Jonathan Janz is the pen name of Craig Shaeffer, an American horror author of 16 novels and one collection of short fiction. In 2011, Janz published his debut novel, The Sorrows. The book received praise from author Brian Keene, who called it "the best horror novel of 2012." Keene would also describe Janz as "One of the best writers in modern horror to come along in the last decade." In March of 2023, Janz won the Wilburn-Thomas Award at the Scares That Care event in Williamsburg, VA. This is a charity event organized by author Brian Keene and the award is given to authors who have helped other writers and their community. When he's not Jonthan Janz: Horror Author, he's Mr. Shaeffer, a high school English, film literature, and creative writing teacher in Indiana. He currently resides in Indiana with his wife and three children. You won't want to miss how his students finally learned that mild-mannered Mr. Shaeffer was also famous writer Jonthan Janz.

What's changed? Everything. Brian Keene says the thing that's changed the most in the years since he sold his first story in 1997 is the rise of the indie press. “The Big Five weren't publishing horror novels in the mid 90s so you saw the indie press grow and blossom.”And now, maintains the wildly successful author of over fifty books, the gap between the Big Five and indie presses hasn't just narrowed, it's disappeared.Keene writes novels, comic books, short stories, and nonfiction, mostly in the horror, crime, and fantasy genres. They have been translated into over a dozen different languages and have won numerous awards. He's mentor to four promising young authors, including Stephen Kozeniewski, the author of the excellent and terrifying Skinwrapper. He has also written for such media properties as Doctor Who, Thor, Aliens, Harley Quinn, The X-Files, Doom Patrol, Justice League, Hellboy, Superman, and Masters of the Universe. From 2015 to 2020, he hosted the immensely popular The Horror Show with Brian Keene podcast. He also hosted (along with Christopher Golden) the long-running Defenders Dialogue podcast.Several of Keene's novels and stories have been adapted for film, including Ghoul, The Naughty List, The Ties That Bind, and Fast Zombies Suck. Several more are in-development. Keene also served as Executive Producer for the feature length film I'm Dreaming of a White Doomsday.Keene's work has been praised by The New York Times, The History Channel, The Howard Stern Show, CNN, The Huffington Post, Bleeding Cool, Publisher's Weekly, Fangoria, Bloody Disgusting, and Rue Morgue.Keene also serves on the Board of Directors for the Scares That Care 501c charity organization. He's starting his own IP studio. And if you're looking for one of the greatest Jack Ketchum stories you'll ever hear, it's at about the :31 min mark.
I'm on the road this week with the lovely Scarlett and my best boy Boney heading to Monster Mania 50 in Cherry Hill NJ. We recap our last two convention adventures, and the Corey Hotline is heating up! Call in anytime 24/7 to the Corey Hotline and leave a message for the show at 832-930-1347
We're swimming in shark-infested waters this week as we review The Reef: Stalked with Chad Lutzke. We're also talking our trip to Scares That Care, The Reef, The Beta Test, Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster, Fantasy Island, Pieces, and The Neighbor.
On the heels of the controversial TROMA'S WAR, Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz returned to what brought em to the dance with THE TOXIC AVENGER, PART II. The film follows the titular monster hero of superhuman size and strength from the streets of Tromaville to the shores of Tokyo, where he arrives Godzilla style! Accidentally shot as a four-hour film, then split into two (with the later TOXIC AVENGER, PART III: THE LAST TEMPTATION OF TOXIE), the second entry of this ooey, gooey franchise struggles to live up to the triumphs of the original, but there are reasons for this. We dive in head-first. Plus, Lucas met Lloyd Kaufman, Wesley Southard's newest book, and getting ready for Scares That Care.
Anthony T is ready for vacation but first he's back with casting news for Scream 6, Terrifier 2 finding distribution, and the ongoing Vince McMahon saga. Then his definition of episodic television is way different than the Duffer Brothers as talks about season 4 of "Stranger Things" as he thinks nine episodes shouldn't be nine movies, Philip Perron from Dark Discussions Podcast stops by as the both of them preview the upcoming Scares That Care Weekend 8 taking place July 29th - 31st in Williamsburg, Virginia. And in What's Anthony T Watching, he's going to summer camp. A Bloody Summer Camp to be exact.
This week I was vending at the first ever Scares That Care Author Con and I had a blast! Check out the adventures we had on this episode!
NOW AVAILABLE ON FOWL PLAYERS RADIO!!! www.fowlplayersradio.comhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/175423/10293339As a child, I had fond memories of getting out of Nursery School and Kindergarten and heading home to play and watch television with my friends. One of the shows we would love to watch was on Washington DC's "WDCA 20", "Captain 20" starring Dick Dyszel. He would have hamster races, chimp races, and show cartoons and shows that we loved, such as "Bugs Bunny", "Ultra Man", "Johnny Sokko's Flying Robot", "Marine Boy", "Speed Racer", "Kimba The White Lion", and so many more. Not only does Dick tell us about his time as Captain 20, but he was also "Bozo The Clown" and still appears as horror host "Count Gore De Vol". He has fascinating stories about his career which spans several decades and some of the folks (and chimps) he has worked with. This was a fun episode to put together, and I think you'll have fun listening. My fellow Fowl Player Alfred Guy co-hosted with me, and they talked about some of the charity work they do with "Scares That Care".www.dickdyszel.comwww.scaresthatcare.orgDick Dyszel on IMDb:https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0246055/The Fowl Players of Perryville are now booking shows for 2022! Welcome back loyal listeners! As we continue on this new chapter of We Belong Dead, we've decided to dust off some special episodes for the newer listeners who may have missed them the first time around. This time, we pulled from the vault a very special episode: our interview with David Kessler himself, Mr. David Naughton! We had the chance to sit down with him at a Scares That Care weekend convention years ago, and it was a real treat. David was incredibly gracious and open as we spoke on several of our favorite films of his, as well as some more recent projects that he was working on at the time. Enjoy! Have any questions or comments for us? Send us a message to our social media pages or email us directly at webelongdeadpod@gmail.com. Good evening loyal listeners! As we start this new chapter in We Belong Dead, we've decided to dust off a definite highlight from the archives. Back at the 2019 Scares That Care convention, we had the absolute privilege and honor to interview the legend himself. Joe Bob "muthafuckin" Briggs! To say it was surreal as hell and a dream come true would be the greatest of understatements. And lest we forget, we have the always lovely Darcy the Mailgirl to thank for it. So just relax, and let the warm tones of Joe Bob wash over you. Enjoy!
On this week's episode, we talk about horror conventions and don't even slash the surface. There's so much that goes into putting them on, and attending them. It's definitely a scary good time. We also talk about an upcoming event that we'll be taking part in with our business, Ugly Mugs Inc. Those things and more await you. Join us! Anthony T is back with a lot of interesting genre news, and then afterwards he has two big interviews on this episode. First, he’s not happy with “Scream 5” having its title changed, to you guessed it, “Scream.” Pun most certainly intended but Anthony is screaming WTF. Then, for the first interview of the show, Anthony brings back Todd Staruch to the podcast to discuss the upcoming 6th Annual Toy Drive and Scares that Care Fundraiser on the Horror Nerd’s YouTube channel on December 4th. Afterwards he chats with the founder and president of Fright-Rags Ben Scrivens about his company and all the great memorabilia and items he sells on his site.
The Fellowship is pleased to present our discussion of the 1940 film The Mark of Zorro. This is a classic swashbuckler based on a (mostly) original American story with some interesting backstory. We discuss early action films, a little bit of Hollywood history, a little bit of the development of the sword itself, some compare and contrast with another great film, and a bunch of stuff in between. Plus our usual tangents galore and our comics picks of the week. Announcements: We found a way to do our monthly meetups - on Discord! So you’ve written the greatest book, the cover looks great, the editing is top-notch, and you’ve posted it to Amazon, drafted 2 digital, or wherever. Now what? Rest on your laurels and let that sweet, sweet, author cash flow in, right? Well, no.The convention circuit is something that you can do which puts you into direct contact with your readers. I would highly encourage every author who is looking for a way to meet individual readers in the real world to consider this route.https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BryantheWriterI can highly recommend attending Scares That Care. Every year we have an amazing group of people gathered to talk about scary stuff and we raise a bunch of money for an amazing cause. Check them out here! https://scaresthatcare.org/Recently I finished reading a book entitled “The Golden Toilet; Stop Flushing Your Marketing Budget into Your Website and Build a System That Grows Your Business” by Steve Brown. This a marketing book. I usually don’t review non-fiction books, but here goes.Well written, and delightfully unapologetic in word choice, I found a real connection with the way the information is laid out.The thing I really appreciate is that Steve is not just telling you to buy his product. As a matter of fact, he actually talks about resources and ways of doing things which are not only free, but also findable in your local library. He is truly sticking to the old adage that you should only sell 20% of the time and then use the rest of your time to provide something useful. Which strongly suggests to me he is the real deal and not some guy who only talks about something rather than actually applying it.The book also offers plenty of other free resources from his website which will help you put into practice what he is talking about in the book and that is something I can totally get on board with.I really enjoyed reading the Golden Toilet and I really hope you will too. Find it here. https://www.roionline.com/ or https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Toilet-Flushing-Marketing-Business-ebook/dp/B082VKW99Y Check it out. It may not completely fit your situation, but take what you can from it and you can adapt it to make it your own.Safe to say that I highly recommend this book. Quick read and well worth the time. But that is not just enough for All Things Writing, ladies and gents. Nope, I want to take this book review one step farther. I want to get Steve on next week’s show! Yep, Next Saturday, check out the show to hear me interview Mr. Steve Brown of ROI. I am going to press him on marketing for the indie author. Actually, just based on my interactions with him and reading his book, I suspect it should be a fun interview and I am really looking forward to it.So that’s it for this week on all things writing. Thank you for joining me, this is Bryan the writer signing off.https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BryantheWriter Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! In a bonus episode for #AllTheHorror, we discuss 2019, look forward to 2020, and then focus on the zombie genre before enjoying a few more categories inspired by Joker, Annabelle, & Midsommar. All Our Horror Goodies - Top of Show Episode Format - 2:17 CONTEMPORARY HORROR AWARDS - 4:48 (Most Anticipated Upcoming Horror Movie; Top 3 Most Anticipated 2020 Horror Movies; Best Horror Movie of 2019 Thus Far; Horror Movie Most Ashamed of Missing; 2019 Kids Movie That Works Better As a Horror Movie; Best 2019 Oscar Contender That Should Turn Into a Zombie Movie) ALL ZOMBIE MOVIE AWARDS - 23:30 (Funniest Zombie Movie; Best Zombie Movie of the Past 10 Years; Zombie Movie Character Who Deserves a TWD Surprise Death; Oscar Movie Character You Most Want to See Zombies Get; Best Romero Zombie Movie; Best New Zombie Series; Best Acting Career Since Starring in a Recent Zombie Movie; Best International Zombie Film; Best Fast Zombie Movie; Zombie Movie You Think You Could Actually Survive; Best Zombie Movie Ever) DOMESTIC MONSTER/SERIAL KILLER AWARDS - 50:45 (Best Acting Performance in a Domestic Monster Movie; Bad Guy You’re the Most Dead Against; Killer You’re Most Confident in Evading; Who Wins a Killer Battle Royale) MONSTERS OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS - 1:00:53 (Most Believable Unbelievable Possession Story; Which Possession Could You Ignore Longest; Which Haunting Movie Kills You Quickest; Oscar Winner Was Most Likely Actually Possessed) Your Homework/PLEASE LEAVE US 5*’S - 1:11:06 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 1:12:17 One of the most fun things we do here at MMO is create our own award shows. They’re fun to prepare, they’re fun to record, and whether we’re completing a re-watch series or celebrating a season, Mike & I jump at the chance to do episodes like The Scaries. So if you enjoyed this one, do scroll down a few moments on our Soundcloud playlists tab to find all 12 episodes in our “MMO-Made Award Shows.” In another fun twist of fate, we were invited to include this as a bonus episode of #AllTheHorror. Do make sure to follow @AllTheHorror18 on Twitter, join the facebook group, visit the website, and consume all of the great content. Daily podcasts, a bevvy of written content, and some terrific artwork highlight these 31 days of horror content in this month long celebration. You can buy some awesome tee shirts with 100% of the proceeds headed to the Scares That Care charity, and you can find our 4 contributions to the annual ATH events in our podcast playlist entitled “#AllTheHorror: Everything MMO Horror Related.” This year’s featured episode was a clip show where our friends told us how they would spend the zombie apocalypse, in honor of Zombieland: Double Tap. So of course, the centerpiece of our 2nd Annual Scaries is all about zombies. Listen to find out all our winners of 13 categories including Funniest Zombie Movie, Best Remake, Best International Z-Film, all the way to which Oscar character we’d most like to see be ripped apart by the undead. As promised, we also dabble in two more sub-genres. Last year at the first Scaries, we focused on Slashers with additional categories on Creature Features, Horror Comedies, and Hauntings. This year, we did a few awards on Serial Killer films in honor of Joker & finished the show with a few more categories on Possession / Exorcism / Hauntings of Biblical Proportions. Finally, and like we encouraged on the show, do send us your picks & rationale for any of these categories. We’ll gladly read them on an upcoming MMO Weekly broadcast. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you listen to podcasts. When reality sucks, keep watching movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, & Oscar!

This week on the show, Jeff (@Jeff_FOTD) and Jesse (@DestroySuperman) take a break from our unofficial "Bargain Bin Madness" series to review the summer's biggest Sci-Fi/Action blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy! First, the guys surprise James (@DrJimmyTerror) by podcast-bombing him via Skype. You'll get the lowdown on why he isn't on the show this week, along with some stories about male strippers and his Blood Bucket Challenge for Scares That Care. Next, Jesse takes a few minutes to talk about the newest Nic Cage movie (surprised?), Rage, and Jeff sticks up for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie by laying out the reasons why it's actually not as bad as the Internet might have you believe... No childhoods were raped during this discussion. Then, it's on to a full review about Guardians of the Galaxy. Jesse and Jeff tell you why you should see it, give their full reactions, and discuss how excited they are for James Gunn (and how much of a boner Jesse has for Bradley Cooper).
