One year ago, the first batch of new hymns was released for a new hymnbook of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Hymns — For Home and Church” is for members to use as part of their worship and gospel study. As more new hymns are released, they can be found on the Church’s website at music.ChurchofJesusChrist.org and the Gospel Library app. On this Church News podcast episode, Church News reporter Mary Richards is joined by the Church’s Hymnbook Committee chair, music author and composer Steve Schank, to discuss an update on the size, scope and timing of the new hymnbook. They explore the sacred power of music in worship, the careful selection of new music in this ongoing project and the joyful singing of hymns. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Hosts Jon Ryan Jensen, editor of the Church News, and Church News reporter Mary Richards share unique views of the stories, events, and people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.
No new recording of the Doctrine and Covenants this year. Enjoy a replay of the Book of Mormon in this feed while you catch the D&C in your Gospel Library app.
James Perry is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Area History Manager for Northern Europe, he was a historian and editor on previous volumes of 'Saints' - a narrative history of the Church. He was the general editor of the fourth and final volume of 'Saints.'I wanted to speak to James about his experience joining the Church as a young adult and becoming enamoured with the Church's history. I also wanted to discuss the fourth volume of Saints because it covers from 1955-2020 - so it seems less of a history and more of a deeper dive into the lives of members who are still living and leaders who we can get to know better. Some highlights from this episode include James's favourite stories from the fourth volume of 'Saints', what James would say to those who can't see the beauty and richness of Church history, and why everyone should read the new volume of 'Saints.'--The fourth volume of 'Saints: Sounded In Every Ear' will be released on October 29th. This episode is dedicated to the loving memory of JeNeal Nichol Miller, who passed away on Pioneer Day this year. She inspired everyone she knew to be nonjudgmental and Christlike. She was a true ally and is deeply missed. **This episode talks about suicide. If you are suicidal, please call/text/chat 988** My friend Tonya Baker Miller (married mother of four, active LDS, Founder/Clinical Director of Cottonwood Counseling and Coaching) joins us to talk about supporting transgender/non-binary Latter-day Saints. Tonya has more than ten years of experience as a therapist working with transgender individuals, and also has transgender friends and family members about whom she cares deeply. Tonya talks about gospel principles, provides clinical perspectives, and offers ideas to help us better understand and support our transgender friends. Tonya addresses questions such as: “Is this a phase?”, “Is being transgender a disorder?”, “Is there a ‘cause,' or do some people just ‘come with this?'”, and “What is intersectionality? And why are there so many transgender people also on the autism spectrum?” Tonya also talks about how complex transgenderism is. For example, the medical/clinical angle tends to utilize the disease model to characterize many challenges that transgender individuals encounter. Socially, there is so much judgment (political, religious, etc.) around transgenderism that we risk getting lost in abstraction and losing focus on ways we can show love and help each individual meet their day-to-day needs. She describes ways that we can support our transgender friends as they navigate this incredibly nuanced and misunderstood space. I am so grateful for Tonya and her work to support transgender Latter-day Saints and their families. I learn so much from her and grateful to have her on the podcast. I hope that you listen to this episode and gain more understanding/vocabulary/tools to better love/support our transgender/non-binary friends. On a personal note, I am grateful for Tonya for being a guest host of this podcast and writing a chapter in my third book about healing from Church-generated trauma (see show notes). This episode is the first of the new year. We're reading from the 1920 edition of the Book of Mormon which is no longer under copyright protection in the United States. In this reading, we cover the modern material that Joseph Smith had published with the Book of Mormon. That includes the testimony of three witnesses, the testimony of eight witnesses, and an excerpt from Joseph's own history. This is read for you by Bradley Ross, but edits have been made using an AI voice changer, elevenlabs.io, to help differentiate each speaker in the text. Bradley's own voice is used when Nephi is speaking. Welcome back to the General Conference podcast. Today we have a few updates to share with you about the future of this podcast. First, we wanted to let you know that we'll continue to make it easy for you to listen to general conference talks spread out between April and October. But we've come up with a more personalized way for you to do this, and that's with a more versatile function on the Gospel Library app, which I'll tell you how to set up at the end of this episode. With this customization, you can set your own pace for how frequently you listen to talks, rather than getting them on just Tuesdays and Fridays. And you can still receive notifications on your phone to make it simple to listen. So, what does that update mean for this podcast? For now, we're going to pause our regular publication of conference talks here. But you'll want to keep following this account because we'll bring you updates on this podcast and other podcasts from the Church in the future. We'd also love to hear your ideas about the ideal way you'd like to study general conference in the podcast space. You can send us your thoughts and preferences through email at podcast@ChurchofJesusChrist.org; please put “General Conference Podcast” in the subject line. Your voice matters so much to us, and we truly appreciate everyone who takes time to share your thoughts. And thank you for being part of our podcast community. We love being united with so many others in listening to and learning from prophets, apostles, and other Church leaders. We're sincerely grateful for you! And now, as promised, we want to share with you how to use the customizable feature on the Gospel Library app where you can establish your own pace for listening to general conference talks. There's actually a video tutorial that walks you through this process, which we'll link in the show notes if that's easier for you. But here's also how you can do it: https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/new-notification-options-on-gospel-library-app#:~:text=Accessing%20Notifications%20Settings,which%20notifications%20to%20toggle%20on. First you'll open your Gospel Library app and then open the Settings menu. Then click on Notifications. Under Study Plans, find the Plus symbol or the Create Study Plan button, depending on your phone. Next, browse the library and select General Conference and the April or October general conference you want to listen to. You can then choose to set a schedule where you select which days of the week you want a conference talk sent to you and for how long. Then mark that you want a reminder and what time you want it sent. And that's it! Now your customizable study schedule will be adapted to the days and times that are best for you each week! Of course, you can also get a physical copy of the general conference issues of the Liahona magazine to help you in your study at store.ChurchofJesusChrist.org. Thank you again for listening to the General Conference podcast! We look forward to being in touch again in the future!

My guest today is Laurel Ulrich, (I corrected her first name. In the previous note, it was Laura) a retired professor from Harvard University. Despite societal expectations that women should focus solely on homemaking, Laura pursued her education and received a Ph.D. while raising five children. She has authored several books, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Midwife's Tale, and is known for her catchphrase “well-behaved women seldom make history.” In her latest book, A House Full of Females, Laura explores the surprising connection between plural marriage and women's suffrage in 1870. She is truly a delightful person, and I am sure you will agree after listening to this episode. Please give this podcast a thumbs up and tap the subscribe button. They also talk about a nurse's claim that most US Mormons are failing to follow the Word of Wisdom. Next, they discuss an episode of the podcast where Elder David A. Bednar talks about Latter-day Saint temples and the power of covenants and ordinances. They also talk about a researcher's claim that there is a seismic political shift happening among young Latter-day Saints. Alma 32: 21 "And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true." I was listening to a Q & A recently from Elder Bednar (https://open.spotify.com/episode/1qpA7uJ4t2fLzJwVDYJ9Rd). I had a thought about something he said, Korihor the anti-Christ wanted a sign. He didn't show FAITH it was all about SEEING. How often do I do that? We want to have proof and know with our eyes if something is true. Join me today as I share 6 principles from the Gospel Library about faith. 1. Faith in Jesus Christ can motivate us to follow His perfect example 2. Our faith can lead us to do good works, obey the commandments, and repent of our sins 3. Our faith can help us overcome temptation 4. The Lord will work mighty miracles in our life according to our faith 5. Faith in Jesus Christ helps us receive spiritual and physical healing through His Atonement 6. When times of trial come, faith can give us strength to press forward and face our hardships with courage. Even when the future seems uncertain, our faith in the Savior can give us peace www.bethnewellcoaching.com bethnewellcoaching@gmail.com

Episode 22Prostitute Doctrinal Drift The Jericho PrincipleLesson 22 “Be Strong and of a Good Courage”#OldTestament2022 #comefollowme #comefollowme2022 #realtalkcomefollowmeJoin hosts Ganel-Lyn Condie and John Fossum as they discuss impactful topics from this week's Come, Follow Me lesson covering Joshua 1-8 and 23-24. Explore these important themes, topics and questions: What is “doctrinal drift” and how do we avoid it to maintain our focus on what matters most? Who is Rahab and what can we learn from her? Why were the Israelites commanded to collect twelve stones from the river? What was the symbolism of that? What is “The Jericho Principle?"—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Invitation: Rejoice in the knowledge that you have already been saved.—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Quotes & Links: Link to Come, Follow Me Through the Old Testament Book:https://www.seagullbook.com/come-follow-me-through-the-old-testament.html Gospel Library Quote about Joshua: “This book is named after Joshua because he was the principal figure in it and not because he was the author.Old Testament prophet and leader, and the successor of Moses. He was born in Egypt before the children of Israel escaped (Num. 14:26–31). He and Caleb were among the twelve spies sent to Canaan. They alone gave a good report of the land (Num. 13:8, 16–33; 14:1–10). He died at the age of 110 (Josh. 24:29). Joshua was a great example of a devout prophet-warrior.” (Gospel Library, Guide to the Scriptures, “Joshua”)President Uchtdorf Quote: “We are, therefore, not ignorant of the challenges of the world, nor are we unaware of the difficulties of our times. But this does not mean that we should burden ourselves or others with constant fear. Rather than dwelling on the immensity of our challenges, would it not be better to focus on the infinite greatness, goodness, and absolute power of our God, trusting Him and preparing with a joyful heart for the return of Jesus the Christ? As His covenant people, we need not be paralyzed by fear because bad things might happen. Instead, we can move forward with faith, courage, determination, and trust in God as we approach the challenges and opportunities ahead” [2017–A:104, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Perfect Love Casteth Out Fear]Sister Michelle Craig Quote: “Jesus Christ sees people deeply. He sees individuals, their needs, and who they can become. Where others saw fishermen, sinners, or publicans, Jesus saw disciples; where others saw a man possessed by devils, Jesus looked past the outward distress, acknowledged the man, and healed him.” (2020–O:15, Michelle D. Craig, Eyes to See)Elder Marlin K. Jensen Quote: “Remembering enables us to see God's hand in our past, just as prophecy and faith assure us of God's hand in our future” (“Remember and Perish Not,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2007, 38).
The third volume of Saints: The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days, was published this week by the Church. The Saints project has gained widespread popularity because of its accessibility—it's written in a narrative format—as well as its assiduous adherence to documented history. It is an enormous endeavor led by a very able group of scholars. We invited one of the leaders of this project, Dr. Lisa Olsen Tait, to come on our podcast to tell us what's in this volume and how it came together. It was a very engaging conversation. We know that some Latter-day Saints have had a complicated relationship with Church history. It can be alternately incredibly inspiring, confusing, uplifting and at times disturbing. And as Lisa put it, “There's a history to the Church's relationship with its history.” For those who have longed for an official history that is more open and accurate than what the Church has published before, Saints seems a huge step in the right direction. This volume of Saints is titled Boldly, Nobly, and Independent, and covers the time period 1893 to 1955. It's a really fascinating period, one in which the Church underwent extensive transformation. In many ways, this is the period during which the Church transformed from the “pioneer Church” into the beginnings of the Church we would recognize today. The digital version of this volume of Saints is available for free on the Church website and in the Church History section of the Gospel Library app. Print copies will be available in coming weeks in the Church's online store and at retail outlets.Lisa Olsen Tait is a historian, writer, and specialist in women's history at the Church History Department. She is a general editor on the Saints series and, on volume 3, contributed subject-matter expertise in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century and on many aspects of women's history. She is also a co-chair of the Mormon Women's History Initiative Team (MWHIT), an independent group that fosters scholarship and networking in the field.
