Jane Roos is deeply passionate about ensuring Canadian athletes have the resources they need to succeed on the world stage. Before founding CAN Fund, Jane was a promising track athlete whose career was cut short by a devastating car accident at the age of 19. This life-changing event inspired her to help other Canadian athletes who face challenges, not only with their training but also with the financial burden that comes with competing at the highest levels.Jane's achievements extend beyond her work with CAN Fund. She's been honored with the Live Olympic Award, an international recognition given to only 20 people, and has been named one of the most influential women in sport by CAAWS, now called Canadian women and sport. The Globe & Mail also selected her as one of the Most Influential People in Sport, and she received the Leadership in Sports Award at the 36th Canadian Sports Awards.Under Jane's leadership, CAN Fund has raised over $40 million and has directly supported 80% of Canadian athletes who have competed at the Olympic and Paralympic Games from Athens 2004 to Paris 2024. For over 20 years CAN Fund has been providing crucial financial support to the best athletic talent in Canada, helping them cover costs for training, coaching, nutrition, equipment, travel and basic living expenses. CAN Fund is a charity that offers 2 applications a year to which summer, winter, able-bodied and para athletes representing Canada on the world stage can apply.Links:CAN Fund: https://canadianathletesnow.ca/---- Please subscribe to the Sports for Social Impact Podcast wherever you get your podcast! Leave us a review and a 5 star rating to help bring others in the world of sports into the conversation! The Sports for Social Impact podcast was nominated for a Sports Podcast Award and Canadian Podcast Award.Send us an email at sportsforsocialimpact@gmail.com Linktree: https://linktr.ee/sportsforsocialimpactLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/sports-for-social-impactFollow us on Instagram (@SportsSocImpact) Follow us on Substack: https://substack.com/@sportssocimpactVisit our website at https://www.sportsforsocialimpact.com/

Andrew Gurza, host of Disability After Dark, joins the pod and shares about their experience navigating these times as a severely disabled, queer person. We talk about the power of sex work, Andrew's coming out journey, the unique challenges of accessing queer spaces as a disabled person and the double edged sword of anti-queer sentiment in disabled spaces. Andrew's approach of giving grace and educating with humor and radical transparency, while actively challenging ableist beliefs and institutionalized erasure of the experience of disabled people is powerful and palpable in everything they do. Our conversation with Andrew is all the things... enlightening, heartening, funny, and queer AF.Andrew Gurza (they/he) is an award winning Disability Awareness Consultant and the Chief Disability Officer and Co-founder of Bump'n, a sex toy company for and by disabled people. Andrew Gurza, an award-winning Disability Awareness Consultant and the Co-founder of Handi, a sex toy company that puts pleasure within reach for disabled people, joins us to tell three moving stories from his life. The first takes us to his early childhood to the moment that he really felt the emotional weight of his disability. This difficult story is interwoven with the wonderful humor Andrew is famous for. In the second story, he recounts the first time he had sex as a queer and disabled young man in college with such transparency and vulnerability that we feel everything right there with him; the excitement, the struggle, and the pain. And in his third story, he exuberantly rolls down the red carpet as his purpose and importance as a queer, disabled activist becomes crystal clear. In this interview, and as always, Andrew is brimming over with full tilt loveability, humor, and naughtiness in the best possible way. We hope you join us for this amazing episode of Open Deeply that allows us all to have a better idea of what it's like to be queer, disabled and a living testimony to the viral hashtag of his making, #DisabledPeopleAreHot.
