Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the corn… Director Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs Evil) returns to the horror scene with Clown in a Cornfield — opening in theaters May 9 — a brutal, blood-soaked love letter to ‘80s slashers and the haunted heartland of America. Based on Adam Cesare's cult YA horror novel, this new film brings back killer clowns, generational tension, and practical gore like you haven't seen in years. Host Aaron Sagers talks to Eli about the horror DNA in the new movie, the dangers of actual cornfields vs. clowns, directing a cast of tough Gen-Z actors, and the future of the Cornfield Universe. Clown in a Cornfield hits theaters May 9. Don't miss this one. Official Synopsis: In Clown in a Cornfield, Quinn and her father have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Welcome to Kettle Springs. The real fun starts when Frendo the clown comes out to play. Directed by Eli Craig with a screenplay by Carter Blanchard and Eli Craig; based on the novel by Adam Cesare; starring Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, Carson MacCormac, Vincent Muller, Kevin Durand, and Will Sasso. _______________________________________________________________ The Talking Strange Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as experts in all things strange and unexplained. Filmmaker Eli Craig (CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD, TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL, LITTLE EVIL) joins Adam and Joe to discuss his career journey. From growing up in a Hollywood family and wanting to get as far away from Los Angeles and the film industry as possible… to his adventures climbing mountains and shoveling snow… to making the brief decision to try out life as an actor and the advice Clint Eastwood gave him on set… to going to USC grad school and creating his own film festival to showcase his short film… to the uphill battle he faced getting his 2010 horror/comedy TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL made and why there has yet to be a sequel to the beloved film… to the reality check every filmmaker faces coming off of a run of glowing film festival responses and into the world of “mainstream” critics and distributors who simply can't afford a proper marketing strategy… to how Adam Cesare's “Clown in a Cornfield” novel first came onto his radar and how the looming WGA strike almost derailed the project… to how shooting the film in Canada afforded him the luxury of casting exactly who he wanted to cast and elevate stars like Katie Douglas to #1in the cast… Eli is a fellow cinematic traveler who's story is sure to inspire you! Eli Craig smashed onto the slasher scene with his genre-defying comedy event Tucker & Dale VS Evil, and he's back with another slasher that upends expectations: Clown in a Cornfield.Clown in a Cornfield is based on the first entry in Adam Cesare's Frendo series which chucks a group of teens into the mayhem of a Midwestern American town where they find themselves picked off by a growing group of killer clowns. Eli Craig then takes that terror from the page and supplants it brilliantly with a satirical and savvy stance, making one of the most enjoyably subversive horror flicks of the year so far. It's also one of the most timely too, as it's a horror film about the flyover states of America, yet it's shot in Canada. That added layer of political devilishness is one of the things that I ask Eli about in the following interview. This chat is an open one from Eli, with the horror director talking about the journey of Tucker & Dale VS Evil from being an unseen flick to a cult classic which has fans demanding a sequel. Eli also talks about the journey of adapting Adam's books for the screen, before making a statement for horror film fans around the world, myself included: If you want more Clown in the Cornfield films, then go and see the first one in cinemas. And for Aussie audiences, you'll be able to do that very soon.Clown in a Cornfield makes its Australian premiere at Fantastic Film Festival Australia on 26 April at the Lido in Hawthorn and the Ritz Randwick. Send us a Text Message.Send in the clowns. Tell them not to forget their crossbows and chainsaws. This week our guest is Adam Cesare, who's Clown in a Cornfield trilogy reaches a climax (I won't say end) in Book 3: The Church of Frendo. I read all three books in one mad rush and they confounded all of my horror-savvy, slasher-weary expectations. These books are a State of the Nation story for the ages – think George Orwell's Animal Farm, but with fascist clowns rather than Bolshevik swine. Adam and I have one of those very Talking Scared conversations. We get into the political and the personal, touching on his time as a teacher, the challenge of empathy, the role of guns in fiction and the rural/urban divide in America. But also… clowns! In the Dark Horse Comics title Dead Mall, available now as a trade paperback, five teens explore an abandoned shopping mall, only to discover that not only is the mall not empty, it's driven by an evil force, and populated by strange creatures — and everything seems quite hungry. Written by Adam Cesare with art by David Stoll, Dead Mall is a supernatural cosmic horror and fresh entry to the mall horror subgenre that calls to mind The Shining, Hellraiser, and the works of Lovecraft. Cesare and Stoll join host Aaron Sagers to talk about what makes malls scary, the new kind of haunted houses in America, and the urban legends/Internet folklore of modern Americana. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales.
