SEND ME A TEXT MESSAGE NOWThe resistance grows stronger with each passing day as I witness a world spiraling deeper into madness. From international conflicts to domestic power grabs, episode 99 of "A World Gone Mad" delivers powerful insights into news stories that demand our attention.Donald Trump's "joke" about wanting to become the next Pope might seem like harmless banter on the surface, but it reveals a troubling pattern of an individual obsessed with accumulating power by any means necessary. Even in jest, his words expose an authoritarian mindset that continues to threaten democratic institutions worldwide.More alarmingly, nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan stand at the precipice of wider conflict after India launched strikes targeting what they described as "terrorist infrastructure" in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. With Pakistan vowing retaliation, this volatile situation demands urgent diplomatic intervention before it escalates beyond control. Meanwhile, Apple appears poised to challenge Google's search dominance by reshaping Safari to focus on AI-powered search engines, potentially ending a $20 billion annual arrangement and fragmenting the search market in ways that could transform how we access information. The episode also examines Trump's tense meeting with Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney, where his continued references to annexing Canada demonstrate a fundamental disregard for national sovereignty. Despite these concerning developments, I conclude with an inspiring story about an Ohio orchestra conductor with Parkinson's disease who received revolutionary brain stimulation treatment, allowing him to return to his passion.Join me Monday for my MILESTONE 100th episode as I continue documenting these extraordinary times. Humanitarian diplomacy is a broad landscape and possibly one with internal contradictions. For example, traditionally humanitarian agencies have sought to distance themselves from mediation and human rights activism. The concept of humanitarian diplomacy requires at least an end to these silos. But how is the distance to be managed? In this special podcast – recorded at a recent Sussex Development Lecture – Lewis Sida, IDS Honorary Associate and Co-Director of the IDS-led Humanitarian Learning Centre is in conversation with Martin Griffiths, former Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator of the United Nations. Martin brings extensive experience as a global mediator and his work has made him a key figure in humanitarian diplomacy. In this podcast Martin presents his own definition of the concept which includes: independent and principled mediation to end conflicts; humanitarian negotiation for access and protection; and advocacy against impunity and violations of international humanitarian law. This podcast is a must-listen for those working and studying in humanitarian issues – particularly in today's global climate where conflict continues and humanitarian advocacy is needed more than ever. SEND ME A TEXT MESSAGE NOWDemocracy hangs in the balance as Trump's second term begins with a flurry of controversial decisions that test constitutional boundaries. Trump claims progress on Ukraine-Russia peace talks, yet Putin continues bombing Ukrainian hospitals despite supposed ceasefire agreements. The stark reality is that Putin seems more interested in reclaiming his status on the world stage than achieving actual peace, while Trump may be unwittingly empowering China through his unconventional diplomatic approach.Foreign policy challenges extend beyond Ukraine, with Trump authorizing strikes against Houthis in Yemen and watching as the Israel-Hamas conflict intensifies. Meanwhile, the domestic landscape grows increasingly concerning as Trump targets perceived enemies - expelling ambassadors, stripping Secret Service protection from Biden's children, and attempting to invalidate presidential pardons through dubious legal interpretations. The judiciary has emerged as a critical bulwark against executive overreach, with courts challenging Trump's deportation efforts, transgender military ban, and climate program cancellations. When Trump called for judges to be impeached for ruling against him, Chief Justice Roberts delivered a rare public rebuke, emphasizing that impeachment is not an appropriate response to judicial disagreements. Most troubling perhaps is the expanding influence of unelected figures like Elon Musk, whose Pentagon visit raised serious questions about private citizens accessing sensitive government information. Even environmental initiatives haven't escaped Trump's reach - a nationwide tree planting program was canceled because it allegedly contained diversity and inclusion elements, highlighting the administration's determination to eliminate any DEI-related programs regardless of their actual purpose or community benefits. He is the author of "The Wake Up Call" on global jihad and antisemitism, father of an IDF soldier who served during the October 7th conflict, and a security consultant on extremist ideologies THREE KEY TALKING POINTS 1. Columbia Crisis: Institutional Failure with National Implications. Columbia's administration has allowed antisemitism to flourish while claiming to protect all students. Jewish students have been threatened and intimidated while the university hides behind bureaucracy. These protests aren't about human rights—they're endorsements of Hamas ideology on American soil. 2. Trump's $400M Funding Cut: A Necessary Response. President Trump's decisive action sends the message that universities enabling antisemitism shouldn't receive taxpayer money. This isn't about free speech—it's about basic protections that would be immediately implemented for any other minority group. 3. The Progressive Double Standard Exposed. The same administrators who mandate DEI training now enable antisemitism. The chant 'From the River to the Sea' is a call for Jewish elimination, yet it's tolerated under the banner of 'activism.' The hypocrisy is staggering and dangerous. Russia has launched a devastating aerial assault on Ukraine—nearly 70 missiles and 200 drones targeting critical infrastructure—mere days after the US suspended vital military aid and intelligence sharing with Kyiv. President Zelensky continues pursuing peace while caught between Trump's unpredictable stance and Putin's aggression.Trump's diplomatic approach has European leaders frantically preparing for a future they once considered unthinkable—defending the continent without American support. With the US president casting doubt on NATO commitments, the EU has proposed an unprecedented $862 billion defense plan, what French President Macron called a response to an "existential threat." This dramatic pivot represents Europe's reluctant acknowledgment that American security guarantees can no longer be taken for granted.Domestically, the administration's plans to dismantle the Department of Education have created uncertainty for the $1.64 trillion student loan portfolio, while HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. promotes unconventional measles treatments despite scientific consensus. Meanwhile, the arts community faces upheaval as the Kennedy Center—historically bipartisan—sees Trump installed as chairman, prompting "Hamilton" to cancel performances through 2026. These stories, alongside reports of America's disappearing butterflies and a heated Musk-Rubio confrontation during a cabinet meeting, paint a portrait of institutions under pressure and norms being challenged at every turn. Gospel Sanity in a World Gone Mad – This is what Ray Ortlund Jr. aims to offer to the next generation of pastors and leaders. In this conversation with Mike, he discusses the profound value of remembering his own mortality, the importance of gathering and "gospelling" young men, and the encouragement that Christ Himself is preaching through us as we exposit the Word. Ray also shares insights from his latest book, co-authored with Sam Allberry, You're Not Crazy - Gospel Sanity for Weary Churches. In this practical guide, seasoned pastors Ray Ortlund and Sam Allberry help weary leaders renew their love for ministry by equipping them to build a gospel-centered culture into every aspect of their churches. They emphasize that while healthy doctrine is crucial, failing to nurture a healthy culture can lead to frustration, division, and even unbiblical practices. The book provides Scripture-focused advice on honesty, honour, preaching, leadership, and mission, helping leaders regain a beautiful, Christ-centered vision for their ministries. This episode, originally released earlier this year, was the most downloaded episode of 2024. We're re-releasing it this December to celebrate its impact and ensure even more people benefit from Ray's wisdom and encouragement.  Resources Mentioned:  You're Not Crazy book: https://www.crossway.org/books/youre-not-crazy-tpb/  You're Not Crazy Podcast:  https://open.spotify.com/show/2gjO1xAJVSomEdK6dVwnQh?si=1f98570e2bfd4972  Father Mapple's Sermon from Moby Dick: https://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/42/moby-dick/634/chapter-9-the-sermon/  J.I. Senator Joe Manchin's bewildering suggestion to Biden adds another layer of intrigue, challenging the boundaries of political propriety and prompting me to question the very nature of justice and political strategy. Meanwhile, the geopolitical chessboard is heating up as the U.S. and China lock horns over semiconductor technology, with Beijing bristling at new export controls. Join us on the season premiere of Wednesdays with Watson as we explore how to navigate these tumultuous times with faith and resilience. In our first chapter, we confront the pervasive sense of hopelessness and anxiety fueled by global and national crises. We emphasize that true hope doesn't come from political leaders or legislation but from the power of God working through our hearts. By reflecting on biblical wisdom, we find strength and learn how to maintain mental health amidst the chaos. In the second chapter, we delve into the importance of trusting in God rather than earthly rulers or circumstances. Discover how biblical stories of resilience and divine protection can guide us through today's anxieties and fears. We highlight Philippians 4, providing practical advice on focusing on what is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy. This approach helps us to maintain our mental well-being and fulfill our mission to spread the gospel. We also explore how spiritual practices and scripture can anchor us in faith, offering a beacon of hope even in the darkest times. Finally, we shift our focus to the significance of community, church, and counseling in maintaining peace and faith. Personal anecdotes illustrate how letting faith and community support provide hope and stability is crucial. We offer practical steps for navigating the turmoil, such as controlling news consumption and avoiding stressful discussions about elections. Ending on a powerful note of transformative grace, we remind ourselves that we are called to live a renewed life, made for more than the chaos surrounding us. It's been an interesting July, to say the least.   On July 13, former president Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt while addressing a crowd at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. The aftermath of this event is still being talked about, as ripples have been felt throughout the political landscape here in the U.S.   Then on July 26, the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games took place in Paris, France. And let's just say, the reviews were varied... The most noteworthy segment, in case you missed it, involved drag queens that was variously claimed to depict a feast with Dionysus—the ancient Greek god of wine—or what seemed to some people as a parody of The Last Supper. However it was meant by the ceremony producers, it was widely criticized as being a mockery of Christianity.   As Christians, how do we make sense of it all? What does the Christian worldview tell us about living for Christ in the midst of the uncertain times in which we live?
