in 2016. Gabe Scalone is an ATTT favorite for many reasons, among them he tends to nerd out to the extreme, just like the best of us. Ben and Gabe both listened to David Bowie's entire catalog in preparation for TOP TEN DAVID BOWIE ALBUMS and we think we've put together a damn fine playlist highlighting songs from David's many masterpieces. Katherine Mansfield was a New Zealand author of international renown. Her short stories and poetry have been translated into more than 25 languages and her work continues to have an impact one hundred years after her death in France in 1923. Mansfield spent most of her adult life in Europe, working as a writer, editor, and critic, and living in various places, moving as fortune and misfortune decreed. Author Redmer Yska follows these movements in his new book, Katherine Mansfield's Europe: Station to Station. Using Mansfield's letters and diaries as guides, he travels through Germany, France and Switzerland to the villas, pensions, hotels, spas, railway stations, churches, towns, beaches and cities where Mansfield wrote some of her finest stories. In this Public History Talk, recorded live in June 2023, Cherie Jacobson, Director of Katherine Mansfield House & Garden, interviewed Redmer about his new book. These monthly Public History Talks are a collaboration between the Alexander Turnbull Library and Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SafetyWing Ildikó Szabó has traveled to every country in the world. Ildiko Szabo Counting Countries I knew of Ildy for several years and had noted her social media presence, but it wasn't until October of this year when I met her in person at the Extraordinary Travel Festival in Yerevan. I shared several conversations with her and recognized she would be a great guest for the podcast. And, voila, a month after the festival we were recording this podcast. I would like to thank Ildy, since this podcast was a challenging endeavor. To create 2 hours of recordings took us nearly 6 hours. And then in post-production another 6 hours. To say we had some technical difficulties would be an understatement. Ildy was very, very gracious with her time. And that is how the cookie crumbles, some episodes are straight forward and easy to publish, and well others suck up a ton of time. And just a warning, at times it might seem like the podcast is missing audio from our conversation since at times it appears we are skipping around. And it is true, we lost a fair amount of audio recordings, besides re-recording and my best attempts of editing, the podcast might be wanting for a better flow. Nonetheless, Ildy provides a ton of great stories from her travels. I found Ildy to be an accomplished traveler as well as very adventurous. One thing I personally enjoy about interviewing all of these great travelers is how so many of them are interconnected. I learned of a connection between Ildy and Johnny Ward. I was impressed years ago to hear of Johnny's adventure on a cement ship from Oman to Socotra. Well, in this conversation I was to learn Ildy took the same trip on her own to Socotra. Really impressive. I have a new partnership to announce. I am promoting SafetyWing, a travel insurance company, and yes, I am an affiliate. I have been using them personally for over 2 years. And yes, there are a couple of reasons why … let me highlight a couple of the features. First, you can purchase insurance while you are already on the go. Some insurance products force you to sign up only when you are in your home country. Second, you only have to share your initial country on your trip. Many times, on my open-ended trips, I end up adding in additional countries. I don't have to worry about forgetting to update SafetyWing. They have me covered. Third, most countries are covered. Exceptions are Cuba, Iran, DPRK, Syria, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Everywhere else is covered from Mogadishu to Tripoli. To me, this insurance is fire and forgot. It will renew every month, or you can set an end date. But compared to many of the other products out there, this one to me is the most flexible. So, take a moment, check out SafetyWing, and click on the link to sign up for your next trip. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SafetyWing I would like to thank everyone for their support of Counting Countries, especially my Patrons: Lucy Shoe, Phillip Jones, Simen Flotvik Mathisen, Ted Nims, Bisa Myles, Thor Pedersen, and Adam Hickman for supporting this podcast. They help pay for the production of this podcast. You can support this podcast by going to Patreon.com/CountingCountries. I would also like to thank and highlight two new patrons of the podcast, Ed Hotchkiss and Barry Hoffner. I also met Ed in Yerevan for the festival as well. Ed is Chasing 193 and is also an accomplished photographer. I just purchased his book, Station To Station, a labor of love with black and white photos highlighting the people of the NYC subway. Please take a moment to check out his book. Barry is also Chasing 193 and has been to over 150 countries. Say hi to him on his IG account, barryh99. You can also support Counting Countries be writing a review or sharing this podcast with a travel lover. My patrons hear extra content, like an additional hour of my conversation with Ildy. And at the end of Ildy's conversation, you will hear a ten-minute conversation with Thor Pedersen of Once Upon A Saga. As you might know, I have been documenting his journey every 6 months for the last 3 years. My patrons will hear nearly 90 minutes of Thor recounting his last 6 months and his predictions for the end of the saga. I was in Bangkok for this recording while Ildy was in Budapest. Please listen in and enjoy. Thank you to my Patrons …. Barry Hoffner, Edward Hotchkiss, Lucy Shoe, Phillip Jones, Thor Pedersen, Simen Flotvik Mathisen, Adam Hickman, Bisa Myles & Ted Nims. Be the first on your block to sport official Counting Countries apparel!

As broadcast March 21, 2022 with plenty of spring for your podcast steppin. Tonight we welcome two very new things with open arms on The Drop, with the start of Season 7 of the show happening on Spring Solstice, we couldn't possibly take that as a bad sign, although Iggy Pop and David Bowie weren't having the most auspicious night on this date in 1976, which is our history opener for the gig. Tons of great new tunes to cover on the show tonight, with new tunes from The Smile, Bon Iver, and a new album announced from Arcade Fire to highlight. However, we were missing Kat Bass at least in the studio this week as she came down with COVID, so is trapped at home until later this week as a result. Great cuts to hear in our 2nd hour Popcast feature from her as well though, although without her lovely voice. Nothing serious with Kat's situation though, she's doing well so no worries!#feelthegravityTracklisting: Part I (00:00)Iggy Pop – The PassengerAndrew Bird – AtomizedYumi Zouma – Astral ProjectionsDent May – Crying LaughingArcade Fire – The Lightning IArcade Fire – The Lightning II Part II (32:12)The Smile – Skrting On The SurfaceEthan Gruska – So UnimportantHovvdy – Everythingwhy mona – lemonsMt. David Bowie consumes nothing but cocaine, milk, and bell peppers while going down an occultist rabbit hole and working all hours of the night on his 10th studio album "Station to Station". The boys talk about indulgent song lengths, tasty arpeggios, and the Thin White Duke's considerable vocal range. The very funny Toronto comedian, writer and podcaster Michael Balazo joins the show for a discussion of David Bowie's American odyssey in the seventies, as captured by two film projects. The 1975 BBC documentary Cracked Actor followed Bowie on his Diamond Dogs tour and revealed a frail, drug-fueled, isolated rock star, which inspired Nicolas Roeg to cast him as the alien visitor in his big screen debut, 1976's The Man Who Fell to Earth; a sci-fi classic that directly influenced the next two Bowie albums, Station To Station and Low, and his newest persona, the Thin White Duke. It was an incredibly productive era for Bowie artistically, and it was a miracle he made it out of this insane period of his life alive, as Michael and I discuss in detail. Plus a fun chat about two great guys you need to know about: Čumil and Glurpo! Follow Michael Balazo on Twitter. Check out The Landlord and Tenant Podmess, Michael's comedy pod he does with James Hartnett.
