Today I'm joined by Michael John Warren to discuss SPRING AWAKENING: THOSE YOU'VE KNOWN 15 years after the smash, Tony-winning Broadway run of “Spring Awakening,” the original cast and creative team reunite for a spectacular, one-night only reunion concert to benefit The Actors Fund. Chronicling their whirlwind journey back to the stage, the film follows the players as they reconnect and rediscover the beauty and timelessness of the hit musical, sharing the show's underdog origins, its path to Tony glory, the universal themes of teenage repression and angst, and the unconventional love story of breakout stars Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele. The documentary pulls back the curtain to showcase the reunited original cast and creative team at rehearsals, in their homes and backstage. The film features electrifying performances from the reunion concert in November 2021, newly filmed interviews, candid archival video and photographs, as well as performance footage from the original 2006 show that went on to sweep the Tonys, winning eight awards, including Best Musical. “Spring Awakening” forever changed the lives of the mostly unknown teenage cast and inspired a generation of fans by laying bare taboo issues of teen love, abortion, abuse, sexual identity and suicide in an unapologetic, edgy rock musical set in the 1890s. HBO Documentary Films' SPRING AWAKENING: THOSE YOU'VE KNOWN , directed by Michael John Warren and produced by RadicalMedia (HBO's “David Byrne's American Utopia”), debuts TUESDAY, MAY 3 (9:00-10:23 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

Juice WRLD's latest song “Already Dead” is here. The song is set to appear on the official soundtrack for HBO Documentary Films' Music Box series episode Into the Abyss—an “intimate and often eye-opening exploration” of the late rapper's life, according to a statement. Juice's team opened up a preorder to sell “Already Dead” as single CDs for 99 cents, which have already sold out. Back in June, it was announced that his next album would be released as a trilogy, the first of which is titled The Party Never Ends. “It's 3 parts to the album,” Lil Bibby wrote in a now-deleted tweet. “First part of the album is 90% done, jus waiting on [Travis Scott] spam him!” Juice's former manager, Peter Jideonwo, revealed prior to Bibby's tweet that the first installation would include features from Lil Uzi Vert and “a few other big people.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

I could have spent the entire hour with Anne Brodie this week, there’s just so much entertainment on the docket this weekend, but we crammed as much as we could into the short time we have including Michelle Pfeiffer in French Exit, Godzilla vs Kong which might be the campy escape you need this weekend, plus HBO Documentary Films brilliant four-part series Exterminate the Brutes from Raoul Peck which is a no holds barred, dizzying examination of the cost of men's greed, genocide, and colonialism. HBO Documentary Films' THE LADY AND THE DALE, a four-part documentary series from Emmy(R)-winning producers Mark and Jay Duplass (HBO's "Room 104") and directed by Nick Cammilleri and Zackary Drucker, traces the audacious story of Elizabeth Carmichael, a larger-than-life entrepreneur who rose to prominence during the 1970s oil crisis with her promotion of a fuel-efficient, three-wheeled car known as The Dale. At a time when three big American automobile manufacturers ruled the road, Liz launched a futurist vehicle that promised to get 70 miles to the gallon. Her promotional zeal thrust her into fierce public and media scrutiny which uncovered a web of mystery and suspicion about the car's technology and her own checkered past. THE LADY AND THE DALE is a probing exploration of family and identity seen through the lens of the rise and fall of a fearless and wily innovator, an extraordinarily resilient woman and a dedicated parent. Co-director Zackary Drucker (Nick Cammilleri) joins us for a conversation on one of the more convoluted personal stories and one of the most shameless schemes in American business history. For news and updates go to: hbo.com/documentaries/the-lady-and-the-dale The series debuts with two back-to-back episodes SUNDAY, JANUARY 31 (9:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), with new episodes airing subsequent Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. THE LADY AND THE DALE will premiere on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max.

But will her unholy ritual finally be stopped by Leah Ratliff (Allison Scagliotti), feminist blogger and ambitious reporter for the school paper?Louise Griffiths made her 2006 film debut in '06 horror movie THE DEVIL'S CHAIR, booked her first lead role in dark comedy THE REVENANT, and appeared in ALL'S FAIRE IN LOVE, starring Christina Ricci and Matthew Lillard. In its landmark 1963 decision Gideon v. Wainwright, the Supreme Court mandated the right to counsel in federal and state criminal proceedings. Fifty-one years after that unanimous decision, some question whether Gideon's promise has been fulfilled, as public defenders struggle against heavy caseloads, limited resources and low pay. On this episode of Lawyer2Lawyer, hosts Bob Ambrogi and J. Craig Williams interview Jonathan Rapping, founder of the Atlanta-based public defender training program Gideon's Promise, and Dawn Porter, director and producer of the documentary Gideon's Army. Together they discuss the daily rigors faced by public defenders in the south, their personal beliefs about unequal access to justice, and their ideas about how to better deliver on the promise of Gideon. Jonathan Rapping is the president and founder of Gideon's Promise, a training and support group for public defenders in the south aimed at creating greater access to justice for indigent defendants. He is also the director of the Honors Program in Criminal Justice at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School, where he teaches criminal law and criminal procedure. Rapping is the former director of public defender training programs in the District of Columbia, Georgia, and Louisiana. He is the recipient of the Lincoln Leadership Award from Kentucky's Department of Public Advocacy, the Sentencing Project Award from the National Association of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists, and the Gideon's Promise Award from the Southern Center for Human Rights. Dawn Porter is a lawyer and the founder of Trilogy Films. She was the director and producer of the award-winning Gideon's Army, a documentary about public defenders associated with Gideon's Promise, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and aired on HBO Documentary Films. Prior to beginning her film and television career, Porter worked as an attorney at Baker and Hostetler and ABC Television Network. Among her many projects, she directed "Spies of Mississippi," a documentary on PBS about celebrity Chef Alexandra Guarnaschelli; produced "Serious Moonlight" starring Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton; and produced "The Green," an independent feature starring Cheyenne Jackson (from 30 Rock) and Emmy-winning actress Julia Ormond.
