The Voice of Insurance

I often wonder if we in the insurance industry have any idea how lucky we are that there are so many smart people out there looking to help make the way we do business easier, more efficient, more productive and ultimately, more profitable. Today's guest, Matt Hicks, is one of these people. Matt is the co-founder of Recorder, a next-generation broker management system that connects producers directly with underwriters and gives those underwriters instant quote and bind capabilities. Matt is a serial entrepreneur who has already been involved in two successful fintech ventures and now has some very well-known insurance investors on board this one. The product Matt and his team have produced is laser-focused on what adds the most value in the commercial insurance value chain. It's all about reducing admin and freeing producers, whether they are brokers, coverholders or frontline underwriters, up to do what they do best. The initial productivity gains claimed are eye-opening. The term serial entrepreneur may give you a misleading impression, so I'd say the best way of describing Matt would be that he would always be the most investable guest on an episode of Dragon's Den or Shark Tank. By the time he had finished with them, he would have all the investors fighting to be involved. The key I think is that special humility and empathy you get with really successful entrepreneurs. In my time as an insurance journalist I have lost count of the number of entrepreneurs I have met with who have undoubtedly superb technology, but who ultimately failed because they had zero empathy or understanding of how insurance professionals actually work and therefore what help they really need. Matt and his team are in insurance for the long run and know that the sort of API-lead revolution they are proposing will take time. But at the same time they know that history is on their side if they are patient enough. So I can highly recommend a listen. Matt is incredibly easy to talk to and his experienced and down-to-earth approach means he knows exactly how to go about making Recorder the sort of tool that over time the best producers are going to be clamouring for.   LINKS:  https://www.recorder.tech/ https://www.recorder.tech/contact

Imagine losing a team member who's been with you for years. Beyond the obvious recruiting costs, you're facing a cascade of hidden consequences: the training burden on your remaining team, eroding morale as staff wonder if they should be looking elsewhere, and patients noticing unfamiliar faces at every visit. That's the reality of turnover, and it's far more costly than most dentists realize.Drawing from my own practice experience—nine years of remarkable stability followed by a challenging period of departures after COVID—I've discovered that reducing turnover doesn't require complex systems or extravagant perks. It comes down to three fundamental principles that are surprisingly easy to implement but transformative in their impact.Recognition sits at the heart of retention. When I committed to giving each team member two specific compliments weekly (what I call "filling buckets"), I was shocked to discover how many quiet contributors I'd been overlooking. Creating systematic appreciation—sharing patient reviews, implementing token recognition programs, celebrating achievements—transforms recognition from an occasional afterthought to a cultural cornerstone.Regular one-on-ones provide the psychological safety team members need to express concerns before they become resignation letters. These structured conversations aren't just problem-solving sessions; they're relationship-building opportunities that demonstrate you value each person's perspective. I've consistently found that periods of team unrest coincided with lapses in these critical meetings. Finally, investing in your team's growth and creating a workplace where people genuinely enjoy their colleagues builds remarkable loyalty. People will tolerate significant workplace challenges when they love the people they work with and feel they're continuously developing professionally.Ready to transform your practice into one where people want to stay? Visit dentalpracticeheroes.com to schedule a strategy call. We'll discuss your specific challenges and explore how our coaching program can help you build the team-driven practice that gives you more freedom, profitability, and peace of mind.Take Control of Your Practice and Your Life We help dentists take more time off while making more money through systematization, team empowerment, and creating leadership teams. Employee recognition might sound obvious, but why do so many leaders miss it in practice? Dr. Bob Nelson joins Sarah Lockwood to explains why low-cost recognition ideas often matter more than paychecks or perks when it comes to real employee motivation.    How do you create loyalty from day one with a new hire? What's the difference between a generic end-of-year award and genuine recognition that lands in the moment? And how can asking employees for their ideas spark both engagement and business growth?   Dr. Nelson brings decades of research and real-world examples to these questions, offering workplace culture tips that work whether you're leading a small team or a global workforce. He shows that recognition doesn't have to be expensive, but it does have to feel thoughtful and consistent if you want it to change company culture.   This episode reminds us that company culture is built in the small choices leaders make each day to notice, acknowledge, and value the people doing the work.   Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Why Employee Recognition Matters   01:52 Common Misconceptions About Recognition   04:07 Onboarding Tips That Build Loyalty   05:52 How Employees Want to Be Recognized   07:45 Low-Cost Recognition Ideas That Work   09:07 Involving Employees in Decision-Making   10:02 Real Examples of Employee Ideas Driving Growth   14:06 The Role of Leadership in Company Culture   16:10 Recognition for Remote and Global Teams   21:28 Continuous Development and Retention     Connect with Dr. Bob Nelson: Visit Dr. Bob Nelson's Website   Connect with Sarah Lockwood: Visit HiveCast Connect with Sarah on LinkedIn   Connect with The Conscious Entrepreneur: The Conscious Entrepreneur  Follow The Conscious Entrepreneur on LinkedIn Follow The Conscious Entrepreneur on Instagram  Subscribe to The Conscious Entrepreneur on YouTube   HiveCast.fm is a proud sponsor of The Conscious Entrepreneur Podcast. The ripple effect of bad onboarding on morale, productivity, and your calendar. The 5 questions every new hire needs answered to succeed from day one. How to build onboarding systems that run without you. How AI can personalize, automate, and track onboarding so you don't have to babysit it. Hey Friend! Are you watching good people disengage or leave your team? Seeing departments operate like separate islands instead of one cohesive unit? The problem isn't your strategy or your people—it's that you're leading through your own lens instead of seeing things through theirs. After two decades of guiding executives through team dynamics, I can tell you the leaders who master this aren't the ones with the most experience. They're the ones who understand that every person on their team has a different operating system. And once you learn to see through their lens, everything changes.

As President Trump considers striking Iran, Kara talks to Nicolle Wallace — host of MSNBC'S Deadline: White House and the new podcast The Best People.  They unpack President Trump's mixed messaging on Iran and his growing credibility gap with the American public, the political calculus behind his domestic shows of force, and the disturbing rise of political violence in America. Plus, a look back at the 2008 presidential campaign and a candid conversation about how journalists can remain relevant in a rapidly shifting media landscape.  Please note: This conversation was recorded on the morning of Tuesday, June 17th, before Senator Mike Lee deleted his heinous posts on X about the assassinations in Minnesota, and before President Trump demanded Iran's “unconditional surrender” on Truth Social. Federal agents tackle and handcuff Senator Alex Padilla after he shouts a question at Kristi Noem at a public press conference. Trump continues to politicize the military, attacking his political enemies in a speech to troops at Fort Bragg and preparing for his North Korea-style birthday party. New polling shows that Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" is wildly unpopular—and increasingly vulnerable to Democratic attacks. Favreau and Nicolle Wallace, host of MSNBC's Deadline: White House and the new podcast series The Best People, discuss the latest from occupied LA, check in on the short-lived Trump-Elon feud, and try not to panic over RFK Jr.'s recent firings at the CDC. Then Lovett sits down with Zohran Mamdani to discuss his surging campaign for mayor of New York City. For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here.
