Welcome to Episode 286 of the Spun Today Podcast, the show anchored in writing but truly unlimited in its scope. I'm your host, Tony Ortiz, and today we're diving into something both personal and nostalgic: a throwback tribute episode to my good friend and Spun Today alum, Pablo Mosquera Jr. In this heartfelt installment, we revisit one of our annual beach day recordings—this one taking place on Coney Island during that odd window in the summer of 2020, right in the midst of the COVID pandemic. Pablo and I reflect on everything from the challenges and isolation of lockdown, the mental health impact of working from home, and our predictions about the ever-evolving work landscape, to our perennial struggles getting to Governor's Island for a bike ride and, of course, our shared love of breaking the monotony with a little weekday hooky at the beach. Expect a conversation that ranges far and wide, just like the show itself. We cover road trips, favorite drinks, and the transformative power of routine escapes—plus the creative, life-affirming benefits of unplugging from work and leaning into tradition, even during uncertain times. There's even a story about a real-life lifeguard rescue and a heap of pop culture moments, from The Sopranos to Patrick Swayze classics, all through the unique lens of creativity, inspiration, and the everyday writer's perspective. So whether you're here for the writing talk, the laughs, or some much-needed motivation, this episode invites you to reminisce, recharge, and most of all, keep spinning creativity into your life—no matter what the world throws your way. Let's get into it. The Spun Today Podcast is a Podcast that is anchored in Writing & Random Rants, but unlimited in scope. Give it a whirl. Looks like both conference finals are nearing an end. So we dissect what has happened so far. We have some on show therapy to unpack our ambivalence, possibly hate, towards the OKC Thunder. We talk some Project Marvel and the upcoming demise of CBD in Texas, without sports betting to blunt the hurt.
It's 2025. And this Leftist Tech Conference (BSDCan, sponsored by Netflix and Apple) is requiring medical grade masks. More from The Lunduke Journal: https://lunduke.com/ This is a public episode. Now that we've finished Waterloo Road, we thought it would be fun to go right back to the start and take another look at that opening episode. Does it play any differently after five years of talking about this absurd show every week? Does Luke have a new love for the genius of BBC classroom drama? We also talk endlessly about our respective weddings, if that's your jam.*** If you want to subscribe to the PATREON page, visit http://www.patreon.com/waterlooroadpod/ for full details. There are thieves in life that rob us and steal our energy, power, and joy – things like addiction, anxiety, fear, and resentment. In John 10:10, Jesus said, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. But I have come that they may have life and have it to the full." So how do we break free from these thieves to start having the full life that Jesus promises?

Five years ago, on March 19th, the Governor issued the stay at home order California needed to survive the Covid pandemic. Covid changed our lives. Some of those changes, like Zoom, are here to stay. Assembly Democrats legislative initiatives helped Californians survive the pandemic. On this episode we look back at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and talk with current lawmakers, including Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel, about their personal Covid stories, how it changed the way the legislature works and what needs to be done to prevent another pandemic.

Subscriber-only episodeIn today's episode, I'm joined by the incredible Daniel Roytas, a Naturopath and author of the eye-opening book *Can You Catch A Cold?* We're diving deep into some huge questions that have been swirling around since 2020—the kind that make you stop and go, *Wait… what's really going on here?* We're unpacking contagion theory, germ theory, and that big question: Can you actually pass on or catch a disease from someone else? Plus, we dig into the existence of viruses and whether the science behind virology stands up to scientific scrutiny. Here's the thing—Daniel isn't here to tell you what to think. He's laying out the scientific evidence so you can make up your own mind about what these theories really mean. And as always, I'm encouraging you to do your own research and come to your own conclusions. But honestly? The evidence Daniel shares may cause you to rethink everything you thought you knew about infectious diseases and viruses. Could these be some of the biggest misconceptions—or even outright frauds—in human history? If that's true, the implications are *massive* for our health, freedoms, and even the medications we're being pushed to take. This is a conversation that could truly change how you see the world. So, grab a cup of tea and let's get into it! The years of pandemic and lockdown are still working powerfully on us from the inside. But we have trouble acknowledging this, much less metabolizing it. This conversation with Christine Runyan, which took place in the dark middle of those years, helps make sense of our present of still-unfolding epidemic distress — as individuals, as communities, as a species. She has cultivated a reverence for the human nervous system. She tells truths about our bodies that western medicine itself is only fitfully learning to see. This quiet conversation is not just revelatory, but healing and calming. It holds startling prescience about some of what we're navigating now. And it offers self-compassion and simple strategies for finding ease within ourselves — and with each other — as we live forward from here.Christine Runyan is a clinical psychologist and professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at UMass Chan Medical School. She is also a certified mindfulness teacher, and she co-founded and co-leads Tend Health, a clinical consulting practice focused on the mental well-being of medical and health care workers.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.This show originally aired in March 2021.______Sign up for The Pause — a Saturday morning companion newsletter to the On Being podcast season, and our mailing list for news and invitations all year round.
