The curtains drawn on 2025-26, we can finally look back on the season as a whole and how bad (or good?) it was. Si hosted this one joined by Jonny Greenwood and Mick Martin to look back, and forward, from a position of relief that we made it to the end of the season. Was this the lowest point of the project and is that as bad as we think it'll get? If so, are we comfortable with 12th being the bottom of our limit now? Who is responsible? Was it worth it to perform well in all the cup competitions, which in hindsight came at the expense of the Premier League form? How bad a taste have the 2x derby defeats (and them sneaking into Europe) left on the season and fan mood? And were there any positive memories to look back on from a rollercoaster season which tested us all! DL kicks off the Verse Chorus Verse Radiohead series with the first two albums — solo, no Evil, no Rachel, just a man and his favorite band.Pablo Honey (1992) gets a 7/10. It's a gateway drug, not a masterpiece — a Brit rock album from the early 90s that happens to contain one of the most important songs ever recorded. The story behind Creep: recorded in one take, initially hated by the band, ignored until Arsenio Hall found the tape in his car, made enormous by a Beavis and Butt-Head segment. Top songs: Creep, Rip Chord, You.The Bends (1995) gets a 9/10 and a full reassessment — DL argues this album is massively underrated and better than he'd ever given it credit for. Jonny Greenwood's octatonic guitar work on "Just" (inspired by an obscure French composer), the story of EMI threatening to drop them after Pablo Honey, Tom York's stage breakdown and the NME calling it a "temper tantrum," and why Fake Plastic Trees is great even if it's not a personal favorite. Top songs: Just, My Iron Lung, Bulletproof I Wish I Was.Part 1 of a 6-episode Radiohead dissection series. OK Computer with Rachel and Evil is next.

This episode we look at the phenomena of hugely successful artists refusing to play the songs that made them!  First among these is Radiohead, whose “Creep” launched them onto the world stage.  Others include The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Madonna.   Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is The Stranglers' 1977 debut, the excellent “Rattus Norvegicus”, yet another punk record from the mid-70s. Mick loves this album for its energy and refusal to bow down to supposed “punk” rules.  We also look at some of the highlights of The Stranglers' outrageous career to this day.  In Rock News, Jeff examines the success (or otherwise) of a Quebec band called Angine de Poitrine, known for their complex, “microtonal” compositions and absurdist public image, featuring oversized papier-mâché masks and black-and-white polka-dotted costumes. Imagine! Jeff also has a look at this year's inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, including Iron Maiden, Phil Collins, and Joy Division, and our Rod Stewart moment looks at his relaxed attitude towards death.  Plenty there for everyone!  References:  1001 Albums You Must Hear before You Die, Robert Dimery, The Stranglers, Rattus Norvegicus, Hugh Cornwell, JJ Burnel, sexism & misogyny, “(Get a) Grip (on yourself)”, “Peaches”, “Down in the Sewer”, Deep Purple, “Strange Kind of Woman”, ice cream van, "Golden Brown", harpsichord, Battersea Park Big Top Festival strippers, Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Philip Selway, Pablo Honey, Electioneering, Just, “Rolling Stone's 250 Greatest Guitarists of all Time”, “OK Computer”, Nick Cave, “Creep”, “Pavlov's Dog”, “Julia”, AC/DC, “It's a Long Way to the Top”, Bon Scott, Pat Benatar, “Hit me with your Best Shot”, Beastie Boys, “Fight for Your Right (to Party)”, Billy Joel , “Tell Her About It”, Weird Al Jankovic, “Eat It”, Rolling Stones, “Brown Sugar”, Madonna, Dylan, “Hurricane”, Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin, "Stairway to Heaven", Eric Clapton, "Tears in Heaven”, George Harrison, "My Sweet Lord", "He's So Fine"  Playlist (all the music & artists we referred to in this episode) Angine de Potrine Hugh Cornwell Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!

Epic in scope and length, deliberately problematic characters, a very distinct aesthetic and a Jonny Greenwood score to give you the jitters: Paul Thomas Anderson's 2025 award-bothering opus is Yosra's pick for this month's Flicking. But do Yosra, Hannah and Mick think Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Teyana Taylor deserve the plaudits being heaped upon them? And how much white male gaze is too much white male gaze when it comes to the hyper-sexualisation of a Black female character?  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The latest episode and final episode of 2025 of Sound Speed Action is live, and what a way to end the year. One Battle After Another caps off an incredible run of movies and stands as our clear favorite of the year. What a film.Marc and I break down this ambitious, unsettling, and often darkly funny work from director Paul Thomas Anderson, and the more we talk about it, the more impressive it becomes. This is one of those rare movies that genuinely gets better with repeat viewings. The performances across the board are phenomenal. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a fascinating, off-balance turn. Chase Infinity, in her first film role, is an absolute revelation. Teyana Taylor is terrific, and Sean Penn is unforgettable as the antagonist Lockjaw, a performance that feels destined to dominate awards season. Benicio del Toro appears briefly as Sensei and somehow steals every moment he's in. Regina Hall continues to prove we need far more movies built around her. Tony Goldwyn is deeply unsettling, playing once again against typecasting he somehow always elevates. And James Ratterman, a real former Homeland Security official, is genuinely chilling in a role that feels uncomfortably authentic. The score, composed by Jonny Greenwood, marks his sixth collaboration with Anderson, and it is astonishing. The music doesn't just support the film, it drives it, becoming a constant, pulsing engine that keeps everything in motion.Loosely inspired by Vineland, the film takes a single thread from the novel and spins it into something entirely its own. It's timely, disturbing, sharply funny, and deeply confident. With an estimated budget between $130 and $170 million, this is a movie that likely never made financial sense on paper. Its existence feels like a small miracle, and a reminder that there are still producers and executives willing to back original, risky storytelling simply because it's worth making. One Battle After Another is now playing in theaters and is also available to rent on demand and stream on HBO. That said, if you can see this in a theater, do it. You will not regret it.Thanks for listening. This marks our final episode of 2025. Sound Speed Action will be back soon. See you at the movies.

For this episode — the first to feature RBP's editorial co-ordinator William Pike — we're joined by Melody Maker legend Simon Price for a discussion of his career, his championing of Manic Street Preachers, and Radiohead's first tour since 2018. Beginning in the South Wales town of Barry, we hear about Simon's boyhood, his formative pop passions and the first of his distinctive sartorial metamorphoses. He recalls his late '80s move to London and the years at Melody Maker that took in his first interviews with fellow Welshmen the Manics and his integral involvement in the Neo-glam sub-genre known as Romo. Our guest's review of the first Radiohead album provides the cue for clips from Amy Linden's 1997 audio interview with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. We hear Thom talking about the just-released OK Computer and about his beef with Melody Maker itself: this prompts a general discussion of the band's standing as they prepare for the first date of their European tour. After reflecting on the 13 years he spent reviewing gigs for the Independent on Sunday, Simon discusses the gestation of 2021's Curepedia, the "Cure A-Z" he assembled for White Rabbit books. We conclude the episode with tributes to jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette and keyboardist David Ball, phlegmatic foil to Soft Cell frontman Marc Almond. Many thanks to special guest Simon Price. Curepedia: An A–Z of the Cure is published by White Rabbit and available from all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Articles, interviews and reviews from Simon Price, Manic Street Preachers: Drags to Riches, Radiohead: Pablo Honey, Radiohead audio (1997), Jack DeJohnette: More Than One Way, Soft Cell: Cell Division and The Tainted Life of Soft Cell

This week's Mixtape Rewind takes you back to January 2022 when Matt and Sam gave you 12 new tracks from the latter part of 2021.  Sam is almost certain one song is Norwegian but later realizes it was actually French - you'll have to listen to find out what that's all about. (The perils of recording early in the morning).Nearly four years ago, we went from a posthumous Juice WRLD cut with Justin Bieber to a high-voltage rocker from Goodbye June, before swerving into Nas's compact masterclass and The Smile's angular warning shot from Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. The middle of the journey softens without losing purpose. Save Face disguises a dark story in glittering pop-punk; Stromae returns with a beautiful, aching meditation on isolation; Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats bring blues rock warmth with a simple promise: I'm on your side. We keep that thread alive with Aurora's poetic electro-pop and a cinematic surprise—U2's Your Song Saved My Life from Sing 2—proof that film can spark songs meant to be felt by every age in the room.We land the plane with intimacy and legacy. JJ Wilde and Billy Raffoul trade lines like late-night confessions, Brian Wilson reminds us what a signature sound really means, and Broken Social Scene closes with a winter-walk tempo and a lyric about moving slowly through uncertainty. It's a mix built for replay and for sharing—equal parts adrenaline and reflection, discovery and comfort. Here's the mix available on our Super Awesome Mix app (requires Apple Music): https://app.superawesomemix.com/qdjkzrCDUd7y4sx68 Here's the mix on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6Qc8jOICb2quuMWO8XnrJy?si=d510dc3ff85e4430Wandered to LA by Juice WRLD & Justin BieberStep Aside by Goodbye June40-16 Building by NasYou Will Never Work In Television Again by The SmileGLITTER by Save FaceL'enfer by StromaeI'm On Your Side by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night SweatsEverything Matters by AURORAYour Song Saved My Life by U2Let Me Go by JJ Wilde & Billy RaffoulRight Where I Belong by Brian Wilson & Jim JamesCurse Your Fail by Broken Social Scene Support the showVisit us at https://www.superawesomemix.com to learn more about our app, our merchandise, our cards, and more!

Composer Steve Reich is one of the most influential musicians of modern times. In the 1960s he helped rewrite the rules of composition, using analogue tape machines to experiment with rhythm, repetition and syncopation. As the godfather of musical minimalism, his influence on Philip Glass, David Bowie, Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, and many other composers, has been enormous. Countless dance music producers also owe a debt to pieces including It's Gonna Rain, Drumming, Different Trains and Music for 18 Musicians. His music has been performed in concert halls all around the world, and his many awards include three Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize, the Polar Prize for Music and the Premium Imperiale. Steve Reich tells John Wilson how, at the age of 14, three very different recordings awoke his interest in music: Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Bach's 5th Brandenburg Concerto, and a piece of bebop jazz featuring saxophonist Charlie Parker, trumpeter Miles Davis and drummer Kenny Clarke. Inspired to start a jazz quintet of his own, Reich began to study percussion before enrolling in a music history course at Cornell University. It was here he discovered the music of Pérotin, the 12th century French composer associated with the Notre Dame school of polyphony in Paris. His beautiful sustained harmonies had a profound influence on Reich's own compositions, including Four Organs (1970) and Music for 18 Musicians (1976).Steve Reich also explains the significance of two books on his music; Studies in African Music by A.M.Jones and Music in Bali by Colin McPhee, both of which led to a greater understanding of music from parts of the world where music is passed down aurally rather than through notation.Producer: Edwina Pitman Additional recording: Laura Pellicer
