Gun violence is a top voting issue for Latinos and Latinas this election cycle. So to explore how Latines are thinking about the topic, we traveled to Texas. The Lone Star State has more registered guns than any other state in the country, and it's also home to some of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history — many of them directly targeting Latinos and Latinas. On this episode of Latino USA, producer Reynaldo Leaños Jr. travels to El Paso, Texas to speak with Latinx activists and gun owners about gun reform and safety ahead of the November presidential election. Maria Hinojosa returns to Uvalde, Texas to catch up with a survivor of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary and see how the community has been mobilizing around gun reform. This story is part of our ongoing political coverage “The Latino Factor: How We Vote."You can read more about the episode here. In 2019, I started Elevar Development to work with companies and individuals to build professional skillsets, strategies, and confidence. Over two years ago, I decided that coaching and professional development is great for those who have L&D teams and the financial support, but our community needed something that would help inspire, educate, and push us to new levels.April 2022, I started recording Corporate Cafecito as a way of sharing insights, strategies, and experiences. Today marks our 100th episode. The episodes cover everything from how to negotiate a salary to understanding what AI is, and everything in between. This platform has allowed all of us to see and hear from those individuals who have been the “first and only's” in the rooms, those who didn't know English as they started their careers, and entrepreneurs who have started, fallen and gotten up again. My biggest goal was to show two things…1. That you are never alone and 2. Someone has done it so it CAN be done. The professional expertise shared on Corporate Cafecito has such a wide breadth because we are a broad people. The podcast shows that you can succeed in everything from house music to architecture, from starting a local business to managing an international Fortune 100. Latines are everywhere and we must lift each other up, create those paths, and share our stories. The best way to connect with each other is through a Cafecito, that warm cup of coffee in our hands lets us know we are in a welcoming place with a friend and open to sharing. To all of my guests, thank you for being part of this amazing journey. Heeeeeeey! We're wrapping up another amazing season of the Elevating la Cultura podcast. And we have officially passed 5600 downloads! Thank you so much to all my listeners for your continued support through each season. I'm especially grateful to each guest that takes time out of their day to share their story and inspire others. The elevating la cultura brand has grown since last season with a new mentorship program, and even more in person events. And I've already got a few new things planned for 2024. Make sure you're part of the email list to know what's new every month. It's been a great season with my guests sharing their experiences in navigating higher education and corporate spaces. For many first gen Latines, we are navigating these spaces with no guide or blueprint for how to succeed. It can be lonely, challenging, isolating, and traumatic. With the interviews this season, I wanted to bring visibility to these stories to help others who are navigating this space, or will be navigating this space to see that they're not alone. And that there are many offering help and support for those who need it. As I close out another season, I'm forever thankful you joined me in listening. I'll be coming back this spring with Season 9! In the meantime, stay connected with me on instagram, and stay tuned for our comadre brunch calendar. I'm planning more workshops, more mentorships, more collaborative events in the new year, and I can't wait to announce all the things I'm planning for us. This was a fun season, where I learned, and was inspired by all my guests. Ok amigos, thank you so much for listening, after you listen feel free to take a screenshot to post on IG and tag @elevatinglacultura or send me a DM. You can also comment on our YouTube video if you're watching online. I always like to hear from people and how they resonate with the stories I share. SO leave a review on apple podcasts so we can get more ears listening to these stories and we can continue elevating la cultura.Enjoy the rest of the day/afternoon/evening whenever you're listening, y nos vemos pronto.

This season, Season 8 I'm going to be talking with Latina's who have pursued higher education, and have landed corporate positions. This is a goal that many first and second gen Latinas have grown up aspiring to. While there is a growing representation of Latines in corporate jobs, the system is still hard to navigate and doesn't always treat us well as far as pay equity, and a safe environment to show up authentically. I know there are many of us that are doing all we can to make a difference and help others along the way, but the burden can be a lot. I'm hoping that with this season we can learn how to support each other, encourage the next generation, and do our best to bring awareness to inequities in a corporate/capitalist world, so the next generation can have a better opportunity to thrive.IG: @karinamora_prints & @elevatinglaculturaThere will be a new episode every Tuesday, so after you listen feel free to take a screenshot to post on IG and tag @elevatinglacultura or send me a DM. Since being a business owner for 13 years now and with all the millions of pivots I've had to do in the past 6 years I've found so much value in the people who I can bounce ideas off of, vent to, and cheer me on through all the challenges. Many of us are in this time of transition, or pivoting, and feel like we are on the cusp of something that's about to pop off in our business If you're a solo entrepreneur, you know the struggle of doing all the things, all the time, and trying to keep up with all the new trends when it comes to social media. It can be overwhelming, which is getting in the way of faster growth, if you've been thinking “it would be great to have an accountability person, or someone to bounce ideas off of and brainstorm next steps with” I'm your person.Alright, enjoy the rest of the day/afternoon/evening whenever you're listening, y nos vemos next week with our first guest for Season 8.
Jozlyn, Gaby, Angela, and Lloyd chat with the host of La Vida Mas Chevere Podcast, Paulette Erato, and discuss the childfree experience. As per Paulette, being childfree is the least interesting thing about her. But it is a core identity. And finding other childfree Latinas or Latines like her hasn't always been easy. They are routinely slandered and made to believe there's something wrong with them for not wanting to have children.Refusing to conform to societal norms puts them at odds with their culture. But also knowing that bearing and raising children is not meant for them is a massive measure of self-awareness, boundaries, and frankly, peak adulting. So while she thinks being childfree is as natural for her as having curly hair, brown eyes, and being right-handed, She tries to make sure that part of her is visible. If only so that other childfree Latines looking for examples of a thriving life outside society's expectations can use her as a model. Many believe that having a baby is a woman's most important achievement and society places a great deal of pressure on women to become mothers. People always seem to frown upon those who are not following the "standard protocol" of getting married in their young adult years, having a couple of kids and then growing old and retiring.Great news! Women can have fulfilling lives without children! We unpack a lot during this episode but this is a very important conversation that needs to be had.Support the showFollow all the Chaos - Website - https://www.keepingupwithchaos.net/ FB - https://www.facebook.com/keepingupwithchaospodcast

Latines are a diverse group of people, with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. But Anti-Blackness, hiding in plain sight, continues to affect many members of the diaspora. Despite the fact that Latines come in all shades and skin tones, there is a troubling pattern of discrimination and marginalization against Black Latines. Today, our panelists are tackling this important topic head-on, and discussing the ways in which anti-Blackness impacts their lives and the Latino community as a whole. Constanza Eliana dives into some uncomfortable truths with our panel and explore ways to not only acknowledge the existence but also combat anti-Blackness within Latinidad.Featuring: Jose Richard Aviles, Michelle Morales, and Daisy RomeroTag #thestrangerfruit or @ us on social media to let us know what you think of the episode! The daughter of migrant farmworkers, Rebecca Ruvalcaba witnessed the growth of the Latines community from a few originators, like her father, Benito Salizar. Rebecca's parents instilled in her a desire to learn, and to serve. She adapted to a late-in-life diagnosis of dyslexia to earn degrees from Indiana University South Bend and the University of Notre Dame. She became a social worker, a director of La Casa de Amistad, and served in various leadership roles at the University of Notre Dame. In 2018, Rebecca sat down to talk about her roots in South Bend's migrant farm community, her growth as a learner and a leader, and her continued passion for serving her community. I'm sure you've heard of the Golden Rule...treat others as you would like to be treated. The newest and perhaps best spin on this is the Platinum Rule...treat others the way THEY would like to be treated.Nallely and Mario explore what that means in the workplace and how to be inclusive and respectful of people's preferences. This may be awkward for some Latines, as not everyone wants to be hugged and kissed, something that is synonymous with our hellos and goodbyes.Hope the sun is shining brightly for you. have an iced cafecito and chill!Want to join us for a cafecito or share a topic for us to cover:https://www.corpcafecito.com/contact-usOr email us at:Nallely@corpcafecito.comMario@corpcafecito.comIf you would like to receive individual coaching or to schedule a workshop for you and your team, please visit:www.elevardevelopment.com or email Nallely@elevardevelopment.comNallely Suárez Gass - Executive Coach

How important is negotiating your salary? It's really important and can impact your salaries for future jobs If we look at the Latine community, as a whole, we make $0.73 on the dollar compared to non-white workers, which according to McKinsey & Company adds up to $288 Billion as a total. Imagine the generational wealth we could build or the businesses we could start with that money. Latines are currently 17.3% of the work force but in the next 8 years that number will climb to over 22%.So if you are in the 39% of people who DO negotiate your salary…good news, 89% of the time, you will see an increase in the counteroffer. Hola!Y bienbenidas to a new season! I'm Karina host of Elevating la Cultura podcast. I wrapped up season 5 in August, where I got into it with my own story. I'll be honest, it wasn't easy writing and recording those episodes because I had to dig a little into my past experiences to make the connection to how I interact with the world today, and specifically why I'm passionate about sharing stories and pouring into this community. This season, Season 6 is going to be featuring Latina's in the food space. I hope this season is inspiring, and perhaps even nostalgic as we hear stories we can relate to, and talk about our favorite foods. I'm always up for continuing the conversations so subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss when an episode goes live. I also encourage you to share with others because the more people we have talking about our stories as Latines living in the US, the easier it will be to make a collective change for a better future. There will be a new episode every Tuesday, so after you listen feel free to take a screenshot to post on IG and tag @elevatinglacultura or send me a DM. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about owning a local yarn shop with my guest, Ana Campos. Ana is a Brazilian knitting instructor, fiber witch, and designer with over 20 years of knitting experience. She currently makes her home by the sea in Salem, Massachusetts, known as the Witch City. As a Latina and an immigrant, she values the opportunities for connection, community, and common ground that knitting creates. Ana's love for the knitting community led her to open Circle of Stitches, the witchiest yarn shop, in 2015. Her focus is on empowering knitters to grow their skills and technical knowledge, so everyone can make pieces they love. She is passionate about teaching students how to customize patterns for the perfect fit. She also loves teaching Portuguese knitting, which reminds her of her grandma Tina back home in Rio, and hosting her monthly tarot study group. Ana is an inaugural member of the Vogue Knitting Diversity Advisory Council, and a co-creator of Latines y Lana, an ongoing project to elevate and share the work of Latine fiber artists. Ana loves helping folks find inspiration and expand their skills, and her favorite projects are sweaters and socks. When she is not at her shop, you can find her elbows-deep in her dye pots. Growing up in the tropics gave her a lifelong passion for bright colors and bold combinations, which she brings to her line of hand-dyed yarns, Toil & Trouble. She loves dyeing colorful sock yarns, and hopes this book will help you fall in love with socks too! Find Ana online at www.circleofstitches.com, on Instagram @circleofstitches and visit her store in person at 66 Wharf Street, Salem, MA. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Craftsy. The stories we tell matter. I believe that to my core. It's why Moneda Moves exists as a space to host more stories about the intersection of Latines, underrepresented communities and money. So you can imagine how excited I was to interview a trailblazer creating inclusive reporting around fintech, documenting diverse voices and leading the way. Today, we speak with Nicole Casperson, Creator and Founder of WTFintech? It's a newsletter, released twice a week all about founders in fintech, trends and how that affects you, the end user. Why does fintech matter? It's reinventing the way you do your banking, investing, preparing for retirement with technology. It's also a huge opportunity to get the relationship with our underrepresented communities right, to increase access and better deliver services to consumers. Casperson shares how she thinks fintech can impact our future, how she increases representation in media and more. Enjoy the interview — this was a good one. RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) Remember how exciting it was when we put on a live show last Thanksgiving? It was so amazing, we decided to do it again! By which we mean we decided to re-run that show. Welcome to our first, and apparently last, annual KITM Thanksgiving Special, with your hosts, David Waldman and Greg Dworkin, and their special guests, the Loudoun County Rockettes! Brought to you by… you. We sure couldn't have done it without you. We're still grateful for you, even if your name might possibly be mispronounced by us. (David's got “Nevada”, “Latiñes” and “Latines” down pat, now if only he could say “adversary”…) There is a lot to be thankful for! 80,000,000 legal votes. 306 electoral votes. Over 30 transparently idiotic lawsuits, and counting. Several of the dumbest, craziest lawyers in the country. We should thank The Resistance, fighting from the last inauguration right up to this one. And, the few, proud, honest Republicans... Webcams on laptops, relaying LGBT bashers' laptops to Zoom. And, John P. Flannery, the Robert Redford of Willy Wonkas, all out there, fighting the good fight. It's no time to get sick of winning. Trump started rigging this election when the last one ended. Trump hasn't quit endangering the world and his corruption won't stop until it is stopped. Yesterday, the Trump Supreme Court and their new superspreader Justice put a big boot heel on both state's rights, and public health by blocking New York's coronavirus restrictions on houses of worship, formally trading “latte drinking Prius drivers” with “wine drinking bicycle riders” in the Supreme Court lexicon. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler are bad people who you shouldn't be trusting, but they sure are rich. Meanwhile, we die from a preventable disease. Idiocy remains popular in South Dakota. You can even lose your job if you aren't one. West Virginia can't keep up... in fact, they don't really want to. Perhaps, if we only had more self-destructive door-knockers, we'd have more Democrats in Congress. While Democrats remind themselves that their Latine and Black constituencies aren't monolithic, it would also help to remember that Asia is a big place also.
Silvia Foster-Frau is a reporter for the Washington Post and we spoke about the complexity behind being a Latinx-American. Hispanic Heritage Month falls between two months, it's almost symbolic for the way most of us feel, "Ni de aquí, ni de alla." We are stuck in the in between of not being American enough to be American and not being Latinx enough to be Latinx. As Edward James Olmos said, "it's exhausting!" The amount of gatekeeping Latinx have to deal with throughout their life puts a heavy burden of limitations on us. From people with Latinx heritage who do not speak Spanish seen as less than, to people who cannot speak English also seen as less than. We are in a sliding scale of identity. All of these topics are explored in Silvia Foster-Frau and Rachel Hatzipanagos' Washington Post Article, Somos Latinos. La Xicanista Podcast | A show about all things Chicane as told by a feminist Xicana.
What's up, y'all?! Thought I'd forget? Here's a poem that I want to share with y'all on this 21st of December, 2020. Day of the Great Conjunction 2020 and Winter Solstice 2020. This poem resonates with the first episode in the sense that we, Latines and Chicanes, are a product of our mestizaje and that we are all one cosmic race. It also is an expression of the inspiration behind this podcast, La Xicanista. Enjoy!

1 Cristobal Soto : Don Andres/llegando Al Callao 2 Gurrufio : Maroa 3 Nilamaye : Tierra 4 Jacob do bandolim : Assanhado 5 Cheo Hurtado: Seis Chipoleao https://www.discogs.com/fr/artist/3873555-Crist%C3%B3bal-Soto -Dwight Andrews Danca Das Kashala E Sarhanna -Dwight Andrews Moers 1978 For Tyondai Braxton Born 10/26/78 » ; de l’album « Mmotia The Little People » https://www.discogs.com/fr/Dwight-Andrews-Mmotia-The-Little-People/release/4187663 -Muhal Richard Abrams « Bloodline » ; de l’album « Blu Blu Blu » https://www.discogs.com/fr/Muhal-Richard-Abrams-Orchestra-Blu-Blu-Blu/release/1295499 -Muhal Richard Abrams « Young At Heart » ; de l’album « Young At Heart/Wise In Time » https://www.discogs.com/Muhal-Richard-Abrams-Young-At-Heart-Wise-In-Time/release/1397998 -Jason Palmer « In a Certain Way » ; de l’album « Traveling High » http://www.jasonpalmermusic.com -Charif Negardane et Ziad Zidawi ; CZ 101 « Si tôt pour un Sitar » https://hisstology.bandcamp.com/
“From the bottom will the genius come that makes our ability to live with each other possible. I believe that with all my heart.” These are the words of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Dominican-American writer Junot Díaz. His hope is fiercely reality-based, a product of centuries lodged in his body of African-Caribbean suffering, survival, and genius.
