Ten Foot Pole was founded in 1983 under the name Scared Straight. After going through several members and name changes, they began playing with some "Nardcore" bands from nearby Oxnard, California, which helped them gain recognition. They eventually changed their name to Ten Foot Pole. One of the reasons for the name change was to move away from the "straight-edge" reputation that followed the band with a name like Scared Straight. After the release of Rev and a split EP with Sweden's Satanic Surfers, Singer Scott was forced to leave the band due to his professional baseball commitments and Ten Foot Pole's desire to be a full-time touring band. From then on Dennis took over lead vocals for the band and has been the front man ever since. They've released 7 albums since Rev including their latest album Winning which came out in 2022. You can catch them out on the road becasue they're still touring. I reached out to the band, got Dennis on the Skype and this is what we chat about: Harvesting the Crust Brian Walsby The Tour with NOFX Mystic Records Coming up with the name Departing with Scott Radinsky Doing sound for Prince, Beck and others Victory Records The Rev cover How to release songs on Spotify Playing for a wedding And a ton more Go follow them on Instagram and check out their website tenfootpole.com for merch and news. Those kids will never live up to society's expectations- they're just a bunch of Rich Kids on LSD! On this episode we talk to Christopher Rest, the guitarist for RKL and Lagwagon. Christopher dives headfirst into how he got into playing music, the formation of RKL, and their crazy adventures during the 1980s. He explains the evolution of RKL's various lineup changes and covers how the recordings with Mystic Records and Epitaph came about. Christopher also talks about the band's low points during the 1980s and how things changed for the better after they returned from their second European tour, ultimately leading to their first breakup. The 1990s were a rollercoaster ride for him given the reformation of RKL and how different versions of the group garnered mix reviews. Finally, he covers how he was asked to join Lagwagon and where things are today post pandemic. This week's episode is Early Days, part 5, focusing on the eventful last quarter of 2012. Night Demon appear on their first magazine cover, in a concept gone dreadfully awry, then perform for themselves at a deserted Halloween party, learning valuable business lessons along the way. Work continues on the design of a Night Demon mascot, artwork and logo. In November 2012, Night Demon plays more shows, with drummer John Crerar in a neck brace and a stack of digital download cards to hand out to fans. In the meantime, Armand and Dusty's band New Liberty was setting Ventura on fire, living the rock'n'roll dream, and recording new material. There were cracks in the foundation, however, as Dustin became disillusioned with the direction of the band and his interest waned. To close out 2012, New Liberty recorded a revved-up version of Spinal Tap's "Christmas with the Devil" for a Nardcore Christmas album. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. Nardcore's finest Stu and Vince of OMEGA POINT hit the KZAA phone line for a live radio interview on November 12th, 2020. We talked epic hardcore show lineups, NARDCORE, Nard Times Zine and much more.
This inaugural episode tells the history of a gone but not forgotten punk band from La Puente. T.U. aka The Uglies, circa 2005-2011. The band’s bassist and lead singer, Noe Silva, is a friend of the program, and an understated fixture in the Southern California scene. His adventurous (and at times pretentious) musical tendencies resulted in a song which in part inspired this program’s creation. There are two main punk sounds associated with the San Gabriel Valley. Backyard street punk, and more and more, the Gun Club. Fifteen years ago though, it was mainly just street punk. Everyone had a Misfits shirt. And Noe Silva was no exception. But Silva was influenced by an older generation who came up on 1980's SoCal punk like Bad Religion, Nardcore, X, The Adolescents, and 45 Grave. This was the music in the background while he skated around South San Jose Hills and threw eggs down from the trailer park on Azusa and Temple. His brother Johnny always had instruments in the house, but it had never occurred to Silva to do anything other than bang on them until a classmate told him he needed a bassist to jam with. Silva was bowled over when his friend played Bro Hymn on guitar and claimed it as his own song. He needed to do that too. Entering Nogales High, Silva began to build up his confidence on the bass - more so than the rest of his jamming partners. Backyard gigs were booked and abandoned. Opportunities were missed. Frustrated, he took to the refuge of marijuana between classes. His schoolmasters, duly disappointed, remanded him to Valley Alternative School. The young man found himself under house arrest his sophomore year. While moping around the backyard one afternoon, he noticed a familiar face next door. He thought he saw his old school friend, Eric Miller, but it was actually his younger brother, Dylan Miller. Silva seized on this lifeline to the outside world and forced a stack of cd’s on Dylan to take home. After his punishment was lifted, Silva and the Millers formed The Uglies. Gigs were played. Gun Club and Minutemen cd’s were burned. Young ladies may have been said “what up” to. The band went through numerous member changes and explored the blues, post punk, classic rock, and hardcore. Their style was somewhat at home with the rest of the local scene, but more often than not their sets were twice as long as anyone else's. Silva had some dreams of stardom as T.U. continued to advance their sound. The band wouldn't last forever; he wanted to mix more with artier heads in the LA and OC scenes (Boss Beats' guitarist and future Meru bandmate Zubin Peer once said Silva had been "constipated" in T.U, trying to write perfect songs). But in the band's final line-up, they made something unlike anything they had allowed themselves to do before, yet still undeniably rooted in their identity. Untitled IV - The Song of the San Gabriel Valley.

On this special ep we dial into the often not mentioned dark years of the Nard: 1987-1992. We bring in the legend, Joe Rivas', older brother Davi Rivas to talk about his early bands, and this period. Then we dive into his successful run in the 90's, playing big European shows and even putting out a single on Marlboro Records. Forrest Lorenzana is on next to talk his early bands, that dark era, Clenched Fist, what it was like to play Ill Repute. Forrest drops a story he thought was too sensitive for the normal folk, so we shoved it onto Patreon for the true 185'ers. A fun listen and I learned a shit ton from this one. A live recording of our educational podcast The How, The Why with Kathy Rodgers, Kirsten (Bruce) Meekins, Laura Beth Bachman, and Stacy Russo. This panel will share their stories behind the book We Were Going to Change the World: Interviews with Women from the 1970s and 1980s Southern California Punk Rock Scene. Kathy Rodgers lives in Ventura. She was born and raised in Oxnard, California, which is the home of Nardcore and the Hernandez Brothers comic book fame Love and Rockets. She became a photographer at the age of 13 and almost solely shot punk bands, specifically local Nardcore bands. She graduated Otis/Parsons School of Design with a degree in photography. She also published, edited, shot, and wrote for her magazine Mute on the Floor which existed from 1990-1993. Kirsten (Bruce) Meekins grew up in Redlands, California, and now splits her time between there and the Reno/Tahoe area of Northern Nevada. She is a Registered Natural Health Practitioner and has just launched a new nutrition coaching practice. She still attends as many live music shows as she can and credits the DIY scene in the 80s with her entrepreneurial spirit. Laura Beth Bachman lives in Downtown Long Beach with her partner, Matt Irwin. She is the drummer for the all girl surf/punk band The Neptunas. Laura is a truth seeker and beat keeper who believes it takes grit to be a woman in this world. Stacy Russo, a librarian and professor at Santa Ana College, is a writer, poet, and artist. Her book We Were Going to Change the World: Interviews with Women from the 1970s/1980s Southern California Punk Rock Scene (Santa Monica Press) features interviews with 37 women who were involved in the scene in diverse ways, including as musicians, photographers, journalists, fanzine creators, and fans. Her other books are Love Activism (forthcoming spring 2018, Litwin Books);Life as Activism: June Jordan’s Writings from The Progressive (Litwin Books); and The Library as Place in California (McFarland). She grew up in the 1980s Southern California punk rock scene, which has been a big influence on her life. Stacy takes her coffee black and eats chocolate every morning. We Were Going to Change the World: Interviews with Women from the 1970s and 1980s Southern California Punk Rock Scene documents the punk rock scene of the 1970s and ’80s in Southern California, which is widely acknowledged as one of the most vibrant, creative periods in all of rock and roll history. And while many books have covered the artists who contributed to the music of that era, none have exclusively focused on the vitality and influence of the women who played such a crucial role in this incredibly dynamic and instrumental movement. We Were Going to Change the World captures the stories of women who were active in the SoCal punk rock scene during this historic time, adding an important voice to its cultural and musical record. Through exclusive interviews with musicians, journalists, photographers, and fans, Stacy Russo has captured the essence of why these women were drawn to punk rock, what they witnessed, and how their involvement in this empowering scene ended up influencing the rest of their lives. 1888 Center programs are recorded and archived as a free educational resource on our website or with your favorite podcast app including Apple and Spotify.
