Episode NotesPLEASE listen to Part 1, which is S1:E7 which also has really great content! Part 2 is a continuation and includes great citations…here are some links...(and sign up for our mailing list for future updates):Michelle talks with Christina Shimizu one of the co-founders of community centric fundraisingChrissy work includes Seattle-based organizations like the Wing Luke Museum, Asian Pacific Americans for Civic Empowerment Votes, Chinatown International District Coalition, and she's been working with the Decriminalize Seattle Movement, the Afro-Socialist Defund Seattle Police Campaign. And she's now housed at Puget Sound Sage. References: As we talk about inspiration, Chrissy mentions her own influences and specifically names The Revolution Will Not Be Funded, Justice Funders, the now closed Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training, Social Justice Fund, Mijo Lee, Simone and her partner Dae Shik Kim Jr (Sr. Producer @vice/@vicenews on Twitter at @daeshikjr) She states that the modality we exist within is white-dominant, colonial and neoliberal (we define neoliberalism in Part 1) We dove right into Andrew Carnegie and his essay The Gospel of WealthSince you are reading the show notes I'll pull out the quote she uses:"But whether the law be benign or not, we must say of it, as we say of the change in the conditions of men to which we have referred: It is here; we cannot evade it; no substitutes for it have been found; and while the law may be sometimes hard for the individual, it is best for the race because it insures the survival of the fittest in every department. We accept and welcome therefore, as conditions to which we must accommodate ourselves, great inequality of environment, the concentration of business, industrial and commercial in the hands of a few, and the law of competition between these as being not only beneficial, but essential for the future progress of the race."Okay and here is the old school definition for philanthropy in the same context:"It is a law, as certain as any of the others named, that men possessed of this peculiar talent for affair, under the free play of economic forces, must, of necessity, soon be in receipt of more revenue than can be judiciously expended upon themselves; and this law is as beneficial for the race as the others."She talks about the rise in power of organized labor and mutual aid networks (1870s/1880s) and cites the Haymarket bombing (also called “affair” or “riot”)during the fight for the 10 hour workday Fair Labor Standards Act of (she was right) 1938 Berkeley students help us wrap our monkey brains around the concept of a Billion Consider: Philanthropy and nonprofits as: a political system, an economic system, a culturally informed system. We discuss Amazon's policy to penalize workers if they don't work fast enough, and connect it to TER's recent episode feat. Teddy Schleifer and how MacKenzie Scott (was Bezos) can't give money away fast enough because of her investments (in Amazon and these extractive practices for ex) Donor Advised Funds. One day I'll write an article about it but we discuss it here and in S2:E6 with Teddy Schleifer. Very important to learn about if you dunno… Heather Infantry, and the TER episode Disrupting Your Community Foundation was named. She's a badass and we are so appreciative of her work! "We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable, but then so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words." - Ursula LeGuin Consider: Within our work, who are we investing in? “...when we dig into the actual complexities our communities, our networks will fall apart unless we trust and have genuine relationships with each other outside of work. So, are we investing in that?” Things get heavy here, as we talk about the murder of Seattle resident Charleena Lyles, who was murdered, while pregnant, with three of her children home, by police. What is not covered in reports is the relationship to the nonprofit housing she was living in. Dr. David Ragland is an inspirational figure and activist in the new reparations and reconciliation movements…and there is so much GOLD in this episode and so many references...it will take longer than I have capacity for to document it all for this episode. That’s the beauty we get when talking with professional educators. Here are major themes:Dr. David Ragland...Is co-founder of The Truth Telling ProjectDirector of the Grassroots Reparations CampaignIs recognized for his research on advocacy through Georgetown U’s Advocacy LabsInducted into the Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse CollegeSenior Bayard Rustin Fellow at the Fellowship for Reconciliationa board member for the Peace and Justice Studies Association...and he talks about how the Ferguson uprising is central to his story. Check out these SIX articles he’s written for YES! Magazine:Part 1: Reparations Are A Peace TreatyPart 2: With Reparations, We Must Demand Repair - and Heal OurselvesPart 3: On Reparations, Let Impacted Communities Lead the WayPart 4: Beyond Compensation for ReparationsPart 5: A Culture Shift Can Only Happen With Reparations and Truth TellingPart 6: He mentions that he hasn’t written yet! But we also found a much earlier article from 2017 - In Truth and Reconciliation, First Things First - The TruthThese are the five areas outlined by the UN for reparation:CompensationRestitutionSatisfactionGuarantees of Non-RepeatHealingNeed to know:HR 40: HR 40 is proposed legislation - the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act. The legislation, which was first introduced nearly 30 years ago, establishes a commission to examine slavery and discrimination in the United States from 1619 to the present and recommend appropriate remedies. It refers to the broken promise of 40 acres and a mule, to freed slaves, by General Sherman, in 1865. In the US there has never been significant truth and reconciliation actions taken for enslavement or for native american genocide, as there have been in other countries like South Africa has, for apartheid. The newly elected Congresswoman Corey Bush (Missouri) and Dr. Ragland co-founded the Truth Telling Project with her after meeting during the Ferguson protests.Resmaa Menakem is mentioned and of course we love his body of work including his book “My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending our Hearts and Bodies” which Fleur Larsen mentioned in Season 1. You can check out his interview with Krista Tippet too.Dr. Ragland talks about our mutual friendEdgar Villanueva and the Decolonizing Wealth Project as well as Liberated Capital, a reparations giving circle...Reparations is the repair of moral and material harm. The Truth Telling Project: A truth process or healing, created as a response to police violence. In this episode we say the names of these remembered folx who have been murdered by police and those whose names are not said, will not be forgotten. I’ve tried to link to pieces that share a bit about who they were...Tamir Rice, objects of careMike Brown, rebuilt memorialKajieme Powell, anniversary marchMa’Khia Bryant, vigilGeorge Floyd, sacred spaceSandra Bland, memorialAnd this is my favorite quote, because we, societally, never talk about what was stolen...and often we refer to it as bringing “civilization” right? DR: "I'm kidnapping you Kuta Kente. Now, your name is Toby. Your religion is Christianity. And you can't play drum no more. You can't cook the food you ate no more. Your kids are going to be slaves, and their kids are going to be slaves.”MM: “And they will learn nothing of your culture previously because it will be outlawed for you to practice it.”NOTE: So we’re learning that this podcast is becoming part of university curriculum across the US and Canada! Lock the door, it's part 2 of 3 in our annual Halloween Spooktacular! We're so excited to have the wonderful Gena Radcliffe (co-host of Kill by Kill and writer for The Spool) join us to talk about the bizarre story of Spring-Heeled Jack. Zach has The Boss on the brain, Brian dives into the robust Victorian justice system, and Gena tells us of brand-new invention, you know, for kids.*NOTE* So, there is a slight audio problem with this episode. One of the tracks accidentally exported with a click track, and by the time we caught it, it was too late to get rid of completely. We did the best we could, but it is noticeable at times. BUT! This is episode was so much fun and we hope it doesn't bother you.
NOTE: So this episode aged quickly. Paola and her friend recorded this on 7 Mar, a full month after Singapore went on Code Orange, and two weeks before Europe became the epicenter. It was probably before WHO announced that #Covid-19 is officially a pandemic. At that time Singapore has gotten used to their new normal, and there was no expectation that this will even spread across the world. #SocialDistancing and #FlattentheCurve hasn’t entered our daily convos yet. So yes, the general sentiments on this pod are now insensitive and out of touch. Our deepest apologies. We’ve decided to keep this part in because...hell, we were so f*cking stupid two weeks ago and we need to be reminded that we are stupid, and also to show how quickly things can change. Times are changing, and we need to adapt fast, or people will die ______________________ ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION Paola’s back! After a 3-month+ hiatus from the world at large, Paola finally decided to break her routine to ride a different bus to visit her friend Laurie. They had a quick chat about the #coronavirus in Singapore (time will change), and to discuss how it was like to be a black-French woman in the country. They talk about how she went about looking for work (so different from Paola’s), how she made herself comfortable, and of course, racism (time will change). Scattered in between are SG shoutouts (I think :P)

Joel Mathis is here! And Jason Keezer is still here, too! We do an LFK deep dive this episode with Joel Mathis’s Week Ago Today Corner where he covers the downtown protests. Then we take a long look at newspaper journalism today which focuses mostly on the local LFK paper and its editor, Chad Lawhorn. Didn’t take a lot of notes since we didn’t hit a lot of topics but I did write the phrase “stupidity and unpredictability is a dangerous cocktail” down. You’ll have to listen to find out the context! (Editor’s Note: So, we were having a bunch of trouble with our recording program glitching and in our efforts to fix it we created another problem we didn’t notice until it was too late. So, the sound on this episode isn’t going to be great. Sorry, we suck!) Whether you live in LFK or not, vote online for us for Best of Lawrence! Want to see the Deuce live? Jason Keezer is back and Will is celebrating with around a minute of pregame techno for the opening, unfazed by the fact that repeated recording issues make it the fifth time he’s attempting it. This may have been a mistake as Keezer gets so hyped his opening gambit is to spit in the face of god! Then we get an Improv Update: The Guild Theater has moved to the Lawrence Creates Maker’s Space at 9th and New Jersey in LFK where they continue to do improve shows every Friday night at 8! Still riding high, Keezer handles Marketing Corner with a dream of giant Fruit Roll-Ups. Following Will getting mugged by the person he trusts most, we bring it on home with Fucking Yourself Sports Corner, Nelson is an Everyman Hero Corner and the Difficulties of Fruit Candy Snacking Corner. All this and a drop in from next week’s guest, Joel Mathis! Ellen Evert Hopman Joined RevKess for a conversation about her book-to-film project for Priestess of the Forrest. You can learn more about that project at her Patreon page. You can learn more about Ellen and Druidry in general at her website. Due to a scheduling conflict for this show, KaliSara was unable to join RevKess to talk about the intended topic. Ellen stayed on the air a bit longer than original schedule to help fill some of the time. A huge thanks to her! KaliSara will be back next week. Then she and RevKess can talk the topic that was intended for tonight's original show. All is good in the world of PMPChannel. Do not worry. Technical difficulties have plagued us the last two weeks, but we are getting a handle on them. Check back next week for our show! NOTE: So as not to change the url of this episode, we are not changing the title at this time.
Note: So sorry about the extra “outro” about 30 minutes in. No charge. Tough for a perfectionist but…I’m gonna “leave it like it is…nevermind the turpentine, “as David Wilcox puts it. This is Part 1 of a new series called Big Sky Country. Join Dana and I as we re-live our recent trip-of-a-lifetime to Montana, Wyoming […]
We spent a lot of time at the end of last year talking about how to write someone else’s review. What should you do to prepare for your own?Think of it this way. Suppose you had three folks working for you, and one of the three spent a couple of hours over the previous months preparing for their time with you. They had reviewed the entire year, prepared better information for you for their review, and had taken their time writing their self-evaluation, including specific data to support their points.Wouldn’t that be impressive? If there were a close call to be made, might it go in your direction? In this cast, we walk you through everything YOU need to do to prepare for YOUR review with YOUR boss. And if you think it’s too early, think again – the timeline is THREE MONTHS! ;-)And, by the way, during the show we promised a couple of things. You'll find all of these in the Manager Tools website under Tools section under Preparing for Your Review Documents (http://www.manager-tools.com/preparing_for_your_review_documents/). 1) A complete transcript of the entire show 2) A Powerpoint presentation (in PDF form) with a detailed outline of the review preparation process 3) A detailed note-taking form to guide you through the process. Folks, no note-taking required ... we've done all the work for you. As we discussed on the discussion boards, these are examples of what you'll get with our premium membership program ... which will be announced shortly!Note: So everyone can get a look at the documents associated with this podcast, we're making this month's member-only cast available to ALL listeners. Enjoy!
