Today's guest is Zoe Chance.Zoe is one of the world's foremost researchers and speakers on ethical influence and persuasion. She's a beloved Yale professor who teaches the most popular course at the School of Management: Mastering Influence and Persuasion. Her new book, Influence Is Your Superpower: The Science of Winning Hearts, Sparking Change, and Making Good Things Happen, is based on that course.Zoe is also a dear friend and collaborator who helped me craft my now famous TEDx talk back in 2015. She is the first ever repeat guest on this podcast, having joined me way back in Season 1 when this show was called One New Person.Interestingly, that interview came at a time when Zoe was at the very crossroads that eventually led to this book. And that's where this conversation picks up.We spoke about doing what you love, how to write an academic book that feels conversational and friendly, and why the book had to change completely in response to COVID. Diving into the book itself we focused largely on the power of framing as a tool of influence, which includes a discussion of mind readers, magicians, and gorillas. We also touched on how timing can be used to positively influence someone, and offer advice on how to stop turning people off by asking to “pick their brain” or “buy them a cup of coffee.”Finally, Zoe offers one critical piece of advice to young professionals trying to navigate this crazy, ever-changing world.I had the honor of reading Influence Is Your Superpower cover to cover as an advance publisher's copy, and my one-sentence review is:This book is Robert Cialdini for the kindness generation.Grab your copy of Influence Is Your Superpower here: https://amzn.to/3qX4WrU Connect with Zoe:https://ZoeChance.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/zoebchance/

Pam Paydos is a beloved Connecticut-based entrepreneur and restaurateur who long-time listeners of this podcast will remember. In fact, Pam was the very first guest ever on this show, back when it was called One New Person. When everything shut down, restaurants were the first and most visible industry to pivot, shifting to take-out only and building the foundation of curbside pickup, now a mainstay in our culture. Can you remember a time without curbside pickup? In Pam’s case, it was even trickier. Her current restaurant is a bistro and bakery, designed around a small-town ambience and community tables in a very tight space. She didn’t have the systems or staff to do take-out.But almost a year later, Popover Bistro and Bakery remains a pillar of the community. In this conversation Pam walks us through the nightmare of her Pivot. Pay attention to how her unwavering commitment to staying alive kept her going, even in the darkest of times.A word before you listen: In true COVID fashion, we had a lot of Internet difficulties during this particular recording. Due to an intermittent Internet connection, I had to ask Pam to repeat her stories many times, which was frustrating for both of us. I was already asking her to relive incredibly difficult and emotional moments that were still fresh. I felt awful asking her to repeat them. As such, this episode will feel a little pieced together. I did the best I could to take the highest quality pieces of the recording and splice them into a coherent conversation.Still, there’s SO much good stuff here. Thank you Pam, for being so understanding in the midst of chaos.Connect with PamPopover Bistro & Bakery website: https://www.popoversimsbury.com/

Carolyn Schrier is the Director of Marketing for Mitzvah Market, a comprehensive resource for Jewish families planning their Bar & Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Carolyn and I met just a few years ago at one of their vendor showcases, where families get to interact with DJs, caterers, entertainers, decorators - if you've ever been to a wedding or bridal expo, it's like that, but for 13 year-olds. In this episode we discuss how Carolyn went from a degree in economics to a career in service of the Jewish community, why we should refrain from judging how others choose to celebrate special occasions, and of course, her story of a chance encounter with lasting impact. And by the way, her story literally moved me to tears over and over again during post production. Kasey Quaglia is the studio coordinator at Summit Studios, a hip performing arts center in Manchester, Connecticut. Kasey and I met in 2010 when I walked into Summit looking to offer children's magic instruction. Although we started as colleagues, Kasey quickly became one of my dearest friends. She was even a bridesmaid in my wedding just a few years ago. Kasey is one of the kindest, most generous people you'll ever meet. This episode covers the day-to-day responsibilities of a studio coordinator, how an art degree unexpectedly led to mastering human connection, and of course, Kasey's story of a chance encounter with lasting impact. Show Notes -Here is Seth Godin's life changing book Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? -Kasey recalled Richard Linklater's film Waking Life: "Hey, can we do that again? I know we haven't met but... I don't want to be an ant, you know?" Related Links Summit Studios Performing Arts Center
