A few weeks ago, I re-released one of my old Stepping Up to the Plate episodes as a tribute to Ali Kreiger and her recent retirement from professional soccer. In this week's episode, I will again reach into the archives of the old Stepping Up to the Plate podcast series and re-release two episodes that I did with a dear friend and mentor, Russ Herbein. Russ lost his battle with cancer on Thanksgiving Day. He and I were the co-founders of the Spring-Lawn Optimist Baseball League, which served as the spring board to the formation of the Berkshire Baseball & Softball Club. These episodes were originally recorded in January of 2014, just before Berkshire Baseball & Softball Club rebranded into the BIG Vision Foundation.  The episodes were hosted by my old producer, Toni Reece.  We talk about how some conversations at work led to an organization that at that time had made an amazing impact on its community for over 25 years. I wanted to re-release these episodes in order to emphasize Russ's legacy and selfishly as a way for me and others who loved him, to hear his voice again. Russ was the type of person who always saw potential in people that they didn't see in themselves. For me personally, he convinced me to speak publicly for the first time and encouraged me to enter into leadership positions as a very young man.  Something that I really didn't think that I was qualified for, yet he believed in me and encouraged me to take the leap.  Before I was 25 years old, I served as both a club president and Lieutenant Governor within Optimist International.  I never would have entered into those roles if it wasn't for Russ believing in me and seeing potential that I didn't know existed within myself. I hope my listeners enjoy this episode and get an understanding of the amazing human that Russ was. To Russ, Rest in Peace, my friend, we'll see you on the other side.

Powerful short book with information that is still valuable nearly 100 years after it was first written. (108 pages) Bio: Christian D. Larson (1874 – 1962) was an American New Thought leader and teacher, as well as a prolific author of metaphysical and New Thought books. He is credited by Horatio Dresser as being a founder in the New Thought movement. Many of Larson's books remain in print today, nearly 100 years after they were first published, and his writings influenced notable New Thought authors and leaders, including Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes.  In 1912 Larson developed the Optimist Creed, which in 1922 was adopted by Optimist International, better known as the Optimist Clubs. Excerpts:  ...The art of concentration is one of the simplest to learn, and one of the greatest when mastered; and these pages are written especially for those who wish to learn how to master this fine art in all of its aspects; who wish to develop the power to concentrate well at any time and for any purpose; who wish to make real concentration a permanent acquisition of the mind. ...Whatever your work or your purpose may be, a good concentration is indispensable. It is necessary to apply, upon the object or subject at hand, the full power of thought and talent if you are to secure, with a certainty, the results you desire, or win the one thing you have in view. But the art of concentration is not only a leading factor in the fields of achievement and realization; it is also a leading factor in another field — a field of untold possibility. ...The exceptional value of concentration is recognized universally; and still there are comparatively few that really know how to concentrate. Some of these have a natural aptitude for concentrated thought and action, while others have improved themselves remarkably in this direction, due to increased knowledge on the subject; but as yet the psychology of concentration is not understood generally; and that is why the majority have not developed this great art, although they are deeply desirous of doing so. ...When we do not know how to proceed, we either hesitate or proceed in a bungling fashion; or, we may proceed under the guidance of a number of misleading beliefs. We will explore the history of Optimist International with Past President Dave Bruns, Author of "Bringing out the Best - The First Century of Optimist International." from it's beginning in Buffalo New York to it's growth as one of the largest service organizations in the world.

For Jaylon Muchison, speech has paid off in a big way. The recent Belleville West High School graduate recently netted $22,500 from Optimist International’s 2020 Oratorical World Championship — winning his regional and state rounds before claiming the international title. That money will make a huge difference as the 18-year-old heads to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this fall. He plans to pursue a double major in acting and communications.

Just Be Glad, by noted author Christian D. Larson (1874 - 1962) offers guidance in the law of attraction and manifestation in achieving personal goals, success, and happiness. It also offers guidance for your spiritual journey. Christian D. Larson is recognized by many as being one of the key founders of the New Thought movement; as a leader, teacher, and prolific author in New Thought as well as metaphysical books. Christian D. Larson was born in Iowa, in 1874. He attended Iowa State College, and also attended a Unitarian Theological school in Meadville, Pa. In his early twenties, Larson became interested in the Mental Science teachings of Helen Wilmans, Henry Wood, Charles Brodie Patterson, and other prolific New Thought writers of the time. Christian had an analytical mind and his own new thought writings made had a big influence on the movement. Larson believed that all people have a tremendous latent power within them, which could be harnessed for success with the right mind and proper attitude. He attempted to find a place where science and theology could meet in order to provide a practical and systematic philosophy of life. In 1901, Larson organized the New Thought Temple at his residence. In September of that same year, Christian Larson began to publish books for one of the leading New Thought periodicals of the time. This was around the time he bagan his writing career, going on to write over 40 books in the New Thought and metaphysical genre. Christian D. Larson also had aconsiderable influence on the work and philosophy of Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science (also known as Science of Mind), early in his career. Holmes had been studying the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, but was particularly impressed with the New Thought writings of Larson. According to Fenwicke Holmes, Ernest abandoned the Christian Science textbook in favor of Larson's books. Ernest and Fenwicke Holmes later took a correspondence course with Christian D. Larson. In Ernest Holme's biography, Fenwilk Holmes elaborates on the influence that Larson had on his brother Ernest. Larson influenced Holmes to a nw philsophy that inspired him to go forward with learning and practicing the art of mental treatment, also encouraging him to go beyond physical healing to the 'control of external conditions'. When Ernest Holmes' 2-year old magazine changed its name to Science of Mind in 1920, Christian D. Larson became the associate editor and a frequent contributer. Christian D. Larson is also credited by Horatio Dresser as being one of the influential founders in the shaping of the early New Thought movement. As early as 1928, Christian D. Larson began appearing in the Science of Mind magazine as part of the major teaching courses. Christian Larson was also on the permenent staff of the Institute of Religious Science in Los Angeles, of which Ernest Holmes was the founder. Christian D. Larson was also a one time honorary President of the International New Thought Alliance. In 1912 Larson developed the "The Optimist's Creed" , which in 1922, was adopted by Optimist International, better known as the Optimist Clubs. Christian D. Larson was an important leader in the New Thought movement. His early influence on Ernest Holmes, Norman Vincent Peale, and numerous other self-help and inspirational writers influenced much of the New Thought movement as a whole. Christian Daa Larson was an American New Thought leader and teacher, as well as a prolific author of metaphysical and New Thought books. His writings influenced notable New Thought authors and leaders, including Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes.Christian D. Larson was born in Iowa, in 1874. He attended Iowa State College, and also attended a Unitarian Theological school in Meadville, Pa. In his early twenties, Larson became interested in the Mental Science teachings of Helen Wilmans, Henry Wood, Charles Brodie Patterson, and other prolific New Thought writers of the time. Christian had an analytical mind and his own new thought writings made had a big influence on the movement. Larson believed that all people have a tremendous latent power within them, which could be harnessed for success with the right mind and proper attitude. He attempted to find a place where science and theology could meet in order to provide a practical and systematic philosophy of life.In 1901, Larson organized the New Thought Temple at his residence. In September of that same year, Christian Larson began to publish books for one of the leading New Thought periodicals of the time. This was around the time he bagan his writing career, going on to write over 40 books in the New Thought and metaphysical genre. Christian D. Larson also had aconsiderable influence on the work and philosophy of Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science (also known as Science of Mind), early in his career. Holmes had been studying the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, but was particularly impressed with the New Thought writings of Larson. According to Fenwicke Holmes, Ernest abandoned the Christian Science textbook in favor of Larson's books. Ernest and Fenwicke Holmes later took a correspondence course with Christian D. Larson. In Ernest Holme's biography, Fenwilk Holmes elaborates on the influence that Larson had on his brother Ernest. Larson influenced Holmes to a nw philsophy that inspired him to go forward with learning and practicing the art of mental treatment, also encouraging him to go beyond physical healing to the 'control of external conditions'.When Ernest Holmes' 2-year old magazine changed its name to Science of Mind in 1920, Christian D. Larson became the associate editor and a frequent contributer. Christian D. Larson is also credited by Horatio Dresser as being one of the influential founders in the shaping of the early New Thought movement. As early as 1928, Christian D. Larson began appearing in the Science of Mind magazine as part of the major teaching courses. Christian Larson was also on the permenent staff of the Institute of Religious Science in Los Angeles, of which Ernest Holmes was the founder. Christian D. Larson was also a one time honorary President of the International New Thought Alliance. In 1912 Larson developed the "The Optimist's Creed" , which in 1922, was adopted by Optimist International, better known as the Optimist Clubs. Christian D. Larson was an important leader in the New Thought movement. His early influence on Ernest Holmes, Norman Vincent Peale, and numerous other self-help and inspirational writers influenced much of the New Thought movement as a whole. There are many wonderful chapters but in this we focus on imagination. Imagination has been a popular subject on the podcast primarily through Dr. Joseph Murphy and Neville Goddard.
