Join Justin as he chats with director and producer Bill Lustig about the preservation of cult cinema, his uncle Jake “Raging Bull” LaMotta, jump-starting his career behind the scenes in adult films, Maniac, and more!William "Bill" Lustig bio:"William Lustig was born on February 1, 1955 in Bronx, New York. During his teenage years, Lustig avidly watched a huge volume of lowdown and trashy exploitation fare at numerous 42nd Street grind house theaters in Manhattan and also worked as a movie theater usher in Fort Lee, New Jersey. After graduating from high school, he took a few film classes at New York University.Lustig began his film career in his mid to late teens, working behind-the-scenes in various minor production capacities on a handful of hardcore X-rated porno pictures as well as a production assistant on both "The Seven Ups" and "Death Wish." He made his debut as a director, producer and editor with the hardcore porn features "Hot Honey" and "The Violation of Claudia." Lustig directed both of these movies under the alias Billy Bagg.In 1980, Lustig found himself at the center of a storm of controversy when he made the grim, gory and disturbing slasher sleaze splatter landmark "Maniac," which boasts an incredibly intense performance by the legendary character actor Joe Spinell as a vicious depraved psychopath and plenty of hideously graphic and gruesome make-up effects by horror genre icon Tom Savini. In 1982, Lustig followed up "Maniac" with the tough, gritty and exciting New York urban revenge opus "Vigilante." In 1988, he delivered another winner with the terrific "Maniac Cop," a violent horror action flick about an undead New York police officer on a killing spree which was the first of several cinematic collaborations with fellow maverick independent filmmaker Larry Cohen.Lustig followed up with the 1989 stirring action item "Hit List" and the suspenseful serial killer thriller "Relentless" were likewise on the money excellent and entertaining offerings. However, the two "Maniac Cop" sequels were strictly hit-or-miss affairs: the second one was a worthy successor to the superior original and the third one was a regrettably mediocre entry in the series. Lustig's last film as a director to date was the nifty and enjoyable fright flick "Uncle Sam."Since 1997, William Lustig went on to initially produce retrospective DVD documentaries for Anchor Bay and now currently runs the outstanding DVD label Blue Underground which restores and re-releases popular and little seen cult movies and other grind house action, drama, and horror films."Monsters, Madness and Magic Official Website. Following 1968's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, George A. Romero directed a pair of non-horror films (THE AFFAIR and SEASON OF THE WITCH) that have either eluded or underwhelmed longtime fans who preferred the darker and gruesome later work he is most known for.  But in 1973 George Romero completed THE CRAZIES, a film steeped in chaos and fear.  THE CRAZIES tells a story of contagion in a small community, the effect it has on the townspeople as it spreads and the struggle against military forces who try to contain and eradicate the threat.  One of Romero's early "dark horse" films!  Also a discussion of the 2010 remake of TEH CRAZIES, and a remembrance of DAWN OF THE DEAD's David Emge.  Listen on your favorite podcast app.  Please Review, Share and SUBSCRIBE!

The Importance and Legacy of Something Weird Video

Something Weird Video was founded in 1990 by Mike Vraney. Based out of Seattle, it takes its name from the movie Something Weird, which was directed by “Godfather of Gore” Herschel Gordon Lewis. In addition to distributing the works of Lewis, they've also distributed films by Doris Wishman (a prolific female director of sexploitation films) and Ed Wood (specifically, The Violent Years and Jailbait), as well as movies starring famed pinup model Bettie Page. Something Weird Video specializes in exploitation B to Z movies. That Basket Case may have the highest production values of their distributed titles says something. But there is something incredibly charming about this little distribution company. If the appeal of exploitation movies is the possibility for us to see what they cannot see anywhere else, then Something Weird Video is every bit as important as Troma Entertainment, Grindhouse Releasing, Blue Underground, Vinegar Syndrome, and Unearthed Films. Their catalogue features everything from schlocky horror to softcore and hardcore pornography. They've made it their mission to preserve the sorts of films that mainstream companies wouldn't bother taking the time to preserve. This doesn't just include bizarre or shocking works, but also kids commercials, rare cartoons, and early films featuring all-Black casts. For this alone, they are a noteworthy company.

We're celebrating the birthday of one of our favorite directors, Lucio Fulci, with one of his unsung films: Beatrice Cenci. While not a horror film, this is one of the films of which Fulci himself was most proud and still has enough Fulci "flourishes" for fans of his horror movies to enjoy it. To help us with our discussion, our guest for this episode is author and film historian Troy Howarth, who provided the commentary for the 88 Films blu-ray release of Beatrice Cenci. Troy's books are available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?i=stripbooks&rh=p_27%3ATroy+Howarth&s=relevancerank&text=Troy+Howarth&ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1 and you can hear his film commentaries on numerous releases from Severin, Arrow, Blue Underground, Cauldron Films, and many other labels. William Lustig is one of the biggest names in horror. During his teenage years, Lustig avidly watched a huge volume of lowdown trashy exploitation fare at numerous 42nd Street grind house theaters in Manhattan and also worked as a movie theater usher in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In 1982, Lustig followed up "Maniac" with the tough, gritty and exciting New York urban revenge opus "Vigilante." In 1988, he delivered another winner with the terrific "Maniac Cop," a violent horror action flick about an undead New York police officer on a killing spree which was the first of several cinematic collaborations with fellow maverick independent filmmaker Larry Cohen.Lustig followed up with the 1989 stirring action item "Hit List" and the suspenseful serial killer thriller "Relentless". He cites Maniac Cop 2 as his best and most enjoyable moment in his filmmaking career and served as a fantastic follow-up to the original. In 1997, he directed his final movie with the massively overlooked 'Uncle Sam' which is a must-watch for horror and slasher fans alike.Since 1997, William went on to initially produce retrospective DVD documentaries for Anchor Bay and now currently runs the outstanding DVD label Blue Underground which restores and re-releases popular and little seen cult movies and other grind house action, drama, and horror films.During our conversation he gave many fascinating stories about his movies and career, some great advice on following your passions and also talks about horror and movies in-depth.Check out Blue Underground releases. As always make sure to leave a rating/review and follow me on the following linkhttps://linktr.ee/FirstClassHorror

We're back with our first episode of the new year, and we're covering the extremely controversial Fulci flick, The New York Ripper. Part slasher, part giallo, and 100% sleaze and grime. This is easily the most disturbing movie we've covered, so seek this one out at your own risk! On the show we do a deep dive into the several different versions of the film including the R rated Vidmark VHS cut, as well as the X rated Blue Underground restoration, which is the version we watched in preparation for this episode. While this movie has some really great style and extremely gruesome special effects, the dialog and overall tone is extremely misogynistic. That on top of the incredibly depressing ending and lack of sympathetic characters makes this the most difficult movie we've covered thus far. 3-2-1: This week on #SummerSlash2020 we are dishing on the critically panned Italian supernatural slasher horror film called Paganini Horror. What's new? Dave Franco is on deck to "go, ninja, go" in the Vanilla Ice Bio Pic.'80s cult classic, The New York Ripper by horror master Luci Fulci is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blue-ray release from Blue Underground.Scream factory is releasing a collector's edition of the horror anthology film, Tales From The Darkside: The Movie with all new commentary and a feature-length documentary.Bill and Ted Face The Music dropped spoilers during Comic Con At Home, and you can hear what they are after our credit song on this episode.Capcom is moving forward with a live-action Mega Man movie.Brad Dourif is confirmed as Chucky in the new "Chucky" series for SYFY/USA.We take a moment to pay tribute to John Saxon (deceased, actor, Enter The Dragon,The Nightmare On Elm Street, Joe Kidd, Wes Craven's New Nightmare)Questions From Out There? Answering fan questions:Dragon Ball Super has a villain problem in the new manga and our Facebook post blew up about it, Johnny explains about this rabid anime fan discussion. You guys promised a Nick Fury movie discussion, what happened? Are you following the Johnny Depp trial with Amber Heard?Favorite Batman movie and why?Our first impressions and favorite bits from Paganini Horror is delivered before we put this movie on the Binge Now - Binge Later - Binge Never rating scales during which the Bones movie with Snoop Dogg and another cursed horror film, Stay Alive is mentionedRepo Man and Repo Men are both available to watch on STARZ this week. One is about an alien in a trunk that can melt people. The other is about agents that repossess organs from people that can't pay their medical bills. Both worth a 7-day FREE trial of STARZ from us, your friends on Binge-Watchers Podcast, TRY STARZ FREE FOR 7 DAYS with this link: https://bit.ly/WATCHSTARZWhat is tonight's movie about? Paganini Horror is a 1989 Italian horror film by Luigi Cozzo (Contamination, Hercules 1983).A female rock band acquires an unpublished song by Paganini and decides to record it. They film a music video at Paganini's estate and it unleashes a vengeful spirit ready to send them all to Hell.Paganini was real. He was a composer in the 1880s. He was rumored to be such a gifted violinist that his talent must have come from a pact with the Devil. The Church wouldn't bury him for years until his family and friends filed an appeal with The Pope. Was the curse real? Is this movie cursed? Is this podcast cursed?Tonight's credit music is called Rhinestone Ransom by Brasko, but it is in theme with tonight's episode. Not the cursed part, but the rock sounds...LOL.We drop our final thoughts about the horror movie, Paganini Horror before our exciting What Else Are We Watching segment that includes another of Nicky Late's soul-sucking reality-TV entries, Upload on Amazon, and Quick Change with Bill Murray.Need to turn your headphones up? Questions From Out There:What is your favorite Terminator sequel besides 2? Which house do you belong to in GOT? Do you think airing Halloween during Halloween III’s release hurt its box office? If you made a horror movie in the style of an Italian slasher film, what is the plot?Movie News:Beavis and Butthead have a two season order at Comedy Central. There's A Petition To Block The Movie Where Paris Jackson Plays JesusWhat we know about the new Spawn. Todd McFarlane is directing a script he wrote. Spawn is not the main character and Hell comes to NYC. Chris Hemsworth is Hulk Hogan in "The Hulkster" bio pic.We are about half-way through this madness called summer slash 2020 which is a summer long horror movie marathon on the show. We invite you to watch and scream along with us.Some of these films are available on shudder, you can learn more about that on our website. anyway...Tonight we are discussing 1 film that has many titles. How many titles does this movie have? This movie has been released as Deep Red, Profondo Rosso (That’s Italian name) , The Hatchet Murders, Dripping Deep Red, The Sabre Tooth Tiger, DeepRed Hatchet Murders, Mystery of The Abandoned House, The Shivers of Angst, Red-The Color of Death, and in Japan it was billed as Suspiria 2. Of course, we are talking about Dario Argento’s Deep Red, which is his masterpiece of giallo cinema, according to the internet. Who is Argento? Italy’s Master of Thrills , and Godfather of Italian slasher cinema that spun its own subgenre of artistic horror called giallo. He also co-wrote Once Upon a Time in the West. He was a consultant on Dawn of the Dead for Romero, and released Zombi, which is the Italian remix of Dawn of the Dead. How many Argentos have worked in film? Father was a director. His brother is a producer. His two daughters are actors. Asia is probably more well known. His long time partner and Asia’s mother is in Deep Red. she was featured in several films, Daria Nicolodi.Trivia: Dario presented his father Salvatore and his brother Claudio with a 500 script to Deep Red and then cut it down to 321 odd pages. They shot in some place called Turin because the director wanted to physically occupy a place he heard was filled with satanists. He said you just need to watch a movie to know how a director was feeling when he made it.Indulge in unlimited reading like how millions already have. Read 5,000 magazines and get access to curated premium stories. Try Magzter GOLD for 7 DaysThere are also at least 4 versions of this movie and it was never released in the UK. Arrow Video did a good job trying to piece it back together, so it is uncut but one shot is still messed up in Blue Underground’s release… Most versions are trimmed down cuts of the US Hatchet Murders release which loses 22 mins of gore and sex, oh my! Apparently Halloween’s killer POV was inspired by what Argento did with the black-gloved killer’s pov shots in this movie. As well as the boiling death in Halloween 2. We’re talking the original Halloweens 1 and 2, during the Carpenter years. We pitch our giallo slasher films such as The Cheesemonger. We have a side discussion about Highlander and Batman anime.Next week: we have a fun one called Laid To Rest. It is a genre send up with a killer called Chrome Skull. Then it’s time to strap on a parachute and jump behind enemy lines with WWII science fiction/horror hybrid Overlord, before checking the Craigslist postings for apartments and finding a deal in 2015’s The Sublet.  The black snows of Russia, a recap of True Detective's third season, cancelled reboots, mysterious whales, cereal beer and more real world horrors await in the back half of the episode. ****************************************************** “Party Crowd 2” by Kolezan is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Bong Hit” by OnionEye is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Breath in and out Cigarette” by OnionEye is licensed under CC BY-NC 3.0 “Metal Loop” by thunderstorm10 is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Scream 1” by TheSubber13 is licensed under CC BY-NC 3.0 "Death Metal Track" is licensed under CC BY 3.0 ****************************************************** Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel and like us on facebook, Instagram, and on Twitter. This time out we're talking Blue Underground. Headed by filmmaker William Lustig (Maniac, Vigilante), BU has been bringing us quality releases since 2003 and we've decided to each make top five lists of what we consider to be the essential titles you'll want to own. We've got Australian weirdness, mannequin love, zombies and even some mondo! But first we talk about what we've been watching including Meryl Streep, a teen focused movie with a terrible title, Shannon Tweed, Patchwork, and much more! Thanks for listening! Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. What's the purpose? Well, co-host Phil figured that if he purchased a special edition of a cult or horror film home release with extras and remastering of the motion picture, why not give his 15 minute opinion of each film right after he watches them. Similar to the Dark Discussions Terror Tantrum segment by Patrick Lacey or the Bloody Bits podcast by Jason Lloyd of Horrorphilia, Halloween Boutique takes some of the recent releases and obscure titles and goes into the background of the movie, how is the film itself, what the presentation and remastering is, and discussion on the extras upon each disc. This second edition of the podcast includes reviews of Russ Meyer's 1965 film Motorpsycho, Mondo Macabro's release of the 1984 slasher Don't Open Til Christmas, Vinegar Syndrome's disc of the mashup 1982 film Raw Force, the 1969 Radley Metzger epic Camille 2000 (released by Cult Epics), Redemption's definitive release of Jess Franco's 1973 The Demons, and the Blue Underground disc of the Italian giallo Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye.
