This this year, thanks to several back-to-back, major weather systems, several West Coast resorts are looking at snow totals in the 600-inches-plus range that might keep the season going well into spring. This month also marks the runup to Mountain Travel Symposium, our annual ski and mountain-destination conference, and our Focus on Ski and Mountain Travel cover story. In this episode, host Rebecca Tobin and Robert Silk, who covers ski and mountain travel for Travel Weekly, talk with Tom Foley, senior vice president of business intelligence at Inntopia, and Patrick Lacey, the public relations manager at Palisades Tahoe, about mountain ecosystems, how those snow totals impact visitation, this year's lodging trends and how to get people to move from trying skiing to actually becoming a skier. This was recorded March 17 and was edited for length and clarity. Episode Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by G Adventures. At the end of this episode, stay on for a bonus interview with Jeremy Brady, national sales manager for G Adventures, and Mary Pat Sullivan, the executive vice president of marketing for Northstar and Travel Weekly. Patrick Lacey's son Will was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma when he was 5 months old. When he turned 2, the Lacey family was told that unfortunately Will could not be cured. On today's podcast, Patrick will talk about how he then went to work to make sure that this diagnosis was going to be an incorrect one. After meeting Dr. Giselle Sholler, who had lost a patient to Neuroblastoma previously and was trying to find a patient that she could cure, the 2 of them and others went to work with Patrick raising money, and Dr. Sholler working on a drug called DFMO which showed promise for Will and many other pediatric cancer patients involved  in the Neuroblastoma fight. After seeing great success, the company who owned the drug shut Patrick and the doctor out from further purchasing of it, preferring to set up their own clinical trial.  They decided, along with a woman named Meryl Whitmer, to set up their own Pharmaceutical company and in 106 days, they were in business themselves, having given their first patient their drug in early 2015.The success that they have had has been groundbreaking for Neuroblastoma patients and Patrick's son Will is now a senior in high school and in the process of applying to college.

What's the purpose? Some want to lose weight, find a spouse, get a new job, work towards completing something; others have goals that they strive for. Co-host Mike said that there are a lot of genre films he hasn't seen that he wants to get to, so as a New Year's resolution, why not ask all the co-hosts to see some film they always wanted to see and then discuss. So each co-host chose a genre movie that they had never seen and decided to watch it and give their opinions. Films we discuss are The Creature From the Black Lagoon, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), The Quatermass Xperiment, Nosferatu (1922), Kwaidan (1964), and Mario Bava's Black Sabbath. A listener of the show, Chris Genro, also gives his opinion on a film he had always wanted to see but never had, the 1970's backwoods horror film Rituals. Also discussed is a top ten list by Patrick Lacey on some of the best films released to disc in 2016 as well as his review of the new Vinegar Syndrome release of the holiday horror flick, Jack Frost. Also, actor Aston Elliot is brought on to discuss his role in the genre flick Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla and other films he has done in the Australian movie scene. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Talk about a trailer ruining a movie. It happens all the time. You see something interesting, you check out the trailer, and it gives away one of the biggest plot twists in the film. Well, the trailer for the new horror film, He Never Died, does just that. Fortunately some of your co-hosts hadn't seen the trailer, while those who did, were still able to review it even with some things spoiled. He Never Died stars Henry Rollins as Jack, a loner, who seems to be moving in slow motion. He sleeps a lot, avoids people as best anyone can, and keeps to himself. But unfortunately for him, things keep catching up with him, including his past. His teenage daughter suddenly appears at his doorstep after not seeing her since she was a baby, some goons come to him asking about the location of one of his few "friends", and a mysterious man dressed in black seems to follow him wherever he goes. There just may be a little bit more to Jack than he's letting on. A horror film it is, yet it is surprising quirky. Henry Rollins shines in a roll that seems made for him. Brooding with an uninterested side to his surroundings, the character of Jack turns out to be a fascinating antihero. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new film, recently added to Netflix, and where it stands among this years early releases. Also, author Patrick Lacey talks about a new blu-ray release on a new Terror Tantrum. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. 1987's Prince of Darkness is the second film in what some people have called John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy". The first was 1982's The Thing while the third was 1995's In the Mouth of Madness. Though each has no thematic relationship to the others, each is in ways a first look at the beginning of a way an apocalypse could happen, in a supernatural way. Prince of Darkness, though in no way the classic that The Thing has become, has grown a cult following in many ways. A priest (played by Donald Pleasance) invites a renowned university scientist/professor to a nonfunctioning Roman Catholic church to investigate something within the basement. Very much intrigued, Professor Birack groups together a handful of graduate students and colleagues to set up camp within the church grounds to study this very bizarre object. Soon, his team begin to group together not just scientific facts but also the supernatural aspects that the priest seems so worried about. Twenty-eight years later, has the film aged well? With its interesting plot points including quantum physics, humanity and religion having origins in outerspace, and mathematical computations forming into supposition, the film can be looked at in many ways, whether simply as a drive-in horror flick or a metaphysical theatrical play depends on the eye of the beholder. Dark Discussions takes a shot. Also author Patrick Lacey discusses the disc release of The Brood in a new Terror Tantrum. The fifth of the rare Bits, Pieces, and Body Parts episodes is here. Your co-hosts go on about a number of interesting topics. Also we discuss the Oscars, how two genre legends were memorialized (Wes Crave and Leonard Nimoy), and how many genre films (or films with genre roots) won awards including The Revenant, Room, The Hateful Eight, Mad Max, and Ex Machina. Lastly there's an interview with director, screenwriter, and animator Michael Neel who is behind such cult flicks as Drive-In Horror Show and Infinite Santa 8000. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Big names, big budget, and big story. Though its a film that was released in New York City and Los Angeles late 2015 to qualify for the Oscars, The Revenant, the new film by Academy Award winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, spread to all theaters early January 2016. And interestingly, the reviews mostly positive have a bit of mixed feel. 83% positive reviews on RottenTomatoes seems pretty sweet for any film. But for a film that received more Oscar nominations than all the rest? Based on the non-fiction novel, The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, by Michael Punke, the story is about the true escapades of frontiersman Hugh Glass and his journey of deliverance after his trapping party is massacred by Arikara, his body is broken by a grizzly bear, and his life is turned upside down from betrayal and treachery in a time that was uncultivated and a place that was remote. The film has become a huge success with audiences and continues to be a top ten performer at the box office.
