This week, we're talking boundaries—the invisible lines that protect our time, energy, and sanity (when we actually enforce them). Stef and Sarah unpack what boundaries really are (hint: not just saying “no”), how they show up in our bodies, our relationships, and our work—and why so many of us struggle to hold them. From family dynamics to friend drama, people-pleasing traps to food boundaries, they share real stories of what it takes to define and defend your limits without guilt. They also get into the psychology behind rigid vs. porous boundaries, how social conditioning makes it harder for some of us to draw the line, and why clear communication isn't just helpful—it's essential. If you've ever felt like setting a boundary makes you mean—or like you're constantly betraying yourself just to avoid conflict—this conversation is for you. Tune in for a candid, compassionate look at how to honor your needs and why boundaries aren't just protective… they're a form of kindness. 01:09 Defining Boundaries 02:20 Types of Boundaries 04:09 Personal Experiences with Boundaries 08:09 Boundaries in Relationships 10:32 Communicating Boundaries Effectively 11:41 Challenges in Setting Boundaries 13:11 Owning Your Boundaries 21:23 The Importance of Clear Communication 22:56 Setting Boundaries with Family 24:35 Navigating Boundaries in Friendships 26:41 Balancing Personal and Professional Boundaries 28:56 Understanding Boundaries in Therapy 34:57 Boundaries and Food Relationships 40:55 Concluding Thoughts on Boundaries Join our support community. How To Say No to a Startup Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. Investors receive pitches from startups almost every day. Many of these startups simply don't match the investment thesis of the investor. Here's how to say no to a startup. Respond with the same level of effort that the founder put into the outreach. For an automated email, simply don't respond. For a personalized email outreach, respond with a message “thank you for your outreach, this doesn't fit our investment thesis.  We look for” and explain your target area. For a warm introduction, respond with what you like about the deal, but admit this doesn't appear to be a fit. It's often the case that the founder will come back with more information. In this case, respond with feedback on how to make the deal more interesting. If the deal is missing key information, then advise the founder to include those key points.   This provides value to the interaction between the investor and the founder.    Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding.   This episode was prompted by a request from one of the members of my Women Leading community who asked how she could build more personal resilience around the impact of decisions she was making at work and be a little more “Teflon coated”.    Perhaps you relate – you need to make tough decisions as a leader but you take things to heart, you care about people and their wellbeing and sometimes the decisions you make can have significant impact on others.      Or perhaps you are the person who is implementing the decisions that others have made and cascading unwelcome news or making unpopular changes.  You may be involved in a restructure for example or taking a team member through performance management.    Now, I didn't want to call this ‘how to care less as a leader' because I don't think that those of us who care a lot would embrace the idea of caring less.  Caring, having empathy, being conscious of the impact of our decisions on people - these are all wonderful traits for a leader to have and may well be a huge strength of yours as a leader.    However, if caring has no boundaries around it then you could be heading towards sleepless nights, self-doubt and possibly even burnout.  In this episode I'm going to explore 3 insights and 3 tools and techniques to help you if you are someone who cares too much as a leader.    My name's Carla Miller, leadership coach, author and trainer. When I was sent a book called The Emotional Overdraft I instinctively knew that this was a topic that was going to resonate with me personally and you as listeners to this podcast.     An emotional overdraft is when you as a leader habitually overcome your employer's challenges at the cost of our own physical and mental health. Sound familiar?   I am seeing this happening a LOT at the moment with the women within my Women Leading community so I was excited to dive into the topic with the book's author Andy Brown.   We discussed: The cost of going too deep into your emotional overdraft How to start paying it back What behaviours or drivers create our emotional overdraft The role of management skills and influencing in changing a culture which relies on people being emotionally overdrawn How to approach urgency and filling short term gaps more strategically How the emotional overdraft shows up outside of work   My name's Carla Miller, leadership coach, author and trainer. Today's summer rewind is a re-release of one of our favourites that we keep coming back to. We'll be back in September with brand new interviews! This might come as a surprise, but telling people “no” isn't actually one of the seven deadly sins. Here's what actually happens when you say “no” to things you don't align with that consistently drain you: You open up all of the doors for the “HELL YES” opportunities to come flooding in!But if you're anything like us and tend towards people pleasing, creating boundaries can feel foreign. And that inherent desire to avoid conflict and keep the peace can often do more harm than good. That's why we've committed to learning how, and when, to prioritize our own needs, so we can show up as our best selves for all the wonderful things we say yes to. Because we can't do it all, and our time and energy are finite resources. There's a lot of talk, and a lot to be said, for the power of Yes, but No hasn't gotten the same star treatment and we think it's time to change that. From increasing productivity and preventing burnout to building healthy relationships, this week we're giving “No” the rebrand it deserves!Join us as we chat about:Overcoming the need to people-pleaseHow to rewire your brain to make different decisionsOur one exception for avoiding “no”The ways no has changed our lives and opened new doorsHow to set healthy boundaries and communicate effectivelyTips for getting better at saying noThe importance of honesty and vulnerabilityThe 3 questions to help you make any decisionWe hope this helps you harness the power of doing less shit that you don't enjoy, so you can make space for all the stuff that's worth it.For show notes and more adulting tips, visit: teachmehowtoadult.caSign up for our monthly adulting newsletter:teachmehowtoadult.ca/newsletter Follow us on the ‘gram:@teachmehowtoadultpodcast @yunggillianaire@cailynmichaanFollow us on TikTok:@teachmehowtoadult Sign up for our monthly adulting newsletter:teachmehowtoadult.ca/newsletter Follow us on the ‘gram:@teachmehowtoadultmedia@gillian.bernerFollow on TikTok: @teachmehowtoadult

The importance of setting boundaries and saying no, is crucial to good mental health and wellness. It's all too easy to say yes to everything, neglecting your own needs, especially if you are a people pleaser, and sometimes it feels like the easier option in the moment. However, setting and maintaining healthy boundaries will help you conserve your emotional energy and will put you in a far better mental state.  Michelle Elman, a five-board accredited life coach, author, broadcaster, public speaker and social media influencer has quickly established herself as the Queen of Boundaries. Michelle's most recent book ‘How To Say No' marks her debut as a children's author to which Cosmopolitan praised as one of the best books on mental health that everyone should read. It was due to the high demand from Michelle's adult book on boundaries ‘The Joy of Being Selfish' that this manuscript even exists, highlighting that this is an area many struggle with.  Michelle shares her thoughts with host Gabby, on why so many of us are bad at boundaries, and offers some first steps on how we can start to say no respectfully with kindness and confidence. Michelle also explains why self worth and self esteem are so important when it comes to boundary setting and her reasons why she believes that boundaries are the practice of self love. From increasing productivity and preventing burnout to building healthy relationships, this week we're giving “No” the rebrand it deserves!Join us as we chat about:Overcoming the need to people-pleaseHow to rewire your brain to make different decisionsOur one exception for avoiding “no” The ways no has changed our lives and opened new doorsHow to set healthy boundaries and communicate effectivelyTips for getting better at saying noThe importance of honesty and vulnerability The 3 questions to help you make any decisionWe hope this helps you harness the power of doing less shit that you don't enjoy, so you can make space for all the stuff that's worth it.For show notes and more adulting tips, visit: teachmehowtoadult.caSign up for our monthly adulting newsletter:teachmehowtoadult.ca/newsletter Follow us on the ‘gram:@teachmehowtoadultpodcast @yunggillianaire@cailynmichaanFollow us on TikTok:@teachmehowtoadult

The Second Phase Podcast - Personal Branding & Brand Marketing and Life Strategies for Success for Female Entrepreneurs

There may be times in which you feel your brain is not working properly, you can't learn fast enough, you don't understand things, or maybe you are tired of navigating negative thoughts. But if you learn to leverage your brain and its unique power, you will succeed. When you learn to leverage your brain you can change behavior patterns and shift negative thoughts to achieve more success in life and business. It's not how you learn, it's what you understand - leverage your brain to make understanding easier When it comes to learning, what happens inside your head is much more important than the way you learn. For example, using flashcards, mind mapping, and taking notes. If you can't explain a topic in your own words and in a way that you understand and in a simple language, you haven't actually integrated it. You haven't taken the unfamiliar and put it into a familiar context. Until you can do this, you can't understand things. As you hear something, think about what imagery comes to mind. Likewise, how would you explain it to a 5-year-old? Test your understanding of a topic. If the predictions of your understanding aren't accurate, ask yourself why. To improve understanding, leverage your brain and its unique abilities. Leverage your brain to apply understanding in your business and life When it comes to learning, Collin explained that people generally fall into 3 different personality types. The 3 learning personalities, or mindsets are: Hobbyist - learning just for fun Hoarder - learning just in case Hunter - learning just in time Young children typically fall into the hobbyist mindset. They are typically having fun while learning. Similarly, retirees fall into the hobbyist mindset. They spend time learning because they enjoy it and like the process. The hunter is learning for a very specific reason. They only care about what they need to learn and they block out everything else. Hunters recognize that what really matters is what matters to them in that specific moment. Most people fall into the hoarder mindset. They think that all information is valuable, but it may not be valuable at this moment in time. Hoarders like to have information just in case. They think that the information may be useful at some point in the future. They don't want to miss out on an opportunity to learn something. Hoarders seldom go deep into any subject. Every time they start to explore, they get distracted by something and want to learn about that. Their brains are full of disjointed information that isn't very useful because they are unsure how to apply the information. You can leverage your brain to focus better and shift away from the hoarder mindset. Leverage your brain to organize and discern what you learn In order to organize and discern what you learn you must systematize. Organize by what is valuable and important to you. You have to have a process for saying no. Identify what is most valuable and important for you right now and every time something else comes up, ask the question, what am I willing to say no to so that I am able to focus on this thing that is my priority? Collin reminded us that you have to say no before you can say yes. There is always an opportunity cost to saying yes. If you aren't cognizant of that, you will end up saying no to the important thing for the thing that distracted you and this will become a vicious cycle. This cycle prevents you from truly committing to things. You can divide your time between two things, and you can have multiple interests, but keep in mind, that your brain is now splitting its time. Having multiple priorities is not the same as having one priority that you are fully focused on. It is important to leverage your brain and control your thinking to prioritize. Robyn emphasized how this is similar to having 5 goals at one time. When you have multiple big goals instead of focusing on one or two, you aren't able to go all in on the goals to accomplish them. You end up being less productive when juggling multiple large goals. Learning to say no The hoarder mentality is never effective for learning or accomplishing your goals. Being in the hobbyist mindset is great because it's fun and an end in and of itself. Know what you are willing to say no to so that you can say yes to other things. Have criteria defined, here's why I am saying yes to this, and here's what would have to happen for me to say no? In order to be able to say no to things, you must have a hierarchy of values. If you can't define your values, you have nothing to base your decisions on. To begin, write down the first three values that come to mind, the three values you want to live by. After you identify those three, are there any you want to replace? Once you have decided on your final three values, ask when you've seen others exhibit each value. What was it about the way they behaved that showed me what this value looked like, and how am I going to live this out in my life, what will I say no to because I want to live this value? Every time you have a new shiny object pop up, ask if it is aligned with your values. Is it the thing I was prioritizing before, or the shiny object? If it is the thing you were prioritizing before, you need to say no to the shiny object so that you can say yes to the original priority. Identifying your values will help leverage your brain to guide your decisions Where your values, visions, and passions overlap is where your purpose lies. When you have confusion around your values, you let outside sources influence you and therefore there is confusion and you aren't able to create and develop genuine relationships, which are so important in the entrepreneurial space. To define your values, Google a list of values and do an exercise to narrow down your top 3 to 5. James Clear has a list on his website to refer to. List the top 15 that resonate with you. Then narrow the list down to 7 to 10 to eliminate overlap. From there, narrow the list down to the top 3 to 5 that really represent the values you want to live by. Once you have defined your values, make your decisions in your business, your life, and your relationships based on your values. Making predictions about the results your behaviors will produce Think of this model of yourself and the world. This model will help you predict the results your behaviors will produce or what your experiences will be. For example, I'm like this, therefore when I interact with the world in this way, I will feel like this and these are the results I'll get. Many times the model people create for themselves fails because they hadn't predicted the results properly. If you don't leverage your brain, you won't stick to the plan Most people make plans and think they will receive a specific outcome because they made the plan. However, quite often people don't stick to the plan or change the plan and therefore do not get the results originally intended. Or, when they do follow through with the plan they do not feel the way they thought they would feel or do not achieve the results they thought they would. When trying to predict your outcomes, ask yourself, how is it that I can do something that I don't want to do? If I want to do something, I write it down and yet don't do it. This makes no sense. The reason this happens is that people make an assumption that they are a unified personality in their heads. This model doesn't work because the truth is that we all have multiple personalities in our heads. There are different characters inside your mind who are guiding your decisions as a result of the different parts of the brain. You can leverage your brain because it is so powerful The cerebral cortex is the front part of your brain where a lot of your executive decisions are being made. In addition, it is referred to as your conscious self, that inner voice you hear. But there is much more to your brain. There is the hindbrain and the middle brain, it isn't just the rational brain that determines your decisions and behaviors. A lot of our behaviors are not rational so to address behaviors and try to change them by traditional means doesn't work. If you are doing things that you don't want to do in regards to survival-based behaviors such as eating, drinking, reproduction, and sleeping, you can't solve them by reading a book or the Bible. You need to respond with something that fulfills the function you want to stop. For example, you cannot replace watching YouTube videos with journaling or reading self-help books. You can't replace something that is not functionally the same and doesn't meet the same requirements. One thing that you can try to do, discovers why your brain wants to do that function. Chances are it is trying to escape from something by doing that behavior. Consider other ways you can escape without exerting yourself physically or being actively engaged. Find behaviors that check the boxes for escaping a behavior but is more healthy. For example, if you get sucked into social media when you feel the urge to scroll, stare at the wall instead of scrolling through social media. When you stare at the wall, it escapes from what you need to escape from, it takes very little effort and has a very positive effect as you get a dopamine reset. Staring and not thinking will allow your brain to drift into the diffused state, where no particular part of your brain is active, you are basically zoning out. You will spike curiosity and creativity by doing this. The key is to take action, leverage your brain, and rewrite your neuropathways Robyn shared how journaling works much better for her than meditation, but both work to redirect neuropathways in our brains. Writing also stimulates creativity. Self-experimentation Experiment with different activities to discover what works for you. For some, it may be meditation, for others journaling, for others starting at a wall. When something doesn't work, your first thought should be that is great feedback. What about my understanding caused me to make an incorrect prediction? If you do this every day, you will begin to make great progress. Reflect on why you get on social media, how does it make you feel? Is there anything else that makes you feel that way, but doesn't have the downside? Leverage your brain to learn the art of making predictions Most people don't make predictions. For example, you predict that doing push-ups will be a good alternative to getting on social media. Go do the push-ups and then ask yourself if that made you want to go back to work, ask if it made you feel great, or made you feel energized. If the answer to any of those is no, then your prediction was wrong. This is a great learning experience. Now you can discover why it was wrong for you. What did you feel instead, what other things make you feel that way? This is a great way to learn more about yourself. Robyn shared that in You, Me, and Anxiety, she included an exercise to identify what makes you feel certain ways. For example, if your stomach is hurting, what trigger caused the pain to begin? When did it start hurting, what were you doing when it started hurting, who were you with and is it anxiety over the situation that is causing the pain? You must be able to identify what you are feeling before you can identify what is making you feel that way. It may not be possible for people to change their level of conscientiousness. It is a fundamental personality trait that may not be able to be changed and even if it does shift your thoughts or feelings, they won't shift by much. Instead of assuming that you aren't an organized person and that any organized approach isn't going to work for you, think about your version of being organized. Many people won't journal, but they may do micro changes and predict the next 5 minutes.  The entire experience of doing push-ups only takes a few minutes and this may work well for a lot of people. Once you've done this several times, you recognize that this is what works for you and you now have a new and better behavior. The big takeaways for changing negative behaviors When we have repetitive bad habits that we want to change, we can make predictions, do experiments with new behaviors, and adjust based on what works and what doesn't work. There is no one size fits all approach and you have to discover what works for you through experimentation. If you aren't making predictions and evaluating how things make you feel, you won't ever identify what works for you. Always align with your values for the best results When you are aligned with your values, you are rooted in who you are meant to be, who you were called to be, versus trying to please someone else or adapting our behaviors based on what the world expects of us. If you are working to shift your mindset or get unstuck, these exercises are a great place to start. Saying yes too many times to things I don't really want to do builds up a lot of resentment. When someone taps into my desire to belong, take care of people and be of benefit to those around me, it's easy for me to say yes before I've even processed their request.I like my brain space to be mellow these days, and I like simple matter-of-fact decision-making. One of my clues that I haven't maintained a boundary is that I think about it all the time, and it clogs up my mind and creates tumultuous emotions.I have to own my own emotions and my involvement in becoming the person who is solving someone else's problems. To stop overcommitting, I have to first be honest about what I want to accomplish and do for myself. What do those goals require of me mentally, timewise, financially, socially, and physically? I can only stop overcommitting if I assign value to my own goals and KNOW what they take so that I know how much a new project might overwhelm or derail my plans and desires. And that makes it a lot easier to stand by and let others resolve their goals without me taking it over or managing it for them – because I am managing myself really well instead. When you want to please everyone, you don't even realize you have a limit of your own until you've gone so far past it that you are overwhelmed, tired, and resentful. We have to stop that! Being yourself and doing your stuff is enough. We don't need to get love by solving other people's problems.
