Welcome to the Monday Minute – your weekly reset to lead better, think clearer, and build your independent dealership with intention. Sponsored by Auto Analytix.Your best employees could probably make more money somewhere else. Most of them aren't leaving. And if you think that is about the paycheck, you are missing what is actually holding them – and what will eventually lose them if you are not paying attention to it.In this episode, Jeff and Luke get into culture – not the buzzword version written on a wall next to your mission statement, but the real version that gets built one conversation, one decision, and one hire at a time. Jeff makes the case that culture is not your slogan or the animal shelter you sponsor – it is what you actually tolerate, what you celebrate, and how you treat a customer who walks in furious about a blown engine while your whole team is watching to see what you do next. The owner or manager is always setting the tone whether they realize it or not. Luke shares the four core values that run his own dealership – Family, Optimism, Unwavering, Rectify – and why having an acronym your team can actually remember matters more than a framed poster nobody reads. The best cultures are not built in grand gestures. They are built in the small things: catching someone doing something right, a Friday lunch, a Monday morning huddle, a simple tradition that tells your team they are part of something worth showing up for.Your assignment this week: pick three to five core values that actually define your dealership – then live by them, not just frame them. Catch someone doing something right at least three to five times this week and recognize it out loud. Create one simple tradition your team will look forward to. Then ask three employees one question: in one word, how would you describe our culture? Write down what they say. If everyone says the same word, that is your culture. If everyone says something different, you have a problem worth solving – and now you know where to start.Review this week's Sunday newsletter at TheIndependentDealer.com for the full theme and exercises. Not subscribed yet? Why Your Best People Want You to Leave Them Alone There is a pattern Nathan Jamail has seen across hundreds of organizations, in every industry, at every level. Ask employees what their professional goal is, and most will eventually tell you: to be so good their boss leaves them alone. That is not apathy. That is a signal about how leadership is being experienced. In this episode, Nathan and Rocky go deep on why coaching cultures fail not because leaders lack intention, but because they spend their attention on exactly the wrong people. In This Episode: Why 90% of employees at every level aim to be left alone by their manager, and what that reveals about leadership The distinction between coaching those who need attention and those who deserve it Why the leader in the middle is the most powerful and most overlooked force in any organization How AI will eliminate the leader who manages through process and amplify the one who leads through genuine connection Why promoting the best salesperson into management is often the most costly mistake a company makes What "serve up, coach down" actually requires at every layer of an organization Why accountability and mandating behavior are acts of belief, not control Key Insights: Leaders default to spending time with struggling employees while leaving high performers alone. The consequence: high performers learn that good performance means less coaching, and they plateau. The goal is not buy-in. Buy-in is compliance. The goal is belief, and belief is built through alignment from the very top down. AI will not replace the leader. It will replace the manager who adds no human value. Connection, trust, and accountability cannot be automated. The leader in the middle (the director, the senior manager) holds more organizational power than anyone above or below them. They make or break alignment. Accountability is not control. It is the highest form of belief in another person's capacity. About Nathan Jamail: Nathan Jamail is a record-setting performer, CEO, Adjunct Professor in the MBA program at SMU's Cox School of Business, where he has earned more than 18 Teacher Excellence Awards, and a bestselling author of leadership and sales books. For more than two decades, Nathan has coached and developed leaders on three continents and thousands around the world. His leadership principles now serve as the backbone for organizations across manufacturing, finance, technology, communications, hospitality, and more. What if the smartest move you can make is to disrupt your own company before a competitor does?In this episode, Lindsay Smith sits down with John Durocher, the self-described accidental COO of Calix. John never set out to run operations. He came up through consulting and customer success, never managed a supply chain or an IT org, and that is exactly why his CEO wanted him in the seat. His mandate: question everything.John and Lindsay get into how to lead change when everyone is comfortable, build a leadership team that actually trusts each other, give feedback in the moment rather than at review season, and use AI to take drudgery off people rather than cut headcount. He also shares the directive that shaped his role: go build the company that would beat us.For any second-in-command driving transformation without breaking their people, this is a playbook. Most HR leaders think a resignation starts the day someone hands in their notice. It doesn't. It starts months earlier, the moment someone decides it's no longer worth speaking up. And almost nobody in HR is measuring it.This episode is sponsored by Deel.Hire, manage and pay, anyone, anywhere: https://www.deel.com/nickdayhr/In this episode of @thehrldpodcast, Nick Day, CEO at JGA Recruitment Group, breaks from his usual format for the first time in more than 200 episodes. There is no guest this time, just Nick, a microphone, and one idea he cannot stop thinking about. After 24 years of exit interviews and placing over 10,000 professionals across 40+ countries, he has built his own coaching framework around fear. This episode is where he unpacks it in full.Nick introduces the idea of the fear tax, the invisible cost every organisation pays when people stop raising problems, ideas, and concerns out loud, and breaks down why silence looks like a wellbeing problem but spends like a balance sheet one. He contrasts a manager who unknowingly built a culture of fear with a leader whose team openly flagged a critical mistake before it went public, walks through his own fear equation of anxiety plus uncertainty multiplied by imagination, and explains why fear in capable people rarely looks like fear at all, instead disguising itself as caution, busy bravery, perfectionism, or imposter syndrome. He also shares the BOLD protocol, a four step method for catching fear in the three second window before it wins, backed by research from Stanford and UCLA, and gets personal about a lesson he learned the hard way with his own father. In a world where HR is expected to protect culture, retain top talent, and prove ROI on every initiative, this episode makes the case that the biggest lever HR has never measured is right in front of them. It is whether people feel safe enough to speak.A must-listen for HR leaders, people managers, and anyone who has ever sat in a meeting, known exactly the right thing to say, and said nothing.Enjoyed this? Your highest performer has not pushed back in months. The meetings feel smoother. Decisions move faster. Everyone seems to be on the same page. Before you call that alignment, look again. Your best people did not suddenly run out of opinions. They may have learned that speaking honestly costs more than staying quiet. Maybe the punishment was obvious. More often, it was smaller: the tightened jaw, the defensive answer, the quick dismissal, the meeting invitation that stopped coming. No one had to announce that candor was unwelcome. Your behavior did the talking. In Episode 140 of Leadership Sandbox™, Tammy J. Bond exposes the quiet leadership behaviors that manufacture employee silence. She breaks down the three patterns leaders miss, the question that invites real truth, and the three-second pause that can begin rebuilding trust. You will hear why smooth meetings are not always healthy meetings, why respectful friction matters, and why demanding honesty will never repair a system that keeps punishing it. Leadership Sandbox™ is for leaders who refuse to settle for surface-level leadership. If you are ready to make leadership behavior visible, measurable, coachable, and repeatable, explore the COMMAND™ Leadership Behavior Operating System at www.bondgroupenterprises.com/command-leadership.
