The RBA meets next month, with the decision due on 20 May. Regardless of what happens with the election and despite this week's slightly hotter-than-expected inflation print, a rate cut is "locked in" according to Westpac. Many in the market agree.  And whilst some believe it is the last cut we could get for a while, the market is pricing in up to three more cuts for the rest of the year.  Should these cuts materialise, there is a cohort of capital-intensive and consumer-facing businesses that could benefit from lower debt costs and increased disposable income. Of course, this outlook needs to be balanced against the reason for the cuts in the first place - a slowing economy.  To help us understand where that balance lies, guest host Matthew Kidman of Centennial Asset Management was joined by Matthew Haupt from Wilson Asset Management and Tim Johnston from Tyndall Asset Management.  Together, they run the ruler over no less than five ASX companies that could benefit from lower rates. For good measure, they share a name that they believe will be a winner in a lower rate environment. Please note this episode was filmed on 23 April 2025.

With inflation finally heading in the right direction and Trump's trade war throwing global markets a curveball, investors are laser-focused on central banks, and the RBA is firmly in the spotlight.  A second rate cut is widely expected in May, with markets pricing in a 98% chance. So, how are the pros positioning their portfolios in a falling rate environment? To unpack this and more, Matthew Haupt from Wilson Asset Management and Tim Johnston from Tyndall Asset Management sat down with special guest host, Matthew Kidman from Centennial Asset Management.  In the episode, they dig into how lower interest rates influence portfolio construction, which sectors stand to benefit, and how professionals assess the impact on capital-intensive or heavily indebted companies.  They also explore the growing importance of dividends and yield in a low-rate environment, and, of course, share one rate-sensitive stock they believe the market is currently mispricing. If you're looking to sharpen your strategy in a shifting rate environment, this episode is not to be missed.  Please note this episode was filmed on 23 April 2025

With one rate cut already in the books and another expected from the RBA in May, the landscape for Australian equities is shifting fast. Markets are now pricing in as many as three additional cuts over the next year, raising a critical question for investors: which ASX stocks stand to benefit - and which could struggle - as interest rates continue to fall? In this episode, Centennial Asset Management's Matthew Kidman hosts Matthew Haupt from Wilson Asset Management and Tim Johnston from Tyndall Asset Management - two investors with deep insights into how monetary policy moves ripple through the ASX. They reveal which companies they believe are poised to outperform in a falling rate environment, which ones are worth avoiding, and how they're positioning their portfolios for what could be a very different 12 months ahead. This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with author Tim Johnston, author of the novels Descent, The Current, the story collection Irish Girl, and the young adult novel Never So Green. He is the recipient of the 2015 Iowa Author Award and his latest novel — Distant Sons — is the focus of this episode. What if Sean Courtland's old Chevy truck had broken down somewhere else? What if he'd never met Denise Givens, a waitress at a local tavern, and gotten into a bar fight defending her honor? Or offered a ride to Dan Young, another young man like Sean, burdened by secrets and just drifting through the small Wisconsin town?Instead, Sean enlists Dan's help with a construction job in the basement of a local—the elderly, reclusive Marion Devereaux — and gradually the two men come to realize that they've washed up in a place haunted by the disappearance of three young boys decades earlier. As Sean and Dan's friendship deepens, and as Sean gets closer to Denise and her father, they come to the attention of a savvy local detective, Corrine Viegas, who has her own reasons for digging into Dan's past — and for being unable to resist the pull of the town's unsolved mystery. And with each chance connection, an irreversible chain of events is set in motion that culminates in shattering violence and the revelation of long-buried truths.Gripping and immersive, this crime novel by bestselling author Tim Johnston becomes so much more: a book about friendship and love and good hard work — and a masterful read about how the most random intersection of lives can have consequences both devastating and beautiful. This episode is hosted by educator and author Douglas Grant, author of the novels Preemptive and Imaginary Lines.Grab a copy of Tim Johnson's Distant Sons here! The first chapter can make or break a reader's engagement with a story. We as writers must craft brilliant opening pages to hook those picky readers, so let's study the stories of others to see how they do it! For the first time in a while we have us a prologue, folks. But what a prologue. We are transported to a 1976 summer evening tense with sport and hormones and mystery as two brothers run off to play a baseball game…but only one returns. It's a damn beautiful prologue, the cadence of the prose flowing like a river such boys would splash in to cool off after a hard nine innings in the schoolyard. The narrator focuses on the experience of the elder brother, stuck with his younger brother for the game, so caught up in the game he forgets about the brother altogether. As he walks home through the woods he remembers the boy who had gone missing a year ago—and as the prologue ends, it sounds like the younger brother has met the same fate. Now one of my biggest beefs about prologues of this caliber is that they're often some sort of cover for a lousy first chapter, one that brings the momentum to a grinding halt and dumps us with information before attempting to restart the narrative action. For Johnston, this is not the case. Granted, we have been shifted to a new time—2018—and ride with a new character named Sean. However, we are not given a ton of exposition—hardly any at all, really. We are watching Sean deal with his busted truck and his prediction of how his future interaction with his father may go when he gets home. I stopped at this point due to time, so how this broken truck impacts Sean, I cannot say. What I will say is that the prologue is a brilliant study of powerful prose that balances a lush setting with the relatable pangs of a boy aspiring to be more and with the looming fear of nefarious danger in the background. Even if you don't want to read the rest of the novel, I recommend fellow writers check out Distant Sons for the prologue alone. And what will you find in those first five pages? Let's find out! Cheers!

Some of the biggest stocks on the ASX started out as minnows.  Take BHP Group (ASX: BHP) and CSL (ASX: CSL) for example, today two of the biggest stocks in the country. Once upon a time, these stocks were known as Broken Hill Proprietary Company and Commonwealth Serum Laboratories and very few people knew of them. It took years - decades even - of toiling away in relative anonymity before these companies cracked the big time.  Imagine if you knew then what you know now.  I'm sure I'm not alone in my daydreams of borrowing Doc Brown's time machine and whizzing back to invest $1000 in the shares of BHP and CSL when they first listed - for those who are curious that was 10 August 1885 for BHP and 30 May 1994 for CSL (although, CSL was founded in 1916).  Alas, we cannot. But the next best thing we can do is try to identify current small caps that could ultimately grow into tomorrow's large caps, or at least, grow over the year ahead.  So in this episode, Bell Direct's Grady Wulff was joined by Tim Johnston from Tyndall Asset Management and Tobias Yao from Wilson Asset Management for their analysis of three stocks that could outperform over the next 12 months. While there are winds in the sails of the healthcare industry, such as an ageing and wealthy population willing to pay for healthcare services, building a great healthcare business takes a long time. Drugs and devices require huge amounts of R&D, often with astronomical price tags attached, and the regulatory process is arduous – as it should be when people's lives are at stake. Add to these high barriers to entry the dominance of the incumbents, and it makes you wonder why anyone would try to build a healthcare company in the first place.  Fortunately, things change. Existing technologies evolve, new technologies are born, and opportunities are created for emerging companies to enter the fray. In that vein, this episode of Buy Hold Sell is focused on the hidden gems hidden within the smaller end of the healthcare market.  Bell Direct's Grady Wulff is joined by Tim Johnston from Tyndall Asset Management and Tobias Yao from Wilson Asset Management for their tips on analysing stocks within the sector, their thoughts on traditional plays versus biotechs, as well as their top picks for today's market.  Note: This episode was recorded Wednesday 9 August 2023. What do we all want? To live long, healthy, and prosperous lives. Increasingly we're able to fulfill the first two elements of that triumvirate given the advances in modern medicine and healthcare services. What's more, is that we have an ageing population in many parts of the world that not only have the desire for longer and healthier lives, but also the capacity to pay for them. And that is all good news for the healthcare sector, which enjoys the benefits of said tailwinds from increases in spending on healthcare as a share of GDP. But not every company can be a healthcare giant like CSL, Cochlear, or ResMed. At least not yet. In this episode of Buy Hold Sell, we're running the ruler over healthcare names that, whilst not as big as those mentioned above, sure are mighty. As the world moves towards an electric vehicle future, a great deal of attention has been given to the effects of mining and environmental impact of producing batteries. One major area of attention is what happens to these batteries at the end of life, and how to keep them from being thrown into the trash. But what does recycling mean, and is it actually as environmentally friendly as we'd all like it to be?Tim Johnston, the Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Li-Cycle, joins the Minerals Manhattan Project to walk us through what it means to recycle a battery. We talk about traditional and newer battery recycling processes and compare their waste streams, carbon emissions, and products they produce.Tim explains how a battery comes apart into plastic, metals, and "black matter" - the active material in the battery - and what different recycling streams can be used to product new products.Emily drills Tim on the economics of each step of the recycling process, from the plastics to the metals through the black mass active material for manufacturing new batteries. Tim describes the hydro-metallurgical process used by Li-Cycle to recover lithium, nickel, cobalt, and graphite ready to re-enter battery and other industrial processes.
