About This Episode: What happens when a sports medicine physician rediscovers her inner theatre kid during a global pandemic? In this episode, Phil sits down with Dr. Janet McMordie, a physician, actor, podcast host, and Team Canada Paralympics doctor, for a genuinely surprising conversation about what it means to pursue two very different callings at once. Janet shares how Second City's free online improv classes for healthcare workers during COVID cracked open a creative life she'd tucked away during years of medical training. From community theatre up north to landing an agent at a showcase, her path back to the stage has been anything but conventional — and she's leaning into every messy, joyful step of it. Now Janet is producing and starring in a remount of Rosamund Small's acclaimed play Vitals at Factory Theatre (May 2 - 10), directed by Alaine Hutton. She opens up about what it's like to hire yourself when the industry won't, the humbling surprise of discovering that the script is only 10–20% of the show, and why she believes theatre - real humans breathing the same air - is exactly what the world needs right now. This episode explores: How pandemic improv classes reignited Janet's lifelong love of performance What it's like to navigate the identity of being both Dr. McMordie and an actor Producing Vitals at Factory Theatre — finding funding through small businesses when grants fall short Being a Team Canada physician at the 2024 Paris Paralympics The politics of sport, the politics of theatre, and why artists can't just 'stay in their lane' And much more! He has provided research and consultancy services for Sport England, The Football Foundation, Positive Futures, and The Lord's Taverners.Dan is also passionate about physical activity in the outdoors and is currently engaged in research that explores issues of access and inclusion for underrepresented groups, and captures the social value of green space. The Centre for Social Justice in Sport & Society at Leeds Beckett University offers innovative methods to help sports organisations understand and evidence the true impact of their community programmes. Traditional key performance indicators (KPIs) often fall short in fully capturing the value and social impact of these initiatives. To address this, the Centre uses cutting-edge ripple effect mapping techniques, which involve gathering insights from all programme stakeholders to assess how, where, and why a programme makes a difference. These methods not only provide a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of a programme's impact but also allow organisations to present their achievements in an engaging and informative way. This approach ultimately supports greater programme efficiency and cost-effectiveness.Links:Centre of Social Justice in Sport and Society: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/research/centre-for-social-justice-in-sport-and-society/---- Please subscribe to the Sports for Social Impact Podcast wherever you get your podcast! This project started with a simple idea: what if fantasy football told the full story? Not just rushing yards and touchdowns, but backpacks donated, meals served, scholarships awarded, and lives changed. Now, with the Fantasy Football Draft Guide for Good, fans can see the causes players support off the field—right alongside their on-field stats.Built for both casual fans and die-hard fantasy veterans, the guide lets you sort players by position and by cause. Whether you care about youth development, mental health, hunger relief, or military and veteran support, you'll find players who share your values. The Fantasy Football for Good: Draft Guide was created by Joe Flynn as part of the George Washington University Sports Philanthropy Executive Certificate Program.Joe Flynn is a sports storyteller and nonprofit strategist focused on highlighting the human under the helmet. With over 3.5 million views across social media, he's built a platform dedicated to showcasing the off-the-field impact of athletes and the causes they support. Joe has helped raise more than $1 million for nonprofits and social impact organizations and is currently enrolled in George Washington University's Sport Philanthropy certificate program.Joe believes that sports can build global bridges when fans shift their mindset from “What can this player do for my team?” to “What can this player do for my community?”Links:Fantasy Football for Good Draft Guide: https://www.fantasyfootballforgood.com/---- Please subscribe to the Sports for Social Impact Podcast wherever you get your podcast! Andrew Gurza, host of Disability After Dark, joins the pod and shares about their experience navigating these times as a severely disabled, queer person. We talk about the power of sex work, Andrew's coming out journey, the unique challenges of accessing queer spaces as a disabled person and the double edged sword of anti-queer sentiment in disabled spaces. Andrew's approach of giving grace and educating with humor and radical transparency, while actively challenging ableist beliefs and institutionalized erasure of the experience of disabled people is powerful and palpable in everything they do. Our conversation with Andrew is all the things... enlightening, heartening, funny, and queer AF.Andrew Gurza (they/he) is an award winning Disability Awareness Consultant and the Chief Disability Officer and Co-founder of Bump'n, a sex toy company for and by disabled people.
