We talked about the Detroit Lions in their pursuit of their first Super Bowl but they have a ton of injuries right now. Their OC, Ben Johnson, is probably getting a head coaching job next season so they need to win this year. They have a lot of injuries on the defensive side so they need to score a lot of points to win. A lot of the top teams have bad defenses like the Lions, Bills and Ravens. Boomer said the Chiefs defense and the Texans are solid. The most balanced teams are the Eagles, Vikings and Chiefs. Gio thinks it would be wild for Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones to get a Super Bowl ring this year with the Vikings. Jerry returns for an update and starts with clips of the Aaron Rodgers documentary which is available on Netflix today. He talked about tapping into his feminine side. The Vikings beat the Bears and the Falcons beat the Raiders and Kirk Cousins finally threw a TD pass. Mike Tomlin gave an update on TJ Watt. Adam Schein was gloating about Josh Allen's season. Bill Belichick was on with Pat McAfee talking about his new job at UNC. In the final segment of the hour, we will be going to our ‘man dinner' tonight in Jersey City. We are going to take the ferry to JC.

Live as a Light in Darkness (vv. 11-15) Infiltrate but do not imitate Illuminate but do not alienate Cooperate but do not deviate Live in Liberty Under Direction (v. 16) Freedom in the world Freedom from the world Live by Love Amidst Desperation (v. 17) Considerate love to the unsaved Sacrificial love to the saved Reverential love to Savior Respectful love to the sovereigns More to Consider Years ago, the communist government in China commissioned an author to write a biography of Hudson Taylor with the purpose of distorting the facts and presenting him in a bad light. They wanted to discredit the name of this consecrated missionary of the gospel. As the author was doing his research, he was increasingly impressed by Taylor's saintly character and godly life, and he found it extremely difficult to carry out his assigned task with a clear conscience. Eventually, at the risk of losing his life, he laid aside his pen, renounced his atheism, and received Jesus as his personal Savior. Whether we realize it or not, our example leaves an impression on others. Sign in an executive's office: "What I am about to say represents one four-billionth of the world's opinion." Jack Williams, Phoenix Gazette. Dr. John Geddie went to Aneityum in 1848 and worked there for God for 24 years. On the tablet erected to his memory these words are inscribed: When he landed, in 1848, there were no Christians. When he left, in 1872, there were no heathen. J.O. Sanders, Spiritual Leadership, p. 24. An elderly gentleman was sitting on a park bench, basking in the sun, when another elderly fellow sat down. They looked at each other for a moment but did not speak. Both men sat there, staring straight ahead. After a while, one of them heaved a big, heartfelt sigh. The other jumped up immediately and said, "If you're going to talk politics, I'm leaving." Bits Pieces, June 24, 1993, p. 7. The penalty that good men pay for not being interested in politics is to be governed by men worse than themselves. Plato.

The Spirit of the Law Part 1: The Heart of Murder Matthew 5:21-26 Cultivating a Murderous Attitude (vv. 21-22) You have heard it said but I say to you Confronting a Murderous Attitude (vv. 23-24a) Confrontation in worship Conviction in worship Consistency in worship Correcting a Murderous Attitude (vv. 24b-26) First reconcile Then worship Find liberty More to Consider The scribes and Pharisees were evidently seeking to restrict the application of the sixth commandment to the deed of murder alone, to the act of spilling human blood in homicide. If they refrained from this, they considered that they had kept the commandment. And this apparently is what the rabbis taught the people. But Jesus disagreed with them. The true application of the prohibition was much wider, he maintained. It included thoughts and words as well as deeds, anger and insult as well as murder. John Stott Hate is like acid. It can damage the vessel in which it is stored as well as destroy the object on which it is poured. Ann Landers, Bits Pieces, September 17, 1992, p. 3. A man who hates to be slapped on the back packs his coat with TNT and waits for this man who always slaps his back. His idea is when he hits me, I will get him, I'll blow him up. Hate kills both the person who you hate, but also yourself as well. Hating people is like burning down your own house to get rid of a rat. H.E. Fosdick A lady once came to Billy Sunday and tried to rationalize her angry outbursts. "There's nothing wrong with losing my temper," she said. "I blow up, and then it's all over." "So does a shotgun," Sunday replied, "and look at the damage it leaves behind!" Billy Sunday.

New Year, Your Choice Part 3: Simple Priorities 1 Peter 4:7-11 Be Intentionally Prayerful (v. 7) Sober Minded, Open Eyed Be Fervently Loving (v.8-10) Caring, Hospitable, Generous Be Ministerially Active (v.11) Speaking the Word, Serving the world More to Consider Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important. Stephen R. Covey A group of friends went deer hunting and paired off in twos for the day. That night one of the hunters returned alone, staggering under an eight-point buck. "Where's Harry?" he was asked. "Harry had a stroke of some kind. He's a couple of miles back up the trail." "You left Harry laying there, and carried the deer back?" "Well," said the hunter, "I figured no one was going to steal Harry." Bits Pieces, March 3, 1994, p. 5. In recent years a head coach divorced his wife of 26 years when he left coaching a college team to become head coach in the National Football League. He said he needed a wife while coaching on the college level for social functions and to show families that he would be looking out for their sons. In pro football, however, she was an unnecessary accouterment and a distraction to winning. He said winning football was his number one priority and his two sons second. How tragic! In contrast to this, Tom Landry, former coach of the Dallas cowboys said, "The thrill of knowing Jesus is the greatest thing that ever happened to me ... I think God has put me in a very special place, and He expects me to use it to His glory in everything I do ... whether coaching football or talking to the press, I'm always a Christian ... Christ is first, family second and football third." Sermonillustrations.com Taking first things first often reduces the most complex human problem to a manageable proportion. Dwight Eisenhower.

Ralph welcomes Sherry Turkle, Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT and an expert on culture and therapy, mobile technology, social networking, and sociable robotics to talk about our addictions to screens and how to break out of them. Plus, our resident constitutional scholar, Bruce Fein, opens the program with everything you need to know about the latest Trump indictment.Bruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law.  Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall.I think it's important for the audience to recognize that 100% of the incriminating evidence was supplied by Trump appointees or supporters. No Democrat made a cameo appearance. There was no incriminating evidence from any opponent of Donald Trump. It's all his own people. And therefore, when you think about the indictment, the idea that it's a witch hunt by Trump's political enemies is facially lunatic.Bruce FeinThese expressions by Trump were not good-faith belief that there may have been a few blunders someplace or other. And [they demonstrate] that the whole goal was to defraud the American people out of the right to have a peaceful transition of power based upon a free and fair count of the electoral votes.Bruce FeinSherry Turkle is Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the founding director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self. Professor Turkle is a sociologist, a licensed clinical psychologist, and she is an expert on culture and therapy, mobile technology, social networking, and sociable robotics. She is the author of several books, including Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other, and The Empathy Diaries: A Memoir. That's really what you're fighting— this ethos that says, “When technology makes a problem, technology will solve that problem. In a friction-free manner. It will not involve changing capitalism, changing the structures of power, or saying that science and engineering need to be dethroned as the moral and cultural arbiters for the society we live in.” So, I think that the resistance movement has to come from politics and really has to come from political organization.Sherry Turkle[If I were king in this domain,] you absolutely have legislation that treats generative AI as though it were nuclear energy. In other words, do not say, “Well, there's kind of an analogy. Maybe there's an analogy because it's very powerful.” But to really say, “This is going to disrupt us, it's a national security threat, and it's certainly a threat to our elections…” So, it can wreak havoc— unless you're extremely vigilant and the thing is controlled— with every aspect of our democracy.Sherry TurkleThere's always a big-time gap between the damage of new technology and accountability catching up with it, or public awareness.Ralph NaderHi everybody, Steve Skrovan here. This is halfway between a shameless plug and some useful information. As some of you may know, I have my own Substack page called Bits & Pieces. It's mainly funny stories and essays. I wanted to alert you specifically to the last piece I wrote concerning the Writers' Guild Strike. It's funny but also packed with a lot of information for those of you who are interested. Some of you may think writers and actors striking is not a big deal, but our strike is emblematic of what is going on across many industries where the corporations are trying to turn us all into gig workers. On the RNRH, we have talked a lot about AI for instance, especially on the program you just heard. The writers and the actors have a chance to be the first entities to address regulating AI in a meaningful way. We are on the cutting edge of what people are calling the Hot Labor Summer. So, check it out at steveskrovan.substack.com. That's s-t-e-v-e-s-k-r-o-v-a-n dot substack dot com. We'll link to it on the RNRH page also. Feel free to subscribe. It's free! Thanks. In Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Bobby Scott announced that they have introduced a new bill to raise the minimum wage. To account for the rising cost of living, this new bill would raise the wage not to $15 per hour, but $17. Sanders and Scott note that “If the minimum wage had increased with productivity over the last 50 years, it would be $23 an hour today. If it had increased at the same rate that Wall Street…bonuses have increased, it would be more than $42 an hour.”2. USA Today reports that the Houston Independent School District in Texas has decided to “eliminate 28 school libraries,” and use at least some of those spaces as “discipline centers.”  This article further notes that “The Houston Independent School District is the largest district in Texas and serves more than 189,000 students at its 274 campuses…[and that] The once- independent district was recently taken over by the Texas Education Agency.”3. The Intercept reports that, amid the strikes roiling Hollywood, Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has introduced the Food Secure Strikers Act of 2023. This bill would “repeal a restriction on striking workers receiving SNAP benefits, protect food stamp eligibility for public-sector workers fired for striking, and clarify that any income-eligible household can receive SNAP benefits even if a member of that household is on strike.” This bill would provide a crucial lifeline to striking workers, particularly as the Hollywood bosses have made clear that they are willing to see workers lose their homes before coming back to the negotiating table.4. A new report in Reuters alleges that employees at Elon Musk's Tesla Motors “had been instructed to thwart any customers complaining about poor driving range from bringing their vehicles in for service.” The company even went so far as to create a “Diversion Team” with orders to “cancel as many range-related [service] appointments as possible,” in order to stifle consumer complaints that the automobiles range on a single charge was far below advertised. According to the report “some employees celebrated canceling service appointments by putting their phones on mute and striking a metal xylophone, triggering applause from coworkers who sometimes stood on desks.”5. Bloomberg reports that the Abraham Accords –  Trump's middle east peace plan which rested on inducing Arab states to recognize Israel by offering them money, weapons, or whatever else they desired – seem to be coming apart at the seams. The numbers are stark. While the agreements never enjoyed majority support in any Arab state, support has declined considerably – from 47% initially in the UAE, to just 27%, from 45% to 20% in Bahrain, and 40% to 20% in Saudi Arabia. This last drop is most significant, as the underlying purpose of the agreements were to align Israel and Saudi Arabia against Iran. The Saudis now plan to extract further concessions from the United States.6. Listeners may recall a story from North Carolina about Tricia Cotham, a Democratic state legislator from a safe blue seat who switched parties, giving Republicans a super-majority in the state House – and cast the deciding vote to override the Democratic Governor's veto and impose a 12-week abortion ban. Now, a New York Times report sheds light on why she made the switch: “Lacey Williams, a former advocacy director at the Charlotte-based Latin American Coalition who considered Ms. Cotham a friend for years, said Ms. Cotham “felt she did not get the gratitude or spotlight that she felt she deserved,” and added, “she was jealous that other Democrats were getting…adulation from the party.” This report also suggests that she was working hand-in-glove with Republican leadership prior to her election, suggesting that perhaps this was her plan all along.7. In Julian Assange's native Australia, political officials are calling on the U.S. to drop their efforts to extradite the publisher to the United States to stand trial under the espionage act. These officials include Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Democracy Now! reports that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has rejected this demand, claiming that the WikiLeaks disclosures “risked very serious harm to our national security, to the benefit of our adversaries, and put named human sources at grave risk.” Australian lawmaker Andrew Wilkie,  co-chair of the Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Group, called this “patent nonsense,” and told The Guardian, “Mr. Blinken would be well aware of the inquiries in both the U.S. and Australia which found that the relevant WikiLeaks disclosures did not result in harm to anyone.”8. Finally, former President Donald Trump has been indicted for the third time, this time on four counts related to trying to overturn the 2020 election. Yet, what is most striking about this indictment is that Trump is being charged under the Enforcement Act of 1870, originally intended to prevent Ku Klux Klan terror to deprive Black voters of their 13th, 14th and 15th amendment rights. Section 241 of this law deems criminal any attempt to “conspire to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person” exercising a right protected by the Constitution or federal law,” per the Washington Post. Charging Trump under the Klan act may seem a bit on the nose, but hey, if the hood fits. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

From The Judds to the Dixie Chicks and the Carter Family itself, country music's history is steeped in and rife with family duos, bandsand groups. Warner Music Nashville sister duo Walker Countyadds to that ‘family tradition' with blood-thick harmonies and solidmusicianship. Born and raised in rural Sulphur Springs, Indiana, sistersIvy Dene (lead vocals) and Sophie Dawn (percussion and harmony)have been performing almost as long as they can remember. Sophie'shard-driving rhythms and Ivy's strutting, soulful vocals create a uniqueblend of country music that was inspired by the sounds of middleAmerica they grew up on. And now, having spent years honing theirskills, Walker County is ready to carry on the heritage of countrymusic with their modern-traditional blend. The 2020 CMT Listen Upand Next Women of Country artists started rolling out new music inthe fall, showcasing both their range and true-to-themselves style infeisty rocker “Shovel,” wistful reflection “Drag It Out” and upbeatode to loving relationships “Someone's Someone.” They're kickingoff 2021 with the bright pop country of “Bits & Pieces,” their major label debut single, as they prepare for a breakout year.

Next, he was hired by Atari and was an editor of The Atari Connection magazine, where he wrote the Bits & Pieces column. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. With our discussion of the new film, The Witch, where we spoke a good amount on it and the reaction of viewers, the remainder of our discussion focused on a whole lot of things which has now been broken out as its own episode. The fifth of the rare Bits, Pieces, and Body Parts episodes is here. Your co-hosts go on about a number of interesting topics. We happen to discuss a bit about the 10 Cloverfield Lane title and its relationship (or maybe not so much of a relationship) with the original Cloverfield film and how Hollywood decides to make trailers and advertise. The new Ghostbuster reboot trailer is here and we discuss that. Also we discuss the Oscars, how two genre legends were memorialized (Wes Crave and Leonard Nimoy), and how many genre films (or films with genre roots) won awards including The Revenant, Room, The Hateful Eight, Mad Max, and Ex Machina. Lastly there's an interview with director, screenwriter, and animator Michael Neel who is behind such cult flicks as Drive-In Horror Show and Infinite Santa 8000. He talks about his new projects including a whole web series related to the Infinite Santa post-apocalyptic universe. Also, there's a new Terror Tantrum review by Patrick Lacey where he discusses the Scream Factory blu-ray release, Curse and Curse 2. Call this episode a bonus episode since our review of The Witch and 10 Clovefield Lane are all but upon us. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Welcome to the 150th episode of Dark Discussions ... well, at least the first part. Though we have a discussion of one of the best genre films in sometime, prior to the talk, we discussed the various things that have gone on these past couple of weeks and talk about them. Things that are brought up in conversation books: Jonathan Kellerman's The Murder Book, John Sandford's Rules of Prey, and Stephen King's Doctor Sleep. Mike and Abe give their review of Guardians of the Galaxy. Films including Lucy, Hercules, The Sacrament, Lake Placid, Burnt Offerings, and Sharknado 2 are spoken of. Television programming including The Strain and The Leftovers are brought up. The manga, King's Game, is given some airtime. And (at the time), upcoming films Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Into the Storm are brought up, including our thoughts. But also the passing of three important people in the genre occurred: Marilyn Burns, star of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, makeup man Dick Smith, and author/podcaster Lawrence Santoro. Dark Discussions speaks fondly of the three and we wrap up this episode as we get ready for Part 2 of episode 150 where we discuss ... check back in a few days. Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. Another installment of Bits, Pieces, and Body Parts and this time we have interviews of directors, screenwriters, and authors. Just released on Video on Demand is the new film Grave Encounters 2. This second installment of the franchise is written by the same screenwriter/directors of the first, the Vicious brothers. Dark Discussions interviews the two film makers about their new film and the franchise. Next up is the author Charles Day to discuss his Halloween novel Legend of the Pumpkin Thief, a throwback to a less complicated time. The peace however is interrupted when something comes to small town New York state to cause havoc to the local. Following Charles is writer/director Patrick Rae, the filmmaker for the upcoming Nailbiter, a horror movie that has been picked up by Lions Gate and is to be released later this year. Playing the convention circuits, it has won numerous awards and has been well received everywhere it has screened. Lastly, author Eric Brown comes aboard to talk about his new work, Crypto-Squad. Being well versed in both zombie literature and cryptozoology, the novel is a mashup of the two where a group of mythological beings come together to fight the oncoming zombie apocalypse. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. It’s been over half a year but finally a second volume of Bits, Pieces, and Body Parts arrives. Yet with this edition we have a bit of a change. Unlike the prior episode, Episode 014, where your cohosts were live discussing genre news and reviewing a film immediately after viewing it at the local theater, this new volume is a mish mash of various subjects and topics. First off cohosts Gordon and Philip discuss some of your favorite horror icons as was the case in Episode 038, Iconic Characters in Horror. Here a short conversation on Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees commences before moving on to a detailed talk of the somewhat overlooked Tony Todd larger than life monster, The Candyman. Next, fantasy and zombie author Elaine Isaak and thriller author K.D. Mason are interviewed, discussing their novels and what’s coming next. Both will autograph any copies of their novels that are purchased from their websites. Continuing, Thomas Newman, the director of the zombie film Bong of the Dead and the upcoming zombie western Deadsville, is interviewed where he discusses the home video release of his debut film (February 21st , 2012) and an exciting synopsis of his highly anticipated follow up. Afterwards author Charles Day chats about his debut novel, The Legend of the Pumpkin Thief, which brings the spirit of Halloween together with the nostalgia of a Steven Spielberg movie. Lastly, cohost Eric and Philip interview the owners of Fatal Pictures, Zach Green and Richard Powell, specifically discussing their half hour psychological horror films Worm (to become a feature length production) and Familiar, to be given its world premier at Toronto Frightfest March 2nd, 2012. Familiar will be introduced by Fangoria magazine and the presentation will let the audience meet and greet the film makers. Once again, join Dark Discussions for another episode of genre fare. Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. Dark Discussions does its first non-topical podcast. Though no specific theme is discussed, Gordon and Philip do a 360° roundabout through horror, pulp, and genre. On location at the cinema to see Final Destination 5 in 3D, various films are discussed including the Patrick Lussier/Todd Farmer productions of Drive Angry and My Bloody Valentine 3D. With horror on our hosts’ minds, the After Dark Horrorfest 8 Films to Die For yearly releases are focused on including some specific titles as The Hamiltons, Mulberry Street, and Unrest. Not to be left behind, superhero films such as Kick Ass enter the conversation but more importantly Philip and Gordon give their opinion on Anne Hathaway’s turn as the Cat Woman in the upcoming Christopher Nolan Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. To round up the discussion prior to the viewing of Final Destination 5, our hosts discuss the novels they have been reading including Jonathan Maberry’s Dragon Factory, Ben Tripp’s Rise Again, Dan Simmons’ Flashback, Clive Barker’s Mister B. Gone, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s novels Gideon’s Sword, Blasphemy, and the Agent Pendergast novel Cold Vengeance, among others. Returning after the film, Gordon and Philip give their spoiler free review on Final Destination 5, highly recommending all horror fans to get to the theater before the film leaves its 3D presentation behind. One thing however, more Tony Todd! To finish up, news and more news takes the forefront. The upcoming remakes of Conan the Barbarian, Fright Night, and the Zack Snyder Superman film Man of Steel are highly anticipated but will they be successful? Dark Discussions talks about the new Lois Lane and who they would have loved to have seen in the role; other than Amy Addams what about Emily Blunt, Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman, Megan Fox, or even Clare Grant? What happened to Frank Darabont and the Walking Dead? Stephen King’s Dark Tower film adaption is shut down. Can A Serbian Film actually be released in North American theaters? Would Conan be better off as a series like the fantastic Lucy Lawless show Spartacus? Why did Guillermo Del Toro walk away from an adaption of H. P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness? Did one of our favorite characters in True Blood get killed off? Enter within, faithful listeners, into our dark discussion and find out all that awaits.
