Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of Hollywood's biggest bombs. This month, Not A Bomb is examining some of 2023's biggest box office failures and critically lambasted films! Once again, Brad's shenanigans are back and he's breaking all the rules. On this week's episode, the guys welcome back Jose from Watch/Skip+ to discuss the very divisive film from 2022 that didn't get a wide release until 2023, Babylon. This three hour epic is an ode to Hollywood during the transition from silent films to talkies (imagine Singing in the Rain but much darker in tone). Notable for its All-Star cast, Babylon failed to make an impact at the box-office and divided most critics. Does Babylon's 3-hour runtime deserve your attention? Is it too obnoxious, trangressive, and pretensious for the average film fan? Or maybe this is a visually majestic tragedy that will soon become a cult classic? Download and listen!Babylon is directed by Damein Chazelle and stars Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, P.J. Bryne, Lukas Haas, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Katherine Waterston, and Tobey Maguire. As the year comes to an end, Not A Bomb wants to know your best/worst films of 2023. Head over to Not A Bomb and submit your choice! Also, longtime friend of Troy and Brad, Michael Neel, released his movie - Infinite Santa 8000 via Synapse Films. Even the creepiest holiday of the year needs an adorable moment....On this episode we get to dial it back for a slice of underrated Halloween fun that audiences really haven't seen since 2004 and has built up a cult following of it's own finally finding it's way back to the universe now on Blu-Ray for the very first time.  Get ready for 'Satan's Little Helper'.Nine Year Old Douglas Whooly is obsessed with the handheld video game "Satan's Little Helper" and annoyed that the attention of his big sister Jenna (Katheryn Winnick) whose just returned home from college is more on her new boyfriend Alex then him.  These two concerns collide on Halloween, when Douglas witnesses a serial killer in a devil mask posing his victims like outdoor Halloween displays.  Now understanding how this is some real carnage going on in this small town, Douglas gladly becomes this Satan's Little Helper; and that not only bad news for Douglas, but for Alex and for Jenna's mom Merill (Amanda Plummer) because now the whole town is in danger from this mad man on the one evening a year we let all inhibitions and logic fly out the window,Ultimately a different breed of Halloween film, Satan's Little Helper is appropriately grizzly in all the right spots but it has a sinister sense of humor that gets wrapped up in some genuinely human moments with some amazing performance from top to bottom. Now out on Blu-Ray from our friends at Synapse Films, we had the unique pleasure of sitting down with the one and only writer/director Jeff Lieberman to talk about the origins of the film, the caliber of the ensemble it's distinct sense of humor that isn't subservient to the BS of life and so very much more.....

Believe it or not, I've been doing these reviews for over a year at this point and it's been lovely watching how much it's all grown. This originally started with me desperately wanting to review the Criterion Collection's The Complete Films of Agnès Varda boxset and it has grown into something I couldn't imagine. Over the past 12 months, this has gone from just the lovely folks over at Kino Lorber and the Criterion Collection to also working with other lovely folks over at Arrow Video, Fun City Editions, GKIDS, Code Red, MVD Entertainment, Synapse Films, and Cohen Film Collection to help bring awareness to the wide world of well-curated and pristinely-packed cinema you could experience from the comfort and safety of your home with no more than a TV and a Blu-ray player (no internet required). This started as a way to keep people engaged with repertory and arthouse titles while theaters were closed and tech companies continued to gobble up the scope of cinema, but it's now evolved into blog discovery and being intentional and passionate about cinema I consume. It's been great hearing all the feedback over the past 12 months and getting to hear from people who found this column by chance. I love doing it and I hope you guys still like listening to and reading it. So what better way to celebrate a one-year anniversary than with the addition of two new distributors! From the UK but bearing “All Region” gifts comes Imprint Films with its releases of Basil Dearden's penultimate film, The Assassination Bureau starring late greats Oliver Reed, Telly Savalas, and of course Diana Rigg, a romp about assassins who clearly don't understand there are more efficient ways to kill a person than bombs (more on that later). They also have released a handsome boxset containing both the 1951 Anthony Asquith/Michael Redgrave and 1994 Mike Figgis/Albert Finney adaptations of Terrence Rattigan's The Browning Version. Also making their debut is the long-awaited and oft-asked-for Vinegar Syndrome! We're starting off with their exclusive release of the very exciting reconstruction of the nearly lost and soon-to-be-cult-favorite New York Ninja. We also have our usual suspects with Kino Lorber giving us releases of director John G. Avildsen and composer Bill Conti's unlikely but welcome follow-up to Rocky, Slow Dancing in the Big City starring unlikely romantic lead Paul Sorvino. John Huston's Freud biopic starring Montgomery Clift and Susannah York makes a welcome appearance, which prompts me to once again think about what makes a biopic work artistically in the first place. There is also the season 1 release of Rod Serling's horror-tinged Twilight Zone follow-up Night Gallery. Arrow Video brings us two welcome releases for cinephiles who have their sights set on lesser-known Japanese genre cinema: Gamera director Noriaki Yuasa's adaptation of Kazuo Umezu's manga “Hebi shōjo (Snake Girl)” into a horror film aimed to traumatize children everywhere, The Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch, and there's also the genre-bending mash-up that is Shinji Somai's Sailor Suit and Machine Gun, which somehow threads the needle between quiet coming-of-age drama, yakuza movie, and Japanese “idol movie.” Finally, we have my pick of the month from Fun City Editions with their recent release of Christopher Petit's New German cinema-inspired and new wave-scored British road movie Radio On, a gem I hope won't remain hidden for long. After a year of doing this, I hope some of you have found something you've enjoyed that you would have otherwise missed or overlooked, and if you haven't yet, I hope this month can change that. You can read the rest of the written reviews on the IU Cinema Blog, here: https://blogs.iu.edu/aplaceforfilm/

Full transparency: all Blu-rays reviewed were provided by Kino Lorber, Arrow Video, and Synapse Films. Finally, the best month of the year is here: OCTOBER! The one I've been waiting for, folks. There's nothing quite like the thrills and chills of a month marinated in the macabre. As the days dwindle and the nights grow longer, it's nice to sit down with a spooky story or two to keep you company and to keep you and your loved ones on your toes. Who knows what creeps around every conspicuous corner? Horror movies are always a fun and communal way to let the hairs stand up on your neck and get your pulse pounding and your stomach churning without having to go out and find a masked killer to get the job done. So that is why I bring you some of the wildest, weirdest, and most weighty selections this column has seen to date. Joining us this month is Synapse Films with their reissue of Lamberto Bava and giallo giant Dario Argento's nightmare-inducing (and nightmare-logic-infused) horror duology Demons and Demons 2. Arrow Video comes in swingin' with a substantial piece of film history and a fresh collection for non-weeby western eyes: the Yokai Monsters Collection, featuring the entire trilogy of the influential yokai monster movies produced by Daiei, the studio behind Gamera, as well as exhaustingly prolific auteur Takashi Miike's 2005 yokai free-for-all, The Great Yokai War, which begs the question "What if there was a great yokai war?" The final addition to my reviews this month -- as well as my pick of the month -- comes from Kino Lorber, but not in the form of a film. No, ma'am. We are treading into the uncharted territory of TV and TV movies with, if not the granddaddy of “monster of the week” television shows then certainly the cool uncle of them, Kolchak: The Night Stalker. For such a momentous occasion I decided to bring back past guest, Lotus operations & visual arts manager, radio DJ, and The X-Files aficionado Amanda Hutchins to talk about the sizable impact this show has had on TV and film as a whole, its never-ending delightfulness, its fascinating pedigree, and how it embodies the more “fun” side of the Halloween season. Take a listen... if you dare. You can find the rest of the months reviews in written form on the IU Cinema blog

As we also celebrate VE Day and 86 years since the end of WW2, we look at all things Nazi on the big screen (and almost manage to avoid doing silly German accents), for our weekly film theme. We look at documentaries by and about Nazi's, including Leni Riefenstahl's notorious Triumph of the Will / Triumph des Willens (1935) and why the father of the founder of Synapse Films that we licensed it from, who was himself a Holocaust survivor, deemed it important to release the film, saying, "Jerry, you MUST release the film, lest we forget." To balance it we also stream the Nazi Concentration Camps (1945) documentary shown at the Nurnberg War Crimes Trials and discuss Alfred Hitchcock and Billy Wilder's involvement in concentration camp documentaries. We then look at US exploitation films made during the war, including Bela Lugosi's Black Dragons (1942), which pre-dates The Manchurian Candidate in its plot; Hitler - Dead or Alive (1942), where a gang of ex-bounty hunters go to Germany to catch Hitler, for one million dollars; and Enemy of Women (1944), which charts the fall and rise of Joseph Goebbels, a weakling harassing women, who went from failed play writer to Propaganda Minister of the Third Reich. This is followed by the first of the so-called Nazisploitations films that proliferated in the 1970s and 80s. Love Camp 7 (1969), in which two American Lieutenants with photographic memories and big breasts, volunteer to infiltrate Love Camp 7, a women's POW camp in Nazi Germany.  We chart how this led to the rise of the Nazisploitation genre in USA and Italy and films such as Ilsa She Wolf of the SS and its many sequels. Finally, there is the bastar offspring of the Nazisploitation that take things to a whole new ridiculous level with Black Gestapo (1975), a crazed blaxplo-nazisploitation film that seeks to equate the Black Panther movement with the Nazis. There is also SS Operation Wolfcub (1983), a legendary US porn star (Harry Reams) in an erotic director's film (Joe Sarno), with no sex! What were they thinking? Slap 'Nazi' or 'SS' on anything to make it instantly appealing as showcasing the ultimate of evils. To end on a high note we conclude with Schichlegruber - Doing the Lambeth Walk, a 1942 two-minute propaganda film by Charles A. Ridley of the UK Ministry of Information. It remixes Triumph of the Will to a song the Nazis hated and went viral during the war. Watch the "Gestapo Hep-Cats" goose-stepping in the style of Ministry of Silly Walks and Hitler made to look ridiculous. See the full video here:  Lambeth Walk: Nazi Style - by Charles A. Ridley (1941)

This week we dive into our movie collection, described as "your dream video store from 1982", to discover the types of films that are playing on Cultpix. Particularly those from our friends and partners at Something Weird Video, Synapse Films, AGFA - American Genre Film Archive, Penny Video and many more. We select favourite films and play lots of clips. Think of it as a personal guide by the video store owners as to what is cool - and with penalty fee for returning it late or forgetting to rewind (we do that for you). Films like Brand of Shame, Alice in Acidland, Dark Waters, Bloodsucker From Outer Space and many more.  In other good news we are close to resolving several technical issues, including why Smut Peddler was sounding so bad in the last episode. Turns out it helps if you have the right microphone selected. We also discuss Bela Lugosi's Monogram 9 and why Voodoo Man is our mutual favourite.

We're embarking on a bit of a side quest in this episode, since this is a film that was not directed by George Romero, but was instead created by another group of Pittsburgh-based filmmakers who'd honed their skills on the sets of Romero films. Many of those involved in the making of EFFECTS would go on to be frequent collaborators with Romero over the years, including editor Pasquale Buba and composter/actor John Harrison. And, of course, there's the makeup effects wiz and co-star of EFFECTS, the venerable Tom Savini. EFFECTS has an interesting story behind it, having been essentially lost (and the stuff of legend in horror circles) for nearly half a century. But thanks to the folks at Synapse Films and AGFA, it's now readily available to view for a whole new generation of genre fans, and we were excited to finally see it and to dive into its creation.   Theme Song: "There's Still a Little Bit of Time, If We Hurry and I Mean Hurry" by Slasher Film Festival Strategy. “The sleepy little town of Mill Basin is about to get more than it bargained for. The satanic heavy metal rock band “Black Roses” is coming through to raise hell… literally! After making a deal with the Devil himself, the band’s music demonically possesses the kids in the audience, turning them into blood-thirsty demons. The blood flows as they start killing their parents and causing chaos at their local high school. Culminating in a fiery battle between man and ultimate evil, BLACK ROSES is considered a “MUST HAVE metal horror movie from the 80’s” (IMDB.COM).From the director of ROCK ‘N’ ROLL NIGHTMARE comes the next heavy-metal horror classic re-mastered in high definition. BLACK ROSES features an early film role for Vincent (THE SOPRANOS) Pastore and classic rock fans will love seeing Carmine Appice (of VANILLA FUDGE) on-screen as one of the demonic “Black Roses” band members! Ask any die hard cinephile what one of the most disputed horror film restorations is and Argento’s Suspiria will rear its ugly head. One of the most celebrated horror films of all time, Argento’s classic of murder and dark forces has often been at the center of controversy when in regards to sound, color and accuracy. We decided to catch up with Synapse Films’ Don May to discuss the 4 year labor of love surrounding the soon to be released 4K restoration and he had plenty to say in regards to his efforts and what the film means to its fans. The Exorcist with Synapse Films’ Don May Jr. For our latest ep, Jinx welcomes Don May Jr. to the show.  A producer who owns and operates Synapse Films (the Blu-ray and DVD label responsible for releasing such titles as Thriller - A Cruel Picture, Vampyros Lesbos, Demons and Demons 2, Popcorn, Tenebrae, Phenomena, and the upcoming 40th Anniversary release of Suspiria), Mr. May has chosen to discuss William Friedkin’s 1973 film adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist. An undisputed horror classic, The Exorcist is actually the first film to make a return appearance on Scream Addicts (it was previously chosen by filmmaker Tom McLoughlin - listen here.  During their discussion, Mr. May and Jinx touch on the first times they viewed the film, the power the film still holds, and their feelings on the film’s follow-ups.  Along the way, they weigh the theatrical cut against “The Version You’ve Never Seen”, why The Exorcist is a bucket list release project for Mr. May and the part of the film that never should’ve received the Terminator 2 “morph” treatment. It’s a wonderful and lengthy conversation with an excellent guest, and it’s one we hope you enjoy! Visit Synapse Films here. Make certain to scream at us on Twitter! @ScreamAddicts @Jinx1981

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Presented by Dark Discussions Podcast is the new monthly Halloween Boutique: A Psychotronic Review podcast where co-host Phil reviews his various special edition blu-rays and DVD's from boutique companies such as Mondo Macabro, Severin Films, Synapse Films, Redemption Video, Code Red, Arrow Video, and all the rest. What's the purpose? Well, co-host Phil figured that if he purchased a special edition of a cult or horror film home release with extras and remastering of the motion picture, why not give his 15 minute opinion of each film right after he watches them. Similar to the Dark Discussions Terror Tantrum segment by Patrick Lacey or the Bloody Bits podcast by Jason Lloyd of Horrorphilia, Halloween Boutique takes some of the recent releases and obscure titles and goes into the background of the movie, how is the film itself, what the presentation and remastering is, and discussion on the extras upon each disc. This second edition of the podcast includes reviews of Russ Meyer's 1965 film Motorpsycho, Mondo Macabro's release of the 1984 slasher Don't Open Til Christmas, Vinegar Syndrome's disc of the mashup 1982 film Raw Force, the 1969 Radley Metzger epic Camille 2000 (released by Cult Epics), Redemption's definitive release of Jess Franco's 1973 The Demons, and the Blue Underground disc of the Italian giallo Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye. Tenebrae is a highly renowned giallo film, recently released on a single-disc Blu-Ray by Synapse Films. Dario Argento's direction is fantastic in this whodunnit about a novelist targeted by a sadistic killer using his latest novel as inspiration, and many themes are prominent throughout this slow burn that uses death as an art form. We talk about giallo in general first, then dive into Tenebrae itself - its metacommentary, its ideas about human corruption and depravity, and of course the non-Goblin soundtrack.
