Answer that insomnia study ad and beware of griffins because we are checking back into Hill House for our second Jan de Bont film in as many weeks: 1999's "don't call it a remake," The Haunting. Joining us for an episode that immediately goes off the rails and into angry rant territory are five-time returning champions, Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe of Kill By Kill podcast. We have *lots* of questions: where's the bisexuality? Why is the body count so low? How much should Steven Spielberg be blamed? If Crain is part of the house, then why isn't he everywhere? Oh, and who the hell called Eleanor in the first place?! Poor Lili Taylor...and poor us! Questions? Comments? Snark? After a brief venture into crime thrillers, David Cronenberg made a return to the body horror subgenre with 2022's Crimes of the Future. He brought along his current go-to actor, Viggo Mortensen, to tell the story of an aging performance artist whose partner…uses an eXistenZ style device to cut out the extra organs he grows regularly. As one does on a Tuesday evening.I am joined by the incredibly funny and thoughtful Gena Radcliffe (from Kill by Kill Podcast and AOAS's very own White Ladies in Crisis) to go deep into this film's message about aging, illness and disease, disability, and evolution.Connect with Gena> Instagram: @genadoesthings | Substack > Kill By Kill Podcast | Kill by Kill Patreon Want to share your thoughts on Crimes of the Future or suggest a film to cover? During the height of lockdowns and uncertainty in the summer of 2020, a little movie hit Shudder. New movies hit the streaming service all the time, but this was a big deal because it was made during the pandemic with all its cast and crew sheltering in place. HOST was one of the few new movies we got during this period, and while it's firmly rooted in our fears and worries during this time, it gave fans something new to watch and discuss during a time when we desperately needed it. HOST tells the story of a group of friends that anger the spirit realm during a virtual seance. Mike has great company this week as he's joined by guests Gena Radcliffe (KIll By Kill), Nichole Goble (Bodies in Horror), and Terry Mesnard (Scarred For Life, Gayley Dreadful) to talk about this movie and all the things WE did and the spaces we tried to fill in order to stay sane while locked down. From Animal Crossing marathons, backyards converted to cinemas, drunken script readings over zoom and so many more things we never thought we'd have to do, it was a wild time. Beware the moon, listeners! This week, we're taking a break from the format and covering a one-off movie, and it just happens to be Mike's favorite horror movie of all time: John Landis' An American Werewolf in London. Lindsay needed to take the week off for TIFF, so Mike's brought on a pair of fantastic guests to fill her shoes, KiIll By Kill's Gena Radcliffe joins us to discuss how this movie turned her into a lifelong horror fan, and Daily Grindhouse's Jessica Scott is on board to talk about how much this movie has meant to her over the years. Long time listeners are in for a treat as Mike goes off on why Werewolf is indirectly responsible for his marriage.

This is episode was so much fun and we hope it doesn't bother you.
On this week's episode, we're evoking the spirit of American Beauty with lesbian director Jamie Babbit's incest drama/thriller The Quiet. Thankfully we've got Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe of the Kill by Kill podcast to help us unpack all of the lurid melodrama of this Elisha Cuthbert/Camilla Belle stinker.Where did this snooze worthy film go wrong: the languid pacing? The atrocious dialogue? Aiming for prestige instead of embracing queerness and camp?In between bouts of maniacal laughter about milkshakes, masturbation and Belle's complete lack of screen presence, we never quite reach consensus (Trace *likes* this film...but can't explain why!). CW: discussion of sexual assault and violence The Nightingale, Jennifer Kent's follow-up to her 2014 cult horror hit The Babadook, is a rough watch -- an intense, harrowing tale of revenge and resilience that stirs up blood and conversation in equal measure. The story of Claire (Aisling Franciosi), an Irish convict in colonial-era Tasmania whose husband and baby are murdered in a brutal rape and assault by uncaring British soldiers, The Nightingale captures her efforts to catch up to the traveling murderers with the help of a similarly-spurned aborigine named Billy (Baykali Ganambarr, in his first film role). Filmed in the stark greys and browns of the Tasmanian woods, their plight confined to a terrifyingly boxed-in aspect ratio, Kent's feature is as gorgeously grim as it is controversial in its content. Unlike The Babadook, it's a horror film of a different kind, one centered on man's inhumanity to man and the cyclical nature of vengeance. And of course, it's anchored by two arresting performances, from Francoisi's dynamic ferocity to Ganambarr's dangerous mix of acerbic wit and ancestral trauma. It also might be one of the best films of the year (read our review by Gena Radcliffe to see why). As The Nightingale moves from the festival circuit to wider release, I sat down for separate chats with Aisling Franciosi and Baykali Ganambarr about the film -- coming to their respective roles, their characters' relationship with male violence and British colonialism, and the challenging conversations this film brings out in people. Take a listen! (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. Thanks to Overcast for sponsoring this episode!)

A.T. White's feature film debut Starfish is a curious, indescribable animal - an intriguing, inscrutable mix of alien invasion thrillers, ennui-soaked indie movies about beautiful sad people listening to beautiful sad songs, and Charlie Kaufman-esque breakdowns of the cinematic medium itself. The story of a young woman (Virginia Gardner) returning to her small town to mourn the death of her close childhood friend (voiced by Christina Masterson amid a series of mixtapes), only to find herself as the last line of defense against an army of interdimensional creatures, Starfish puts on a lot of hats, its juggling of tones and genres part of its curious appeal. It's everything from 10 Cloverfield Lane to Silent Hill to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, wrapped up in an intriguingly experimental (and frequently gorgeous) package. (You can read Gena Radcliffe's review of the film for The Spool here.) To talk about this incredibly difficult-to-describe film, I sat down in-studio with White during his visit to Chicago (it premiered at Facets Cinematheque two weeks ago) to discuss the origins of the project, the ever-changing shapes it took in post-production, and the late friend for whom he made the film in the first place. Hey everyone! It's time for the next Childhood Favorite, this month hosted by Gena Radcliffe fof Kill BY Kill Podcast! Gena, like me, loved these books as a child, and unlike me, went on to become a fan of the TV show as well. I only saw a few minutes of one ep and decided it was not for me, and you won't believe what Gena tells me happens in the final episode (unless you've seen it in which case, whaaaaaat were they thinking???). I was a little worried about this reread, but it turns out that a lot of the more objectionable stuff is in her later book, Little House On The Prairie. In fact, this book is much more like Farmer Boy than it is like the other Little House books, because it's so much more focused on the how-tos of self-sufficiency. No wonder I like this one so much, it's practically a DIY book. Thanks a ton to all of you for listening, and to Gena for guesting! See you next month with Crazy Rich Asians and Little Women!

Being a superhero is never easy, but it's doubly difficult when you're dead. Such is the fate of Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min), co-star of Netflix's quirky, dark superhero drama The Umbrella Academy, which released its first season a couple of weeks ago. (You can read Gena Radcliffe's review of the season here.) Nicknamed "The Horror," Ben, like the rest of his superpowered siblings, were snatched from immaculate birth and trained at the titular Umbrella Academy by their cold, unfeeling father figure Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) to become a team of superheroes. However, the pressures of their powers and the emotional distance from their father led to no small number of dysfunction - including Ben's untimely (and, for the audience at least, unexplained) death by the time the series begins. But thanks to his brother (and medium) Klaus (Robert Sheehan), we get to see Min's Ben tag along with the ragtag group of misfit heroes, a warm counterpoint to Klaus' drugged-out quirks and a stark reminder of the many ways this family has let each other down. It's a role that comes with its fair share of challenges, and Min was kind enough to sit down for a quick interview to talk about playing a dead guy who can only interact with one other person on set, the mysteries behind his character's untimely end, and what he'd like to see out of Ben if Umbrella Academy goes to a second season.
