Overworked: How to Find Rest in Your Good Shepherd

Faith Over Fear

When responsibilities pile up and the people and circumstances you care about feel dependent on you, it can be easy to slip from faithful diligence into anxious striving. We work harder, plan further ahead, and try to control outcomes, often without realizing fear is driving our efforts. In this episode of Faith Over Fear, Jennifer Slattery talks with Bible teacher and bestselling author Dr. Tara Dew about the peace available to us when we remember who our Shepherd is and learn to entrust ourselves and those we love to His care. Drawing from Psalm 23 and insights from her book Overflowing Peace: What God Says About a Peace-Filled Life, Tara shares how understanding the nature and care of our Good Shepherd can help us rest, recognize when fear is fueling our work, and follow God even when we can’t see where He’s leading. Together, she and Jennifer discuss practical ways to shift our focus from what feels dependent on us to God’s faithfulness, provision, and guidance—and why we can trust that the Shepherd who leads us into unfamiliar territory already knows the path ahead. In a world full of noise, pressure, and endless demands, how do we stay focused on what matters most? In this message from Mark 1:35–39, we follow Jesus at a pivotal moment in His ministry. Instead of chasing popularity or meeting every expectation, Jesus withdraws to pray, listens to the Father, and stays faithful to His mission. This sermon explores three simple but life-changing priorities we see in the life of Christ: listening to God through Scripture-shaped prayer, living on mission to seek and love those far from Him, and moving forward together as the body of Christ. Through relatable stories and practical encouragement, we're reminded that the loudest voices aren't always the truest—and that following Jesus means staying anchored in His Word while joining Him in His work.Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, distracted, or simply longing to grow deeper in your faith, this message will encourage you to rest in what mattered most to Jesus.

You Can Find Rest in the Quiet MomentsHey there. Welcome back to Your Quiet Moment. I'm so glad you're here with me today.Today I want to talk to you about something that feels almost impossible in the world we live in. Finding rest. Not the kind of rest where you're collapsed on the couch at eleven PM scrolling through your phone. I'm talking about real rest. The kind where your nervous system actually gets to exhale. Where your shoulders drop from your ears and your jaw unclenches and your brain gets a little bit of silence. We'll explore what real rest does for your body, why we're so afraid of quiet moments, and how you can start collecting pockets of peace throughout your day — without needing a dramatic change of scenery or a complete shutdown of your responsibilities. We'll also do some gentle breathwork together and close with affirmations to remind you that rest is not something you earn. It's something you deserve.Find a comfortable seat, take a breath, and let's begin.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━SHOW NOTES━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━TIMESTAMPS[00:00] Opening[02:30] Settling In — A Breath Together[04:15] The Theme Part One — What Real Rest Does[08:45] The Theme Part Two — Guilt, Rest, and Permission[14:30] Breathwork — Box Breathing Exercise[17:00] Affirmations — Permission to Rest[19:30] Closing━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━AFFIRMATIONS• I give myself permission to rest without guilt.• I do not have to earn the right to be still.• Quiet moments are not wasted time. Send us your feedback — we're listeningPsalm 62:5 — Find Rest, O My Soul, in God Alone Live from London, England — where faith meets the world in daily prayer and global hope. Hobart • Hamilton • Singapore • Nashville • Buenos Aires REST • ASSURANCE • HOPE Good evening, and welcome to DailyPrayer.uk. I'm Reverend Ben Cooper. Thank you for ending this day with me. Before we close our eyes tonight, let's pause together, open God's Word and allow our souls to become quiet in the presence of God There are evenings when our bodies are tired, yet our thoughts continue to race. We remember conversations, revisit unfinished tasks and wonder about tomorrow. Yet the deepest rest we need is not found simply by sleeping. It is found by placing our hope in the Lord, whose love remains constant and whose presence gently quiets every anxious thought. Psalm 62:5 (NIV) “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” What a beautiful invitation to receive tonight. God welcomes us to bring our whole selves into His presence—the questions we still carry, the gratitude we have discovered and the hopes we hold for tomorrow. As our hearts become settled in Him, we discover a peace that reaches beneath our circumstances and steadies us from within. Tomorrow will arrive in its own time, but tonight our souls may rest safely in the faithful love of God. So this evening, let's gently remind ourselves that fear will not win, because Jesus Christ is our unfailing hope, and in Him our hearts find lasting rest. Father, thank You for Your constant love throughout this day. Thank You for every quiet reminder of Your goodness and for the peace You freely give to those who trust in You. Lord Jesus, bless every listener tonight. Bring healing to those who are unwell, comfort to those who feel alone, reassurance to those carrying tomorrow's concerns and refreshing rest to every weary soul. Help us finish this day with our hope resting securely in You. Holy Spirit, quiet every restless thought, renew our inner strength and prepare us to greet tomorrow with peaceful hearts and joyful expectation. Across the world, from Hobart to Hamilton, from Singapore to Nashville and Buenos Aires, may every listener rest tonight with renewed hope, knowing that their souls are safely held in the loving care of God. Jesús, que mi alma descanse plenamente en Tu amor esta noche. Jesus, que a minha alma descanse plenamente no Teu amor esta noite. We need rest. Without rest, we suffer. Studies show that with too little rest, people experience fatigue and physical imbalances that result in decreased attention, poor decisions, and even speech impairment. People who take no breaks during the workday have lower productivity than those who take periodic breaks. Christians know they need more than sleep or breaks, more than physical rest. We need spiritual rest. The only place to find that type of rest is Jesus. Jesus provides more than a pause in work or enjoyable recreation. Jesus provides the removal of our sins, the cleansing of our guilty consciences, and a gentle new yoke of discipleship in the freedom of the gospel. In Jesus, Christians find rest right now from burdens and battles, and eventually eternal rest in heaven.

From “In the Beginning” to Amen // Searching for God Knows What  1 Kings 19:1-3 (NKJV)“And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.' And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.” 1 Kings 19:4 (NKJV)“But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, ‘It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!'" Even Elijah Had a Breaking Point God Doesn't Abandon Us but Rather Meets Us at Our Point of Weakness 1 Kings 19:5 (NKJV)“Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, ‘Arise and eat.' Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So, he ate and drank and lay down again.” 1 Kings 19:7 (NKJV)“And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, ‘Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.' So, he arose and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.” God Ushers Him into His Forty Day Journey 1 Kings 19:9 (NKJV)“And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?' So, he said, ‘I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.'” Second Point of Hope - He Does Not Abandon Us in the Darkness of Fear and Doubt 1 Kings 19:11 (NKJV)“Then He said, ‘Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.' And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.”    Exodus 19:16-19 (NLT)“On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram's horn, and all the people trembled. Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a brick kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently. As the blast of the ram's horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God thundered his reply.” Exodus 20:18-20 (NLT)“When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram's horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear. And they said to Moses, ‘You speak to us, and we will listen. But don't let God speak directly to us, or we will die!'” God's Declaration in His Very Existence and Being… His Presence, His Breath… 1 Kings 19:13 (NKJV)“So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?'” 1 Kings 19:14-15 (NKJV)“And he said, ‘I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.' Then the LORD said to him: ‘Go, return on your way…'” “Let's get back to it…” Third Point of Hope - God Is Not Done with You Because You Are Wandering or on a Dark Place Even In Our Faith We Are Mortal Find Rest for Your Mind and Body… When We Are Spent Physically and Mentally, We Are Really Vulnerable God Has Not Abandoned You… He Is Not Condemning You; He Wants to Encourage You, Strengthen You and Sustain You… God Is Not Wanting to Use You Up and Discard You… He Wants You to Find Rest and Be Restored 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)”CAST ALL YOUR CARES AND ANXIETIES ON ME, BECAUSE I CARE FOR YOU..." He Goes with You and Prepares a Place He WILL Meet with You

Today's Bible Verse: "But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content." — Psalm 131:2 Psalm 131:2 paints a beautiful picture of spiritual contentment and trust. David compares his soul to a weaned child resting peacefully with its mother—not anxious for what it can receive, but secure simply because of who it is with. Are you carrying guilt from your past… or struggling with shame that won't let go? In this powerful message, we break down the difference between guilt and shame and reveal how Jesus brings true freedom. Discover how repentance removes guilt, why shame is a tactic of the enemy, and how you can finally enter into the rest God promised. Through scriptures like Psalm 38, Matthew 11, and the story of the woman at the well, this sermon shows how Jesus doesn't just forgive—you He restores, renews, and walks with you. If you've ever felt weighed down, stuck in regret, or unable to move forward, this message will help you experience real freedom through God's grace. This sermon explores the powerful difference between guilt and shame, and how both impact a believer's ability to experience true rest in Christ. Guilt is real—it means we've sinned and must respond through repentance. Shame, however, is a tactic of the enemy—it lingers even after forgiveness and tries to convince us we're still guilty. Using Psalm 38, the message highlights how sin becomes a heavy burden that no one can carry alone. The only solution is coming to God—because sin, left untreated, leads to destruction. Jesus' invitation in Matthew 11:28 is central: “Come to Me… and I will give you rest.” This is not about more work—it's about walking with Him (being “yoked” to Him), not striving alone. The sermon teaches that: Many believers are forgiven but not free, because they still carry shame True rest is impossible if guilt or shame remains active in your life The gospel is not just salvation—it is a new way of living under Christ's authority The story of the woman at the well (John 4) demonstrates: Jesus exposes guilt not to condemn, but to heal Once confronted, she receives grace and becomes a witness to others Transformation begins when we stop deflecting and start surrendering   guilt vs shame sermon grace of God teaching how to overcome guilt biblically freedom from shame in Christ Matthew 11:28 explained woman at the well sermon Christian teaching on repentance how to find rest in Jesus spiritual burden and freedom gospel message grace and forgiveness #GuiltAndGrace #FreedomInChrist #NoMoreShame #JesusSaves #BiblicalTruth #ChristianLiving #Repentance #GraceOfGod #FaithJourney #ChurchOnline #SermonClip #SpiritualFreedom

Do you ever feel like your time with God does not look the way it used to before motherhood? In this episode, I'm talking about the quiet guilt many Christian moms carry when prayer, Bible reading, and closeness with Jesus feel more interrupted, more woven into daily life, and less like the long quiet stretches they once imagined. I'm sharing a devotional reading from Jesus Calling that brought me a lot of peace in this season, and I want to help you see that scripture still matters deeply, prayer still matters deeply, and your walk with God still matters deeply, even when this season looks different than the one before it. I'm talking about prayer while washing dishes, worship in the car, scripture carried through the day, and letting our children hear real faith in real life. This is not about lowering the importance of time with the Lord. It is about letting go of false guilt and learning to walk closely with Jesus in the life you are actually living right now. If you've ever felt like being “just a mom” isn't enough, this episode is for you. So many moms quietly carry the weight of wondering whether what they do all day really matters. In a world that celebrates visible success, motherhood can feel small, repetitive, and easy to overlook—even when you know deep down that it matters. In this episode, I'm talking about the quiet pressure many mothers feel to prove their worth, and why that pressure can leave even faithful, loving moms questioning whether their role is enough. We'll gently come back to the truth about presence, the hidden value of motherhood, and the deeper place our identity is meant to rest. If you've ever wrestled with feeling unseen, unimportant, or like you should be doing more, I hope this conversation helps you exhale and remember that your life is not too small. Your presence matters more than this culture wants you to believe, and your worth was never meant to come from what you produce. It comes from being known and loved by God. XOXO, Katie

Have you ever said yes to something you technically had time for… only to feel emotionally drained afterward? You weren’t overbooked. You weren’t incapable. And yet something felt heavy. If helping others leaves you exhausted — even when you’re good at it — your stress may be telling you something deeper. In this episode, Bonnie explores why emotional exhaustion is often an identity signal rather than just a workload problem. Through one encounter with Jesus and a fresh look at Isaiah 43, you’ll discover the better question to ask when you feel tired — and the new thing God may be inviting you to step into. Key Takeaways Why being helpful can quietly drain you emotionally How identity — not workload — often drives exhaustion Why emotional capacity matters more than external capacity The deeper question to ask when you feel tired How Isaiah 43 reframes stress as an invitation into something new Breath PrayerInhale: Do not dwell on the past…Exhale: See, I am doing a new thing…Inhale: I am making a way in the wilderness…Exhale: Rivers in the desert… Scripture “Do not call to mind the former things;do not dwell in the past.See, I am doing a new thing!I am making a way in the wildernessand rivers in the desert.”— Isaiah 43:18–19 Pastor Dan Westman Video Message"Healing for the Soul" at Peninsula Bible Churchhttps://www.youtube.com/live/prGXpfamHvk?si=vhyDxJnltPi91vJ7&t=2475 → Take Bonnie's Soul Care Courses: Lent Wellness Study (Seasonal Offering) A 6-Week Healing Renewal For Your Heart With Jesus in His LoveRegister at https://soulcareschool.mykajabi.com/offers/mqr8VY2X/checkout Breathe Rest with Jesus:A Loving Course to Create Wellness Rhythms of Peace with God’s Promises Register at https://thebonniegray.com/soulcareschool-breatherest/ Breathe Joy with Jesus:Create Happy Wellness Rhythms to Cultivate Joy with God's PromisesRegister at https://thebonniegray.com/soulcareschool/ Praying the Psalms for Wellness:A Life-giving 8-Week Wellness Course to Release Stress, Renew Peace & Find Rest for Your HearRegister at https://thebonniegray.com/soulcareschool-prayingpsalms/ → Take the FREE Soul Care Quiz at soulcarequiz.comGet your personal wellness assessment and learn which area of soul care you need most. → Eucalyptus Shower Steamers for instant calm at Bonnie's Soul Care Store Join the Soul Care Newsletter:https://thebonniegray.com/subscribe Watch YouTube Devotionals:https://youtube.com/thebonniegray Bestselling Books by Bonnie:https://amzn.to/3NpVYQd Follow Bonnie on Instagram & Facebook:@thebonniegray Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

So many women are functioning in hidden burnout. Still showing up and serving. Still carrying responsibility. Still faithfully asking God for strength and trying to do the right things.  And… still feeling depleted. This episode is really about one simple but honest question: why am I resting, but still exhausted? Not because we don't believe in rest. Not because we don't value it. But because what we're doing to rest often isn't touching the places where exhaustion actually lives. This isn't about doing more to rest. It's about understanding how rest actually works. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: [00:00] Why Trying to Rest Isn't the Same as Being Restored [01:00] Why Doesn't God's Promise of Rest Always Feel Accessible? [03:00] What Does It Mean to Remain in the Vine Instead of Striving for Rest? [05:00] Why Are We So Confused About What Kind of Rest We Actually Need? [06:00] How Physical Rest Restores the Body [08:00] How Mental and Emotional Rest Heal Inner Overload [10:00] Why Spiritual Rest Creates Foundational Peace [12:00] How Sensory, Creative, and Social Rest Restore the Soul [17:00] Why Understanding Your Rest Needs Changes Everything [19:00] How to Begin Receiving Rest Instead of Trying to Produce It  Join me for the Virtual Rest Retreat in Feb 2026!  Are you exhausted and in need of deep rest (but can't get away)? If you are feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or stretched too thin, you're not alone. Many of us carry heavy responsibilities—at work, at home, and in our communities—and it can feel like there's no place to set them down. In moments like these, it's important to pause and remember that proper rest is not a luxury; it's essential.  Jesus offers a simple invitation: come to me, and you will find rest. The message still resonates—when we stop trying to carry everything on our own, our burdens can feel lighter. Entrust them your cares to him, the one who cares for you.  Each day, Our Lord desires to lead us from restless activity to a restful breath. Rest in Him.
