Episode 332: Back from a break...and a design marathon

On today’s podcast episode, I’m chatting about what I’ve been up to in the break: probably the most intense design and knitting sprint I’ve ever done! And stories from an all-hands-on-deck photoshoot that was a lot of fun.  Just a little content warning for this episode, in case you’re feeling tender: in this week’s podcast I’m also remembering my very dear friend and mentor Paula Emons-Fuessle, who passed away at the end of March. It is a huge loss to the knitting community, but I have a lot of happy and beautiful memories of time we spent together, and so much gratitude for her kindness and generosity over the years. I wanted to share some of that today, but if loss is a heavy topic for you right now I just wanted to let you know before you hit play.

Anderson Podcast on iTunes!I am a bit scattered off and on so hang in there with me to hear about the fantastic giveaway. There is much to talk about and link for today's short podcast episode but most importantly I want to share a few photos of the Knitcircus Gradient Stripes Matching Socks Sets that I am giving away so you can get a good picture of what the socks look like. This is a new gradient concept created exclusively by Knitcircus and the owner and my friend Jaala Spiro. The photos for today's post are taken from the Knitcircus Etsy shop with permission.I love this fun photo of the Gradient Stripes Matching Socks Sets colorways. It is a unique concept to have gradient stripes plus the yarn is squishy and compelling to knit. It's a winner all around. The change in stripe colors is gradual and interesting and subtle. You will love this yarn!Come What May Colorway of the Gradient Stripes Matching Socks SetThis is the next colorway I want to get and knit up right away! I have to put my order in with Jaala. This is the matching socks set colorway called Tropical Sunset. I knit the one sock in Tropical Sunset that I'm giving away to a lucky winner! I used up one ball and you will get the other ball to complete the second sock. It is gorgeous and fun!I will select two winners for the Knitcircus Gradient Stripes Matching Socks Sets. The prizes are as follows:~ One winner will get the already knit sock by me and the second ball of yarn to make a matching sock. I show this already completed sock on the podcast.~ The second winner will get a Gradient Stripes Socks Set in their color of choice. You don't need to watch the video to enter to win!To enter leave ONE comment on this blog post that includes an email address or your Ravelry ID or username. Please be patient for your comment to appear on the blog, there is a delay for me to approve comments. Please don't keep posting the same comment by pushing the publish button more than once, multiple entries make it an unfair contest. I know sometimes it is an accident so no worries, I try my best to take out multiple entries as I publish comments. The one sock I knit from the set, that I shared on the podcast, is made using my How I Make My Socks free pattern on US size 1 needles, casting on 64 stitches with a 7-inch cuff. The foot length is easily adjustable. The sock is knit to fit a US 7.5-8 women's shoe size.Click here for the How I Make My Socks free pattern!Okay, now for the various other links I discuss in podcast Episode 10:Two Minor corrections: 1. I say I never got to wear blue when I meant to say I always wore blue. (I also never complained to my mom about my dislike of blue so she had no idea.) 2. I say I am going to make baby size fingerless mitts ~ no to this ~ I meant to say thumbless mitts for a newer baby or infant.Twinset Designs podcast with Jan Hamby of Fair Winds Farm on Etsy ~ coming soon! (the beautiful teal alpaca farm yarn)!Eggy Johnson sock yarn ~ no online shop. Barbara is a good one to follow on Instagram as ravblb and on Ravelry as blb. I don't know if she takes requests for her yarn or not. It is really beautiful.I'm wearing the Lullaby Rain Shawlette by Paula Emons-Fuessle. I fail to mention this at first. The yarn for the Lullaby Rain shawlette is Quince & Co. Finch in the Frank's Plum colorway. The shawl pin is from Deerfield Creations.  I love this light-weight shawl pin, highly recommend.Waiting for Winter Mitten and Fingerless Mitts pattern, the stripey Noro Kureyon Mittens. Here is the link to the blog post about the stripey mittens I made in Maine. Here is the photo of the Entrelac piece I frogged to get 5 mittens worth of Noro Kureyon. It was about 10 years old and still on the needles (literally).Sheppard Handmade Etsy Shop ~ one of my favorite pottery artists sent me the sheep mug as a thank you for hosting a giveaway for her. I love her buttons and have used them on several projects. She is wonderful and has great customer service located out of Canada. Highly recommend her shop! There were a few other things I picked up in Maine that I forgot to share and I will do so another time very soon. Don't forget to enter the super fun double sock sets giveaway including one already knit sock by me!!! Leave a comment to enter if interested in winning the Gradient Stripes Matching Socks Sets. 2 winners randomly selected soon.Love you all! I interviewed Meri, one half of the brain behind Amirisu Magazine--Tokuko Ochiai, the other half, was unfortunately unavailable as she had just moved. This interview was originally planned to be a short one, but I had a lot of fun talking with Meri, time flew and it's almost a full podcast episode length, so I decided to make a separate episode for the interview (taking a page from Subway Knits podcast and her In The Conductor's Booth series). I had so much fun doing the interview, I already have a few others planned for the near future, so stay tuned! Teardrop, from Amirisu Winter-Spring 2013 I also would like to thank Paula Emons-Fuessle of Knitting Pipeline who mentioned me on her podcast and sending new listeners to the podcast :) Thank you, Paula! Show notes at www.knittingpipeline.com  A special welcome to new listeners from A Playful Day Podcast.  Thank you Green Triangle Girl for the interview and for sending new listeners my way. Charr and Bronwyn are joining me today in The Blethering Room.  We had some faulty brain synapses and we are blaming that on our Post Camp KIP Let Down.  Also I had the mic too close to the computer so there is some background noise today that I normally don’t have.  Grosbeaks are back and also the White Throated Sparrow! Franklin the Wild Turkey is pecking on the windows. Camp KIP organized by Jackie of the Positively Overcommitted Podcast Good Reader $4.99 app Thank you, Dorothy, for the tutorial! Brenda Castiel aka Goodstuff gave a talk on designing. Paula’s projects at Camp: Breezy by Hannah Fettig Quince & Co Tern Boothbay Blue. Skyp Ribbed Socks by Adrienne Ku McHenry Hat by Susan B Anderson Interweave Knits Holiday Gifts 2011 and $5.50 individual pattern.  KathieR very nicely told me that the patterns are separate $5.50 each or the e-mag is $7.49 from Interweave. Good tips for attending knitting retreats. These wonderful businesses are sponsors of our retreat and this episode: Quince & Co, Ewe-nique Yarns, Peddler’s Way Quilt Co, TheFiber Universe, The Blend, and Knit4Together in Dunlap IL (north Peoria suburb)…and of course, my Longaberger Home business. Their sponsorship helped keep the cost of the retreat down so we hope you will support them as best you can. complete show notes at www.knittingpipeline.com I would like to thank the wonderful knitters who tested my first shawl design, Piper’s Journey. It was released last week and thanks to all of you it has gotten a lot of attention. The Knit Along is piping right along too. A big round of applause for test knitters Molly, Amy, Bronwyn, Charr, Judy, Louise, Meghan, Nancy, Sarah, Deb, Mimi, and tomatkatgreen. I enjoy your feedback, comments on the blog, and questions. Feel free to write to me at Paulaef@aol.com or on Ravelry as PrairiePiper Our retreat! We still are still accepting reservations... March 2-3, 2012 (Friday night and all day Saturday) Crossroads United Methodist Church, 1420 N Main St., Washington IL 61571 Charr and Bronwyn are in The Blethering Room today. Charr:  Honey Cowl and Norby by Gudrun Johnston Bronwyn: Piper’s Journey by Paula Emons-Fuessle, A Very Good Cowl Indeed by Liz Abinante, Flurries Cowl, Cozy Worm Child’s Cowl, LTK Braided Cap by Theresa Belville Paula started Mystery Mitten KAL with Laura Linneman General Retreat Tips Things to bring: Social knitting. Easy, autopilot. More than one project, possibly another weight and needle size. Waste yarn and needles in case you want to learn a new technique. Business cards. Vistaprint has low cost/free. Camera Knitting Notions Wear: Your handknits! Bring layers of clothing as facilities tend to run hot/cold and you may too. Be comfortable. For those coming to our retreat please bring a mug for tea or hot drinks so we can save on paper goods. We talk about eating and shopping in our town of Washington. Maria's Tea Room for those with special diets or if you just like good food. Basta O'Neills for wonderful Italian and Irish fare Gracie's Sports Bar and Grille next to The Sleep Inn Michael's Italian Feast. Famous for their bread. Not much atmosphere here though. Most of the locals carry out. Just so you know. Cummin's for cafe style food, jello salad, and cottage cheese. Their breakfast special is super and is only a bit over $4. We forgot to mention The C-Note Pub which is located in the same building as The Cornerstone Inn. They have wonderful sandwiches and THE BEST sweet potato fries. The Denhardt Baking Company is our usual place to go for breakfast after church.  High Note/Low Note Bronwyn’s high is Grady’s imagination. Low (very) is bending back a fingernail. Ouch! Paula’s high is a new apple called Autumn Glory. It is has a unique taste. Low Note: mealy and mushy apples. Charr’s highs. Seeing a bright red male cardinal outside of Paula’s window and Red Velvet Cake Doughnuts from Ron’s Bakery.  Haste ye back!
