Welcome back, Jo! Teacher, educational advocate, and one of Dean's favorite people, Joanna Johnson, returns to talk about YOUR kids. - Parents who give their kids away - Parents who tell their kids to keep secrets - Parents to force their kids to take a vow of familial silence - What kids want today that parents aren't giving them - Present-day examples of worst-case scenarios (Puff Daddy/Justin Bieber) - What is the ONE thing Jo says your kids want from you other than unconditional love Jo has a knack for educating through historical examples. Your kids are no property. They have rights and are looking for security, not chaos. We've progressed as a society, and for some reason, some people want to parent like it's 1850. The keys to a successful relationship with your kids are in this podcast. Careful

Twitter is good for something. Joanna Johnson appeared on my radar this year. When the rest of social media was name-calling (Dean raises hand), doxxing, and calling each other pedos and groomers, Joanna, a teacher with 20 years under her belt, decided to educate. She's become a viral sensation by offering facts on everything from the curriculum your kids actually learn, to what the Save Our Children movement REALLY wants to how to the gaslighting of Israel/Gaza keyboard warriors. Joanna gives 3-minute masterclasses on fats instead of fiction, and she's cool AF about it all.  Her podcast is incredible. Her common sense is undeniable, and your education is her privilege.  We talked: - Teaching in the smartphone age and how to protect your kids (you can't) - What are child rights versus parental rights?  - Kids selling out their parents - Religion's role in academics Part two of our podcast was on Joana's Unlearn16: Shool's in session: Listen here.

This week's guest is author Jo Lloyd Johnson. Jo grew up in a “non-denominational charismatic commune”. She spent her adolescence in various churches, but they weren't as “Spirit-filled” as she was taught they could be.She married young and the first years of marriage were difficult. There was alcohol abuse, church shopping, and the difficulties that come with having young children. She and her husband needed the church to be a place of deep and meaningful relationships, but it wasn't.“When we started seeing church as a social club [with no depth], we were like, ‘No. This is not what we thought it was…'”By 2018, Jo realized the Church was steeped in Patriarchy. She had been fine with “a woman's place” until she wasn't.Now Jo has used writing as a way to process the trauma and emotions she's experienced and her book, Silenced in Eden, is helping others along their own journeys.LinksInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/jolloydjohnson/Silenced In Edenhttps://amzn.to/3nBRBYyInteractFor quotes, recommendations, transcripts and more see the full episode show noteshttps://gracefulatheist.com/2023/05/07/joanna-johnson-silenced-in-eden/Join the Deconversion Anonymous Facebook grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/deconversionSupport the podcast on Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/gracefulatheistSecular Gracehttps://gracefulatheist.com/2016/10/21/secular-grace/Deconversionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/Deconstructionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/#deconstruction/Attribution"Waves" track written and produced by Makaih Beatshttps://makaihbeats.net/

The Federal Trade Commission recently sent a report to Congress detailing some of the tactics that dealership service centers and OEMs use to divert maintenance work to their shops. We are NOLN are digging into the report for some reporting, but in the meantime, we've brought in an expert to talk about the main points.  Joanna Johnson, policy advisor for the Automotive Oil Change Association (AOCA), has been working for years on issues that this report covers. In this episode, she talks about some of the tactics that OEMs use to direct service and how this report shines a light on issues that need to be addressed. This is part one of a two-parter, so stay tuned next week for the follow-up!

Joanna Johnson is a high school teacher from Ontario, CA. She was encouraged by her students to go on TikTok and found it oddly freeing. She talks about gender roles and gender identity and when I told her that I wanted help talking about these issues on my podcast she graciously accepted. In this episode Joanna told me about her coming out story, how she deals with the “are you a male or female” question and how we as parents can talk to our kids to help them (and us) better understand their sexual identity. Emily (knittingbutterfly), Joanna Johnson and I went out to San Jose and were very kindly hosted by our friends the Knitmores- Jasmin and Gigi of the Knitmore Girls podcast. Thursday afternoon before the event actually opened that we had lunch with Sivia. When we dropped her back at her hotel we went up to her room and she showed us the kits for these beautiful necklaces and samples that were already made/in progress. Knew it was something my mom would love! She had a handful of colors to choose from and we got to pick what we wanted off her bed and buy them! When we got back to the car we all agreed that the exhilaration was intoxicating and decided this was the knitting version of a drug deal. We got such a kick out of it.  Kit had everything I needed- yarn, beads, the flosser to string the beads, clasp. Love the way this came out. Think I’d have liked it with the 2.0 mm called for and perhaps with bigger beads a little better but I didn’t have that on hand. Pattern is well written and intuitive. It was easy to memorize the 8 row repeat and to read my knitting once the repeat was established. Something new to me. Never knit with beads before. K1, place one. very easy.  Pattern available as a kit from Earthfaire (US $29.95). Kit includes pattern, silk thread, bead mix, and clasp. Basically, your project should tie in with a play or musical (on Broadway, or a little further from the Great White Way, the decision is yours). How you tie in your project with the theme is up to you, make it work! Have fun! Is the yarn or pattern actually named after a Broadway show or character or even a song from a show? Does the project remind you of a costume from a show? Is the yarn bright green, so it reminds you of Elphaba’s skin in Wicked? You get the point! Here is a great website where you can see Broadway shows listed by the year that they opened. You never know what might inspire you! There is a featured bundle in this group where any group member is free to add patterns you find that might work. This thread is for discussion and planning. Feel free to chat, encourage, make suggestions, etc. Closer to the cast-on date, a thread will be opened for finished objects. We will keep this KAL to one post per person in the FO thread, that way everyone is kind of on even ground. You may complete as many projects as you like, but you will put all of your FOs in one post in that thread. Prizes!   1 pattern from Jennifer Lassonde   1 Skein of yarn from The Happy Buffalo Boutique   2 Skeins of yarn from Ancient Threads Farm   Thanks to Thuy from the Twisted Stitches Podcast for the donation of an Original Cast Recording of Hamilton. Listen up to find out about the prompt for this giveaway and thanks to Thuy for the prize.    There is a chatter thread open on the Actually Knitting Podcast group on Ravelry, as well as a Finished Objects thread.
