In the ongoing litigation over whether the Trump administration violated Judge James Boasberg's order to turn around planes which were carrying Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador - DOJ attorneys are now refusing to provide additional information about who was deported and when the planes took off and landed. Those attorneys are claiming that such information can't be disclosed under the "state secrets" doctrine. Glenn takes on the contention that the information being sought by Judge Boasberg to determine if the Trump administration violated his orders and should be held in contempt - can't safely be disclosed to the judge, who, incidentally, is also the Chief Judge of the U.S. Alien Terrorist Removal Court. We're a bit late this week, because following our recent conversation with Justice Breyer, we had the opportunity to speak at length with Judge William Pryor, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, former Alabama Attorney General, and an important member of the Judicial Conference the “national policymaking body for the federal courts.” Judge Pryor has had a colorful career, having effectively prosecuted another judge for misconduct, had a contentious confirmation hearing, clerked for a titan among judges in Judge Wisdom, and served at the highest level short of the Supreme Court for many years.  We discuss a wide range of matters from judicial safety, to the importance of following Court orders, to enforcing civil rights laws, and much more.  The discussion took place in two parts;  with an audience of undergraduates, and then with an audience of Yale Law School students, many from the Federalist Society chapter at Yale; this produced a great variety of topics. PRESS REVIEW – Wednesday, March 19: We look at reactions in the press after US Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr issues a rare rebuke of Donald Trump. Also: cartoonists react to Trump and Vladimir Putin's phone call on Ukraine. Finally, we discover the best of the best in British wildlife photography. We begin with a very public spat between US Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr and US President Donald Trump. As The Washington Post reports, it dates back to events over the weekend. Last Saturday, Chief Judge for the US District Court for DC James Boasberg ordered the Trump administration to turn around an aircraft deporting alleged gang members to Venezuela. The Trump administration justified the flight by the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, previously invoked only during wartime. The planes continued to their destinations but the White House has said it did not defy the judge's directive. The order, though, prompted Trump to rant against Boasberg on social media, calling him a "radical left lunatic" who "should be impeached".Throwing around the word "impeached" did not go down well in the US Supreme Court. In a statement, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr issued a sharp, rare rebuke that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. It's the most public battle between the two since 2018, as Politico notes.The reaction in the press has been mixed, however. The Guardian'swriter argues that Judge Roberts, a conservative justice, has paved the way for the impunity that enabled Trump to run for and win a second term. Steven Greenhouse reminds us that Roberts, since becoming chief justice in 2005, has sought to boost corporate America and consolidate Republican power. He was also author of the "startling" ruling that gave presidents far-reaching immunity from prosecution last year. This also helped lay the groundwork for Trump's increasingly authoritarian presidency. Greenhouse asks: how could Roberts not realise that this would only serve to embolden Trump even more?The conservative US magazine National Review offers a different perspective, saying it's quite possible that Trump's alleged noncompliance with the Boasberg order on the planes could be evidence in a future Democrat-led impeachment trial of Trump. If that were to happen, the chief justice would be presiding but he has now destroyed his impartiality with this statement. For that reason, the Review says it would have been better to refrain from publicly scolding the president.We turn next to reaction from the illustrated press on Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's Tuesday phone call on Ukraine peace talks. The announcement of a 30-day pause on bombing energy infrastructure is seen sceptically by Chapatte, the Swiss paper Le Temp's cartoonist, who sees Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky being strangled by the telephone cord itself. Andy Bunday, meanwhile, sees a phone with limited options in the Oval Office. Press one to disarm Ukraine, press two to give away land, press three to give away power plants, press four to bar Ukraine from NATO.One of the most visual cartoons is from Pete Songi, who evokes the "art of the dealski". He sees Vladimir Putin in his bathtub with a bath mat emblazoned with MYKRAINE, and the coalition of the killing, with a hockey helmet in the corner. Among the agreements between the two leaders is, bizarrely, that Russia and the US play a game of ice hockey, prompting British tabloid The Sun to ask "What the puck?"Finally: we bring you the winners of the British Wildlife Photography awards. Simon Withyman won the Urban Wildlife category for his picture of a Bristol fox. Also in Bristol, John Waters won the Animal Behaviour category with a picture of fantastical speckled wood butterflies. I have appeared before Judge Carol Ricciardello many times over the years for security clearance revocation hearings. She served for the last twenty years as an Administrative Judge with the Department of Defense (DOD)  Defense Office of Hearings and Appeals (DOHA) where she heard and decided over 1,700 security clearance cases during her tenure. This was really the second job in her career, as she first served for over 20 years on active-duty with the United States Navy, rising to ultimately serve as the Chief Judge of the Navy-Marine Corps Trial Judiciary covering and supervising all Navy and Marine Corps Trial Judges around the world. Carol retired from the U.S. Navy as a highly decorated 0-6 Captain.  I have always liked her spirit, and I found her to be very smart, thoughtful, and straight forward.  I have been waiting for her retirement in order to do this podcast with her to learn her story.  I hope you enjoy it!   PS. The Federal Circuit’s first Chief Judge, the Honorable Howard T. Markey, announced, “In our Court there will be an opinion explaining enough to tell you what the law is in every case.” He added, “We do not just render a one-worded decision and go away.” In recent years, however, the Federal Circuit has routinely issued one-word “judgment[s] of affirmance without opinion” under Federal Circuit Rule 36(a), saying only “AFFIRMED” rather than issuing an opinion. Salahuddin Ahmed, a constitutional lawyer and expert from Pakistan, visited the City Bar Middle East and North African Affairs Committee to discuss the 26th Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan and its impact on the independence of the Supreme Court and the Rule of Law. The subsequent challenge is whether courts should ever be involved in determining the validity of constitutional amendments (even if clearly aimed at undermining democracy or the rule of law) or whether it must always be left to the political process? In the past, the judiciary in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh have declared they have the power to strike down constitutional amendments if Parliament attempts to subvert the democratic essence of the Constitution by eliminating fundamental rights or the independence of judiciary. Serving since 2014, she oversees the county's Mental Health and Parent Accountability Courts, focusing on mental health treatment and transforming non-payers of child support. Harris is also president of Georgia’s Council of Superior Court Judges and has worked internationally to support Georgia's justice system. Previously, she was an assistant district attorney, notable for trying Georgia's first felony elder abuse case and drafting human trafficking laws. Harris is active in community service and lives in Smyrna with her husband and rescue dog. STORY 3: Cobb Eyes Security Upgrades for Bus Stations Cobb County is considering a $300,000 contract with Tarian Group to enhance security at its Marietta and Cumberland CobbLinc Transfer Stations. The decision follows the recent shooting of a MARTA bus driver in DeKalb County. If approved, unarmed guards will patrol the stations daily to deter criminal activity and respond to security threats. The initiative aims to improve safety for transit users and operators. The contract, funded equally by a Federal Transit Administration grant and local funds, will be voted on by the Board of Commissioners. Children's Healthcare, with over 14,000 employees, manages 1.2 million annual visits, including 111,000 from Cobb. Hyland discussed the new Arthur Blank Hospital, a 19-story pediatric facility in Brookhaven, which opened ahead of schedule. The hospital consolidates services from Egleston and Emory Children’s Center. Hyland also mentioned upcoming expansions at Truist Park and involvement with Atlanta United, emphasizing Children's commitment to Cobb's youth. STORY 5: Proposed Atlanta Road Whataburger Draws Concern Whataburger is planning a sixth Cobb County location on Atlanta Road, near I-285, requiring a site plan amendment and rezoning of adjacent land. The proposal, a remnant from a road project, will be reviewed by the Planning Commission on Feb. 4 and the Board of Commissioners on Feb. 18. Concerns from local residents, including Alette Stache, focus on potential traffic, safety, and noise issues, as the site is near a residential area. Residents have suggested changes to the site plan, such as altering the building's orientation and limiting operating hours, but await further communication from Whataburger. Break: STORY 6: Cobb County Water System Reports 1,980 Gallon Sewage Overflow The Cobb County Water System reported a 1,980-gallon wastewater overflow on Jan. 13 at 1631 Timber Lane NW in Kennesaw, caused by rags blocking the system. The overflow, which lasted from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., discharged into a tributary of Noonday Creek. Crews used a jet machine to clear the blockage and cleaned the spill area, spreading lime to mitigate effects. No debris or fish deaths were observed. STORY 7: McCall Primary and Norton Park Recognized as Distinguished and Reward Schools by GaDOE The Georgia Department of Education honored schools for exceptional academic achievement or improvement, including Title I Distinguished and Reward Schools. McCall Primary was named a "Distinguished" school, and Norton Park Elementary a "Reward" school, recognizing top-performing and most improved Title I schools, respectively. Distinguished Schools rank in the top 5% for performance, while Reward Schools are in the top 5% for improvement. It's not just the MAGA crowd who are concerned with government waste and inefficiency. In a convincing Wall Street Journal op-ed, best-selling tech author Larry Downes questions the need for a thousand Social Security offices around the country. Downes argues that the federal government's resistance to digital transformation has resulted in staggeringly low user satisfaction rates - just 12% for federal government services. Despite more than 85% of federal workers being based outside Washington, there have been few serious attempts to modernize these services through e-government initiatives. While the incoming Trump administration's "Doge" team has talked about reforming government, Downes remains skeptical about implementation, citing political obstacles rather than technical challenges. He notes that while Estonia and Denmark offer successful e-government models, American reform efforts face unique hurdles, including congressional resistance to closing local offices and bureaucratic procurement processes that often outlast technology cycles. Downes suggests that modernization could significantly improve service delivery while reducing costs, though it would impact federal employment. He emphasizes that this isn't about privatization but rather bringing government services into the digital age - something that could potentially serve as a safeguard against authoritarian overreach by systematizing government processes in transparent, digital systems.Larry Downes is the author of five books on the impact of technology on business, society, and the law. Yerrid gave his time, costs, and efforts for nearly a year to the people of Florida as a public service. As a result, The Florida Justice Association presented him with the Outstanding Pro Bono Award, a special recognition given only every several years. Yerrid also was retained by the City of Tampa to hold BP responsible for the economic damages it sustained as a result of that disaster. He successfully obtained a $27.5 million settlement in July 2015. It was the largest recovery paid to any municipality by British Petroleum. In the 1990's, as the youngest lawyer appointed by the late Governor Lawton Chiles to an 11-member “Dream Team” of private lawyers, Steve undertook a leading role in Florida's landmark lawsuit against the previously unbeaten cigarette industry. The case resulted in the biggest monetary settlement that had occurred in U.S. history, ultimately topping $17 billion. In addition, he and the Dream Team members succeeded in obtaining unprecedented advertising concessions that permanently prevented marketing aimed at children, eliminated cigarette billboards, vending machines, Joe Camel, the Marlboro Man, and established youth tobacco prevention programs across the United States. As a result of his success, tenacity and integrity, Steve has long been sought out to take on important and precedent-setting cases. He was honored to be appointed as Special Counsel to the Office of the Chief Judge (13th Judicial Circuit) and the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges. In representing Florida's entire judiciary, he successfully argued before the Florida Supreme Court and protected state judges and staff from public disclosure of confidential records and internal communications within the court system. Yerrid is a lifetime member of the prestigious Inner Circle of Advocates, an “invitation only” organization whose membership consists of the top 100 trial lawyers in the United States. The prophet Nephi is so heartbroken about the wickedness of the Nephites (the Gadianton Robbers had overtaken the government) that he goes out and prays on his garden tower.  Some people in the city stopped to listen.  When Nephi noticed a crowd gathered he started to teach the people and prophesy.  Telling them if they did not repent they would all be destroyed.  Nephi told them their Chief Judge was murdered by his brother.  5 men ran off to see if that was true.  It was!  The Gadianton Robbers tried to get the people to believe Nephi had arranged with someone to kill the Chief Judge.  Nephi said to go and ask his brother if he had killed his brother.  He said He will act shocked but when you ask about the blood on his cloak he will confess.  Everything happened just as Nephi said it would.  Some people believed he had to be a prophet, but most did not  want to believe so explained it away.  We are so blessed to have prophets that teach us and warn us.

More young people have been shot and killed so far this year in King County than all of 2023. Judge Veronica Galvan of King County's Juvenile Court talks about the challenges youth crime is posing for the juvenile system from the courts, to detention to the efforts to rehabilitate the young people committing the crimes. The King County Council voted recently to keep the juvenile detention center open despite County Executive Dow Constantine's 2020 commitment to close the facility by 2025. Moroni and his Nephite captains have been engaged in war against their enemies a long time.  They are short on supplies and are not getting additional soldiers for help.  They are in serious trouble.  Moroni is very upset with the government that they are not sending the additional help His men need.  In his anger he writes a mean letter to the Chief Judge, Pahoran.  He says some very unkind things and many things that were not true.  Pahoran does not get angry.  Pahoran writes back and says not only that he forgives Moroni for being upset, but that He loves him for his great heart and desire to do what is right.  Pahoran is a great example to us to not take offense and get upset back.  But to forgive and focus on the good in others.

Following law school, Judge Dillon practiced law at Young Moore Henderson and was licensed by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission as a broker. In addition, he has taught various real estate focused courses at both UNC School of Law and Campbell School of Law as an adjunct professor. In this episode, we feature excerpts from a 2004 interview with late Judge Robinson O. Everett (1928-2009), former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for Armed Forces. Everett graduated from Harvard University at age 19 and was admitted into the North Carolina Bar Association by age 22. Originally from Durham, North Carolina, Everett was part of Duke Law School's faculty for over 50 years - founding the University's Center on Law Ethics and National Security. In the interview, Everett shares of the importance of mentorship, his family, and the many different facets of law as he traveled from North Carolina to Washington over the course of his more than 50-year career.   "One of the nice things about being a lawyer is that you occasionally have opportunities to do something that will be very far-reaching," Everett said on the podcast. Justice Patricia M. DiMango serves as one of three judges on Amazon Freevee's Tribunal Justice, created by Judge Judy Sheindlin. Most recently, Justice DiMango was a judge on the Emmy-nominated series, "Hot Bench." Justice DiMango was first appointed to serve as a Judge of the Criminal Courts for the City of New York by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. She became the first Italian-American woman ever appointed to that position. Thereafter, she was elected to the New York State Supreme Court bench in the 2nd and 11th Judicial Districts, and again was the first Italian-American woman elected to that position. Justice DiMango's reputation was that of a stern but fair judge combined with a balance of street smarts and legal knowledge. In the course of her judicial career she gained public recognition for handling high-profile trials, particularly those involving murders of young children, other crimes against children and hate-crime murders. She was also recognized for handling large volumes of serious felony cases from their arraignment through trial. Justice DiMango became further known for her efficiency in closing a vast number of cases in a fair and timely fashion. Her judicial acumens came to the attention of the Chief Judge of the State of New York and selected her to spearhead his initiative to reduce the backlog of felony matters in the Bronx. This initiative garnered front-page coverage in The New York Times. These assignments resulted in her appointment to the position of Administrative Judge of the New York State Supreme Court, Criminal Term, Brooklyn, Kings County. Upon her graduation from college, Justice DiMango was an elementary school teacher in the New York City Public Schools, focusing on special education of children with emotional and cognitive needs. During her teaching years and before law school, she received her Master's Degree. In addition to her Juris Doctorate, Justice DiMango holds a Master's Degree from Columbia University in Developmental Psychology and a Bachelor's Degree cum laude from Brooklyn College in both Psychology and Education.  Thereafter, she went on to receive her law degree from St. John's University where she graduated in the top of her class, and received awards and scholarships in recognition for her other academic achievements. In 2012, she received the Alumna of the Year Award from Brooklyn College and was also the recipient of the prestigious Rapallo Award. In 2013, she was the recipient of the Distinguished Judiciary Award from the Catholic Lawyers Guild and was named "Woman of the Year" by the New York State Supreme Court Officers Association. In 2014, she was named "Woman of the Year" by The New York State Court Officers Association. Additionally, she served as Master of Ceremonies for the NY State Broadcasters Association Awards. In 2015, Justice DiMango was the Grand Marshal of the Brooklyn Columbus Day Parade. She was also recognized as being the "Woman Of The Year" for the Home Reporter and Brooklyn Spectator's "Kings of Kings" event. Justice DiMango was also the honored celebrity speaker at The Greater New York Dental Association National Convention.  In 2016, she was named "Woman of The Year" by the Italian Charities of America. In 2019, Justice DiMango was selected to be the keynote speaker by the Brooklyn Daily Eagle for its "Champions of Justice" event honoring outstanding women in the court system. Justice DiMango has appeared on numerous television programs, including "The View," "Wendy Williams," "Rachael Ray" and "Steve Harvey" and can be heard on many talk radio shows and podcasts. She has also been featured giving legal insight on stories on "Entertainment Tonight," Fox News, "VH1," "Banfield" and "Inside Edition" among others. Upon her graduation from law school, she served five-and-a-half years as an Assistant District Attorney in the Kings County District Attorney's Office. During her tenure there, she was given the extra responsibility of being cross-designated as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. She later worked as a law clerk in both Kings and Queens Counties to Supreme Court Justices Steven Fisher, Reinaldo Rivera and Luigi Marano. During this time, Justice DiMango volunteered as a Small Claims Court Arbitrator. Nigel Matthews is the Chief Judge and on the Selection Committee for the annual La Jolla Concours d'Elegance.
